Looking for a simple way to transform your health? Look no further!
So what’s the secret to reducing inflammation?
What else can you do to reduce inflammation?
Eat an anti-inflammatory diet! Anti- inflammatory diets are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and healthy fats which your body needs to thrive. To eat an anti-inflammatory diet look for organic fruits
While diet is one of the most powerful ways to reduce inflammation in the body, there are certainly other things you can do in your daily routine. It is important to make it a priority to move your body everyday, even if it’s just for 20 minutes. Simple, low-impact movement, like yoga, is another great way to get the blood flowing. If you don’t already exercise, start with daily 30 minute walks around the block. These small changes can become habits over time if you stick with it. Using a sauna, getting 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and staying hydrated also help reduce inflammation. The most important aspect in combating inflammation is to start making changes in your lifestyle now. Make a commitment for better personal health. Reduce inflammation - your body will thank you.
Let’s talk about: inflammation.
Inflammation is the body’s natural response to injury, infection, or illness. It’s so common that statistics have shown that three out of every five deaths are the result of chronic inflammatory diseases…three in five! When your body is overwhelmed by environmental toxins, smoking, injury or a poor diet, your body’s defense system will respond causing not-so-fun symptoms such as redness, swelling, heat, pain, and loss of function. Chronic inflammation is so severe that it is linked to a wide range of diseases and health conditions including anxiety, depression, cancer, heart disease, lupus, ADHD, and more. Luckily, there are many things you can do to fight inflammation, even without the use of medication!
and vegetables, especially berries, tomatoes, avocados, bell peppers,
mushrooms, broccoli, and brussel sprouts. Nuts, seeds, and green tea/matcha are other great options. These foods are nutritional powerhouses! Turmeric, curcumin, garlic and ginger are also incredibly nutritious and perfect spices to sprinkle on your meals.
Are there foods you should avoid on an anti-inflammatory diet?
Pre-made and processed foods with artificial sugar, gluten and dairy can irritate your gut and lead to inflammation in the body. It’s time to ditch the fried foods, inflammatory oils (like canola oil) and refined carbs. These foods are not doing your body any favors. When you can, stick to organic, whole foods–foods that are grown directly from the earth.
How should you get started on the anti- inflammatory journey?
First things first, ease your way into this new lifestyle. Cutting out all junk food “cold turkey” can cause you to run right back to the addicting inflammatory foods. It’s okay to start small! Focus on incorporating a new anti-inflammatory fruit or vegetable into your diet every week.

Winter fashion is filled with lush fabrics and lavish designs. No matter the item, the season is ripe with fashion treasures. Accessories for winter are often the most luxurious. They can take any outfit from fine to fabulous with the special touch they bring. We are heading quickly into the cold weather winter brings. Let’s look at some of the top accessory trends you can expect to see in stores and worn around town this winter. Popular outerwear accessories this season include gloves…and more gloves. Long gloves traveling up the forearm were a top trend at the winter runway shows. Fingerless, faux fur trimmed, and rich colors are all on trend this season. Have you seen an abundance of large pom-pom hats? That’s because they are the top style for women, particularly when paired with a matching, extra-long scarf. Cable-knits and other snug fabrics are what you will find when browsing for the style. Footwear trends this season feature boots going higher and higher – this year landing thigh-high. Alternatively, you may prefer one of the many styles featuring embellishments like appliques, lace, and sparkly faux stones. Heeled loafers and lug-heeled low boots are also hot styles. Slippers and flats can only be described as furry and fluffy, with faux fur or marabou. Two significant trends for handbags are polar opposites: extra-large, super- sized totes and/or smaller clutches shown in super-soft leathers. Minimalist black bags featuring large-scale logos are
another top trend. In fact, large logos are popping up on belt buckles and crossbody bags, and an array of other accessories. Do you love jewelry as part of your ensemble? Try a chunky, chain-link bracelet or necklace paired with statement earrings. Pearls are experiencing their fifteen minutes of fame, turning up on clothes, accessories, shoes, and more. Looking for an accessory that is retro, practical, and stylish? Try a hair-wrap or scarf. Patterns this season are bold and beautiful, softened by the lux silks they adorn. Wear them to tie your hair back or to wind-proof your look on a blustery day (I suggest a few hair pins to hold it in place). You will radiate style and nostalgia with this retro accessory completing your look. Other top trends include lots of faux fur on seemingly everything (a few mentions above should make this no surprise), bright colored and bold patterned tights, socks that make a statement, and large brooches. It’s difficult to purchase all the trends for a season, and no one would suggest that you do. Instead, see what you like in stores, on mannequins, and in magazines. Choose a few that speak to your sense of style and that you can add to your wardrobe seamlessly. Perhaps consider one item that has you stepping outside your comfort zone. You’ll update your look without breaking the bank. Remember, this season is about comfort, sparkle, and feeling fabulous. Whatever you wear, make sure it speaks to all three.

