Though 22 years have gone by since his passing, I have vivid memories of him and the meaningful impact he had on my life. He ful- filled his responsibility as a father, as I fulfilled my devotion and respect for him as a son. In his own quiet way, my father had always been there for me. Though my dad rarely expressed his feelings outright, I never doubted the love he had for me. He would always tell my mother how he felt; she in turn, would share with me my father’s thoughts. My father loved everyone and all of nature’s beauty. He was a true outdoorsman. I recall stories of my Father hand feeding turtles and a school of sunfish, that came up to the water’s edge in a canal by their home. He adored nature and respected it–a kind of mod- ern day Dr. Doolittle. My father served honorably in the US Army during World War II, yet we never once spoke about his experiences. After his passing, I learned that Dad earned eight medals for his service. I proudly display them, along with his ceremonial folded flag, in my office.
My father has been an inspiration to me in many ways. He taught me to look at adversities in my life as nothing more than a hurdle to over- come. I also learned to honor and respect oth- ers, even when conflicts arise. I have fond memories of dad leading us into the Canadian wilderness, staying in log cabins on a remote lake–just for a bass or pike. These are the experiences that brought our family ties close. I know this, because as my father did, I too have enjoyed similar experiences with my family. Dad brought song into our home too! And what a voice he had. Most said he sounded like, “Ol Blue Eyes”. Influenced by his musical ability, I had a bit of a rock and roll band growing up. As a result, my love of music has influenced my children. Hard working, honorable and gentle, best describe this man that I loved and miss. Through our family experiences and his non- conventional way of influencing me, my father truly impacted my life. When he passed 22 years ago, there were no regrets nor guilt. My father made me proud of the man he had be- come, and I made him proud for the man I had become. And that makes me feel complete . In Honor of all Dads Happy Father’s Day.
Miss You Pop

As the temperatures rise and the days get longer, fabrics lighten up, accessories add some sparkle, and summer shoes get you ready to step out into the sunlight. As we all start to get out and about again, we look for the balance of comfort we’ve gotten used to and styles we’ve missed. This year’s shoe and accessory fashions have a great blend of both, making it a unique mixture that is something special. Footwear trends this season abound, covering styles for every taste. Super high platform heels are the single-most prevalent style of the season, making an ap- pearance with most of the top de- signers. Espadrilles are, perhaps, the champion of the year, coming in as a top summer style for the third season in a row. Sandals are up on heels, with pillow twisted tops [personally, I am a big fan of these, but I need to decide on which color(s) to choose]. For a more relaxed look, try a flip flop with an elevated bottom, adding style and height, a skater boy sneaker, or fisherman sandal that will add both fashion and form. ‘Naked shoes’ are a hot item for the season, with color along the sole and heel, and a ‘naked’ piece along the top of the foot. Summer loafers are a lovely, sur- prising treat for the summer of ’22.You’ll find them in light- weight raffia and woven fabrics that go with many of the styles of the season.Worn without socks, summer loafers make any ensem-
ble look smart. Mary Janes, both heeled and flats, and kitten- heeled slingbacks round out the roster of top footwear trends to add the pop to your wardrobe from the floor up. Accessory trends for the season feature gold chain or wide waist belts, crossbody bags (in all kinds of shapes and colors) and large tote bags. Need a new hat for the season? Berets with nets will make a great statement. Looking for something a little more casual? Try a head scarf with a bold print to add pop to your summer ensemble. Jewelry this season features chunky chain necklaces. Look for them in either a single chunky strand or a double strand with one chunky and one thin. Choker length necklaces are the length of choice. And, if you prefer ear- rings, choose a statement pair in gold that sit right on the lobe. This season, look for neon high- lighter hues – pink, green, yellow, and purple, along with gold- toned accessories and flax-col- ored fabrics. Tans and classic whites are, of course, ever-pre- sent and appear in nearly every trend I’ve mentioned. So, after the long winter and more than a few seasons of Covid, step outside in something comfortable and stylish. Let the sun shine on you now that summer has arrived.

