HOW I’M BECOMING BETTER AT THE CRAFT

If there’s one thing I have learned through marriage and business ownership, it’s that I can be terrible at communication. That’s not easy to admit, but it is something I work hard to improve every chance I can get. And I’ve come to learn that my communication faults are not indicative of who I am as a person; in fact, the reason I can fall into bad communication habits can also be seen as an asset. See, I’m the type of person whose mind is moving 8 million miles a minute. I’m thinking ahead to the next step and the next one and the next one, and so on. And that can be a great skill for a business leader, where many of my decisions have to be careful, calculated, and thought out. But just because my mind moves that speed, that does not mean my mouth can translate it just as fast! My biggest issue is not sharing enough of what is going on in my head. While I may have moved on, the person I’m speaking with is still where we started. I am getting better at not doing that, but as I’ve grown as a business leader, spouse, and father, I’ve had to face the fact that my communication skills need all of my focus. On my journey to being a better communicator, I’ve found the secret is to over communicate. The only person who has ever told me I am repeating myself is my wife, and she only says it as a gentle reminder. But my coworkers and clients prefer repetition through over communication rather than a surprise, thanks to under communication. Luckily for me, I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to communication tools. I’m completely fascinated by the Pony Express, which began in April 1860. The Pony Express was a mail delivery service that crossed from Missouri to California on horseback. It had a short life — just 18 months, before the telegraph replaced it — but in that time, it was an efficient process that saw the likes of cowboys like Buffalo Bill Cody. It’s amazing what a little communication can inspire.

When I was younger, one of the coolest gifts I received was a shirt from my grandparents that said my name in the international maritime flag code. This is a system by which boats communicate their needs and situations via flags. It’s another interesting way humans communicate with each other, and I enjoyed wearing that shirt. The way we communicate with others in our everyday lives today is less complex than a series of flags or mail by horseback. But one thing has always been a reality: Communication is necessary. Think of the people you communicate with — even just in passing — as being in a boat with you. If you steer the boat one way, and they believe they should paddle the other way, your boat will turn in circles. But if you’re clear, provide direction, and communicate effectively, the boat will move in the right direction every time. That’s a lesson I try to keep in mind as I fine tune these “terrible” skills. This April, I encourage you to do the same. Let us know how you do. Good luck!

They say April showers bring May flowers, but some people believe April showers also bring pollutants that cling to our homes, cars, and clothing. But is this fear valid? Should you be worried about the toxins that come from rainwater? Or is this more conspiracy than fact?

When a cloud gets “too full,” it releases rain, which is pure. As the rain falls, it can collect toxins from the air. The amount can be relatively low depending on how toxic the air is where the rain falls. So, if you live away from factories or farms, the rain that falls from your parcel of sky is likely very pure. However, once rain hits something, it can collect whatever pollutants are on that item. So, if a droplet bounces off your roof, whatever may be on your roof is now in the rain droplet. All told, rainwater can be safe — so long as it doesn’t collect too much on the way down.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 9-inch uncooked pie crust • 1 cup heavy whipping cream • 1/4 cup powdered sugar • 2 8-oz bars of cream cheese, softened

• 1/2 cup light brown sugar • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup • 1 1/2 cups finely chopped pecans, divided

DIRECTIONS

1. Cook pie crust according to package instructions. 2. In a small bowl, combine heavy whipping cream and powdered sugar. Beat for several minutes with a hand mixer until stiff peaks form. 3. In a separate larger bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, brown sugar, and maple syrup. Beat together until combined and creamy. 4. Fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture and stir together until combined. Stir in 1 cup of chopped pecans. 5. With a spatula, spread mixture into the baked and cooled pie crust.

Sprinkle the remaining pecans on top of the pie. 6. Cover and refrigerate overnight before serving.