booths, makes the space sophisticated and hip. There is an upper level, perfect for family/corporate gatherings with an adjoining room that can accommodate up to ninety guests for any private affair. The main dining room has an open floor plan, lined with circular booths, with rich wooded floor and tables. Accentuated by soft neon lighting and fireplace delivers a contemporary yet warm setting. As the owners explain it, the Limani concept is all about providing its patrons with an experience that begins with locally sourced farm products and the freshest seafood brought in from the Mediterranean. To provide customers with Greek hospitality that is both authentic and simplistic in its presentation, has always been the goal. Yes, Limani Grille is stunning, but for me, it is always about the food.We began with three of their most popular starters, dubbed “Limani Shareables” Octopus; presented thinly sliced, sashimi style, piled atop razor thin ribbons of red onion and capers with olive oil drizzle, had a melt in your mouth quality. Sensational! Limani Chips: paper thin slices of eggplant and zucchini, laced with little hidden gems of lightly fried Grecian cheese. Served with a side of tzatziki for dipping was simply addictive.Tomato Salad; a traditional Greek dish with a medley of ripe vine tomato, bell peppers, onions, cucumber, and feta wedge. Simplistic and fresh!
order. Limani Grille, a Mediterranean themed restaurant is no newcomer. With footprints in Manhattan, Roslyn and now Commack, this family-owned business has built a reputation for unsurpassed quality, service with an alluring ambience that makes the experience worth the trip. Just opening its doors early December, I was excited about the chance to meet with the owners of Limani Grille and learn more about their vision and latest ex- pansion. If you have ever been to Limani of Roslyn, then you already know it is an upscale hot spot and by some measures, above average menu prices. The good news is, Limani Grille of Commack, delivers the same dining experience, but at price points more fitting to Commack and surrounding area. Though it is evident of the changes that were made to the exterior of the former, Limani Grille, has com- pletely reinvented its interior. A refreshing bright and open space with a lounge that boasts a massive bar of marble, complimented by cocktail tables and comfortable

Following suite were our entrees. Swordfish: three generous skewered cuts of charcoal seared swordfish, accompanied by bell peppers, onions, and tomato. Served with lemon potato wedges is a classic Mediterranean dish and a must try. Lamb Chops: three good sized chops, perfectly grilled to a medium rare.A staple Limani dish high in demand. Limani Grille Burger: with the popularity of burgers, more restaurants are throwing them into the mix.The fanatic that I am, passing up on a good burger is next to impossible. A generous 8 oz. patty chargrilled, smothered in caramelized onions, with sauteed mushrooms, bacon, and white cheddar. Served with large cut fries delivered on its promise. Needed to leave room, so I left half behind, to try yet one more entrée. Filet Mignon Kebabs: tender morsels of beef, with charred exterior was cooked to a prefect medium rare; savory and delicious. Served with pita and tzatziki for dipping suggested that I sandwich the beef in the pita with sauce. Authentically Greek and whimsical. Dessert selections are plentiful, all of which are made by their on-premises bakers. Here are a few that come highly recommended. Ekmek: a shredded phyllo layered pastry with custard and pistachio whipped cream. Exceptionally light and not overly sweet. Try it, you’ll like it! Karidopita: a delightful walnut sponge cake with a dash of cinnamon, cloves and honey syrup was light and flavorful.Though I am not a fan of store-bought yogurt, nothing beats the fresh sweet taste of authenticity.Yaourti; a Greek yogurt with thyme, honey, blueberries, and walnuts was firm and creamy. The perfect palate cleanser and with a cappuccino, nothing could be more gratifying. Limani Grille also offers three course Prix-Fixe for lunch at $26 and dinner for $32.They are available on specific days, so call and inquire. When this review was prepared, Limani Grille, after 12 months of construction finally opened its doors. With their long history of opening successful restaurants in Manhattan, Nassau County and now in Commack, there is no doubt, this family operated business will continue to deliver a unique Mediterranean dining experience that will appeal to a broad audience of patrons.

