What a year 2020 has been… A lot has changed since we’ve been in your homes with our Fall 2019 issue of GPS Living. This year has been one that has forced families and households to re-evaluate their priorities. Whether that be out of necessity or just from a change of perspective. While daily life for many in New Jersey has returned to a greater sense of normalcy, we are in a new reality. Even with a return to the workplace for some, families are spending significantly more time at their homes. Over the last 3+ months, many have reconsidered or been forced to address how they use their spaces as the home has taken on a different function. With life altered, our homes are being examined through a new lens. Kitchens may be classrooms once again this coming fall and whether it’s replacing all of your cabinetry or just a dated faucet or pendant lighting, you will see inspiration on the pages to follow. This includes some of trends in the decorative plumbing and lighting categories, from black and gold (page 11) to wood and stone (page 15). Our pages will showcase new projects like the Kips Bay Palm Beach Showhouse and the ASPIRE Bernardsville Showhouse offering you a glimpse into designer spaces that can serve as inspiration for your home. Cleanliness and sanitization will be paramount going forward as the way we operate outside and inside the home has evolved. Our showroom consultants (highlighted on pages 29 and on the Kohler side, page 8) are adept at merging the form and function of your home as you move forward with the next iteration of home design. As an essential business, General Plumbing Supply has been operating to serve our customers since the beginning of the pandemic. With our doors re-opening in mid-May to customer traffic, we have been encouraging customers to make showroom appointments to ensure that customers can be accommodated at their desired time. Our doors are also open for walk-in traffic, as long as we have a consultant available at that time and we have not hit our capacity limit (due to COVID). We have a complete set of safety protocols for GPS employees and customers that provide a safe environment to work on your next kitchen or bath project. Here’s wishing for a safe and healthy remainder of 2020.

Let your troubles float away every day in the Juliet freestanding soaker tub from MTI .
Home Haven A BEAUTIFUL BATH IS AN ESCAPE FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD T E X T PAUL HAGEN A recent study suggest- ed average adults will spend about 416 days in the bathroom over the course of their lifetimes. That’s based on just under half an hour per person each day— 23 minutes for men, 29 minutes for women. To some, that may sound like a wild underestimation; to oth- ers, a blissful near-eternity. Either way, we figured: if we’re all destined to spend over a year of our lives there anyway, isn’t it about time we prioritized transforming bathrooms into our own personal porcelain paradises? Shouldn’t the place where we psych ourselves up for the day ahead be worth getting excited about? To this end, we gathered a selection of top-of-the-line pam- pering tools and all-around fabulous bath accoutrements—including an aromatherapy showerhead that’s as easy to use as popping a pod into a coffee maker. Consider them our bath prescription—guaranteed to turn your daily ablutions from obliga- tory to awesome.

An interconnected group of Asbury Park hotspots is offer ing guests an exper ience that is designed to surpr ise. Complex Motivations V isiting Asbury Park often feels like a return to happy memories of the past—the seaside where I played as a kid, boardwalks that have led the way to exciting live music, venues where I attended beautiful beach weddings. But thanks to the area’s spectacular growth over the past two decades, this shore destination also feels au courant—alive with new places to enjoy, espe- cially when it comes to dining. T E X T PAUL HAGEN
BELOW: Loteria tempts with marvelous Mexican—including tongue-tingling tacos and magnificent margaritas. OPPOSITE: Pizza pairs perfectly with the scintillating small plates of Capitoline.
Some time ago, while out for a walk after visit- ing friends’ new home in the area, we came upon an eatery that seemed to beckon us with huge front windows. Above the door was a stylized picture of a wolf that hearkened back to Roman myth. This was Capitoline. Our friends suggested we all dive into the Italian restaurant’s selection of shareable small plates, and we did—enjoying the breeze amidst unfussy design and high ceil- ings. “We try to cultivate a relaxed and unassum- ing vibe to help set everyone at ease as soon as they walk in,” explained Aiden Ardine on behalf of the restaurant. He says many other guests have also reported being drawn in by the windows’ siren call—whether en route from the beach, headed to a train, or out for a stroll. After our party had finished passing around delicious selections such as burrata with hot honey and hand-dredged calamari with cherry pepper aioli, we navigated our way to the “se- cret passage” that leads from Capitoline to Bond Street Bar—a casual spot with low lighting and an eclectic crowd. This would turn out to be anoth- er stop in a series of three interconnected bars and restaurants known as The Complex. Ardine explained its genesis: “Pat Fasano re-opened the original Bond Street Bar nearly ten years ago,” he says—noting that its craveable bar fare, reason- ably-priced drinks and relaxed atmosphere quick- ly attracted regulars. “With more people coming to Asbury to live and work, it was the perfect time to capitalize and expand the business.”

