FIGHT THE FALL IMPROVE YOUR BALANCE WITH PHYSICAL THERAPY
• Gently lift your hand up, but keep it close to the counter in case you need to grab it quickly. Try to hold this for 10 seconds (only do this if you feel safe or have someone nearby to help you). • Now try it with your eyes closed. • Do you wobble or lose your balance? This means your balance needs work.
When was the last time you had your balance checked? Nomatter what age you are, your balance can always be improved - in fact, even those who do not live with a balance or gait disorder can still suffer from balance-related injuries that occur from poor posture or reflexes.
However, if you frequently notice an imbalance, dizziness, or unsteadiness that makes you feel as if you may fall over at any given time, it is a sign that you may be living with a balance or gait disorder. Balance disorders, and balance issues in general, all stem from the vestibular system.

of fatal and nonfatal injuries. Most people don’t think about keeping their balance in shape until it is too late and they suffer a harsh fall. The good news is that most falls can easily be prevented, simply by the regular exercising of your balance system. If you have recently sustained a balance-related injury, it is important to seek the help of a physical therapist immediately, in order to avoid additional injuries in the future. It is important to note that you should also contact a physical therapist if you have any of the following symptoms: • Dizziness or vertigo (“spinning” sensations, even when remaining still).
The vestibular system is a delicate collection of fluid-filled chambers and sensory nerves located in the inner ear. Your vestibular systemhelps manage your “proprioception,” or sense of position, and when this is altered, it can be difficult to keep yourself steady. How can I tell if I need to improvemy balance? It can sometimes be difficult to determine if your balance is in need of improvement. The simple test belowmay be an indicator that you should seek physical therapy intervention: • Stand barefoot next to a counter, sink, or chair with your hand gently grasping the counter surface. • Put one foot directly in front of the other, so that one heel is touching the opposite toes.
• Inability to focus or remain alert. • Double vision or tunnel vision.
• Nausea or vomiting. • Arm or leg weakness. • Abnormal eye movements. • Difficulty standing up from a seated position or standing for prolonged periods of time.

Stand with the fingertips of one, or both, hands resting on a wall. Place the feet ‘heel to toe’ with the left foot forward. Steady yourself in this position. Step forward with the right foot, placing the heel directly in front of, and touching, the toes of the left foot. Step forward with the left foot, placing the heel directly in front of, and touching, the toes of the right foot. Repeat this sequence, moving forward down the hallway. Reverse direction, moving backward down the hallway. Repeat 5 times.

MINI FETA & POTATO FRITTATAS
INGREDIENTS • 2½ tsp coriander seeds • 2 tsp dried minced or sliced garlic • 2 tsp dried oregano •¾ tsp freshly grated nutmeg •½ tsp Aleppo pepper • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 medium yellow onion, chopped • 1 cup diced Yukon Gold potato •½ tsp kosher salt, divided • 1 medium zucchini, quartered lengthwise and cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices • 3 cups baby arugula • 8 large eggs •½ cup heavy cream •¾ cup crumbled feta cheese

DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Coat six 6-ounce ovenproof ramekins with cooking spray and place on a rimmed baking sheet. Finely grind coriander and garlic in a spice grinder or with a mortar and pestle. Transfer to a bowl and stir in oregano, nutmeg and Aleppo. Heat oil in a large cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion, potato, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon of the spice blend. Cook, stirring occasionally, until browned around the edges, about 7 minutes. Add zucchini, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon of the spice blend; cook, stirring often, until lightly browned but still firm, 5 to 6 minutes. Add arugula and stir until wilted, about 2 minutes. Meanwhile, whisk eggs in a large bowl until blended. Whisk in cream and the remaining spice blend. Divide the vegetable mixture and half of the feta among the prepared ramekins. Pour in the egg mixture and top with the remaining feta. Bake until the frittatas are just set in the center, about 25 minutes.