We have bid good-bye to the year 2021 with its challenges and rays of hope. Many of us have endured illness, separation from loved ones, and work challenges while being sequestered at home for longer than we ever expected. For some, it was a time to take a good hard look at our surroundings. Being home forces folks to face their demons – the worn, torn or broken, and the giant elephant in the room – clutter. We can rationalize our clutter in many more ways than before the pandemic, but we can’t will it away. January is the month of resolutions about our health, our relationships, our finances, and our homes. It ends in 31 days and that’s usually about the time our resolve ends as well. We can think about changing and that is good, but if we don’t take some action, life will get in the way of our good intentions. Taking control of our lives is important to our well-being and, it feels good! So, let’s clean up our act and start to get organized, ridding ourselves of our weighty clutter – physically and emotionally. Action is the critical word. Even one small action and the great feeling of accomplishment that follows, can trigger a whole set of actions! So where to begin to help us succeed when we feel overwhelmed? • You must really want to change, so stop being defensive and making excuses. • Start by making a plan of what’s needed to be done that works for your schedule (even if you don’t know exactly where to start – start somewhere!) • Allot a block of time when you won’t be rushed or pressured, (get into some comfortable clothes and put on some music).
• Assign a manageable task (cleaning out one drawer, one closet, etc.). • Accomplish this task by not only organizing what’s in that space, but by throwing out or giving away what’s no longer used or needed. • Reward yourself (take a hot bath, get a massage, buy something new to put in the space you cleaned) or – feel so good that you want to continue and tackle another space! • Don’t overdo it physically or emotionally. • Plan your next project and set-up a future schedule. • Always keep the larger goal in mind, but reach it by continuing to accomplish a series of smaller, more manageable tasks. • Now that you’ve got the hang of it, try to always keep clutter under control. If a space takes no more than 15 minutes to clean up, you’re a winner! You will discover that organizing is like a game. Once you learn the rules and play it for a while, you can get really good at it. And when you’re able to let go of your stuff, you’ll feel happier and so will those around you; you’ll even feel lighter. It’s also a fact that one successfully accomplished resolution generally leads to another. So, if your reward for getting organized is a gym membership instead of a hot fudge sundae, 2022 might be your best year ever, no matter what else is going on around you.

