COMMUNICATION IS KEY — AND IT’S HARD

HOW I’M BECOMING BETTER AT THE CRAFT

If there’s one thing I have learned through marriage and business ownership, it’s that I can be terrible at communication. That’s not easy to admit, but it is something I work hard to improve every chance I can get. And I’ve come to learn that my communication faults are not indicative of who I am as a person; in fact, the reason I can fall into bad communication habits can also be seen as an asset. See, I’m the type of person whose mind is moving 8 million miles a minute. I’m thinking ahead to the next step and the next one and the next one, and so on. And that can be a great skill for a business leader, where many of my decisions have to be careful, calculated, and thought out. But just because my mind moves that speed, that does not mean my mouth can translate it just as fast! My biggest issue is not sharing enough of what is going on in my head. While I may have moved on, the person I’m speaking with is still where we started. I am getting better at not doing that, but as I’ve grown as a business leader, spouse, and father, I’ve had to face the fact that my communication skills need all of my focus. On my journey to being a better communicator, I’ve found the secret is to over communicate. The only person who has ever told me I am repeating myself is my wife, and she only says it as a gentle reminder. But my coworkers and clients prefer repetition through over communication rather than a surprise, thanks to under communication. Luckily for me, I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to communication tools. I’m completely fascinated by the Pony Express, which began in April 1860. The Pony Express was a mail delivery service that crossed from Missouri to California on horseback. It had a short life — just 18 months, before the telegraph replaced it — but in that time, it was an efficient process that saw the likes of cowboys like Buffalo Bill Cody. It’s amazing what a little communication can inspire.

When I was younger, one of the coolest gifts I received was a shirt from my grandparents that said my name in the international maritime flag code. This is a system by which boats communicate their needs and situations via flags. It’s another interesting way humans communicate with each other, and I enjoyed wearing that shirt. The way we communicate with others in our everyday lives today is less complex than a series of flags or mail by horseback. But one thing has always been a reality: Communication is necessary. Think of the people you communicate with — even just in passing — as being in a boat with you. If you steer the boat one way, and they believe they should paddle the other way, your boat will turn in circles. But if you’re clear, provide direction, and communicate effectively, the boat will move in the right direction every time. That’s a lesson I try to keep in mind as I fine tune these “terrible” skills. This April, I encourage you to do the same. Let us know how you do. Good luck!

4 Ways to Harvest Positive Vibes in Spring Get Sprung

Have you ever noticed that springtime just feels lighter and brighter? That's because, believe it or not, the seasons affect us. When spring rolls around, the energy shifts, and it's up to us to maximize those positive vibes. Let's examine how we can make the most of spring and inject some color and vibrancy into our lives again after a long winter.

It’s safe to say many adults know how to do laundry, but some problems are best left to the pros. The following testimonial outlines one such scenario. “Unbelievable! I went to wear my light purple, favorite sport coat the other day and realized it

RELY ON COLOR.

Colors have the ability to elicit certain emotions and feelings. Tropical tones and pastels are everywhere in spring — the clear sky, grass, and flowers — so allow them to fill your space and take them with you as constant reminders to smile. If you’re up for it, wear some new colors to brighten up your wardrobe, and don’t forget to take in a sunset when you’re able!

had splatter stains all over the front. The last time I wore it was early summer, so it had sat with those stains on it for half a year.

“Totally bummed, I had Janet Davis Cleaners pick it up, and this time, I put instructions on their client portal bringing to their attention all the stains. One week later, the sport coat came back looking like I just bought it! I still can't believe it because what I didn't tell Janet Davis Cleaners is I had tried removing the stains myself and couldn't do it! I've been mad at myself for ruining my favorite sport coat, and we've all done it.

ENJOY MORE HOURS OF DAYLIGHT.

Spring brings more hours of sunlight and warming temperatures that can give you more time to enjoy your morning cup of coffee outside.

“To get it back looking like brand-new — unbelievable! In my book, they are the GOAT! (greatest of all time).”

You can take an early stroll around the block, get in a

workout outdoors, or just enjoy the fresh air. Also, many areas observe daylight saving time, which extends sunlight into the evening, so no matter how you choose to spend your extra daylight, make it an adventure.

We’re happy to have used our five generations of expertise and industry knowledge to help David, even after his valiant efforts to solve his stain issue. Yet David’s experience highlights a critical reminder we are always preaching to our clients: Trust the pros. Think of it this way. You know the basics of vehicle maintenance, like how to put in gasoline and change the washer fluid. But when it comes to fixing the transmission or changing a belt, most of us take our vehicle to a mechanical expert. If you don’t, you run the risk of damaging your vehicle or decreasing its longevity. Your clothes are the same way. Just as you shouldn’t replace your vehicle’s transmission without expert guidance, don’t tackle tough stains on your most-prized clothing, like sport coats, wedding gowns, and heirloom items, by yourself. Instead, trust a team of experts with the knowledge and tools designed to lift that stain without destroying the garment.

WELCOME SPRING-CLEANING.

It isn’t called spring-cleaning for nothing! Decluttering, dusting, reorganizing, and tidying up feels great! It’s empowering and refreshing. There is something special about creating more space in your living space that gets the positivity flowing.

EAT FRESH, COLORFUL FOODS.

During spring, many delicious fruits and vegetables come into season. Berries, oranges, apples, carrots, avocados, cherries, spinach, and kale are all at their peak. Your local farmers market is a great place to get the freshest produce to fuel your body! Spring is a time for new beginnings and positivity. Make the most of this spring season by welcoming a fresh abundance of love and life.

After all, we’re the GOAT.

If you know of someone who has a tricky stain they need removed, please direct them to our team at Janet Davis Cleaners. Don’t let them be a hero; your referral could save their favorite garment.

LET THE RAIN POUR Why You Don’t Have to Worry About Toxins

They say April showers bring May flowers, but some people believe April showers also bring pollutants that cling to our homes, cars, and clothing. But is this fear valid? Should you be worried about the toxins that come from rainwater? Or is this more conspiracy than fact?

exterior of your vehicle from water droplets. As with all clothing items, lay these out to dry after being in the rain to avoid mold or mildew buildup. When it comes to collecting rainwater, this gets a little trickier.

We’ve got your answers below.

IS RAINWATER SAFE?

When a cloud gets “too full,” it releases rain, which is pure. As the rain falls, it can collect toxins from the air. The amount can be relatively low depending on how toxic the air is where the rain falls. So, if you live away from factories or farms, the rain that falls from your parcel of sky is likely very pure. However, once rain hits something, it can collect whatever pollutants are on that item. So, if a droplet bounces off your roof, whatever may be on your roof is now in the rain droplet. All told, rainwater can be safe — so long as it doesn’t collect too much on the way down.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

recommends utilizing collected rainwater for irrigating gardens or washing outdoor items, rather than using it as drinking water. The toxin risk is too high for consumption in collected rainwater. And, if you do collect rainwater, it’s best to create a proper system that prevents contamination. Rainwater may be safe for your clothes, but mud is not. If you get caught in a sloppy rainstorm, trust the team at Janet Davis Cleaners to protect your clothing items. Call us to schedule a pickup or delivery!

HOW SHOULD I RESPOND?

The good news is that rainwater doesn’t have to be detrimental. For starters, a small amount of water will do very little to damage the exterior of your vehicle or your clothing. Most vehicle manufacturers recommend washing and waxing your vehicle regularly, sealing the
