THE BIG FAT ICING MISTAKE I REALLY LEARNED MY LESSON!

FINDING GRATITUDE IN UNEXPECTED PLA

When I was a little girl, my family didn’t approve of eating snacks or treats between meals. Mom cooked, we ate together, and that was that. But I constantly hunted for something sweet. One afternoon, I wandered into the kitchen where Mom had been cooking and baking all morning, and I spied a bowl full of white stuff on the counter. Icing! I don’t know about every other kid, but man, I loved icing when I was little. At birthday parties, I always asked for the corner piece of cake covered in big sugar flowers. In fact, when I turned 4 years old, I asked my mom for a big bowl of buttercream icing instead of a cake! That bowl on the counter was screaming my name.

Oh my gosh — it was HORRIBLE!

I’d never experienced such a terrible taste. My mouth felt slick and tacky, and no matter how much water I swished, I couldn’t get the awful stuff off my teeth. I ran to Mom for help, and when I told her what I’d done, she laughed her head off! “Why didn’t you ask me if you could have some?” She gasped. “If you had, I would have told you it was Crisco!” I learned a valuable lesson that day: Honesty is the best policy. I wasn’t exactly being dishonest when I snuck a taste of the Crisco, but I wasn’t being upfront with my mom, either. I wanted to get away with something — and oh, boy, did I regret it. Now that I’m all grown up, my perspective on honesty has evolved a little. Dave and I often talk about “tactful honesty,” and that’s what I use now in all of my relationships — whether I’m talking to him, someone on my team, or a client. Tactful honesty is the opposite of brutal honesty. Instead of looking at someone in a brand-new dress and saying, “Wow, that makes your butt

look big!” you can say, “Sweetheart, you always look beautiful, but I prefer your other dresses.” See the difference? Dishonesty and brutal honesty are both terrible ways to communicate. If you lie and say you love the dress, you’ll have to see it over and over, and if you’re brutally honest, you’ll probably make the other person cry. Tactful honesty is a happy medium and it’s what I always use with clients. Ideally, they’ll be honest with me, too … but I’m not always so lucky. Turn to Pg. 2 to find out why it’s so important to be honest with your lawyer. If you’re not, the results can be even worse than a mouthful of Crisco — and that’s really saying something!

I had two options:

1. I could ask Mom whether I could eat the icing. 2. I could sneak a little bit in secret.

Dinner would be ready soon, so I assumed Mom wouldn’t let me have a taste if I asked. Rather than getting permission, I stuck my finger in the bowl, scooped up a big old glob of icing, and stuck it in my mouth.

GREENER PASTURES

Have a Beautiful Lawn With Less Work

A s we head into spring, it’s time to fire up the mower and break out your hedging shears. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you want your yardwork to take all day. If you’d rather be doing anything else, these tips will help you put away your gardening gloves all that much faster. And if maintaining the lawn and garden is your Zen time, they’ll give you time for new projects to beautify your home. Vanquish weeds naturally. Dandelions are ugly, but weedkillers are pricey and bad for the environment. If you’re battling weeds, attack them naturally with a pot of boiling water. The heat will kill the plants instantly, so this tip works best for isolated weeds growing between cracks in the pavement. If you’re

Mow smarter, not harder. For most people, mowing is their most time- consuming outdoor maintenance task. Since you spend so much time on it, you need some hacks. First, don’t bag or rake your lawn clippings; use the mulch setting instead. It’s easier and better for your lawn. Second, if you mow in rows, it’s time to switch up your routine. Instead, work in a spiral, starting at the edges of the lawn and working inward. You’ll save both time and energy when you don’t have to wrestle the mower into sharp 180-degree turns. Love it or hate it, lawn care needs to get done. These tips will help you get the process finished quicker, so you can get back to doing the things you love — whether that’s watching TV or planting even more flowers.

planting your garden, lay down old newspaper before mulching. It will prevent weeds from popping up, and the separate sheets make it easier to work with than landscaping fabric. Make watering easier. If you want a lush lawn and garden, watering is essential. But doing it too frequently can be wasteful — and that’s if you manage to remember. Try only watering your lawn twice a week, but for lengthier periods. About 20 minutes should do the trick, and you’ll save water overall. Meanwhile, if you struggle to remember to water the garden, automate the process cheaply. Take water bottles, poke two or three holes in the cap with a needle, and bury them upside-down around your plants. The slow trickle will keep them watered for a week or more.