W hen it comes to optimal health, you cannot overlook your body’s basic needs. As a Naturopathic Doctor, I believe in giving each of my patients the tools that they need to feel their best. Proper hydration is overlooked and misunderstood by a landslide. Most people are not drinking nearly enough water. Nor is the quality good. Let’s get all of the facts straight here, so you and your family can give your body the delicious liquid of life cor- rectly. So why is proper hydration so im- portant? Our body consists mostly of water. Age plays a factor, but on av- erage more than 60% of our body is water. Muscle contains more water than fat. More muscle = more water. More fat = less water. Get fit and hy- drate! Seems so simple, yet it is as- tounding how this advice is difficult to follow. I see a lot of health complaints in my practice connected with a lack of adequate water consumption. Con- stipation, weight gain, depression,
The answer: use glass or stainless steel water bottles. Remember to clean your water bottles and the tops regularly. Bacteria can get caught in the lids and straws which contami- nates the oral microbiome which is your mouth and gums. That bacteria travels into your gastrointestinal tract which can lead to major digestive dysfunction. The amount of water you drink is key. Drink half of your body weight in ounces. For example: If you weigh 120 lbs, then drink 60 oz of water. On those hot and humid days, don’t for- get to add electrolytes to your water. Workout and drink up for your health!
anxiety, insomnia, brain fog, fatigue, muscle/joint pain, dry skin, dry eyes, sore throat, dizziness, and digestive upset may all be remedied by drink- ing more water. Our nervous system actually finds relief and relaxation when properly hydrated. It is stress- ful to be dehydrated. Our bodies con- fuse hunger and dehydration too. Blood sugar dysregulation can occur. When dehydrated, we will be more prone to reach for a sugary snack. So, drink a glass of water and get your metabolism functioning properly. Choose excellent quality water. Get your water tested if you are unsure. Avoid plastic bottles at all costs. The chemical processing of plastic bottles plus nanoparticles of plastic seep into the tissues of your body which cre- ates toxic load. Toxins get stored in fat tissue within your body. This is a major factor with weight loss. Toxins get stuck in adipose tissue and then fat cannot get burned off. BPA does not matter - any form of plastic is harmful for your health because the water absorbs its plastic contents.

E lvin and Elizabeth Paulino opened their first La Candela restaurant 17 years ago in Hicksville. Since then, they have expanded their business to Huntington, where they have be- come known for their elaborate presentation of the finest in Peruvian cuisine. Huntington has also be- come popular for holding unique events with a private party room that accommodates up to 150 guests. No matter what size your party may be, La Candela and its professional catering staff is ready to host a day you will certainly remember for years to come. Today the La Candela tradition continues with the opening of their third location in Commack. Same great food with a more intimate setting. Popular dishes include their well-known Ceviche that heightens the senses of what fresh seafood is all about. This is only the beginning of a culinary adventure you are sure to enjoy. Peruvian cuisine is popular for its grilled meats and rotisserie chicken, with a refreshing diversity that gets you to think beyond the more mainstream eater- ies. Culinarily speaking, Peruvian cuisine has been influenced by cultures in Europe, Asia, and Africa, all of which add to its unique flavor profile.
While this is hardly a secret, Peruvian restaurants are cropping up all over our Island. The demand has come for a refreshing change, and this is exactly what La Candela brings to the table. Popular dishes you can find at La Candela, Commack include some amazing seafood specialties like their Arroz Con Mariscos; A Peruvian Paella with a bountiful portion of clams, mussels’ scallops, shrimps, and calamari served on a bed of rice. Who can resist what Peruvian cuisine is best known for? The Cevechi Mixto is ex- actly what it sounds like. The freshest medley of fish, shrimps and calamari all cooked in lemon juice, as fresh as the ocean can bring. La Candela is all about spices and big flavors, some clean and crisp like their ceviche’s, while others have more depth in flavor like their chicken and beef options. Elvin and Elizabeth with their extraordinary staff invite you to come and experience their unique Latin cuisine, like nothing you have ever tasted before. The menus at both Huntington and Commack lo- cations are different so please check their websites to learn more. Congrats La Candela on the expansion to the Commack area.

As the weather warms up, it may cause us to become impatient and want to start planting everything right away. While early-spring crops are fine, try to resist putting in tomatoes, cucumbers, and jalapenos, as warmer soil temperatures mean an easier transition for plants from inside (your home or nursery) to the garden. Also, hold off on putting down mulch until air temperatures are consistently in the 50’s or 60’s. This will allow the soil to warm quicker, promoting optimal plant growth. Remember that proper watering will support nutrient uptake, and ensure your soil has proper nutrients in addition to consistent water. If you plant your garden in the same place year after year, it is likely that the soil will require supplemental fertilizing. Organic forms of fertilizer include: pulverized oyster shells, manure, and compost. Some of the best compost can come from your own kitchen scraps! Avoid adding unwanted seeds, meat and fat or any other animal products into your compost pile. As you prepare your garden space, evaluate what might’ve changed since last year. Perhaps you’re in a neighborhood that’s recently become home to deer, as is happening in suburban areas throughout the country. There are a variety of ways to keep deer away from your prized gardens. Each method’s rate of success varies; for greatest protection, try a couple of options:
I put a bar near some tasty bulbs in the early spring, and they were left alone • Deer repellent: Look for an organic option that combines spices and dried blood to encourage deer to steer clear. The spices tend to be pleasant to human noses, and organic options will be safe for children and pets. The longest-lasting products will be granular or pelletized, and if it’s marketed to work even under snow, it should work in your mulched beds • Physical barriers: Deer can easily jump fences, even those as high as six feet. They are more likely to avoid jumping where they cannot see or sense the landing, so if you use border plantings along with a tall fence, it could be a winning combination. Otherwise, you may need to use netting or fencing immediately surrounding the garden. Make sure it’s too tall for the deer to reach over and that there is a small enough internal space they can’t jump inside. Be sure to secure all netting and fencing to avoid hurting any deer that try to get through. With a bit of planning and maintenance, you can be assured that your garden will be healthy and prolific all season long.
• Irish Spring soap: Deer supposedly dislike the smell.

