In this world today people say you can be whatever you want. “I’m going to be an astronaut” used to be a popular thing you’d hear from young kids when asked what they want to be when they grow up. In the present, however, sometimes that seems a lot more achievable than some of my actual dreams. Savannah Williams- student

On one of my many post-retirement travels, I visited theWichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma. On a shor t hike, I came across this incredible, tranquil setting by a small river that triggered every memory of a similar scene from all the old westerns I used to see on TV as a child. I took several photos and chose one to paint in a workshop offered by the wonderful ar tist and Cheatham County native, Lisa Taylor. I did this in one setting and it occupies a prominent place in my house as a reminder of all the adventures I have taken over the years. So many years ago, while working at the employee’s cafeteria at the old Opryland Amusement Park in Nashville, one of the street artists for the park, left his/her watercolors on a table so with a little time on my hands, I did this little piece of a table setting in the cafeteria. I hope they don’t mind.

Debbie H. Fuson I have always felt at home in nature. Natural settings bring me peace. I truly love finding a subject to paint that shows the character of endurance and a true uniqueness of presence. It is my hope to capture the joy that creation brings to my hear t and share it with others.

Pat Millius I rarely use words to communicate. And when I paint, I don’t often use brushes. I’ll use my fingers, knuckles, knives, matchsticks, q-tips, sandpaper, and greasy napkins or anything within arms reach. I add layers just as often as I scrape them off, which is why I like to have a thick substrate. It sounds violent but it is not. It brings me a taste of the peace I crave, but in no way do I find it “relaxing”. My techniques developed this way over decades. I’ve had no more control over how they have evolved than I have over the way I sneeze or the way I laugh.Yes, I do laugh when I paint. In fact, I consider a painting successful only if it makes me laugh.

Phoenix Thornburg The time-honored ar t of preserving time through the photographic lens has long fascinated me.The viewfinder offers a structured limitation, inside which I find an outlet for exploration, reflection and expression. I am interested in the potential for time and space to be imprinted by energy and vibration, and try to translate this evocation of emotions by means of the photograph; storytelling. Living and working in rural Cheatham County has nourished the roots of my perspective with a constant flow of not only the profound and awesome beauty of nature found here, but also with local history and the lore.

I have been creating art since I was nine years old. By my late twenties to early thir ties, I began creating mosaics, mixtures of ink, watercolors, acrylics, and oils on canvas. I am passionate about my own creativity and inspired by other artists and most of all the creation that made me realized what I can do with “Faith”. I moved toTennessee from Connecticut in 2001 and lived in Clarksville,TN for awhile with my family and now I am residing in Dickson,TN. During my travels, I began building my por tfolio and utilizing anything I came across to create a sentimental, dramatic and interesting story on a canvas. Everywhere I’ve been, and everything I have encountered in life and experience, has become a part of my story on canvas and collage of memories and unique experience in life.

In the 60’s I learned the Craft of Making Ar t, then spent the next 3 decades learning How to Make a Life. In theWinter of 2000 I lost my best friend, husband and father of my children to an early death. In time, Our loss would be the catalyst that re-awakened the Creative Poet and Ar tist in my soul……… “A great love opens the heart. A great loss of love brings great pain. Great pain brings great passion into being. Great passion inspires great art. Great Art touches the soul. The Re-born soul learns to love once again. Art must be an expression of love or it is nothing.” Marc Chagall

Utilizing a bold, contemporary style full of color and life, dynamic angles and layers of tonal variations, I work primarily with acrylics on canvas to spread my love of people and music with the world. During my professional dance career, prior to raising my two sons, I experienced many moments of shared joy and powerful collective connections through different genres of music, no matter the country or language. Living on the outskirts of Nashville since 2007 has provided me the opportunity to interact with many world-renowned musicians who allow me to study their hands, instruments and techniques. In my music themed pieces I strive to convey the soulful message on canvas that they express in their songs. A lifetime of drawing with charcoal and graphite taught lessons in relation to composition, perspective and values which has been a launchpad for me as I have only been painting since 2016.

Barbara Allen

Born and raised in the Nashville Metropolitan area of Tennessee, Barbara Allen now resides in Ashland City,TN on a small farm with her husband.Waking up every day to the scenes and sounds of nature, her love for ar t seems to grow with each passing moment. Her love for ar t stems from her younger years from middle school to high school. She graduated from Maplewood High School in 1986. HildaWade was her high school art teacher from 9th thru 12th grade. She was a great influence on Barbara and a great supporter. Since then, Ar tist in Residence, Harold Lovell became a great mentor, teacher, and friend. He taught her to believe in herself, and that there was nothing that she could not achieve with a brush. The love for watercolors and what they can achieve have since become a passion. Her passion continues to grow everyday to push the boundaries of watercolor and to show people the only limits to this style of art are the limits that we put on ourselves. From the first stroke of the brush to the last stroke of color ; each painting is completely finished with a labor of love. Barbara and her husband Charles take each painting to their studio to finish. From matting, to glass cutting, to custom framing, each painting is finished to its finest. Our studio is called “Printers of Ar t” which includes everything from start to finish as well as printing Glicée prints of her work and for other artists. She looks forward to sharing with people her passion of watercolor to its finest detail.

