HEALTH & WELLNESS FIGHT THE FALL
VERSE OF THE MONTH “ “ “And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” - 1 Peter 5:10
The vestibular system is a delicate collection of fluid-filled chambers and sensory nerves located in the inner ear. Your vestibular system helps manage your “proprioception,” or sense of position, and when this is altered, it can be difficult to keep yourself steady. If you have been noticing issues with your balance, contact FYZICAL today so we can help you figure out the root of your problem and treat it accordingly. How can I tell if I need to improve my balance? It can sometimes be difficult to determine if your balance is in need of improvement. The simple test below may be an indicator that you should seek physical therapy intervention: • Stand barefoot next to a counter, sink, or chair with your hand gently grasping the counter surface. • Put one foot directly in front of the other, so that one heel is touching the opposite toes. • Gently lift your hand up, but keep it close to the counter in case you need to grab it quickly. Try to hold this for 10 seconds (only do this if you feel safe or have someone nearby to help you). • Now try it with your eyes closed. • Do you wobble or lose your balance? This means your balance needs work. According to the Centers For Disease Control (CDC), over 2.5 million adults were treated for nonfatal injuries in emergency departments in 2013. In older adults, falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries. Most people don’t think about keeping their balance in shape until it is too late and they suffer a harsh fall. The good news is that most falls can easily be prevented, simply by the regular exercising of your balance system. If you have recently sustained a balance-related injury, it is important to
seek the help of a physical therapist immediately, in order to avoid additional injuries in the future. What’s causing my balance issues? There are several factors that can impact your balance. Just a few include: • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
• Meniere’s disease. • Vestibular neuritis. • Migraines. • Poor posture. • Injury or ailment. • Neurological issues, such as brain injuries, stroke, or Parkinson’s disease. When you arrive at FYZICAL, your physical therapist will walk you through a comprehensive exam in order to gauge the nature of your condition and figure out the best course of treatment for your needs. Whatever the case may be, all treatment plans will contain targeted balance exercises and stretches to help improve your vestibular system. Are you ready to get back on your feet and decrease your risk of sustaining a balance-related injury? Contact FYZICAL to schedule a consultation and get started today!

PATIENT SUCCESS SPOTLIGHT
“They just really do care about you getting better!” Our patient success story this week is from Janet Crawford. She began therapy as a last resort following a minor back surgery, where the next step would have been major back surgery. She didn’t believe in the power of Physical Therapy, but wait until you hear her story!
FIGHT THE FALL
“I had known about Southwest Georgia Rehab a long time ago becausemy daughter did her clinical with themback when she was in physical therapy assistant school. I have known them for a long time, but I’ve never been through therapy with them - not like I had this time. I had a minor back surgery last December, and if that didn’t work, we were going to have to do a major back surgery. My doctor tried everything after the surgery - blocks, shots, everything. My last hope was medicine - we added to it, tried to figure out how to get it to work, and it just wasn’t working. He finally said to me, “I don’t know anything else to do with you except surgery - or therapy.” I thought, “Therapy won’t fix this ,” but I decided to try therapy because I couldn’t bear going through a major back surgery. I was one of themost negative people in the whole wide world when it came to therapy, until Bridget and the rest of the staff at FYZICAL got a hold of me. My doctor sent me to FYZICAL. I could hardly stand up straight or walk. My initial progress was not as quick I would like and I was discouraged. Karen taught me important stretches and exercises. She asked Bridget to assess me and then everything changed! Bridget did dry needling and manual therapy - she worked and worked and worked, and finally - success! She went above and beyondwhat I think anyone else would have done tomake sure we were successful. I told Bridget I didn’t want my time with her to end because after every appointment, I would feel a little bit better. I am able to enjoy playing with my grandson and all the things I missed being able to do. Some weeks, I do silly things like dig up a tree, and I have to go back to her. She says, “At least you feel good enough to try!” Honestly, without her and the rest of the staff, I would have had to have surgery by now - and wouldn’t be half as good as I am now. They are wonderful, they listen to you and where you’re hurting, and they just really do care about you getting better. If people would just give it a try, it would change their mind totally about what therapy could do for them. I cannot say enough about the people at FYZICAL in Cordele. They’re my family. - Janet C.
When was the last time you had your balance checked? No matter what age you are, your balance can always be improved - in fact, even those who do not live with a balance or gait disorder can still suffer from balance-related injuries that occur from poor posture or reflexes. However, if you frequently notice an imbalance, dizziness, or unsteadiness that makes you feel as if you may fall over at any given time, it is a sign that you may be living with a balance or gait disorder. Balance disorders, and balance issues in general, all stem from the vestibular system. If you have been noticing issues with your balance, contact FYZICAL today so we can help you figure out the root of your problem and treat it accordingly.