I t should be evident that the post pandemic era has crushed local businesses all across our beautiful island. Combined with the onslaught of E-commerce, the Mom and Pop shops that built our communities, con- tinue to be challenged. Thank good- ness, there is a shimmering light, as many continue to muster up the strength to keep fighting for their place in local markets. Selmer’s Petland has been Long Is- land’s favorite pet destination for eighty-two years, making them the oldest family-owned of its kind in the U.S. It all began when Bruno and Helen Selmer moved to Huntington, into a small house on two-lane, Jericho Turnpike. In 1941, Bruno decided to enclose the front porch of their home and start selling a small selection of pets and supplies. He even renovated the garage and created a space for breeding dogs and birds too. Today, owner Al Selmer (son of Bruno and Helen), along with his daughter Jessica, take pride in carry- ing the traditions of this successful family-owned business. “As the head- quarters for all things pet-related, we enjoy serving and meeting the needs of our customers. Our three floors are fully stocked with merchandise that is designed to meet the demand of both our live-stock and supplies,” says Al. Selmer’s has a wide selection of American Kennel Club, American Ca- nine Association as well as designer crossbreeds, all of which come from le- gitimate breeders. You can be assured that the staff at Selmer’s has been pro- fessionally trained in pet socialization and provide daily exercise routines to keep their pets in excellent health.
are coming in to add a new member to your family, or visiting to shop for food and supplies, the friendly and knowl- edgeable staff at Selmer’s is eager to please. From the finest birds, fish, puppies, reptiles, and small animals to the best grooming services, supplies and more, Selmer’s will not disappoint. HERE’S WHAT SOME OF SELMERS CUSTOMERS HAVE BEEN SAYING… Lori D ★★★★★ Jessica is amazing and so caring. We bought our Daisy who is a full breed Shih Tzu at 4 months old and she has a beautiful disposition and loves other dogs and people in general. I highly recommend Selmers. Nov. 22, 2021 Frank L ★★★★★ This is the 3rd dog that we have purchased from Selmer's. I can't begin to tell you how happy we were each time. Our experience just keeps getting better and better. Would not go anywhere else. Jessica's ability to pair a dog with an owner is uncanny. The staff also could not be more helpful. Sept. 29, 2021 Alissa ★★★★★ I hit GOLD. My puppy is beyond amazing. Her temperament is amazing! She is sweet, loving, playful but also chill! She is almost 8 months now and she is the little love of my puppy life!) Thank you for this wonderful dog. We love her so darn much! Sept. 24, 2021
This includes grooming and health checks to ensure the well-being of all dogs. To be sure you get your new puppy off on the right track, Selmer’s partners with licensed veterinarians and offers full packages to make cer- tain that your puppy gets the proper care from the very beginning. As Jessica, owner of Selmer’s ex- plains it, “It’s not about selling pup- pies. Its more about matching the right person or family with our pup- pies, while providing a life experience that will make the new owners and puppy thrive in their new environ- ment”. After 80 years of serving cus- tomers in Nassau and Suffolk County, Selmer’s has become the most trusted source in the business. Whether you

PREP TIME: 15 minutes BAKE TIME: 20 - 25 minutes SERVINGS: 12 muffins (cupcake pan size)
HERE IS HOW YOU DO IT: Preheat oven 375 degrees – line or grease 12 cupcake size pan. Combine flour, baking powder, and salt in a medium-sized bowl and set aside. In a large bowl, melt butter and add sugar; stir. Add in eggs one at a time until combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl with each addition. Slowly pour in ½ of the flour mixture; mix until combined. Add vanilla extract to the milk, then pour half the milk into the bowl; mix again until combined. Add in remaining flour; beat until combined and do the same with the milk. Try not to over-mix; blend these ingredients until batter is free of any lumps. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons remaining sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Add in 1/4 cup batter to the cinnamon sugar and stir. Pour remaining batter into a muffin pan lined with muffin paper cups. Fill the muffin pan about ¼ of an inch from the top, then divide the cinnamon batter evenly and swirl it into the cupcake with a toothpick. Place the muffin pan on top of a cookie sheet and then bake in the oven. Enjoy warm with butter. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for 5 days or freeze for 1 month.

and is an exercise in hope. In an age, when everyone is plugged into a life among electronic gadgets, seeing greenery helps us feel calmer and more relaxed. There are practical benefits to houseplants as well. Houseplants are good for your health. They refresh the air we breathe by releasing oxygen. They also filter out harmful toxins given off by the furnishings and carpets we live with. Increased levels of oxygen means improved levels of concentration, productivity, and creativity. Houseplants add to our overall happiness and longevity. Without plants we wouldn’t exist at all; yet many of us take them for granted. However, there is no denying their importance to our well being; so, the more you add to your interior spaces the better.
