CELEBRATING THE FOURTH, BADER SCOTT STYLE

WHY INDEPENDENCE DAY IS A LANDMARK OCCASION FOR OUR FIRM

H appy Fourth of July! Though this spring has been unusual to say the least, I’m looking forward to the world starting to get back to normal this summer and what Fourth of July might bring. As I’m writing this, the holiday is still a few weeks away. I’m not entirely sure what our plans will be, but I’ll probably spend the day with my boys having something delicious to eat and catching a fireworks display. When I was growing up we didn’t have much in the way of Fourth of July traditions, but funnily enough, I ended up creating one as an adult. Two years ago, Seth called me on July 3 and asked, “What are you doing tomorrow?” My sons weren’t going to be with me that year for the holiday, so I didn’t have anything planned. I told him that, and he said, “Why don’t you come over and talk about business?” This was before Bader Scott was Bader Scott, back when Seth and I were just friends with separate firms — his was Bader Law Firm, mine was The Scott Law Firm. Seth told me to come over for an hour, so I showed up at his house at 8 a.m. on the Fourth of July ready to talk. Well, one hour turned into two, which turned into five, which turned into 12! It was 8 p.m. when I finally headed home.

By the end of that day, the two of us had hashed out the entire business plan for Bader Scott Injury Lawyers, the rechristened law firm that would bring our clients together. Seth had filled me in on

all things Bader Law Firm — I knew the key players, the marketing, and our shared goals — and we’d created an ambitious plan. Then, we went to work. Two years later, our firm has more than doubled in size. Watching it grow from 25 to 150 employees has been a crazy ride, but I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come since that marathon planning session on Independence Day. Last year, after spending the Fourth with our families, we celebrated the anniversary of that meeting a bit late, on July 11. That weekend, Seth and I went to dinner together at The Capital Grille and officially signed our partnership documents to commemorate the merger. After a year of red tape and negotiation, we were officially one firm! A month later, we announced the big news at the State of the Firm address, and we haven’t looked back since. Fourth of July was already a special day, but because it’s the anniversary of my partnership with Seth, it has become even more meaningful for me. I’m looking forward to many more years of raising a glass to the occasion as we watch Bader Scott Injury Lawyers grow! The more people we can help, the happier I’ll be.

Happy Fourth of July, everyone! Stay safe out there and enjoy Independence Day responsibly.

WITH A FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT ROOM MAKE YOUR GAME NIGHTS EXTRA SPECIAL

SOUNDPROOF YOUR SPACE. Trying to impress your guests with great sound doesn’t mean that your entire neighborhood has to hear what you’re watching! Soundproofing not only helps shield your neighbors from action game explosions and booming movie

Families around the world are finding new ways to spend time with each other, and their homes are changing accordingly. Whether your family members are video gamers, movie enthusiasts, or board game fans, everyone can benefit from having a dedicated entertainment room. Here are some tips for putting one together. USE YOUR SPACE WISELY. Consider the advantages and challenges of your available space. You don’t want small spaces to feel cramped, and you don’t want large spaces to feel empty. If your room is small, then design the space to serve multiple purposes, like installing a bar with a TV on the opposite wall. If your room is large, then why not have two or more TVs to let visitors play multiple games or watch different shows? A projector can also be used to maximize a room’s space. It allows you and your guests to utilize an entire wall without requiring much physical space. SET UP SURROUND SOUND. Whether you’re using your entertainment room for movies, music, video games, or all of the above, investing in high-quality speakers will pay off instantly. You can set them up around the room for clearer, more immersive sound for movies and games, and by spacing out each speaker, you can eliminate cord clutter and tangle.

scores, but it also improves the sound quality in the room. Thick curtains and carpets, wall-mounted foam panels, or freestanding acoustic panels work for basic soundproofing, but if you plan to utilize your space every day and night, then consider hiring a contractor to help estimate materials and cost for a more sophisticated soundproof space. HAVE GREAT LIGHTING. There’s nothing more inviting than a well-lit space, and this also applies to your entertainment room. Whether you’re playing a board game or putting together puzzles with the whole family, mood lighting can make the experience feel even more cozy and special. Try experimenting with different, stylish lamps or overhead fixtures to light up your space.

MEET DAVID LOPEZ THE MAN WHO HUSTLED HIS WAY UP

If we had to use just four words to describe HR Director David Lopez, we’d pick these: energetic, passionate, consistent, and tenacious. For the past six years, David has been an indispensable part of the Bader Scott family, and for two years before that, he did an amazing job as Seth’s personal assistant, paving the way for his career to come. When David moved from Miami to Atlanta to be closer to his boyfriend, his background was in retail human resources. In 2012, he was working as an assistant to a local personal trainer when he met Seth at the gym. The two hit it off, and pretty soon David was hired. Before long, though, he knew he wanted to help Seth out in an even bigger way — by joining Bader Scott. “Seth was used to me as his personal assistant, but I wanted to be part of the firm,” David remembers. “We went into the office on and off, and it was just getting busier and busier. I said, ‘You know what, I think you need me here!’ Basically what I did was I sat down at his extra computer and said, ‘I’m staying!’”

