Volunteer of the Month Sponsored By Royal Oak Senior Living

Sheila Henderson For lifelong resident Sheila Henderson, volunteering is more of a calling than a pastime. Before Sheila became a full time volunteer upon retirement, she spent many wonderful years working for Van Pelts assembling office furniture, and working with her husband at the liquidation centre. Sheila says that her drive to be active in her community is based on two things; first, “I can’t stay still. I love to move,” and second, “I love to bless God. It’s God in everything, because if I can’t give glory, honor and praise to God, then my life is worthless. I do not live this life for myself. I am just desiring to help people in any way that I can, with time, money, consideration, driving them someplace, you know, things like that. If they have a need, I’ll be there.” As she has been a regular fixture there for years, Sheila was nominated as our volunteer of the month by Harvest Hands which is a local non-profit that is helping with food- security. “My friend Kathy said ‘Sheila, I’m over at Grace’ (previous location of Harvest Hands). She said to come on over if you haven’t got anything to do some day. So, I went over and I looked around and everybody was happy go lucky and pleasant and I could just feel like you’re at home -- the honesty and the laughter -- It is good place to be. So little by little, I went over there.” Sheila enjoyed the atmosphere so much she also recruited her good friend Peg, and now Sheila volunteers every day, Monday- Friday, and for any ‘all-hands-on-deck situations’. “It’s a place that you can do something that is worthwhile,” says Sheila. “I like to feed people. I know what it’s like to be hungry. I remember when you were able to buy 10 loaves of bread for $1. My mum did. Today, it’s two for $5. My heart goes out to the people who are out on the street and to whomever needs food. I just want to be part of that, to help. Because it’s the right thing to do. It really is.” Volunteering at Harvest Hands is only part of Sheila’s volunteer time. She has also volunteered at Mission Thrift

Store, as well as caring for a local 95-year-old gentleman twice a week. She has even taken folks into her own home as they did not want to be in a nursing home. Sheila credits her organizational skills to the fact that she raised 6 kids. I can see why Harvest Hands is so fond of Sheila, beyond the time she puts in; you can see how passionate she is about the cause and how she helps others find their way to helping out. “If you want to be blessed, follow me,” says Sheila. “I will take you there. I will stay with you and I will show you what we do. And if you’re interested after that, let’s do it together as a team because we’re all team players here. Nobody’s any more special than anybody else. I like it that way. Each task is just as important as that job and that’s the way I look at it. I encourage everybody to take part. It’s just a job that must be done and we all must do it. We will do it and we’ll do it with pride.” If you are interested in volunteering with Harvest Hands, they are located at 122 Edward St., St. Thomas and can be reached at [email protected].

Finding Your Motivation for Exercise by Jillian Maracle, Registered Kinesiologist VON SMART Program Supervisor We’ve all heard about the benefits of exercise; however, finding motivation to do it can be challenging. It can be particularly difficult when beginning an exercise regime for the first time after a long break, or when recovering from illness/injury. There are always many reasons not to exercise which all stem from lack of motivation. Let’s set these worries, doubts and excuses aside and get to the core of what makes exercise great. When we think of the benefits of exercise, we often think of extrinsic motivators such as looking more toned, achieving weight loss and receiving compliments on how we look. Over time, these motivations aren’t sustainable and our exercise regime falls to the wayside. It is important to find meaningful motivation to keep us on track. When we create goals that directly impact important parts of our lives, we are more likely to stick to them. Cardiovascular fitness is the capacity of our circulatory system (heart) and respiratory system (lungs) to supply oxygen to our muscles. It concerns our stamina and ability to perform activity for extended periods of time. From a functional standpoint, improving cardiovascular fitness could entail going to the park with your grandchildren, doing laundry, gardening or going for a bike ride. Improving your stamina can help in many aspects of life. Strength is the amount of force our muscles can produce. Increasing strength can help with daily tasks such as Contact Us Discover The World’s Best Walk-In Tub Fully Installed Fully Installed ll I ll Fully Installed Fully Installed Have you been thinking of a walk-in tub?

carrying groceries, opening jars, using stairs, and holding your grandchildren. By increasing strength you can, have more energy to do the things you enjoy. Balance is the ability to stay upright and remain in control of our body movement. Having good balance can improve your confidence going out into the community and doing tasks around the house. It can decrease your risk of falls, and keep you independent in your home for longer. Flexibility is our ability to move our joints through their full range of motion. Working on mobility helps your body move efficiently, reduces stiffness, and alleviate aches and pains. Improving flexibility helps with tasks such as getting dressed, tying your shoes and reaching into your cupboards. These aspects of health play an important role inmaintaining good quality of life as we age. Whether your motivation is playing with your grandchildren, being around longer for your family, or just maintaining your fitness to do the hobbies you enjoy, I challenge you to find your exercise WHY. VON’s SMART Exercise Program provides the opportunity for you to work towards your fitness goals in a fun, encouraging environment. The exercise classes, free to attend, are offered to individuals 55+ or adults living with disability. If this is something that interests you, please contact us at 519-659-2273 ext. 22267.

