By Lee Gutteridge and Dr. Kersey Lawrence CONSIDERING TREES IN ECOLOGY (PART 3)
In this series of articles, we have been exploring the trees in our area, and discussing some of the interactions that they have with other creatures in the bush. The next tree we will explore is the Purple-pod terminalia, Terminalia prunoides The name Terminalia refers to the terminal clusters of leaves, and prunoides refers to plum-colour, with reference to the ripe fruits. This common tree is also known commonly as the Lowveldcluster-leaf. This tree is well utilised by browsing game species in the region. I have observed nyala, kudu and impala utilising this tree species. The leafless, stripped branches at a high level are also an indicator of elephant and giraffe utilisation, both of which species favour this tree. It is very hard and heavy, with a weight of around 1120 kg per cubic metre, used by people in the construction of huts and the production of implement handles. It is also burned as fuel. The whitish, tightly clustered flowers are very strong smelling, and not entirely pleasant, and bloom from early September into February. In my opinion, it has an over-ripe cheese odour! The fruit is similar in some respects to the Combretum family, to which the Terminalia's are related (Family Combretaceae). It is a flat, purple, entirely-winged samara. It starts as a light green fruit around January, then ripens from February into pink and then purple colours, and begins to brown in August or September. These fruits are nibbled vigorously by African tree squirrels, which often leave discarded fruit-wings and damaged, gnawed seeds scattered below their preferred feeding places. The squirrels can be very focussed, almost ignoring even the close-rangeobserver whilst they are preoccupiedwith this activity. Brown-headed parrot, chacma baboon and vervet monkeys have also been recorded as eating this fruit.
Fruits of an intermediate age
Densely clustered flowers
The typical flower and buds can be seen
A dense cluster of ripe fruits
A gall on a branchlet (culprit unknown) which is particular to the T. prunoides, which results in the swelling of small branches as seen here
A brownish, older fruit
Another beautiful species, which is often overlooked, is the Bushveld paddle- pod, or Hippocratia longipetiolata. This will be the next species on our journey. This multi-stemmed climbing tree is common in much of the lowveld, but little-known. It grows as a creeper type plant, using other trees for support. It can kill its host or support tree by means of sunlight deprivation, as it can become really dense and totally cover its host. When young it is a scrambling, shrub-like plant, with many branches 'exploring' and reaching for support. It appears to 'sense' nearby trees, and sends exploratory branches to try gain support. The extremely long petiole separates this species from two other Hippocratia species in the Lowveld area (H. crenata and H. africana), as well as the absence of serration on the leaf as seen inHippocratia crenata. The single-winged seed is commonly seen lying on the ground in the bush. The three bladed, propeller like fruit hangs persistently, often late into winter if protected from browsing game, but, leaf-like, and positioned high in a tree, most of us simply don't notice their presence. The fruit is even absent up to the height of browsing giraffe by mid-winter. Once it dries, it cracks along a centre line of each 'blade'. There aremultiple seeds in each “blade” of the fruit. These plants are regularly browsed by nyala, kudu and giraffe. The leaves are greenwell intowinter, and only become brown if the stem is broken.

The tiny flower grows in open clusters (note the finger-tip for size scale)

adders only adopt this behaviour with amphibian prey items suggesting that puff adders can distinguish between different prey items and adopt the most appropriate predatory behaviour to increase their rate of successful capture.
Puff adders, Bitis arietans, are one of South Africa's most infamous snakes. Their name comes from their ability to, when threatened, puff themselves up to make themselves appear larger than they are all whilst loudly emitting a 'puff' sound. Puff adders are efficient ambush predators choosing to sit and wait for prey to feed. They are short stocky snakes that occur in a wide range of colours from sandy brown and grey to bright yellow and black. The puff adder is one of South Africa's most widely spread venomous snakes and can be found everywhere except true deserts and tropical forests. Puff adders can strike within a quarter of a second and have a cytotoxic venom that can cause severepain, swelling, blistering and inmany cases severe tissue damage.
Another recent study conducted by the University of the Witwatersrand showed that whilst puff adders are extremely difficult to find visually, they are virtually impossible to detect by scent. Indeed, the study revealed that puff adders are capable of chemical crypsis or chemical camouflage and animals such as elephants, dogs and meerkats cannot smell puff adders. It is believed that puff adders developed this strategy in order to avoid predation. Unlike most other South African snakes, puff adders do not generally seek refuge underground and rather stay on the surface under grass or other vegetation. In addition, their ambush strategy of acquiring preymeans these animals can lay motionless for weeks in a single location. This life strategy makes puff adders vulnerable to predation and therefore, in addition to their impressive camouflage display, chemical crypsis allows them to remain virtually undetectable. Puff adders are the first terrestrial vertebrate species for which chemical crypsis has been shown making these lightning-fast scentless wonders an evenmore incredible animal than previously believed.
