JULY 2021

Baton Rouge 225-444-4444 1075 Government St. Baton Rouge, LA 70802

Dudley DeBosier Made a Big Difference for Greg At the end of what should have been a normal workday,

Denham Springs 225-444-4444

419 S. Range Ave., Ste. A Denham Springs, LA 70726

His life was permanently altered. Greg was having a hard time doing his typical daily activities, whether that included going to work or traveling and doing fun things with his family. His physical limitations started to build up, eventually affecting him emotionally as well. Greg quickly realized he would have to learn to navigate his new normal and that he wouldn’t be able to get his “old life” back. The Dudley DeBosier team knew that he would have to continue treating his injuries for the rest of his life — and as you know, medical bills tend to add up quickly . After taking his case to mediation, Greg’s attorney, Amber Lorio, worked alongside Steve DeBosier to settle his case. After Greg’s life got flipped upside down, our goal was to give him the feeling of comfort, let him know that he wouldn’t have to stress about finances, and ensure he knew that we would take care of him. Going the extra mile to get clients the money they deserve — that’s the Dudley DeBosier Difference.

Greg was on his way home but got stuck in some pretty congested traffic — as any typical Louisianian experiences Monday through Friday. He remembers looking in his rearview mirror and seeing another car quickly approaching him. He could tell they were not going to stop. As fast as he could, Greg braced himself for the impact and the vehicle slammed into him, pushing him into the car in front of him. Not only was Greg’s truck severely damaged from the wreck, but he was also severely injured … Immediately after the crash, Greg began experiencing significant pain in his neck, back, shoulder, upper legs, and bottom. After numerous consultations, tests, and doctors’ visits, Greg underwent extensive medical treatment in hopes of treating his injuries. After many visits to his chiropractor and orthopedist and receiving a discogram, branch blocks, epidural steroid injections, and SI joint injections, Greg began to wonder if he would ever feel like he did before the crash.

EDUCATE YOURSELF ON HEAT-RELATED ILLNESSES Stay Cool This Summer When thinking about extreme and deadly weather, most people conjure up images of massive tornadoes in the Midwest or hurricanes and flooding in the Southeast. But you might be surprised to learn that the deadliest extreme weather event is excessive heat. In fact, according to a study from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), heat causes more deaths each year than floods, lightning, tornadoes, and hurricanes combined . Since 2020 was the second warmest year on record and all the other years in the top 10 have occurred since 2005, it’s time to wise up about heat-related illnesses. Heat-Related Illnesses and Risk Factors According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heat-related illnesses are caused by “exposure to extreme heat where the body becomes unable to properly cool, resulting in a rapid rise in body temperature.” There are several kinds of heat-related illnesses. The least severe are heat rashes, sunburn, and heat cramps, and the most serious are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. While anyone can experience these illnesses if they overexert themselves in hot weather, some groups are more at risk than others, including: • Children under the age of 4 and adults over the age of 65 • People with preexisting medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease • People who are overweight • People taking certain kinds of medication • Individuals who are intoxicated or drink excessively Symptoms to Watch Out For Both heat exhaustion and heat stroke have many of the same symptoms, including headaches, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, and passing out. But other symptoms help differentiate the two. Heat stroke victims will have hot, red skin that may be dry or damp, and they’ll likely have a fast, strong pulse. By contrast, victims of heat exhaustion will have cold, pale, and clammy skin and a fast but weak pulse.