A Taste of Italy by Sue McKittrick, Elgin Travel & Cruises

As I write this article, I am into the second week of my new position at Elgin Travel & Cruises. I have met lots of people and learned lots about the travel industry. I have also learned that people are really anxious to travel again – to many different places around the world, including Europe. Today’s focus is on Italy. I have had a little taste of Italy, loved it, and will be returning to see more! My visit to Italy was in the fall of 2019 during a western Mediterranean cruise with my husband. The cruise took us to several cities in Spain, France and Italy, and we went on as many excursions as we could handle because we wanted to see and do everything. Besides Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca in Spain, and Marseilles in France, we saw several cities in Italy, including Florence, Pisa, Rome, Sorrento, Capri, Pompeii and Vatican City - which is actually an independent city-state. There was not a bad stop on the cruise and each city had interesting features that we were thrilled to check out. This was a great way to gather some information for a return trip to Italy that we know we want to take. We can now focus on spending a bit more time at some of our favourite spots, as well as finding some other cities we haven’t yet seen. Florence is definitely on our list because there is so much history and art to admire there it couldn’t be done in the afternoon we got to spend there. There may also be

a wine tour or two that we need to take in the beautiful Tuscany region. Pisa was very cool to see – and you need to go at least once so you can get ‘the’ photo – where it looks like you are pushing the tower over! Rome is loaded with attractions like the Coliseum, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and lots more, so it’s definitely a repeat city. Sorrento and Capri were both absolutely beautiful, and we need to revisit either those cities, or other cities along the Amalfi Coast. The guided tour of the ruins of Pompeii is an absolute must – and so is Vatican City (just make sure you take your hat off and have your knees and upper arms covered!). When we return to Italy, we also need to include a day or two in Venice, so we can see the sights from the water in a gondola!

We will help arrange an exciting and memorable vacation! The cruise itself was a whole other story – another great type of vacation travel with SO much to see and do. More on that another time. As of this writing, travel is allowed to Italy from Canada. No proof of negative COVID-19 test results are required for fully vaccinated travellers. As always, the rules and restrictions are subject to change, so the best bet is to check and re-check before travelling. And then go and have an adventure!

Leaving Your Legacy Is Making Your Mark on the World I think a universal truth is that we all want to be remembered in this world. Many of us feel our legacy will be remembered through our children and family, so we focus our energies on them. Many of us will be remembered by the impact we have made on our community, through our work, or our volunteer efforts. But when it is our turn to leave this world, we each have one last opportunity to make a lasting impact, an opportunity to continue to influence areas of this world that we deem important and that is through legacy giving. What is legacy giving? A legacy gift is a gift you give to a charity as part of your will. Your gift could be assets, property, cash, or even a percentage of your estate. To many charities and non-profits, legacy giving is a vital means of support that allows them to continue. Of course, these gifts not only can have a huge impact for the charity or charities you choose to support, but they can also have huge tax benefits for your estate. For those who are worried that if they leave a gift in their final will, their family will receive less, the Canadian government has offered substantial tax benefits. Basically, the full amount you gift is given back to your estate as a tax credit, which can maximize the value of your estate, with more going to your beneficiaries and less going to the government!

Legacy giving is not just for the elite wealth in our community; everyone can choose to make a difference in their own way. Of course, what you choose to gift will vary upon your individual and family situations. But let’s face it, today’s Boomer generation has far more wealth than their parents did, and while you want to make sure that future generations of your family benefit from your estate, it is also your opportunity to help the charities and causes that you hold dear one last time. We all wish we could have given more time and more money to our favourite charities in life. When we are gone it is too late to offer more time, but it is the perfect opportunity to assist them through a legacy gift. Note: We encourage everyone to evaluate if legacy gifting is right for you. This article offers some broad ideas of the benefits of legacy gifting, for the finer points, we encourage you to seek professionals trained in this area such as accountants, estate lawyers or your financial planners. Ontario’s PCs have a plan to get it done — re-building our economy post-pandemic; supporting our workers with good- paying jobs; investing in infrastructure, agri-food, education, and healthcare. We are committed to working for the people by keeping our costs down and taxes lower. We have a plan to stay open which includes strengthening our health and long- term care within our riding, and across the province. Ontario has been good to the Flack family. As such, I believe in giving back to our community. I am ready to work hard and put my leadership skills and experience to use in serving the people of EML. On June 2nd, I am asking to earn your confidence and your vote to become your next Member of Provincial Parliament.

