What’s new with BBI?

Our COO, Marc Roberts, ran a training pilot to key members of the UK Construction Productivity Taskforce early March. Feedback was positive and led to our CEO, Mark Worrall presenting to the Taskforce board We are working towards a future roll-out of our productivity training programmes to over 600 people. We’re excited to be involved with the taskforce and driving productivity in the sector.

Mark recently joined the ICE; Institute of Civil Engineers Productivity board and we are excited to be part of such an important body in the built environment. The drive for productivity supports the Institutes President, Ed MCCann’s key drivers during his presidency.

This week we have a full house of attendees for our 2nd Construction to Production Masterclass at the world class Toyota Engine plant. We have 14 attendees from various clients, global organisations and tier 1 construction companies, and we are also looking forward to welcoming Anglian Water to the day.

With our new services and brand firmly in place, you may see our name popping up more often in emails and social media as people are talking to us.

BBI Services celebrates Women in Construction week 2022

Business improvement specialists BBI Services are showing their support for their female employees during Women in Construction Week 2022.

Research reveals that only 14% of construction industry professionals are women 1 , but the BBI team proudly contains a number of fantastic female staff who have vital roles within the organisation, including business improvement, finance, office management and marketing.

One member in particular, has over 10 years’ experience working in the construction sector on civil, residential and industrial projects - helping to maximise productivity, improve processes, and roll out business-wide improvements. Jessie Stroud has worked at BBI Services for three and a half years as a Business Improvement Specialist. “My role within construction is incredibly varied,” comments Jessie. “There’s a real sense of satisfaction having contributed to a tangible end-product that you might not get from other industries - especially when you can walk through a new residential courtyard, university campus, or along a river which benefits from a project you supported. “

Why organisational development is vital to improving any business Over the last two years, the industry has been put under unprecedented strain, and it looks like there’s no sign of this easing. As companies start to overcome the repercussions of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are now faced with a raft of other issues, not least tackling the government’s net zero targets and dealing with continuing supply chain disruption.

Organisational development is key to aligning a company’s strategy, goals and core purpose to ensure everyone is singing off the same hymn sheet - and then enhancing the way they operate.

At BBI Services, we have worked with a number of key players over the years in the built environment to harness the power of people, processes and performance, and align their organisations while making their operations as efficient as possible. Please see the full article on our website for more info on how we help OD with:  Clearly communicating your strategy and engaging everyone  Putting performance in the spotlight  The role of leadership

Meet the Team Garry Masters – Business Improvement Specialist

This month we put Garry in the hot seat and quizzed him over his time with BBI and in the Construction Sector. Garry has been with BBI for nearly 4 years and is currently heading up training with a new joint venture client. Garry is an accomplished operations & supply chain professional with 14 years senior leadership in manufacturing, supply chain and construction.

What are best things about working in construction? Opportunities to reduce frustrations, tackle problems in a structured way, work together collaboratively, and reduce the wasted time on waiting, transportation, materials etc. Empowering teams to make decisions and changes for the better. What are the biggest impacts of the training & consultancy you deliver? Bringing individuals together to collaborate and solve problems together. Improving people’s work lives and reducing frustrations. When you see a problem being solved with everyone on the same page the impact is huge. What do you enjoy the most about delivering training? Working with different people from various roles within a company, with different thoughts and opinions. Seeing teams produce ideas and solutions to improve their own situation and processes.

Why is training important within construction? The industry is great at offering opportunities to their teams regarding training, but the skills to train in Lean are not readily available. The lean methodologies have shown huge impact across other sectors, but construction thought “What we do is different every time, so we can’t do lean”. These thoughts have changed for many over time. The finished article is different, but most of the tasks and processes are very similar. Our training is key to be able to build a wide team of problem solvers and change the culture. Who is Garry outside of work? Family time is key! We like to be outdoors, in the New Forest or walking down the beach. Several weekends and weeks away in our touring caravan are scheduled for this year. I enjoy following and watching Formula 1 and am looking forward to the huge changes for this season.

Modular is the future – here are some key principles to make it work for you

So far, the pace of change has been fairly gradual. It means that, unless you’re intimately involved, some of that is likely to have passed you by. But in the decade ahead, there’s no way the ongoing modular revolution will go unnoticed. The speed and the extent of that change will dramatically increase – with, for example, some housebuilders predicting that as much as 90% of all construction will be offsite in just five years. Are you ready for that? Do you know how your organisation will respond? If not, please see the full article on our website, as we tell you more about the shape of construction to come – and how we can help you adapt to it and thrive. Offsite construction – or as we prefer to call it at BBI, onsite, near-site and off-site – has been quietly revolutionising the way the world’s construction projects operate for years now.

News from our social media

TOP GEAR One of Mark Worrall’s hobbies is vintage cars, and he often volunteers as a Marshall at Vintage Sports-car club events. On Saturday he was stood on the side-lines, doing his Marshall duties when some familiar faces passed by…… Freddie Flintoff, Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris! ‘BBI gets you into Top Gear’ – See what we’ve done there 😊😊

STEP INTO SUMMER In this post Covid world we understand more now than ever, that sharing is caring, so we wanted to showcase Glapwell Nurseries, near Chesterfield. Owned by the extended family of our Training & Development Director, Brett Blake. Brett’s wife, her brother, sister, mum & dad, have recently refurbished the nurseries & tearoom. If you’re local to Chesterfield, please pop in and see them.

CHARITY – TOOLS WITH A MISSON In his personal time, our Business Improvement Specialist Simon Danks, is the chair of the board of trustees for Tools With A Mission. This is an amazing charity that gives unwanted tools a new life! They refurbish them and send them out to Africa, allowing people to run their own micro businesses and help families move out of poverty. Our CEO, Mark Worrall recently donated this sewing machine which will be off to a new life through this great cause. Find out more about their work here: https://bit.ly/36RmvmW