5 Important Safety Guidelines for Warehouse Workers Over 95,000 people are injured every year from forklift accidents. Despite the Occupational Safety and Health Association’s (OSHA) laws on warehouse safety, not every workplace is careful about following them. Here are five crucial safety laws to keep in mind while operating or standing near any warehouse equipment! No. 1: Any exposed area that employees could walk off of or fall 4 feet or more from should be blocked off. This may seem like common sense, but a warehouse can obscure the difference in floor height wherever there are slopes, stairs, etc. Even if the hazard is obvious upon first glance, consider that it may cause accidents while someone is walking backward or operating a forklift with a tall load. Avoid these accidents by making sure the area is properly blocked off. No. 2: Ensure that your forklift always carries an even weight that’s below its weight limit. Your forklift might say that it can carry up to 3,500 pounds, but its real weight capacity is often much lower, especially if it’s carrying an irregular or uneven weight load. Your forklift can easily tip over — despite carrying less weight — if it’s carrying enough irregular packages, so it’s best to always operate it in optimal conditions and well below the maximum capacity. No. 3: Drive your forklift at 5 mph. Legally speaking, the speed limit for forklifts in warehouses is 8 mph, but try to aim for 5 mph as much as possible. Driving heavy loads indoors can lead to severe injuries on yourself and those around you. Take your time and drive carefully. No. 4: Remember that extensions reduce forklift capacity. If you’re using attachments on your forklift, remember that the carrying capacity doesn’t stay the same. Despite its extended grip, your forklift will actually have a reduced carrying capacity due to the extra-long weight it has to balance. If your forklift raises its driver or its load into the air, keep in mind that the higher it goes, the less carrying capacity the machinery will also have. No. 5: Keep floors clean and free of slip and trip hazards at all times. We don’t always think about the risks if we spill a spot of water or coffee on the floor, but it could be a severe life-changing injury for someone. Do your coworkers — and yourself — a solid and ensure the floors are always clear on your watch.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency requiring professional medical attention immediately. You should also seek medical help for anyone exhibiting the above symptoms who is also throwing up or whose symptoms are getting worse or last longer than one hour. For a complete list of symptoms and treatment for all heat-related illnesses, visit CDC.gov/disasters/ extremeheat/warning.html . Stay cool this summer and prevent heat-related illnesses by seeking shade or staying indoors on hot days, avoiding exerting yourself in the heat, and drinking plenty of water!

DEFENDING THE DEADLIEST JOB IN AMERICA

About 1 of 5 U.S. presidents pass away while on the job — this terrible ratio makes the presidency the deadliest job in America. But even with its dangers, protecting the president wasn’t what the Secret Service was created to do. It was created to uphold a financially crumbling nation after the Civil War. What if a third of your money were fake? The political arena in 1865 was delicate enough, but by the end of the Civil War, nearly one-third of all American currency in circulation was counterfeit, making the economy extremely unstable. On the same day as his assassination, President Lincoln signed the creation of the Secret Service into law as a bureau of the Treasury Department.

widespread counterfeiting and financial crimes such as bank and financial institution fraud, mail fraud, wire fraud, illicit financing operations, and major conspiracies. What about protecting the president? Things began to change after President McKinley was assassinated in 1901. The Secret Service became tasked with the full-time protection of the President of the United States, and this duty expanded and evolved over time, in no small thanks to statutory changes, Presidential Decision Directives, Homeland Security Presidential Directives, National Security Presidential Directives, and various other executive orders.

the United States Secret Service Uniformed Division also protects the White House and Naval Observatory. Since 1970, the Secret Service has also been responsible for protecting foreign embassies and consulates in or around the Washington, D.C. area. However, it’s only as recently as 1998 that the Secret Service has begun protecting National Special Security Events (NSSEs), including major political party conventions, presidential inaugurations, summits of world leaders, state funerals, and even the Super Bowl. Knowingly or not, our nation is much stronger — financially and politically — thanks to the Secret Service.

In a duty that the Secret Service still fulfills today, the bureau was intended to fight against

Fourth of July Fun Facts to Share With the Kids

4

The Fourth of July marks our country’s independence because it’s when the Continental Congress ratified the Declaration of Independence. This fact might seem like a no-brainer, but it contextualizes the holiday for kids. It’s a great jumping-off point to talk about why the United States wanted to be its own country, what the Continental Congress was, what the Declaration of Independence said, and what it means to “ratify” something. Two future presidents signed the Declaration of Independence: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. They both died exactly 50 years later, on July 4, 1826. This fact is an interesting coincidence sure to fascinate both kids and adults. It’s also a great way to introduce kids to some of the Founding Fathers and share how they helped shape the United States today. In 1776, the year the United States was founded, only 2.5 million people lived here. Today, the U.S. population is 331 million. Lots of people have been born in the United States since it was founded, and millions more came here from other places, hoping to find a better life. Many succeeded, too. Many people want to call this country home! On the Fourth of July, around 155 million hot dogs are eaten in the United States. Okay, so this fact might not have anything to do with American history, but it’s still pretty funny! If anything, the fact that we have so many hot dogs to eat on that day is evidence of the prosperity so many people enjoy in the United States of America.

What do your kids know about the Fourth of July? Do they know it’s a day when you have a barbecue, spend time with friends and neighbors, and watch a fireworks show? These hallmarks of the holiday certainly do make it fun and memorable, but they don’t really exemplify why we celebrate the Fourth of July, the anniversary of when the United States declared its independence from Britain. So, along with the sparklers and hot dogs, here are a few fun facts about Independence Day you can share with your kids to help them understand the significance of the holiday.