I am Rob Flack, your PC candidate for Elgin—Middlesex—London for the upcoming provincial election. After graduating from the University of Guelph in 1979, I began my career with Masterfeeds Inc. In 1993, I was appointed CEO of the company and have led this national agri-business through years of growth. We have

numerous employees and retirees living in EML. Many riding farmers and feed dealers are long-time customers and suppliers to Masterfeeds. During this time my team and I founded The Charity Classic, which raises needed funds for Camp Trillium and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Southwestern Ontario. For 27 years, funds from this annual event have supported many families throughout EML. I am currently the Vice President of the Canadian Hereford Association and my family owns and operates a cow-calf operation, Dorbay Polled Herefords. In 2012, I was elected as a director of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair and served as its Chair and President in 2018 and 2019. Additionally, I served as a director of the London International Airport from2008 to 2020 and Chair from2017 to 2019. I am the past Chair of the St. Peter’s Seminary Foundation and co- founder of the Diocese of London Bishop’s Dinner. On June 2, we can choose a hopeful future for our children and grandchildren. We can choose to undo the damage done by COVID. We can choose to act on climate change. We can choose Universal Mental Health Care for everyone, not just those who can afford it. We can choose a government that cares for us. There is much work to do – together. You can reach me at andykroeker.ontariondp.ca or andy. [email protected]

Our Green Vision is focused on three things: • Jobs (Purpose) – A sustainable, renewable, and equitable economy. • People – Inclusive and supportive healthcare, affordable housing, and social equality. • Planet – An urgent response for a better world. It is our businesses and industries that give us purpose and the power to drive our local economy. When our economy thrives, our community thrives. With a thriving community, we have capacity to build a better tomorrow—a more equitable society for everyone. We must facilitate a space for democracy to function, not just for well-connected insiders, but for all citizens. Our province needs responsible leaders who listen to the needs of the people and respond with practical steps forward, with a long-term vision. We need passionate voices who hold others accountable, to move away from parties that have failed to one that will usher in a new era. No more corporate influence lining executives’ pockets; we need genuine, people-powered change. As an engaged citizen and local business partner, it is my hope and intention to see Ontarians embrace this potential. We must right the path of the run-away train, overcoming social barriers to improve the health of each other and our planet. Together, we can create a brighter world for our children. Together, we can experience a new and better reality we all deserve. An inclusive, prosperous, and accessible province is possible, and we cannot put it off any longer. I hope you’ll join me in choosing a better way. Vote Green. Candidates are in alphabetical order. The election is June 2, 2022.

Amanda Stark, Green Party of Ontario

With the existential crisis facing us today — political division, economic struggles, and the climate emergency on our doorstep — it can seem as if options for quality leadership are limited. No wonder so many people have become cynical about business-

as-usual politics. I believe the Green Party offers a better way. Set aside the expectation of double-speak, contradictions, and conflicts of interest. Our leader, Mike Schreiner, is well-respected in his work and advocacy. The Green Party plan is thoroughly researched and plainly documented. Our candidates communicate this vision with heart. And our life-affirming policies and community- oriented approach are precisely what our province needs right now: positive change for our people and the planet.

A Proposed Newcomers Guide to St. Thomas by Terry Carroll Mayor Joe Preston says that, with a little help from our friends in neighbouring municipalities, St. Tho- mas has become home to about 1,000 new people each year for the last five years. By 2032, there could be 55,000 people in the Railway City.