As a lifelong carnivore, there is nothing I love more than a good steak. Crispy seared on the outside, medium-rare on the inside – simple, tasty, hearty. I’ve been perfecting my list of Long Island steakhouses for years now, con- stantly adding and removing based on lengthy visits with friends and family. For Father’s Day, there is nothing quite as wonderful as taking dad to a swanky steakhouse and going all-out – wine, sides, steak, desserts – the works. My safe six include: 2 Spring , Rothmann’s Steakhouse , Bryant & Cooper , Vintage Steakhouse , IMC Imperial Meat Company , and of course, Peter Luger Steak House . I’ve had unforgettable beef-induced experiences at each of these establishments and appreciate them for unique reasons, each offering some- thing distinctive. 2 Spring is “an American Brasserie highlighting fresh seafood, premium farm-to-table meats, and a deep wine list”. It is cozy and has some of my favorite starters (and cocktails) on Long Island. Begin your meal with the Fried Chicken, served with Cucumber, Yuzu & Togarashi. If you’re coming in just for your steak fi x, order their signature 14oz Brandt New York Strip served with an onion ring and herbs. Spoiler alert: You may never think of steak the same way again. The Executive Chefs are some of my newfound culinary heroes.
pany are all local, reputable go-to's. Signature steakhouse feel, awesome sides & cocktails, a good opportunity to skip the casual clothes and dress up – I recommend all of these awe- some spots. At Rothmann’s I opt for the Burger or the Prime Rib. At Bryant & Cooper, the Filet Cajun Style. When visiting Vintage Steakhouse, order the Tomahawk & Mac and Cheese. (Have dessert here too!) IMC Imperial Meat Company offers a chic atmosphere and enormous desserts. You can’t go wrong with the New York Strip Steak or Filet. (Great brunch and happy hour options too!) Last but not least, Peter Luger’s Steakhouse. Iconic, must-try, New York to the core. Splurge – order the expensive wine, the sides (my picks are the sizzling bacon, creamed spinach, and French fries), plus the desserts. Go all out. This place is special, and it’s no wonder it’s a New York foodie landmark. Do yourself a favor and order the steak for two, or three, or four (de- pending on your party size). No words can do justice to this juicy, perfectly cooked piece of meat – you just have to try it for yourself. If you’re not in the mood for steak, their burger is legendary. (Thank me later.) They offer loca- tions in Great Neck, and the iconic Williams- burg, Brooklyn on Broadway. This Father’s Day, treat dad to something spe- cial and visit one of my favorite steak houses. He deserves it.

“Everybody ought to have a lower East Side in their life.” Irving Berlin
A delightful way to spend the day is visiting the lower East Side of Manhattan. Drive or take the LIRR and then a brisk thirty minute walk downtown and you will arrive at the Tenement Museum on Orchard Street. Founded in 1988, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum explores the unique American story of immigration and the rich, You get to learn stories of tenement dwellers through guided tours of their two historic buildings at 97th and 103rd Orchard Street. Although the buildings were in ruins when found, they uncovered personal belongings and other evidence from the families (who called those apartments home), between the 1860’s and the 2000’s. The artifacts and the families who owned them became the foundation for what the Tenement Museum diverse landscape it continues to create. represents today: a belief that our national identity is best understood and appreciated through real- time stories of families whose lives have shaped our shared history.
Go to www.tenement.org to book your tour. On the day we visited, there were six different tours to choose from. We bought tickets ($30pp) for the “At Home in 1911” tour and we found it fascinating. An enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide takes you into a recreated tenement apartment of the family that actually lived there in 1911. The museum offers neighborhood walking tours as well. All tours meet at their beautifully curated gift shop that is located at 103rd Orchard Street. After our tour, we walked seven minutes up Orchard Street to Houston Street to have lunch at the world- famous, Katz’s Delicatessen. Upon entering, we received our tickets and stood in line for a piled-high lean corned beef sandwich and French fries—oh so delicious and oh so big! One sandwich can easily serve two. A perfect end to a perfect city day. A day that was satisfying for the soul as well as the stomach. Happy Travels!
