OREGON, HERE WE COME! The Ulmers Hit the Road

“As I write this, I’m already looking forward to those seafood dinners, birthday cake, and long walks at the beach.”

Emilie, the kids, and I will soon be heading off on our trip to Oregon for the Fourth of July and her dad’s 80th birthday. Thanks so much for all of your Oregon Coast recommendations! You really came through for me after I put that call out in the last newsletter, and I have a lot of fun stuff planned for the trip. Before I dive into that, though, I thought you might want to know a bit about why Oregon is so special to Emilie. Yes, her dad lives there now, but the connection goes back even further than that. Both of Emilie’s parents are originally from Oregon. Her dad grew up in the little town of Cottage Grove (right outside of Eugene), and her mom’s family was from Medford. Both of them went to college in Oregon, too, but they eventually moved away. Even then, they took their three daughters back for vacations, and Emilie fell in love with the coast. When it was her turn for college, she followed in her dad’s footsteps and went to the University of Oregon. To this day, she’s one of the biggest Ducks fans out there! I’m dead serious. We bought the Pac-12 network just so she could watch the football games on the big screen. She doesn’t sit — she stands to watch the Ducks. That’s how high the tension ratchets! When they score, she high kicks and dances her way around the living room. Let’s just say it’s quite an ordeal to watch Emilie watch the Ducks, even when they’re winning. She already has her fingers crossed that Nathan will pick University of Oregon for college when he’s old enough. She really, really loves that school. Emilie also loves the Fourth of July, which is why this is the perfect time for us to take our first real Oregon vacation as a family. We get to celebrate her dad and the Fourth at the same time from our Airbnb right

on the beach, then drive up the coast with the boys and see all of the sights, like

the sea lion caves, the famous Haystack Rock off of Cannon Beach (apparently this rock was in “The Goonies” — Emilie can’t wait to show it to me), and of course, the ocean. We plan to eat plenty of seafood along the way, and I’m sure Zach will find something just as expensive as the lobster corn dog from Florida to try out. Both of our boys like seafood a lot, probably because when they were little, Emilie and I used to drop pieces of breaded fish and shrimp onto their plates and tell them it was chicken. I can still remember the face Nathan pulled the first time. “This is funny-tasting chicken!” he would say. “Don’t worry about it, just eat it,” we told him. He did, and he and Zach have both liked seafood ever since. Honestly, they’ll eat pretty much anything — and I definitely think those old white lies helped them avoid becoming picky eaters! As I write this, I’m already looking forward to those seafood dinners, birthday cake, and long walks at the beach. I’m also excited to see my father-in-law and wish him a happy 80th. Before Google was a thing, he’s the one Emilie and I turned to with all of our random questions because he is such an intelligent man and always had an answer! He started every response with “Well, the fact is …” before launching into a fascinating story. I’ll have to report back on all of the fun facts I learn on this trip!

See you soon,

–Mike Ulmer

EAT AWAY THE UV RAYS

3 Foods That Boost Skin Protection From the Sun

By now, most of us know how to protect our skin from the sun’s harmful rays. We apply sunscreen, wear hats and sunglasses, and opt for shaded spots to enjoy a picnic or a break. But what if we told you there was a way to do more, and it involved some really tasty food?

options with a trusted medical professional before taking them.

This is due to the natural anti- inflammatory properties in omega- 3s. The best source of this nutrient is in fish, like salmon, herring, or trout. Try searing these delicacies on the grill for your next barbecue. FLAVORFUL DRINKS Your morning routine just got better. Studies have found that coffee and green tea can have tremendous health benefits for your skin. One study found that drinking coffee may lower your risk of developing melanoma (a common form of skin cancer), while green tea contains polyphenols, which, much like the compounds found in fruit, can offer skin protection. Pour yourself a mug each day to reap a few benefits for your skin. As always, consult with a trusted medical professional if you have further questions or have concerns about your skin’s health.

COLORFUL FRUITS AND VEGGIES The colors that make fruits and

vegetables look so lively are the very compounds our skin

loves. Foods like tomatoes, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, kiwis, and oranges all contain carotenoids, which can have sun protection abilities. Likewise, grapes and berries have their own compounds that do something similar. To add these to your diet, include fruit with every meal, swap potatoes for sweet potatoes for the summer, or snack on some fresh tomatoes! FATTY FISH You have heard that omega-3s are great for your heart, but your skin loves this compound, too. Omega-3s can limit the impact of a sunburn, which can lessen the damage sunburns do to your skin.

The good news is that it’s true!

Many studies have found that antioxidants are the key to protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. While simply changing your diet won’t eliminate the need for sunscreen, you can boost the effectiveness of your sun protection habits by making a few simple swaps. Note: These benefits have only been found in the consumption of the actual food, not the consumption of the food’s nutrients in supplement form. Discuss your supplement

PATIENT TESTIMONIALS Getting Confidence Back

“I was given the choice of surgery or PT to rehabilitate my left shoulder and I chose Kinetic. Prior to coming here, I had torn the rotator cuff in my left shoulder rendering me with limited use of my left arm. I chose to come here to Kinetic since I had a previous experience in rehabbing an ankle after ankle replacement. Emilie was my therapist and I couldn’t praise her more for

“I was having trouble with standing and walking and even sleeping. Emilie helped me with balance and to strengthen muscles to help me get out of pain. She really knows what to do! I am doing much better now and recommend that you try Kinetic to help you get out of pain. You need to do your part and do your home exercise program!”

the very productive therapy she applied to my shoulder to strengthen it and get rid of the continual pain I had before. Thank you to Emilie, Mike, and staff at Kinetic.”

DON’T LET PICKLEBALL INJURIES GET YOU! 3 WAYS TO PREPARE FOR THE COURT

More than 400,000 people around the country play pickleball — and a heck of a lot of them live right here in Illinois. If you’re a “pickler” and plan to spend time on the court this summer, you could be putting yourself at risk of injury. Use these tips to stay safe and game ready. 1. STRETCH IT OUT. Yes, you should treat pickleball like your high school sports: Do a warmup! We recommend twisting your body side to side, stretching your arms overhead, bending at the waist, doing a few lunges, and taking a short jog around the court.

you don’t slide around on the court. If you play often, buy new shoes at least once a year. 3. PRIORITIZE RECOVERY. Your brain may want to play pickleball every single day, but your body probably doesn’t. Listen to your aching muscles and take time to recover between game days so you don’t overdo it. Pickleball can cause a lot of the same injuries as tennis, because you’re moving a lot on the court and swinging your racquet in repetitive motions in front of you, behind you, and over your head. Even if you follow all of the tips above, it’s possible you could still end up with injuries like …

• Muscle strain in your quads and hamstrings • Achilles tendinitis • Heel bruising • Pickleball elbow (similar to tennis elbow) The good news is that our PTs can treat all of these injuries and help you get back on the court more quickly. We can even take your warmup to the next level. If you’re really serious about pickleball, consider making an appointment with us before you’re injured to talk about the exercises we’d recommend to strengthen your muscles and joints. Not only will doing these exercises help prevent injuries, but they’ll also improve your pickleball game by boosting your strength, flexibility, and endurance!

2. PICK YOUR SHOES WISELY. If you wear flip-flops to play

pickleball, you’re basically asking for a sprained ankle. Always wear court shoes or tennis shoes to support your ankles and ensure

• Shoulder impingement syndrome • A sprained ankle
