THE BEST BOOK I ’VE EVER READ For Greatness When I was younger, I used to fill my free time with books about any number of topics. To this day, the best book I’ve ever read was John Wooden’s “Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court.” For my readers who don’t know basketball, JohnWooden was the head basketball coach at the University of California, Los Angeles for almost 30 years. He was nicknamed the “Wizard of Westwood” because he won 10 NCAA championships over a 12-year period, including a record seven-win streak. For context, no other team has won more than four championships in a row. I read “Wooden” when I was 16 years old, after attending a college basketball camp. One of the coaches at the camp was Don Meyer, a very successful college basketball coach. I’d never heard of Coach Wooden or his book before, but Coach Meyer said everyone should read “Wooden,” so I did. That book really stuck with me. CoachWooden wrote several books over his lifetime, but “Wooden” is his best, in my opinion. The book covers lessons he learned over his long career, with advice I believe is applicable to anyone in any stage of their own lives. Even today, I find myself reflecting on some of the quotes.

I’m glad I was introduced to CoachWooden’s book at such a young age. They say we’re most like the five people we spend the most time with. This is why we should choose our friends carefully and why we should be careful about what we choose to consume. If we want to be successful in life, we have to surround ourselves with successful people. I was never going to have the opportunity to sit down with CoachWooden, but reading his book was the next best thing. I’ve modeled a lot of my own success through my deep reading and studying of successful individuals. WhenWooden came on as head coach, the basketball team at UCLA had little support and played in a cramped gym. By the time he retired, he’d transformed UCLA into a basketball powerhouse. When asked how he did it, CoachWooden replied, “I am just a common man who is true to his beliefs.” Even if you don’t play basketball or aren’t interested in basketball at all, I highly encourage everyone to read this book. It really is a reflection of a great man. “Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court” taught me to always strive for greatness.

“Failure is not fatal, but failure to change may be.”

“Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.”

“Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.”

“Talent is God given. Be humble. Fame is man-given. Be grateful. Conceit is self-given. Be careful.”

Of all the quotes in “Wooden,” the one I take most to heart is, “Make each day your masterpiece.” From the time I was a teenager, I have aimed to do just that. We only have one today, and one chance to make today worthwhile. By trying to make each day a masterpiece, I have been able to grow as a person almost every day of my life. I work hard, challenge myself, and look back at a life I am proud to have led.

With These Gratitude-Themed Games ENGAGE YOUR KIDS ON THANKSGIVING

person draw a random slip and read what it says without saying the name while everyone else tries to guess who wrote it. While Pictionary may get your kids talking about what they are thankful for, Guess Who? will tune them into what others around them are thankful for too. PICK-UP STICKS Like regular pick-up sticks, the goal is to remove a stick from a haphazard pile without disturbing the others. However, by using colored sticks that represent different kinds of thankfulness — such as places, people, or food — you can make players think outside the box. This will ensure you get a wide range of creative, thoughtful answers whenever the kids pick up a stick. Fibromyalgia consists of widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, and mood or memory issues. Around 5 million adults in the United States between the ages of 30 and 50 struggle with the pain of fibromyalgia. Even though women are more likely to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia than men, women with fibromyalgia often face challenges to have their pain taken seriously by doctors. Symptoms of fibromyalgia can begin after physical trauma, surgery, infection, or even significant psychological stress. Simple Ways to Stay Active

TOO BUSY TO WORK OUT?

5 S IMPLE WAYS TO STAY ACT IVE

Put a spin on date night. Forget dinner and a movie. Instead, try taking your date out for a round of miniature golf, indoor rock climbing, an evening stroll, a bike ride, or dancing. You’ll have more fun while doing your body good.

Being active doesn’t have to mean going to the gym every single day. An active lifestyle can be as simple as going for a walk around the neighborhood for a fewminutes a day. There are plenty of ways to exercise during daily activities like shopping, spending time with your kids, or hanging around the house. Park farther away. A lot of people will spend several minutes trying to find a parking space as close as they can to the entrance of a store. However, parking a little farther away will help you score a better parking space and make sure you get your steps in for the day. Do some yoga. You don’t have to push yourself to your absolute limit in order to stay active. There are other, gentler ways to exercise than running 5 miles a day. Tai chi or yoga are excellent low-impact alternatives to keep your body fit and healthy. Reduce TV time. It can be tempting to plop down in front of the television after a long day at work or after dinner, but you can also use this time to be active. Get the family together for a walk around the neighborhood, take a fewminutes to dance to some of your favorite tunes, or do some light cleaning around the house.

Grab a leash. Having a dog gives you plenty of

opportunities to stay active. If you don’t have a dog, try asking a neighbor or friend if they would like their dog walked, start a dog-walking service, or volunteer at a local animal shelter. There are plenty of ways to make staying active a part of your daily routine! With enough creativity and motivation, you can turn any activity into an active one.
