Making Movement Fun
Regular exercise is important to the physical and mental health of everyone, especially older adults. According to the National Institute on Aging, staying active can produce long-term health benefits such as improved strength and balance, increased energy, decreased chances for disease, and improved mood. Finding exercise routines you enjoy can help you stay motivated to remain active and healthy. Below are five tips to help make movement fun!
1. Shift your exercises outdoors. Find a trail to walk on, go on a bicycle ride, or locate a local swimming pool for a dip. Fresh air and vitamin D can help boost your mood and strengthen your body. 2. Join a class. Group exercise classes can help you stay engaged and motivated. They are a great way to experiment with different forms of movement while making new friends. 3. Exercise without realizing it. Activities such as gardening, walking the dog, or window shopping are a great way to enjoy mild exercise.
4. Try something new. Join a new class, discover a new trail to hike, or download a fitness app or video. Variation will help reduce the feeling of monotony in workouts. 5. Exercise with a
friend. Having an exercise partner is a great way to stay motivated. You can hold each other accountable and have fun getting active together.
Irvine Senior Services has a variety of fitness programs that will help you stay active while having fun. With everything from dance, walking groups, yoga, functional training, tai chi, and even boxing, there is something for everyone. Be sure to browse this issue of the Irvine Senior Connection to see what fitness activities are being offered this summer (see Page 12). For more information on any of these programs, visit yourirvine.org or contact 949-724-6900.