It should be made official; January is houseplant month. There’s a feel- ing of emptiness in the post Christmas season after the Christmas tree comes down. The home immediately misses that big beautiful, lush green tree that took center stage in so much celebration. A home’s inte- rior can feel as stark as the winter scenery looks outside. The easy way to chase away these winter blues is to add some green back into the scene. Nothing adds visual beauty to an environment faster than houseplants. They’re an inexpensive way to add texture and drama to a room by creating a living space that’s relaxing to be in with a low to moderate investment of money and time. It’s easy and fun to make your own private sanctuary; and whether you have a green thumb or black one, there’s a plant to match your skill level at growing things. It is wonderfully therapeutic to care for another living thing, especially one that only gives you rewards. Caring for a houseplant is a natural antidepressant. It’s a reminder to tune into your environment

A roasted butternut squash (with sausage) soup, blended together with lentil soup. Combining these delicious soups together brings out amazing flavors and yes, Luck...for the New Year. The real find for me here was adding the unique spice called Rasel Hanout—a North African spice blend which when interpreted means, “The best you can buy in the store” or “Head of the shop.” I ordered it online and absolutely loved the flavor. Some of the many spices found in Rasel Hanout include: ground coriander, allspice, cumin, cardamom, cinnamon, fenugreek, grains of paradise, cayenne pepper, nutmeg, turmeric, paprika, ginger, rose petals and oregano. The warm, delicious aromatic taste is sure to inspire your culinary repertoire and palate. Lentil Soup was traditionally served in my family on New Year’s Day to bring luck. The round shape of lentils are considered both a symbol of prosperity and good luck, either way, a great soup to start off 2022. May it be a Happy New Year! Enjoy! xoxo Denise FOR BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP: 2 medium butternut squash, peeled and cut into pieces, brushed with olive oil and roasted in oven until soft. 8 Italian sausage links decased, broken into pieces and browned in a frying pan, (drain and let cool). 1 large can of chicken broth
Blend sausage and butternut squash together (in small batches, using a blender). Set aside. FOR LENTIL SOUP: 1 16 ounce bag of organic lentils 2 Vidalia onions chopped 2 T fresh chopped parsley 1 leek chopped 1 fennel cut into pieces (save fronds for garnish) 3 stalks celery diced 5 carrots diced
5 T extra virgin olive oil 1 large can chicken broth 1.5 T Rasel Hanout
Using a large pot, sauté onions and leeks in olive oil until soft. Add celery, carrots, fennel, and lentils, (sauté for 3 minutes) and then add chicken broth. Cover and let soup cook on medium heat until lentils and vegetables are tender. Now blend the soup in blender, saving 2 ladles unblended for texture. Mix unblended with blended. Now fold together both the butternut squash soup and lentil. Add 1.5 T of the Rasel Hanout spice and blend well. Add parsley and taste for salt and pepper or additional Rasel Hanout if desired. Garnish with fennel fronds.

First, a story.
After speaking at a conference about research I did on career planning, I was dumbfounded by how many attendees sought me out afterwards and shared their confusion and frustration about why they felt they had ineffective career plans. All were worried that they had blown it. One was a Harvard MBA, another a senior-level executive who felt “stuck,” and last was a very imaginable scenario in between. The crushing blow of not fulfilling one’s career aspirations is saddening. It fills the individual with self-doubt and low self-esteem. This does not have to be the case. Here are some easy-to-do actions from my research.
• Create a Feedback Rich Environment
Unless you are in the “twilight years” of your career, intentionally fly out of your cocoon as you progress towards realizing your career ambitions. Explore your marketability and find out what other organizations would be willing to pay for your talents. You have nothing to lose and potentially quite a bit to be gained. Realizing your career ambitions requires a thoughtful plan, a willingness to assess and build your capabilities, and the insight to periodically break out of your cocoon. Yes, at times luck plays a role. But who would want to leave something as impor tant as one’s career satisfaction to that!
