ARE YOU IN VACATION MODE?

As we are amid summer, things havebeenhappeningatFyzicalEl Paso, both inourteam’spersonal and professional lives. I am so proud of all the advancements our team has made (and continues to make) in furthering their skillsets. One of our physical therapists, Joe Cole (AKA “Dr. Frankenstein”) had been studying to become a Certified Hand Therapist for 4 years, and he recently passed his certification on the first try! This is no small feat and we’re excited and proud of Joe for his hard work. Way to go Joe!

One thing I will say though – we did a lot of walking while we were inScotland!Weplayedgolf, 7-miles a day from what Mason toldme.Naturallywedidwalking toursthatwerealsoseveralmiles combined in addition to all the golf. I’m not used to walking, since it’s usually too hot to do so here at home – so I had to train beforehand. You may be wondering, “Train? For walking?” Yes! It is always important to train for upcoming physical activities that you are

not used to doing – even walking. So, if you are going on a vacation this summer that will demand more walking than you are used to, you should train, too! Here are some tips to increase strength in your hips, back, and glutes: • Walkouts. • Abbreviated/short lunges. • General bows to extensions – emphasize bending at the hips with leg weights and standing all the way up, while keeping your back straight. • Sit-to-stands – begin at a sitting position and stand all the way up. As you get better, try not to sit all the way back down. Alltheseexercisescanbedonefromthecomfortofyour own home, improving repetitions over time. Don’t let yourself be sore while you’re on vacation! These will help you prepare for your trip, so you can enjoy your vacation withoutpain–andasalways, ifyou’d likeextraassistance, don’t hesitate to stop by our practice.

Several of our team members have also passed their level 2 certifications for balance. Everyone is dedicated to improving themselves so they can provide awesome careforourpatients.Certificationsarehard–theyconsist of weekend courses, competency tests, studying, and exams. I am so proud of the ambition and willingness that isconsistentlydemonstratedbyourteam.Notevery physicaltherapistacceptsthischallenge– itshowspure dedication, desire, and drive. As for myself, I want to share that after many years, my family and I were finally able to go on a bucket-list trip of a lifetime. We traveled to Scotland on the first week of June, where I was able to spend time with my family and play golf with my Sons in the home of golf. It was a difficult test of golf, but it was worth every slice and pull. Life is so different there, simpler perhaps? While we were there, we visited historic sites like castles anddungeonsthatoffer insight intothousandsofyearsof historyandculture.Ihadbeendreamingofthisforso long and we built memories this June. We got to experience the epicenter of Scottish culture together.

Make the most of your vacation mode!

7 TIPS YOU CAN DO TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH

Physical therapy treatments can help improve your health, but they only work if you apply healthy lifestyle choices in your everyday life, as well. Some tips you can do on your own to become healthier, stronger, and more active include: 1. Taking care of aches and pains. Don’t let these long-term problems linger. Contact Fyzical for professional help. 2. Limiting your sitting. Get up every 30 minutes to walk around at work and home. 3. Getting out and moving. Exercise regularly, even if it’s just taking a short walk every day. 4. Maintaining a nutritious diet and controlling portion. Make sure your food intake is nutritious and portioned. By chewing your food thoroughly, you won’t feel as if you have to eat as much. 5. Drinking more water. Water keeps your body systems functioning at an optimum level. Drinking more water before/after a meal also makes you feel fuller for longer. 6. Breathing! Work on your deep breathing in order to increase your oxygen intake and get your lymphatic system moving. 7. Getting enough sleep. Sleep at least 8 hours a day. It is best to get into a routine where you are going to bed and waking up on a regular cycle. This helps your endocrine system.

Q&A WITH JOE COLE PT, DPT, CHT

“If you want to make a name for yourself, Fyzical Athletics is the way to go!” “When I first started at Fyzical Athletics, we started off with the Functional Movement Screening where I realized I was lacking in flexibility and balance. One of the pieces of equipment they have is the curve treadmill which really helped me with my endurance. When it comes to me competing in the hurdles, I was able to get over the hurdles faster than the other runners. They made me work harder so that when I was able to go out there and compete, I was lighter and quicker on my feet. I got attention from different Universities such as University of Miami, Louisiana. I also got attention from Ivy League schools such as Yale, Brown, Princeton, and also a military academies such as West Point, Navy Academy and Airforce. At the end, I made my final decision to go to The United States Military Academy. If you want to make a name for yourself, Fyzical Athletics is the way to go. Thank-you RXN for getting me to the top.” - Haley G.

What was the light bulb moment for you where you knew you wanted to become a certified hand specialist? During my first week as a licensed therapist I met a patient that had cut an extensor tendon with a chainsaw. The patient had a dynamic extension orthosis on that was made with metal outriggers and rubberbands toassist thefingers intoextension.Asanewgraduate in my first week of work this was something I had never seen and had very little knowledge about. After that my interest was sparked and I became really interested. What motivates you on a daily basis? My motivation every day is to become more experienced and to improve/ learn everyday. I take a lot of pride in my work and I want the best outcomes for every patient I meet. I want to provide each patient with the best possible care to help them return to all the activities that they enjoyed doing before... Having this goal for my patients helps to motivate me to improve everyday. What’s your favorite part of being a PT? Thehealthcareworld isalwaysevolvingandnew research isalways coming out on what is the most effective way to treat a person with a certain diagnosis. This keeps my job constantly changing and requires me to learn new information and new techniques. It keeps the job fun.