Colorful accents welcome walk-ins to Loteria.
Later, we ended up at the third (and most recently opened) jewel in The Complex’s crown: Loteria, which offers a tongue-tingling selection of Mexican fare and a truly sensa- tional variety of margaritas. “Loteria’s tacos are always a hit,” Ardine says. In addition to suggesting the chicken burritos and steak que- sadillas, Ardine recommends: “Don’t forget our corn esquites—a popular take on traditional Oaxaca street food.” The restaurant’s decor pays colorful tribute to both its cuisine’s mex- ican heritage and its seaside location—with succulents and nods to Dios De Los Muertos alongside the stylized mermaid that greets pa- trons from its sign and the pages of its menus. Though the three businesses have now been operating in concert for over four years, Ardine continues to get a kick out of seeing guests encounter each spot’s unique vibe as they move from one to the next. “It is still quite amusing to watch new customers as they wander about the space, confused and impressed.” And though The Complex provides a friendly welcome to those visiting, Ardine is quick to point out that it has “always been home to the city’s locals, catering to a unique crowd of punks, musicians, service industry workers, and artists.” And they’ve kept people coming back with a combination of depend- ably delicious dining and out-of-the-ordinary monthly events. “We have tried to capture a spirit of different but inclusive. We’ve got something for everyone, without getting too corporate or too generic.” For more information about how you can visit The Complex—including menus for Capitoline, Bond Street Bar and Loteria, visit them online at TheComplexAP.com.

a wide diverter for hands that have difficulty gripping regular pull up tub spout diverters, I was able to do so. What is your favorite type of project to work on? I enjoy bathroom renovations in existing homes or apartments as well as new construction. Both present the opportunity to offer products the homeowner may not have considered. Can you share something going on in the world of design right now that fascinates you? I’m loving satin brass and matte black trim. I also like using rows of robe hooks instead of towel bars, especially in kids bathrooms. Hooks are whimsical and practical at the same time. What’s your idea of an ultimate vacation getaway? Blue sky, powder days, and long steep ski runs in Colorado...
Who inspires you? I’m inspired by the great working relationship we enjoy in the Bergenfield showroom. We bounce ideas off of one another when necessary and someone always comes up with a great idea or solution. What has been a favorite design bathrooms and a tiny powder room. To save space in the powder room, a wall mounted toilet and wall mounted vanity provided more room than conventional ones. The bathroom is beautiful; the homeowner is thrilled. Can you share a solution that you found for a challenging design problem? In designing bathrooms for a homeowner with special needs, I was not only able to design bathrooms that are beautiful and functional, but also, when I was challenged to find a tub spout for one of the bathrooms with project you’ve worked on? What comes to mind first is an apartment renovation with two
KAREN LEVINSON BERGENFIELD
What is your personal design style? My style has changed over time— right now I enjoy the fluidity of contemporary design.
MEET THE DESIGNERS
What is your favorite type of project to work on? New construction and full renovation jobs. Your creativity is unlimited with a blank canvas. What’s going on in the design world now that fascinates you? I was really excited when Pantone announced that Classic Blue was color of the year. We needed to paint a wall in the showroom and got the idea of painting it blue from Pantone and it added such a classic look to the modern vanity on display. If you were a color, what color would you be? I would be all shades of blue. I just think blue is such a happy and sophisticated color: a soft, pastel hue for a more soft, whimsical look or a darker hue for an elegant look. I think it’s a great color all year round. After all, aren’t jeans worn all year round?
How would you describe your personal design style?
I love so many design styles; I feel my taste varies with time. Right now I am really loving luxe glam—love the airy feel, mixing patterns and textures with glitzy and classic pieces as well. Would you share someone who inspires you? I love watching design shows. Someone in particular is Hilary Farr from HGTV’s Love it or List It. I have been watching her for years. I love how she has different design styles, and tips for her clients. I get so excited when she uses products I sell. What has been a favorite design project you’ve worked on? One of my favorite projects was a master bathroom where the client and I had similar tastes and styles. I helped design her custom cabinetry for her double vanity and her make- up vanity. She was excited to explore a different finish for her fixtures. And we used a digital shower control that was Alexa compatible to avoid all the brass handles on the wall.

Gimme Storage
ELEGANT OPTIONS TO MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR KITCHEN AND BATH
Caesarstone’s Oxidian has an inky black base and veiled, rust-like surface pattern for a modern, unified look.
I n the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s 2020 Design Themes report, almost 800 participants were surveyed about design priorities. Respondents were unified in their view of storage: 88 percent were looking for cabinetry that organizes more in less space, 76 percent wanted targeted storage so they always knew where to find things, and 72 percent wanted function- al kitchen islands that could be both dining space and additional storage. One respondent said they were looking for “easy access storage,” because “more and more is being stored in the kitchen and there are more specialty products developed all the time which need a place to go.” Though this study was completed at the end of 2019 and released in January 2020, current world events mean that we are all spending more time at home, doing more cooking at home, and using our public and private spaces in very different ways. Chaos seems to be the order of the day outside, making the need for ordered, comfortable inside spaces more important than ever.

