ET MAGAZINE - DECEMBER 2021

While people throughout the country are beginning to move about their daily lives once again, things are certainly far from ‘back to normal’. We are inching our way back to activities and occasions of all kinds. As we move into the holiday season, some will be planning traditional festivities while others will be planning for the merriment to take place right at home. How does this impact holiday fashion trends for this transitional year? Let’s look at the options at our fingertips. Holiday-wear is known for its sparkle …its celebratory flare. For those getting ready to head out for holiday parties, you will be thrilled to see slip dresses with sequins, pearls, or feathered trim. Earrings, purses, and pumps are being shown with similar embellishments; while any one can easily add pop to your ensemble, don’t go overboard. For example, if your dress is edged with feathered trim, avoid accessories with the same. It will overwhelm the look and diminish the effect. The same holds true for sequins and pearls. Choose one for your statement piece and let the rest of your ensemble serve to round out your look. If you are a fan of leather, you will find plenty to choose from. Whether your preference is pants, dress, or jacket, leather is a top choice this season – in traditional black and brown, along with several other color options. Corsets are another holiday trend being shown by many of today’s top designers. Corset dresses and tops are available, which can be paired with skirts

or trousers. You’ll find them in leather, lace, sheers, and a whole host of fabrics choose from. Heading to a small home gathering? Your top choices are patterned fancy trousers with one of the many soft, fluffy sweaters being shown. Try a wider leg option in a shimmery fabric with a sweater that fits close at the waist for a stylish, elegant look that is perfectly comfortable. Not a fan of sweaters? Lavish blouses in silks and other rich fabrics are readily available. Rather than a high heeled option, pair your outfit with plush, soft shoes that have all the comfort of your favorite slippers. If staying in is your plan, you’ll be happy to know that designers have you covered. Cozy and fabulous is the theme that runs through the options you’ll find. Try a 2-piece knit ensemble that will look charming and feel so soft on your skin. Perhaps you’d prefer a pair of swanky pajamas in silk, satin, or with an oh-so- soft faux fur edging. Holiday themed patterns abound, giving you endless choices for the perfect pair of pjs. No matter what look you’re going for, you’ll find plenty of red, black, winter white, purple, and, of course, silver and gold. Whether your holidays will be spent out and about, at a small gathering, or staying in and snuggling up, think glitz, glam, and cozy for the perfect find.

the weather is not as brutal, an outdoor jog in the fresh air may be exactly what you need. Whether jogging, walking, jumping, or strength training, ankle and foot stability are crucial. I like the Alphatorsion 2.0 Adidas. Made with engineered mesh, it hugs the foot securely, yet is breathable and flexible. The rubber sole has a grood grip and offers a springy bounce, making it a great running shoe. You may not choose this sneaker for lifting in the gym, however, it’s a great, affordable, and even stylish choice for home workouts. 5 - An exercise app. Free, inexpensive or pricey, there are tons of workout apps available. When you get bored or need a more intense challenge, these apps are essential. You’ll learn new exercises, be guided through a HIIT or strength training workout, and so much more. Pick one or ten!

kettlebell you can work your entire body. You can burn fat, build muscle, target specific areas, and work up a sweat to brag about. A kettlebell workout will also improve aerobic capacity, increase strength, build explosive power, and even improve balance. An adjustable kettlebell is a great option, it takes up hardly any space and you can increase intensity. You can go with an affordable Amazon find or the Bowflex kettlebell- which ranges from 8-40 lbs. 2 - Jump rope. A jump rope will take the place of your gym’s cardio machine. That’s right, jumping rope burns a ton of calories, increases the heart rate, and assists with hand-eye coordination. And, no need to jump rope for 20 minutes; you can jump for 30 seconds (at a moderate pace), or 20 seconds (fast paced), followed by a 30 second rest. Repeat for 10-12 minutes. 3 - Ankle Weights. One of my favorite tools for a lower body burn. Adding ankle weights to exercises like leg lifts, kickbacks, donkey kicks, step- ups, and V-ups, will give you a burn beyond your imagination. Portable, small and inexpensive, ankle weights are a must for targeting the legs, glutes, and core.

Let’s face it, when it’s cold and dark outside it can be difficult leaving the comfort of your home, especially for an activity like going to the gym. Winter has a way of sucking the motivation right out of us, which can impact our health and body goals. Just because the weather keeps us inside, doesn’t mean you have to skip a workout; you can get a killer workout without leaving the house. Expensive equipment is not necessary, although there are a few tools that will help make a successful home workout. Lose the excuses (and the weight) this winter with my top five tools for an ultimate home workout.

1 - Kettlebells. With just one

RUM AND COLA HOLIDAY HAM Recipe courtesy of Omaha Steaks Executive Chef David Rose Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 80 minutes Servings: 10-12

TO MAKE HAM: Thaw frozen ham in refrigerator 24-48 hours. Remove from refrigerator and let ham come to room temperature, about 30-45 minutes. Preheat oven to 325° F. Remove ham from foil and film. Return ham to foil wrapping and place in oven-safe roasting pan. Roll foil down leaving 2 inches of foil around bottom of ham. Place roasting pan with ham in oven on lower rack and heat uncovered 60-75 minutes, until ham starts to brown. While ham cooks, make glaze. TO MAKE GLAZE: In medium saucepot, whisk fruit spread, rum, cola, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard and salt until well incorporated. Bring to boil then reduce heat to medium. Simmer over medium heat 10 minutes then remove from heat. Cool to room temperature. During last 15 minutes of cooking, glaze ham every 5 minutes. #15913 Source: Omaha Steaks, Family Features

HAM: 1

Omaha Steaks Spiral-Sliced Ham (8 pounds)

GLAZE: 1

cup cherry fruit spread 3/4 cup dark spiced rum 3/4 cup cola 2

teaspoons Worcestershire sauce

1

tablespoon Dijon mustard

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

PEANUT BUTTER SALTINE CANDY Yield: 45 pieces

Nonstick cooking spray (butter flavor) 1 sleeve (4 ounces) regular saltine crackers 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter

1 2

cup granulated sugar

cups milk chocolate chips 1/2 cup peanut butter chips 1/2 cup rough chopped, dry roasted peanuts

Preheat oven to 400° F. Line 10-by-15-by-1-inch pan with aluminum foil. Spray foil with nonstick cooking spray then lay saltines flat in single layer on prepared pan. Set aside. In heavy duty, 1-quart saucepan over medium heat, combine butter, peanut butter and sugar. Stir constantly until butter and sugar are melted, bringing mixture to boil. Boil 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Pour cooked mixture over saltines and bake 5 minutes. Remove from oven and sprinkle chocolate chips over saltines. Let cool 3 minutes then spread melted chocolate completely over saltines. Sprinkle peanut butter chips evenly over chocolate. Return pan to oven 1 minute to soften chips. Pull pointed tines of fork through softened peanut butter chips to partially cover chocolate. Sprinkle chopped peanuts on top, gently pressing into candy. Let cool on rack about 15 minutes then place in freezer 3 minutes. Remove from freezer and break into pieces. Store in airtight container. #15914 Source: Georgia Peanut Commission