Job holders tend to refrain from seeking out feedback while career builders are constantly hungry for it. We all have blind spots that if left unilluminated will eventually jeopardize the fulfillment of our occupational goals. The math whiz who ignores feedback on his “saturated with smar ts” demeanor, will miss the chance to balance his gift with the empathy, collaboration, and cooperation needed to succeed in the present business environment. His inability to play nicely in the corporate sandbox will crush his career ascent. One of the best things you can do in your career planning strategy is to create a feedback rich environment. Becoming comfor table hearing about your blind spots from your boss, co-workers and colleagues costs you nothing and can have a huge payback.
• Mirror, Mirror, on the Wall
An intelligent career plan begins with an in-depth objective, as well as subjective assessment of your passions, talents, the things that you do not have the abilities to excel at, and the oppor tunities and restrictions that your personal situation presents. For example, if you cannot stand not having the approval of others, or being disliked, you will never find fulfillment in a supervisory or management job. These roles require comfor t with conflict and making unpopular decisions. Perhaps you want to be a hugely successful real estate sales representative yet have family obligations or a lifestyle that will create stress and tension as you struggle with the work life balance that comes with this profession. Having gone through such a deep introspective process you can develop a career plan that will be realistic and fulfilling.
• Avoid the “Cocoon Trap”
In just 9-14 days, caterpillars break out of their cocoons and turn into butter flies. Then they fly away. With time, most people build a work cocoon at their employer, especially if they like it there. As the years go by, they become increasingly comfor table, cozy, and most impor tantly, develop feelings of being safe. It becomes easy to live with the status quo versus taking a test flight out of their cocoons.

Our ports for the week were: Passau, Linz, Weissenkirchen, Vienna, Bratislava, and Bu- dapest. Each day AMA (as most river cruises do), included a full or half day sightseeing tour. My favorite one of the week was the all-day tour to Salzburg, Austria from Linz. I loved to see the church where the wedding from Sound of Music was filmed. Vi- enna and Budapest are now on my “must return to list,” because the few hours we spent there hadnʼt even scratched the sur- face of these wonderful cities. Day 7 of the cruise was a tad stressful, as we had to take COVID tests that morning to be able to fly back to the USA the next day. AMA brought techni- cians right on board to give us the tests. Thankfully, we were both negative, as was everyone else that was tested that day, and a happy sigh of relief was felt among all the passengers. Guidelines to return to the USA change all time. To see the current rules, click on https://www.cdc.gov/coron- avirus/2019-ncov/travelers/test- ing-international-air- travelers.html So if you are motivated...Eu- ropean travel is back. It was a lot of hoops to jump through to make it happen, but Iʼm so glad we did. Bring on more hoops...Iʼm ready!
We recently returned from our first cruise in 2 years as well as our first trip to Europe since the Pandemic. I chose an AMA Waterways “Romantic Danube” river cruise, because during the depths of the pandemic in March 2020, AMA Waterways generously offered a "Front Line Medical Heroes" buy one get one free discount. It was an in- credibly thoughtful and timely gesture; we signed up wonder- ing when European travel would begin again. Well...18 months later, it did for us and was truly a fantastic week. All packed up and ready to go takes on a new meaning these days. As my mom used to say, “When you travel you have to make sure to pack a lot of patience.” We had to keep not only our passports close at hand but our vaccine cards and print- ed negative test results as well. You will also need to fill out the entry paperwork for the country you are flying into. I printed back up paperwork for all the forms I had filled out on- line, just in case I couldn't pull them up on my phone when needed. Negative COVID tests and Vaccine cards in hand, we flew to Munich and were picked up (by an AMA shuttle) and brought to the ship. We settled in for a week of exciting new cities, deli- cious food and lovely new friends.