T E X T DEBORAH L. MARTIN I n the former parish house of St. Bernard’s Church in Bernards- ville, New Jersey, a revival is taking place. ASPIRE DESIGN & HOME, in partnership with NGC Development and Turpin Real Estate is converting the 100-year-old Gothic structure, and a new adjacent build- ing, into 20 new residences equipped for modern life, with an eye towards the historic architecture of the past. The Heritage at Claremont Show- house, which included the work of 12 nationally and regionally known de- signers, benefitted the Connie Dwyer Breast Cancer Foundation. The original Great Hall, which was designed by Henry Janeway Harden- bergh and erected in 1912, holds four of the residences, and the adjacent new building, which includes a facade of stone from the same quarry as the original, houses the remaining

16 units. Hardenbergh’s work includes The Dakota and the Plaza Hotel in New York City, and several buildings at both Princeton University and Rutgers University. The property has already received national attention both on social me- dia and from design magazines such as House Beautiful. Steve Mandel, CEO and Founder of ASPIRE DESIGN & HOME points out that Heritage at Claremont is the caliber of showhouse that is usually reserved for a major city, but the architectural importance of the original building made it a perfect choice for a designer showhouse. “Each design- er really brought their a-game to this project, and there is a surprise around every corner.” The diverse and talented slate of designers includes
Tina Ramchandani, Kathryn Platt, Sam Ciardi, Courtney McLeod, Samantha Gore, Jennifer Levy, Gail Davis, Sandy Cabelis, Anna Maria Manarino, Kelly Dunn, and Nancy Mikulich. Each designer created rooms that celebrate their own individual style, but as Mandel points out, the spaces also work together to surprise and delight. “This was an unusual project because when the designers started work- ing it was an active construction zone, but the developers really wanted to make this a truly collaborative process. As soon as we saw this plan, we knew we had to do it.” National and international brands such as GPS, Cosentino, Benjamin Moore, and Mediterranean Tile are found throughout the project, among many more.
MASTER BATH: Gail Davis designed the bedroom and master bath in one of the residences with touches of pink, inspired by the signature color of breast cancer research. Atrio widespread faucet with cross handles by Grohe , a Kohler Verdera mirror, Vertycle under mount sink, and San Souci toilet add elegance.

MEET THE DESIGNERS
Would you share something about the design process that inspires you? I like to take a project from the start to finish—to take something old and make it new again. What has been a favorite design project you’ve worked on? I had a customer who was remodeling her master bathroom in a Victorian home. She was not afraid of color and did not want it to look like the standard bathroom—which was a nice change. Can you share how you found a solution to a challenging design problem? I had a customer: all she wanted was a larger vanity in her new bath remodel. I was able to show her that if she took an area outside her bath she wasn’t using it would give her additional space to get what she wanted.
What is your favorite type of project to work on? Bathroom remodeling. People have their own design likes, so I get to work with both modern and traditional designs. They each have their own beautiful looks. Could you describe something going on in the design world now that fascinates you? I like that there are so many colors schemes, metal choices, and designs going on at the same time that are interchangeable. Where do you seek peace and tranquility in life? At the water—when I walk along the beach, it’s so relaxing to me. I forget about everything and feel so connected to nature. “They each have their own beautiful looks, so it’s nice to work with both styles.”
KATHY COX EATONTOWN
How would you summarize your personal design style? I would say mine is transitional. I like that you can mix either contemporary or traditional items with this design for an elegant, but comfortable environment.

PROVENCAL, A NEW COLLECTION FROM ANN SACKS, CELEBRATES THE BOLD COLORS OF THE SOUTH OF FRANCE. TOUJOURS LACOLEUR
T E X T DEBORAH L. MARTIN
M ADE by Ann Sacks is known for its beautiful, artisan-quality tile collections. True to the ethos of the Portland, Oregon brand, the collections are rich in heritage, traditional in craft, and modern in scope. Provencal, a new collection that reflects the clas- sic simplicity of form and the bold palette inspired by the famed South of France and Mediterranean relaxed lifestyles and brilliant hued landscapes. A ceramic tile of remarkable color depth, Provencal is currently available in Blanc, Créme, Metallique, Nuage, Rose, Blue, Gris, Herbes, Juane, La Mer, Marine, Orange, Petale and Rouge. Ann Sacks’ skilled artists apply time-honored techniques to create all the MADE designs from using local clay as its medium to the proprietary Ann Sacks glazes designed to pool and break over the surface.
The result is a tile that resonates with personality and character. Provencal has a straight edge detail allowing for a crisp grout line and a slightly textured surface evoking a timeless air and earthy presence. The collection offers a broad range of sizes that can be paired with any of the MADE by Ann Sacks moldings and trims, and comes in an equally impressive line-up of gloss and metallic glazes to personalize any project. Because it comes in standard sizes, it allows for short lead times to complete any project. Suitable for vertical interior applications, Proven- cal is not recommended for exterior use. It can also accommodate lighter, low-traffic floor applications, such as powder rooms and baths, as well as shower stalls, but it should not be submerged and could be become scuffed and scratched in higher traffic areas, due to its high gloss finish.

