PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP YOU POSTPONE SURGERY OR AVOID SURGERY ALTOGETHER

Whether you have an acute injury, a chronic condition, or balance problems, seeing a physical therapist at FYZICAL Therapy & Balance Centers can help you return to a more active and pain-free life. Give us a call today at: Bradenton-Central Clinic: (941) 749-1734 Ellenton Clinic: (941) 721-1854 was suffering from Spinal Stenosis when he took a harsh fall, fracturing his shoulder. Anti-inflammatory medications weren’t an option for him, due to an additional intestinal disease, and during his physical evaluation by a pain management specialist, it was found that he was also suffering from Degenerative Disc Disease. Due to all his health concerns, Roberto was apprehensive about receiving major surgery, so his pain management specialist referred him to Physical Therapy. Roberto still attends his physical therapy sessions twice a week, and he has reported radical improvement in his back and shoulder pain: “My Physical Therapist, who really listens and cares, has enabled me to avoid back surgery and to stop using pain medications. Instead of using medications, I have my mobility!” We’re here to help: At FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Centers we strive to make sure that every patient has a similar experience to that of Roberto’s. Our Physical Therapists are trained professionals who are driven and ambitious about helping their patients achieve the highest levels of comfort and success. Our goal is to help you avoid surgery and harmful drugs as much as possible. We do this by providing an extensive evaluation process to clearly diagnose the root of your problem, and basing a specialized treatment plan around that diagnosis. Every patient is different, so every plan should be different, too. Our physical therapists will be there with you every step of the way during your journey toward recovery, encouraging you and supporting every achievement you make. If you have a painful condition, don’t resort straight to surgery – come see us for a consultation first, and let us discuss how we can help you. Does the thought of undergoing surgerymake you feel queasy? Would you prefer to stay out of surgery in these uncertain times? If so, you’re not alone. Many people have a “fear of the knife,” so to speak. While no one wants to have surgery, it sometimes is a necessary part

of keeping you mobile and healthy. However, it doesn’t always have to be. If you feel as if you may be on the path to needing surgery, but you’d like to discuss alternative options, then don’t hesitate to give our team a call. How can I avoid surgery? There are numerous benefits to forgoing surgery and sticking with physical therapy. – Firstly, you’ll avoid the extensive recovery time that follows surgery, as many times, patients will need post-surgical rehabilitation. Secondly, you’ll save an incredible amount of money. Physical Therapy is far cheaper than surgery! Finally, and perhaps most importantly, Physical Therapy is not invasive. Physical Therapy doesn’t involve any risks of complications or need for painkillers. It’s not painful, it’s not dangerous, and it’s a natural remedy for your pain! Why go through both if one can do the trick? It has been proven that physical therapy can be just as effective, if not more so, than surgery. For some specific conditions, patients who received physical therapy alone were seen to have achieved the same results as those who received surgery in tandem with physical therapy. Some of these conditions are:

• Meniscal Tears • Rotator Cuff Tears • Osteoarthritis

• Spinal Stenosis • Degenerative Disc Disease • And More!

It is true that surgery is unavoidable in some patients if the condition is severe enough. However, there are several studies that prove physical therapy is successful in the treatment of pain to the point where, in many cases, surgery is unnecessary. A success story: The proof of the power of Physical Therapy shows itself daily in our clinics! One inspiring success story came from a 49-year-old man named Roberto. Roberto

WHY CONSIDER DRY NEEDLING FOR PAIN RELIEF

Florida now allows, along with more that 40 other States “Dry Needling”. Dry needling is a technique physical therapists use to treat myofascial pain. The technique uses a “dry” needle, one without medication or injection, inserted through the skin into areas of the muscle, known as trigger points. Some dry needling techniques treat a broader landscape of the central nervous system. This is called non-trigger point treatment. Instead of inserting needles only in the area of pain, the practitioner may instead insert needles in areas around but not directly on the point of pain. This technique relies on the idea that pain is the result of a greater nerve or muscular issue. Physical therapists use dry needling with the goal of releasing or de-activating trigger points to relieve pain and/or improve range of motion. Research supports that dry needling reduces pain andmuscle tension, and normalizes dysfunctions of themotor-end-plates, the sites at which nerve impulses are transmitted to muscles. This can help speed up the patient’s return to active rehabilitation. Dry needling may provide relief for muscular pain and stiffness. In addition, easing the trigger points may improve flexibility and increase range of motion. That’s why this method is often used to treat sports injuries, muscle pain, and even fibromyalgia pain. EXCITING NEWS!! The Florida Board of Physical Therapy finally approved the use of dry needling and it is effective law on July 1st 2020, for clinicians who have the proper credentials and experience. We are extremely fortunate to have Dr. Chris McGlaughlin in our clinic, whom is already certified in this treatment and has been performing this form of therapy in Ohio before moving to Florida and working at FYZICAL- Bradenton. We did a quick Q and A with him to learn some more: Chris what sparked you interest in “needling?” My first experience with needling was in 1990 when I witnessed relief to a fellow doctor with sciatica pain. This piqued my interest and four years later I met a clinician who had been living in China for 20 years practicing acupuncture. Then in 2012 when I was obtaining my manual therapy certification from The American Academy of Manipulative Therapy, a fellow classmate expressed excitement and enthusiasm about “dry needling” and highly suggested a school to receive training. I then knew I had to learn more and become proficient to be able to help my patients. What specific training have you participated in? I have been awarded a certification from the “Integrated Dry Needling Institute.” I had to complete and pass written, oral and practical coursework and exams. This also entails 54 hours of hands on, direct instructor to student interaction and training. How long have you been performing dry needling? I was able to performdry needling inOhio for 6 years and have treated close to 500 patients in that time frame. I am very excited for our patients that we are now allowed to perform this technique in Florida. What can you treat with dry needling? I have effectively treated nearly all the typical musculoskeletal complaints from headaches, neck pain, frozen shoulder, Low back pain, lower leg pain, plantar fasciitis pain. The list is nearly endless. 7 5 6 THERAPIST Q&A 2 6 5 8 1 7 3 3 7 6 2 9 http://1sudoku.com 6 7

The big question is…. Does it hurt? The short answer to this is yes, sometimes. BUT it is very brief and sometimes not at all. The needles are quite thin and flexible and it feels nothing like getting an injection or having blood drawn or an IV started. In fact, many patients have stated to me that I have finally found their pain, or the exact spot of their pain once the needles have been inserted. So, what is next? I have met all the qualification mandated by the Florida board and I am so excited to be able to help the community with this form of therapy as I have seen it to be a very effective ‘evidenced based’ treatment option. Reliable, valid studies continue to be published nearly every month regarding this technique. If you are interested in this treatment and think that it might help you, please reach out to me and/or join our live Facebook workshop on August 25th at 3 pm. 6 5 6 9 2 4 8 2 1 3 http://1sudoku.com