The memory still makes David laugh. His tenacity impressed Seth, and he worked his way up quickly once he had his foot in the door. Over the next few years, David helped out in every single department, including intake, reception, marketing, and customer service. Eventually he landed the post of HR Director. Though David is impressive in his own right — he’s won multiple firm awards including 2018 Employee of the Year and the 2019 Leadership Award — he credits Seth for his professional growth. “Seth Bader helped me grow and taught me everything. I have become the man I am thanks to him,” David says. “Bader Scott offered me opportunities and the ease of learning everything from a kind and humble person who wants the best for others. He believed in me, and that’s why I admire him. He gave me all the tools to grow.” David, we’re so glad you sat down at that computer all of those years ago and refused to get up! We can’t imagine Bader Scott without you.

INJURED ON THE JOB? CHOOSE A DOCTOR YOU TRUST

If you’re injured at work, you might be tempted to head straight to your usual primary care physician for treatment. However, in these cases, going to your family doctor isn’t always an option. That’s because for workplace injuries, Georgia law requires you to choose a doctor from a panel of physicians selected by your employer. Your employer has to maintain a list of at least six physicians or medical practices that you can choose from. At least one must be an orthopedist, and only one or two can be industrial clinics. CHOOSING A DOCTOR At first, your boss will choose a physician from the panel for you. You can accept their choice, or if you’re not comfortable with that physician, you can pick a different one from the panel. You’re allowed to switch doctors midway through treatment if an issue arises. That said, until you make the swap, you need to keep all of your appointments and follow your assigned doctor’s advice. The point of workers’ compensation is to get you healed up and back to work, and this can’t happen unless you cooperate with examination and treatment. If you don’t keep appointments or follow medical advice —

regardless of the reason — your benefits could be suspended and you could be prohibited from changing doctors.

THE DOCTOR’S RESPONSIBILITIES The doctor you end up with at the end of the selection process will be your primary care physician. If they can’t handle your injury alone, they’re responsible for referring you to a specialist as necessary to make sure you get the best possible care. As you go through the treatment process, remember that your doctor’s job is not just to help you heal. Because they were chosen for the panel of physicians by your employer, they’re also supposed to determine the type and extent of your disability. If your doctor doesn’t believe you’re injured to the extent you believe you are, then your claim for workers’ compensation could be denied. If you’re having trouble choosing a doctor or having problems with the doctor you’ve ended up with, contact our team of workers’ compensation attorneys today. We have the experience to get the job done and can help you receive the fair treatment you need!

3 Travel Destinations Where Photos Are a No-Go

3 TRAVEL HOT SPOTS WHERE PHOTOGRAPHY IS FORBIDDEN NO PHOTOS ALLOWED

THE SISTINE CHAPEL While the Sistine Chapel may be home to incredible works of art originally painted by Michelangelo, it is also a place of worship, and the Vatican considers it disrespectful to photograph such a holy place. However, there’s more to the story. In 1980, Japan’s Nippon Television Network Corporation bought exclusive rights to all photos and videos of the interior of the chapel because they funded the renovation of the chapel. While the Japanese corporation no longer holds these rights, the Vatican maintains the “no photos” rule. ULURU Also known as Ayers Rock, Uluru is one of the largest sandstone rock formations in the world. Located in the middle of Australia, Uluru is highly regarded by the Anangu Aboriginal people who call the region home. Photography around parts of the rock is forbidden out of respect for the Anangu people’s beliefs, specifically Tjukurpa , or the time when the world was created. Certain areas around Uluru are used for gender-specific rituals, and as a result, members of the opposite sex must never see these locales, including in photos. The Anangu say the restriction of photography ensures they adhere to their beliefs and never lay eyes on these sacred spots, even accidentally through a photograph.

What is traveling without taking photos? With the excellent cameras on our smartphones and endless platforms to share our snapshots on, we’re taking more pictures than ever. But did you know there are certain destinations where visitors are not allowed to take photos? Here are three places where you must put the camera away. THE EIFFEL TOWER Right now, you’re probably thinking about all the pictures of the Eiffel Tower you’ve seen or even taken yourself. After all, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most popular tourist spots in the world, but under French law, taking a photo of the Eiffel Tower at night — and then distributing that photo — is illegal. That includes posting the picture to social media. French officials can send you a cease-and-desist order if they find your night photo because the tower’s nighttime light display is copyrighted. It was installed by French artist Pierre Bideau who owns the rights to the display. Do French officials search the web for your vacation photos? No, but they can take action if it’s brought to their attention.
