CLIPPINGS AND MUSINGS – NOVEMBER EDITION – HELEN DUVAL

Technology, performance, trends, culture and art influence many aspects of the glazing industry with design becoming more important than ever before, as sleek finishes that make bold statements are as important to end users as the performance of the product. Whether that is for contemporary new build or redeveloping a listed property to today’s standards, modern design is playing its part and it matters. Artist Greg Foley once made a bold comment that has relevance across many industries. “For the next generation of fashion talents, the question is how to create some-thing new when the Internet puts everything from the past at anyone’s disposal,” and he continued on to say that in “This moment, the fashion landscape is evolving to keep pace with social media. Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter or Snapchat are now the forces shaping our fashion consciousness.”

Commercial design too, faces new challenges and rewards, when it comes to making a statement and the speed at which that gathers momentum. Whether it is a striking engi-neering project, such as The Shard, that creates appreciative curiosity alongside gasps of admiration, or the redevelopment of a hotel chain that must accommodate the expecta-tions of modern travellers, design remains a fundamental aspect for the sector. It is ex-pected to be new and it is necessary to be dynamic in ways that have never before been seen. Architects and interior designers are challenged more and more, to create looks that ad-dress our modern desire to have something superb. Equally, there is a desire to create something new that offers a feeling of security and familiarity – if you like, a means to offer comfort. They must supply to the demands of longing for the best of the past whilst combining that with a craving to experience something vital and new in a fast-paced world.

Carrying on with a theme and in recognition of innovation, the Award season is about to get underway, and there is a great, familiar buzz across the glass and glazing sector regarding the NFA Awards for 2019. This year the event to celebrate the winners al-ready has keen interest and will once again be held at Doncaster Races. The good and the great of the industry will re-unite to celebrate innovation in industry technology, en-gineering and leadership in practical design. The NFA Awards recognize national achievement and industry projects across the whole sector, which also includes training initiatives, new companies, new products and outstanding achievement. This year the Lifetime Achievement Award has been launched and acknowledges consistent exemplary business accomplishments and/or achievements beyond regular job requirements that have shown a commitment to the sector. Discover more about what the winners have to say about the relevance of the NFAs for their business in this edition.

Online information is swift and technologically terrifying to some – a change that is too fast and hard to cope with when adapting it for established industries. For architects and designers it could be considered the same, however, it leaves so much at their dis- posal that can be drawn upon in terms of art forms and cultural elements, which all have bearing in modern building concepts and all are so readily available through social me-dia routes. Manufacturers have to keep pace. The next generation has never been without technolo-gy and they harness it in ways that we must learn. Theming, product innovation and performance dynamics are critical aspects that will ultimately influence investment and must be readily available on the internet to view– so, even if it’s retro 1950s design, the anniversary of the first double glazed unit from a storm window, acoustic glazing for a trendy workout space, the window Pantone colour chart for 2016, or a charitable cause that a product manufacturer or firm of architects is keen to support - it all has bearing for the sector and needs to be a part of the manufacturers online conversation today. Why? - because we must cater for tomorrow’s market.

NFA AWARDS GATHER MOMENTUM AS INDUSTRY RECOGNITION OF QUALITY

In any sector a business leader should want to win - particularly where awards are launched to give those in an industry a real voice. Recognition is also important. The NFA awards come with tangible benefits having been launched for the industry itself to recognise the merits and commitment of those who want to see it succeed as a professional model for recognition of quality. Nomination and voting is simple, but it has a very loud voice and does benchmark nominees with others in the sector. This gives people the opportunity to compare and contrast in a healthy way. Being nominated is as important as those in the winners circle - the industry has committed to support a company and the team behind it.

Having been launched for the industry by Lee Clarke and Jason Grafton-Holt in a bid to reinforce the strengths and quality of leaders in the sector, winning an NFA award provides credible endorsement for any business. Consequently, for customers, suppliers and potential investors this gives a viable stamp of approval from the whole industry. Just by nomination, this will help to boost relationships and working partnerships for a company and its customers. The exposure on success gains credibility and helps those who work alongside. It should always be remembered that awards are an excellent marketing tool that can be overlooked. Improved brand awareness comes from promotion about nominations - extended exposure to potential clients will open doors to new contacts.

frequently as important as the winning - it places a business alongside the leaders in the sector.