The Argile Capsule Collection
With a sculpted, undulating exterior, the freestanding bathtub and decorative vessel sink embody a handcrafted aesthetic that resembles wood cuts and tooled clay. kallista.com
CLAY TIME
A CAPSULE COLLECTION’S EXTERIOR REVEALS ITS MAKERS’ HANDS.
I t would take a thousand particles of clay to equal the width of a single grain of sand. And just as human ingenuity transformed sand into the glass that beckons light into our homes, clay became an essential ingredi- ent in crafting the vessels that have long brought life-giving water to our lives. So it seems apt that Argile (pronounced “ar-geel”) — a new capsule collection that possesses a handcrafted aesthetic often associated with that material — draws its name from the French word for clay. Argile satisfies both on a grand scale with its freestanding bathtub and more diminutively with its decorative vessel sink. The Argile Collection resulted from a collaboration between designer and dis- tributor Kallista and Workshop/APD, a New York-based design and architecture firm. Thus it follows that one can see aesthetics blending in the resulting pieces - simple, half-moon shapes in placid “Honed White” combined with a raised finish that creates a sense of movement as it cascades down their exteriors. “We wanted to create a modern basin and tub that weren’t cold, that felt hand- made and handcrafted,” said Matt Berman, founding principal with Workshop/APD. “There is nothing more beautiful than a design that reveals the hand of its maker. These pieces express that sentiment per- T E X T PAUL HAGEN

fectly with a textural gradient effect that goes from smooth, polished edges to a carved surface inspired by wood cuts and carved or tooled clay.” You can get a closer look at the Agile Collection at kallista.com and also learn more at workshopapd.com.

K ips Bay Show House Palm Beach enlisted nineteen of the nation’s best design- ers to transform the plantation-style home of reknowned antiques dealer and interior designer Lars Bolander in West Palm Beach. The property, known as Bamboo Hill, is replete with open air entries and terraces that connect the gloriously decorated interiors to the spectacularly landscaped grounds. “The location is unlike any other house we’ve showcased in previous years, offering a unique platform for the design firms to channel their talent and creativity,” says designer and Honorary Show House Chair Bunny Williams. Kohler has partnered with the Palm Beach Show House, now in its third year, since its inception. All proceeds from the show house benefit the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, the Boys & Girls Club of Palm Beach County, and the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club of New York.

The 8,751 square-foot estate is inspired by South African and Dutch architecture, and features Kohler products throughout. “Great design carries lasting impact, and this sponsorship is the perfect way to show how design impacts lives,” says Betsy Froelich, Kohler Marketing Manager. “It’s incredible to work with such impressive designers, who lend their time and talents to create beauti- ful spaces in support of the greater mission of providing opportunities for youth in these communities.” The home is comprised of five bathrooms, an expansive kitchen and an outdoor “sanctu- ary,” offering ample space for Kohler prod- ucts to stand out. Designers included Kohler throughout these seven spaces.

DESIGN WITH BITE POWDER ROOM: Javier Fernandez; Transitional Designs, Inc. Fernandez worked to bring the “wow” factor to a new level for this space and decided to layer finishes, fixtures and textures to achieve that design goal. The powder room (opposite and above), features the Components faucet in Kohler’s unique Ombré finish, transitioning from Vibrant Titanium to Rose Gold. The standout faucet is complemented by the flowing curves of the white Veil vessel sink, while the new Eir Intelligent toilet adds function and technology to the space.
“GREAT DESIGN CARRIES LASTING IMPACT, AND THIS SPONSORSHIP IS THE PERFECT WAY TO SHOW HOW DESIGN IMPACTS LIVES.” —Betsy Froelich, Kohler Marketing Manager
THE PALMETTO SNUG GUEST BATH: Joe Lucas; Lucas Studio, Inc. Lucas designed a chic, cozy sitting room, complete with a new fireplace, bar, and abstract wallpaper, which he has named the “The Palmetto Snug.” The multiple uses of Kohler’s Components collection, in the ever-popular matte black finish, create a bold consistency throughout the space, adding contrast to Joe’s coastal touches of pink and coral.