Paul Parillo Once I become confident working with stained glass, I became curious how I could incorporate other objects and combine both to create unique art. I love the challenge of taking used, sometimes broken musical instruments and creating a new, revitalized piece of ar t.Whether abstract or a themed design, it is very satisfying to blend the two separate art forms to become one. To date, I have created pieces utilizing guitars, violins, banjos, drums, cellos, guitar amps and mandolins.

I’ve loved creating art all my life......painting with acrylics & watercolors are my favorite. I work full time but, I still find time to do the things I enjoy in my life…..which is most important. I use lots of bright vibrant colors in my paintings. They have been described as fresh, happy, energetic and soul lifting. I believe if a person surrounds their self with happy things their outlook on life will be just that… Happy! Therefore I look at my paintings as having a sort of healing energy! I make it a point to develop and practice skills in my work and to experiment with new techniques. I never sketch anything I paint; I use my brush and paints to create. All freestyle & truly from my hear t. I feel as an Ar tist there is no right or wrong way to create something that is pleasing to one’s eye. I absolutely love painting silhouettes on bright & bold backgrounds. I paint what I love, so you will see an assortment of many things. I encourage each parent to allow their child to be creative, to paint and to enjoy and experience ar t. “If one of my paintings gives you a smile, a laugh or makes you think of a wonderful memory, then I feel I’m already a success!”

Morris Self I have lived in Cheatham county for 26 years. I started doing sculptures for my family, and then their friends started commissioning sculptures from me.Then I star ted doing public ar t shows. My sculptures are made using recycled metal and scrap metals from our area to assemble sculptures of all different types. I have taught classes with children to motivate their art potential so they can experience taking items that are different and put them together in one common goal to make something other than its original purpose. I want people to see my ar t and realize their own potential to do something creative with simple every day items commonly thrown away. I have donated sculptures for fund raisers to local hospitals, schools, and charities, as well as, a 14’ breast Cancer ribbon sculpture located on Charlotte Avenue in Nashville at the Hope Lodge for cancer patients families.

Wolfe uses a classic black and white pallet and other elements to create a unity between organic shape, texture, and space with various elements produced by human design. She received her education in fine and digital arts from Austin Peay State University’s College of Ar t and Design. Wolfe’s primary focus across all of her pieces is to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. While her various works cover several mediums, Wolfe’s first love is charcoal and the tactile nature of manipulating the medium.

In much of the world today, an artist is considered to be a person with the talent and skills to conceptualize and make creative works. Such persons are singled out and prized for their artistic and original ideas.Their ar t works can take many forms and fit into numerous categories, such as architecture, ceramics, digital art, drawings, mixed media, paintings, photographs, prints, sculpture, and textiles. Of greater importance, ar tists are the individuals who have the desire and ability to envision, design, and fabricate the images, objects, and structures we all encounter, use, occupy, and enjoy every day of our lives.

Lundy Cupp Trial and error is an important part in any material I work with. My book carvings emerged from my love of books. I quickly discovered encyclopedias are ideal for my subject matter of human portraits. I can carve a life-size face within the space of a few volumes. And since encyclopedias are now primarily obsolete, they are abundant. There are homes and attics across America full of these beautiful books. So I just give them a new life so-to-speak. It is an incredible challenge to carve paper. I don’t glue the pages together before carving so much thought goes into the approximate 100 hours it takes to carve a por trait into the paper of books. I look at the world and the human face in a different way than I did before I discovered my abilities as an artist. I see the beauty in both simplicity and complexity. The learning and discovery process never ends.

Olga Alexeeva came from Moscow, Russia in 1991, being a professional actress, with no English speaking skills to communicate. She came to America, as a single mom with an 11 year old son and a dream in her heart. Olga’s work reflects her numerous European travels, as well as her philosophical meditation about the Universe encompassed in a drop of water. Her use of bold and intensive color reflects her active, playful and enduring nature, with a positive outlook and hope for tomorrow. The hardship of youth was transformed into a contemplation of life, which gives her a keen sense of humor and the ability to laugh at herself. She is now an inspired artist of the ”O” Gallery at Arcade Downtown Nashville and instructs numerous students by teaching artistic vision. www.OgalleryAr t.com / [email protected] Olga Alexeeva

I love walking on our farm, most of the time it’s right in front of me before I know it. Some of my favorite things are sunsets, crops in the field, smoky barns in the distance the list could go on and on….I’m definitely a farmers daughter and my work shows it. And then there’s another side of me that loves to travel. That’s in my blood too. My Mom was a international flight attendant. So lots of my photos are from my travels. Again whatever catches my eye. I’m also know to be driving and see something that I just can’t pass up and have to pull over. Hope you enjoy what you see.We all see through different lenses and that’s what makes the world go round. Cheers #foreversloane