Winning that award, substantiates all the qualities for which the brand is recognised - the customers will be those supporting the nomination in the first place. New contacts will feel inspired to investigate options further. Staff morale and security is also boosted by nomination there is a great pride that ripples its way around a company when awards have been won. It gives everyone from production floor to the boardroom a real chance to celebrate a victory together. The NFAs will have been well deserved as the industry has voted, supported and recognised qualities they wish to acknowledge. On top of this, the NFAs bring a quality to the whole sector in terms of recognition for the next generation. These business awards can help to attract the best new talent as well as highly skilled people to a company that the industry has to offer - let’s face it, everyone wants to acknowledge a winning team and to be part of it. It raises the level of a business. The NFA Awards celebrate hard work and success which give companies excellent PR opportunities. The process of being nominated is

Lee Clarke comments, “The NFAs have been created for the industry. These recognise not just the success stories associated with change and developments, but also the voices across the industry who want and need to be heard. We listen to the sector and to what they want, as the industry looks for positive direction.” Jason Grafton-Holt concludes, “The Awards speak volumes about a company’s services and products, providing third party endorsement of achievements gained and services provided. Being shortlisted or wining an NFA award serves as testament to a company’s work ethic. Considering the benefits and the positive impact the awards can have on employees, the NFAs set a company apart from its competitors. They differentiate the quality of a company’s achievements from others, as acknowledged by the voices of the industry and bring a unique recognition that is richly deserved.”

15 KOLORFUL YEARS

One of the largest revolutions within UK fenestration in the past couple of decades has been the explosion in colour. At one point, it was White, Mahogany or Golden Oak wood grain as the range of colour. Whilst the range was small and easy to manage for installers and fabricators, the choice wasn’t exactly inspiring to home owners. So, those with the foresight and vision to understand the steps needed to be taken, we began to see the availability of colour enter the market. One of the early pioneers in this fledgling part of the market was Kolorseal.

Based in Dewsbury, ideally located centrally in the UK, Kolorseal began to offer to spraying of PVCu and aluminium profiles to installers and fabricators, allowing those companies to offer a much more expanded colour choice to their customers. It was the start of an industry-wide trend which has seen colour, and the demand for colour explode into life. The business has grown from strength to strength across those 15 years, which included the Great Recession, but has since expanded into the midlands with a base in West Bromwich, allowing the company to better serve demand for their services in other parts of the country.

To mark the occasion, the Kolorseal team celebrated 15 successful years with a day at the races

the course of the 2019 campaign, Kolorseal were voted champions in what was the biggest ever awards of it’s kind so far. Debbie Hendry, speaking on the win, said this: “We are delighted to be recognised for our services to the industry. I would like to thank all those who voted for us”. Kolorseal have also been a long term main sponsor of the awards, recognising the awards’ message of inclusivity, honesty and fairness, shining a light on areas of the industry that had previously gone unrewarded. To find out more about Kolorseal and the services they offer, please visit www.kolorseal.co.uk. You can follow them on Twitter: @Kolorseal, on Facebook: www.facebook.com/kolorseal, call on 01924 454856 or email [email protected].

The major rise in demand for colour can be in no doubt. You can see this with systems companies and fabricators choosing to carry more colour combinations in stock. However this presents a problem: storage and capacity. Its impossible for any one company to store and fabricate every colour option possible. You’d need a building comparable to NASA’s in Florida. Its simply not going to happen. However, if fabricators and indeed systems companies were to use the services of a company like Kolorseal, it would open the door to being able to provide not only every RAL combination possible, but also Farrow & Ball and BS colours too. It would mean fabricators would not have to worry about space in their factories, and would allow them to offer to installers and reliable bespoke colour offering at reasonable lead times. Debbie Hendry, Director of Kolorseal, spoke of the chance for fabricators being able to offer all colours: “Whilst the range of coloured foils available continues to grow, I believe this can cause it’s own problems, with the systems companies having increasing lead times and fabricators having to hold more stock which could impact cashfow and space. We offer a one week lead time in ANY colour.” With demand for colour only looking to increase over the years, and requests for more diversified colour options from home owners inevitably rising, companies such as Kolorseal are going to be at the forefront of delivering that service. As if celebrating 15 years in business wasn’t enough, Kolorseal end 2019 on a high after being voted Colour Specialists champions for the 2019 NFA campaign. The National Fenestration Awards is the industry’s largest, most inclusive awards platform. With over 350 nominations and 5565 votes submitted during AN AWARD-WINNING YEAR

It’s a privilege and a real honour to be awarded winner of the Aluminium Company category this year, especially with such strong companies in the finals, to emerge triumphant is a really great feeling. We believe Dutemann were voted winners because our customers value our quality and reliability, alongside the knowledgeable staff’s exceptional service. The recent results from our customer survey demonstrated that the company’s strategy of targeting the premium end of the market, instead of racing to the bottom on price, was working. It’s a mark for the whole team. There are a lot of people in our team who work very hard to deliver the best quality product, for the best price, on time with the best customer service experience possible. We’d like to dedicate this award to all our hardworking staff and our loyal customers. If it wasn’t for them supporting and voting for us, we wouldn’be the Champions of the Aluminium Category 2019!