enjoy the folksy confusion. Historical note: there once was a BMO West End situated not that far from Clinic 217 which offers ‘substance use disorder treatments.’ However, Clinic 217 is now located, not at 217 Talbot Street, but at 475 Talbot Street. Just relax and go with it. We seem to have lots of churches for newcomers, but the old-line denominations are shrinking, or becoming mosques or temples. Who said we’re not culturally diverse? If you’re on a walking trail, smile, nod and say hello to everyone. If you don’t, you might as well have a stamp across your forehead reading, ‘Newbie From The GTA.’ Learning how to speak like a local is easy. When asked on the trail, ‘How are ya?’ you should say, ‘Not too bad, and you?’ And they will reply, ‘I’m awright.’ Next, you talk about the weather. Phrases like: ‘Cold enough for you? I can’t take the heat. Good weather for ducks.’ And so on. Never act like the weather is perfect. That attitude is for sissies like the people you left behind in the GTA. Don’t talk about money, as in your money, or my money. It’s expected that you will talk about government money, how they have far too much of it and don’t know how to spend it or save it wisely. Just don’t talk about things like the $2.5 million you got for your home in the GTA, or ask me how much money I have or make. It would take a lot for the good-hearted (at least that’s how we see ourselves) people of St. Thomas to drive you out of town. But talking about money could do it. Treat segues in street names as perfectly ordinary. Princess is also St. Catharine. Inkerman is CASO Crossing, is Third. Flora is Ross, etc. Oh yes; Elgin is Wilson, Queen is St. George. The list goes on. We delight in this ditziness -- can’t get enough of it. One other note on the street thing. If you’re trying to find East Street or East Ave., they’re both in the west end of St. Thomas. Of course, we could change that. A renaming to West Ave. and West Street would reflect a compromise in line with our emerging diversity. East is east and west is west inmost towns, but the Rudyard Kipling poem does not apply to St. Thomas. In the Newcomers Guide, the twain shall meet on West Ave. Mayor Joe? Establish Media? St. Thomas Happenings? Anybody home?

Forget any big-city nonsense about the vehicle on the right or whatever that is. St. Thomas is home to all the major Canadian banks plus Libro and some smaller credit unions. To imitate a true local, use the teller if at all possible, and visit while you’re there. Chat away. Talk it up. Especially if you’re a senior. A quick clarification: there’s only one BMO in town, and it’s called BMO East End. Because of city growth, it’s located in the West End or possibly Central, but take a pill and Mayor Joe’s main message to businesspeople is to get ready. Be prepared. Business opportunities wait in all these potential customers moving to town. No argument there, but let’s look at this another way. Are these newcomers prepared for us? Maybe not. Perhaps they could use a primer on the traditional ways of the Railway City; hence, some ideas toward ‘A Newcomers Guide to St. Thomas.’ At our burgeoning traffic circles, avoid the aggressive circling techniques you’ve picked up in the GTA or London. Here’s how to do it like a local: slow down, hesitate, then creep in, heart pounding all the way, muttering, ‘How the %&!# do I get out of this?’

BADDA BOOM! by Frances Kennedy

There are benefits to being Boomers -- by virtue of our sheer numbers (and the influence of Dr. Spock on our mothers) we have redefined at every stage what our age acts and looks like.

Recently, my eldest son asked me lovingly but pointedly, when I was going to act my age. I thought about that and wondered where his version of what`s appropriate for my age was born. Obviously not from me, not likely from either of his très chic grandmothers -- and he had the benefit of knowing his great grandmother who was a ‘heller’ in her day as a renowned Rosie the Riveter in World War 2. Grandmothers wear spectacles and aprons, bake cookies, and have all the time in the world for their grandchildren and on all counts, I stand accused, so what`s the difference? When I looked at photos of my grandmother at my age now, closing in on 70, I got it! My eureka was, I have a cause and purpose I call my next big thing. I`m not retired, I`m re-fired, and hit the floor (most days) with all that in mind. Living life well means we`re not done doing what we love to do until we`re dead. Without purpose we are in peril of acting our age! Dame Joan Collins is quoted as saying, ‘I don`t know why people are so obsessed with age anyway. I mean, 90 is the new 70; 70 is the new 50, and 50 is the new 40, so what`s the whole act-your-age thing?’ So says a woman who in 2021celebrated her 70th year in the entertainment industry! We don`t need to be Hollywood movie stars to feel the importance of having purpose but we do need purpose to feel important and worthy of being alive right here, right now. What about creating a vision board of your next chapter of your best life? My experience in facilitating such projects has taught me three things: 1) A visual picture of the elements of an ideal future helps to create it when you see it every day, several times day. Take a photo of it and make it your screen saver. 2) The cut-and-paste process can take time when you reflect on what`s important to you now. Take the time because it makes for a meaningful life. 3) Consider not just what makes you happy but also what makes you relevant – ultimately, that makes life meaningful and that makes for happy. (I would be remiss if I didn`t say writing this column makes meaning for me.) Finally, this…. Spring 2022 is upon us, and uncertainty about what`s next continues to prevail from moment to moment, be it the weather, our wellbeing, or a third World War. Now, as we navigate from pandemic to endemic and normalize the new normal, let`s remember that we are the elders, the mavens in a time of disruptive change. We`re not done yet; we must lead with calm and the clarity of purpose. As Albert Einstein once opined, ‘When we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change.’ Badda Bing!
