Serving The Flexographic Printing Industry In Print and Online at www.nvpublications.com

Beauty Industry Drives Sustainable Packaging FF orum for the Future and The Sustainability Consortium (TSC), supported by contributions from major brands and retailers, have produced a draft assessment tool for evaluating the sustainability of beauty and personal care products, with the goal of simplifying and aligning the wide array of product assessment criteria in use today.

ABN AMRO To Acquire MPS

For exclusive content and breaking news please visit www.flexomarketnews.com MPS Group will be acquired by ABN AMRO Participaties (AAP), an in- dependently managed private equity business of ABNAMRO, from majority shareholder Braver Investments, Oost NL and the founders of MPS. CEO Wim van den Bosch, CFO Willem Huijink, as well as founders Bert van den Brink and Eric Hoendervangers, will remain with the business and in- vest alongside AAP. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed. Netherlands-based MPS provides narrow and mid-web printing solu- tions including flexographic, offset and f lexo-digital hybrid printing presses used in the label and flexi- ble packaging industries. MPS serves customers from mar- kets such as food & beverage, house- hold products and pharmaceuticals. Recently, MPS has selected Inter- world Cre as its sales partner in Philippines, as part of its efforts to expand its presence in Asia. Interworld Cre will supply MPS’ flexo, offset, and hybrid press solu- tions for label and packaging print- ers in Philippines.

Participating organizations included Sustainable Brands mem- bers CVS Health, Procter & Gamble, Target, Eastman Chemical Company, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. and Unilever, as well as other leading industry players such as Burt’s Bees, Col- gate, Method, Sephora, Seventh Generation,Walgreens and Wal- mart. Input was also provided by a number of other industry stakeholders such as the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF). Forum for the Future designed and facilitated the process, which began in 2014 with the Beauty and Personal Care Prod- uct Sustainability Summit, co-hosted by Target andWalmart. The Summit and subsequent work were in response to growing consumer and NGO demand for sustainable products, and the understanding that meeting this need would require key indus- try players coming together to find solutions.

Sustainable Beauty ( Cont’d from Page 1)

TSC has led the technical work and will now take on coordination, development, and implementation of the assessment tool. This will allow TSC to ensure alignment with their existing product sustainability assessment, measurement, and reporting tools that currently cover more than $200 billion in retail sales. This continued push toward more aligned assess- ment tools is an important step toward putting more sustainable products on retailers’ shelves. Rating Sustainability The assessment tool, currently known as the Beauty and Personal Care (BPC) Product Sustainability Rat- ing System, includes a set of key performance indica- tors (KPIs), along with a proposed method of scoring products against these indicators. A range of sustain- ability attributes and activities, from basic practice to aspirational leadership, are reflected within the KPIs. Retailers and other companies may voluntarily use this tool to independently and individually evaluate product sustainability, with scores intended to re- main confidential between retailer and supplier. Re- sulting product assessment may be used to facilitate supplier-retailer conversations, drive improvements in supply chains, and independently evaluate and in- centivize better, more sustainable products. SPICE Meanwhile, global beauty group L’Oréal and lead- ing environmental sustainability consulting firm Quantis have launched a new cosmetics industry ini- tiative called SPICE, the Sustainable Packaging Initia- tive for Cosmetics. The initiative aims to meet consumers’ growing expectations for environmental performance and shape the future of sustainable packaging by guiding policy development and dri- ving innovation. Companies face considerable methodological issues when it comes to measuring the environmental foot- print of their products. The results from product envi- ronmental footprints help companies make eco-design choices and to credibly communicate with consumers. SPICE was created to address these issues and provide solutions to these challenges in a collec- tive manner by many of the industry’s major actors. Working Together SPICE membership is open to cosmetics products manufacturers as well as cosmetics packaging suppli- ers. Currently, there are 11 members: Avon Products, Inc., Clar ins Group, Coty Inc., L’Occitane en Provence, L’Oréal, LVMH, Shiseido, Sisley, French