DISTINCTION DOORS CROWNED NFA COMPOSITE DOOR MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR

Distinction Doors has been crowned Composite Door Manufacturer of the Year in the 2019 National Fenestration Awards, fighting off stiff competition in one of the most closely contested categories of this year’s NFAs, with a winning vote of 35.7%. The National Fenestration Awards, which were launched in 2013, are designed to reward the very best of the industry – voted for by the industry – in a celebration of stand-out companies who have risen the bar in their respective sectors. With composite doors continuing to be one of the success stories of the industry, creating one of the most competitive sectors as a result, Distinction has constantly evolved its facilities, products and service offering over the last 10 years. As a result, the company now supplies over 7,000 doors a week and offers a range of market leading services, including the very best in customer support, marketing advice, lead times and comprehensive prepped product

options. Distinction’s nxt-gen doors continue to go from strength to strength while the company’s in-house glass and glazing offering is also widely regarded as second to none. Distinction’s managing director, Gareth Williams, commented: “On behalf of the company we are absolutely thrilled to win the NFA Composite Door Manufacturer of the Year Award and would like to thank all of those who took the time to vote for us. To have such a large percentage of the industry acknowledge the effort that everyone at Distinction has made to make the company such an ongoing success, is hugely rewarding. I’m extremely proud of everyone here who has made this possible. “To be recognised in a sector as competitive as composite doors is hugely gratifying and will only serve to boost our ongoing efforts to improve and innovate for the future,” he concluded.

MORLEY CELEBRATES DOUBLE AWARD WIN It’s a double celebration for Morley Glass & Glazing this month as the business has been announced as the winner of two categories at the 2019 National Fenestration Awards. The business came out on top against two other companies to win the Integral Blinds Company category and was also revealed as the winner of the IGU Manufacturer award for the third consecutive year, this year sharing the accolade with Clayton Glass. The open platform NFAs are unique to the industry as winners are decided completely by the public. Organisers of the awards have revealed that 5565 individual votes were registered between September 4th and October 11th, the most ever recorded in their six-year history. Morley MD Ian Short comments: “We really feel as though every year gets better and better for our business, and 2019 has certainly been no exception. This year saw us hit a million metres of glass milestone with Saint-Gobain Glass, and we also had a fantastic outing as exhibitor at the FIT Show back in May. “Most recently, we were proud to report an annual growth in turnover of 22%, and we’ve achieved all this without ever having to compromise on offering our industry-leading lead-time of 10 days from 11am any Friday and while continuing to regularly manufacture over 2500 blinds every week!” As always, the business has also upheld its commitment to supporting a number of worthy causes through the community, including recently hosting The Rotary Club of Roundhay’s inaugural petanque tournament, which raised £2,513 for three local hospices.

All the winners in the 26 categories in the National Fenestration Awards will be invited to a special Winners Event held by the award organisers in the New Year.

evolving programme that brings emphasis to new areas of the industry with a broad range of categories. Today the NFAs bring an energy and passion to the glass and glazing sector, through the involvement of those in the industry themselves. There are clear cut advantages that are being created by both nomination and winning. The industry accolades open up the playing field and give everyone a chance to be rec-ognised. For each winner, these industry awards give additional credentials that demonstrates via industry validation in terms of expertise, service and skills. The NFAs are a distinctive honour that reflect the highest standards and commitment from across the glass and glazing sector.”

Brian McDonald, Sales Director, Kommerling - Systems Company Winner

“For many years Kommerling had been a sleeping giant - but those times have really changed.

We are now at the top of the game all round but particularly in terms of quality and performance.

There are some exciting developments happening for the company and this is partly due to the successes we have achieved this year. The NFA win reflects the standards of the company and being voted for by the industry itself makes this a very special accolade for this business. A very big thank you to eve-ryone for your votes.”