Along with the Mozambique Spitting Cobra (Naja mossambica), the puff adder accounts for the majority of serious snake bites in South Africa every year. This is largely the result of the fact that puff adders have an excellent ability to camouflage and are unlikely to move despite disturbance. Indeed, research has shown that puff adders will allowother animals and even humans to accidently stand on them, usually without striking in order to avoid detection. This sit and wait strategy however increases their chances of negative interactions with humans as once found, these snakes very rarely move away allowing a person to interact with puff adders more than other snake species. Sadly, interaction usually takes the form of people attempting to catch or kill the snake-which often leads to unfortunate accidents. Recent studies on puff adders have resulted in new previously unknown discoveries about their behaviour, physiology and life strategies. For example, researchers showed that puff adders don't always just sit and wait for prey to pass them, they can actually perform behaviours that lure prey animals to them. Indeed, it was demonstrated that puff adders can use their tongues to lure prey, a behaviour called lingual luring. They also use their tails in a similar manner, a process called caudal luring. Whilst this behaviour is not new to science, the discovery was the first report of lingual luring in a terrestrial snake. In addition to this incredible finding, researchers showed that puff
Working with rocks by Admin Fieldworks
· Does it fit in?
Natural stone is among themost long lasting and beautiful additions to a landscape. It's also the most unpredictable. Drawings are only a suggestion. No matter how well your designer delineates boulders on the plan, the actual rock used may not resemble that shape at all. That's because every boulder is unique, which dictates their final selection and placement be done in the field. The real talent for fine rock work can only be done by a designer or contractor with a lot of field experience.
Try to maintain the same local look and feel with imported boulders in order to present amore cohesive design. It must blend inwith the surroundings.
· Keep it local
Rocks are incredibly heavy. Obviously, a local source will be far less expensive
· Keep it in scale
Where large boulders aren't possible use a multitude of modestly sized ones that can be arranged in a creativeway.
· Accessibility and placement
Make sure your contractor is highly experienced and well insured for this kind of large rockwork.
· Arrangement options
Boulders don't sit on top of the ground - they are planted into it. The stone's face should be positioned for high visibility.
· Planting and nesting
Due to the cost of obtaining stone for the landscape, it's vital that each piece is used to its maximum advantage. There are six factors that influence the visual appeal and practicality of using landscape boulders, and ways they integrate into the site. These will help you determine whether using boulders in the landscape is a cost- effective option for you, particularly if you live in a regionwhere rock is rare or absent altogether.
The way boulders and their helping stones are arranged can create ideal planting opportunities just as they occur in nature. Plants grow at the edges of boulders for protection from the elements and to access moisture sequestered beneath the stone in dry seasons. The goal is to plant the stone, so it appears to rise up from within the vegetation.
Boulder Shapes
Tall vertical - This stone is taller than it is wide. Used as central stone in a composition.
Low vertical- This stone is wider than it is tall. It is similar to tall vertical but ismuchwider relative to the height.
Arching - This oddly shaped stone overhangs on right or left. It is used to give strength and stability to vital points of the garden.
Flat - This easy to identify stone is less than a foot tall, but it may be unlimited in length and width. Above all it must have a flat top surface.
MOHOLOHOLO 2021 In this article we are going to talk all about how, when and what we feed our big predators.
Another huge benefit to feeding cages is that it eliminates any threat to birds of prey which may land inside of enclosures as they are attracted to leftover meat and carcasses from Predator feeds. Vultures are especially a big concern due to their endangered and critically endangered status. There have been studies that show many sanctuaries across South Africa have experienced their lions and other big cats killing or injuring wild birds that land in enclosures for this very reason. Containing the meat within the feeding cages removes the threat to these important birds.
We have a feeding schedule that somewhat mimics the feeding pattern of wild predators. Therefore, they do not eat every day. Depending on the species and how big their meal is, they are fed twice or three times a week. Of course, there are exceptions to this, for example 2 of our elderly cheetah eat small meals almost every day and one of our wild dogs struggles to pick upweight so she also eats 5 times aweek. All of the animals and birds in our care are monitored closely, therefore their diet will be altered according to any weight changes, medical issues etc. We pride ourselves in our animals maintaining a healthy condition and often receive recognition from vets for this; a lot of big cats especially, are often hugely overweight in sanctuaries and zoos all around theworld. All of our predators have learnt to be fed inside of feeding cages. These are smaller enclosed areas attached to the main camp of each Predator. There is a sanitised floor where the meat is placed and the animal is enclosed whilst they eat. During this time, in which they are enclosed, it is an opportunity to do health checks on each animal as we can get a close up look. We often examine them for injuries, ringworm, ticks and fleas etc. Each individual will usually eat in separate feeding cages whichmeans we know that each animal has or potentially has not eaten their full meal, if they don't finish, it usually indicates that they are getting toomuch food or theymay not bewell. Whilst they are safely enclosed in the feeding cage it allows us time to clean their enclosures; removing faeces and cleaning water as well as checking all the fences are secure.