3 REASONS HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY NEVER, EVER LIE TO YOUR LAWYER!

If you’ve been part of a lawsuit, then you know the process can trigger complicated feelings. You might feel embarrassed about what you said to the other driver at the site of your car crash, confused about what happened, or scared of the consequences if your lawyer knows you had alcohol in your system. You might even be tempted to keep the truth quiet to protect yourself.

We understand that temptation, but to give yourself the best shot at winning your case, you must be 100% honest with your lawyer about the circumstances of the crash, your medical history, your financial situation, and more. There are dozens of reasons for this, but here are three big ones:

for work or just found out your spouse was cheating? Tell your attorney! The more you let us into your mind, the better we can advocate for you during negotiation or in front of a jury. A lie could cost you your case. This is the big one. Your lawyer will argue your case based on the information you give them, and if you don’t give them all of the facts, then you’re putting them at a disadvantage and setting yourself up for a loss. The other attorney could find out what you’re hiding and

When your lawyer knows about a potential problem, they can be proactive to solve it. If you’re not 100% sure whether the light was red or yellow during your collision, but you don’t tell your lawyer that, they could be totally blindsided in the courtroom and fumble your defense! Honesty will give us the time we need to get to the bottom of your concerns and prepare for attacks. The better your lawyer knows you, the better they can advocate for you. Were you distracted on the road because you were late

reveal it to everyone, or your lawyer could discover it and realize your case is actually unwinnable. It’s best to be honest up front to save yourself time and money, and ensure the best possible settlement. If you’re in the middle of a case and have something to share with your lawyer, it’s never too late! Call or email us today to strengthen your case.

BARKS FROM BELLA AM I A BAD DOG?

HAVE A LAUGH!

Mom and Dad tell me I’m a good dog all the time, but once, a long time ago, I was a bad dog. I still feel awful about it, but I promise I was just trying to be like my mom, Melissa! See, Mom has things that she puts on her paws that make her really happy. They look cool, too — she has great taste! She slides her paws into them and then goes all over the house making a click-clack sound like my nails make on the hardwood floor. When she’s not using the things, they sit in a place called her closet.

PECAN CREAM PIE

Inspired by TogetherAsFamily.com

This creamy pecan pie tastes like a dream and is simple enough for even a novice baker.

INGREDIENTS

I was having a bummer day once (dinner was far away and the horses wouldn't play with me), and I thought, “What would Mom do to feel better?” Then, I remembered her paw things! I went into the closet to get them, but when I stuck my paws in they wouldn’t stay on. Dang! Maybe I could try them another way. I decided to chew on them like a bone, and it was so much fun. Mom was right, these things were great! I chewed right through the wooden part and started pulling off the little beads. I thought Mom would be proud of me for appreciating her good taste. But after a while, I got a bad feeling. The paw things didn’t look the same anymore. Maybe they wouldn’t fit Mom right! As soon as I realized that, I stopped chewing and hid under the bed. I was worried she would be mad at me … and I was right! When Mom got home and found what I’d done, she was SO upset. I felt like her fur was standing up straight and her ears were all the way back! She made me go outside and stay out there for hours. I guess she needed the paw things for work, and now I’d ruined everything. I was so, so sorry. While outside, I swore to myself that I’d never chew on anything else without Mom’s permission. I only chew on antler treats now, and no one has called me a bad dog in years. Here’s my best advice for all the other dogs out there: Good dogs don’t sneak! -Bella

Taking your water with you in a large bottle reminds you to keep sipping wherever you go. Every chance you get, fill it up.
