Stratford Park Upgrades Facilities with an Iconic Shade Structure

Located just outside of Washington D.C. is Stratford Park in Arlington, Va. This 3.8-acre park recently received its first major update since it was established over 50 years ago. It was renovated to include a youth baseball and softball field, tennis courts, basketball court, and an all-purpose field. Updates also include walkways from the neighboring H.B. Woodlawn School, so children can have access to the fields. This park also provides plenty of parking and allows the community to reserve fields. Stratford Park was renovated in order to upgrade its aging facilities to current standards. Part of this renovation included adding a shade structure with a wow factor. Since Stratford Park is small and this is the facility’s only shade structure, it was important that the design of the shade add a signature and iconic element to their park. Landscape Architect Brian Cipriano with Gordon partnered with the President of Metro Recreation Michael Slifer and Superior Recreational Products to design, manufacture, and install a unique shade structure for Stratford Park. Arlington County requires all of their parks to have some kind of shade, either by a pavilion or shaded seating area. Having shade structures in outdoor spaces is ideal for protecting park- goers from the sun’s harmful UV rays, wind, rain, dust, and noise.

construction. This round shade features a modern, slim design with a unique architectural look.

“I think the design of this shade was intended to complement the baseball field because it’s an important part of this park,” Slifer said. The slim fabric disc is securely laced to a steel ring, which is supported by two curved columns that create a bold architectural statement. This shade is centrally-located within the park between the baseball field, basketball court, and park entrance. This shade structure covers a picnic area within a beautiful hardscaped space. Even though this is a small park, this shade provides a big impact.

“The park itself is small, so there wasn’t much room to create a big structure,” Slifer said.

Since the look of this shade is so unique, it creates an impressive focal point for locals and visitors. The beginning concept plan for the park renovations started in 2015 and was completed in 2018. The shade was installed in April before the park opened. Since the footers were poured by the contractor, installing the shade only took two days.

“[The shade] couldn’t have been easier to install. And that’s the real trick with shade,” Slifer said.

“They didn’t want just any kind of shade structure,” Slifer said.

The Halo Disc Shade was made a standard product, so other parks will be able to enjoy this iconic shade structure without delays in engineering. “I’m very pleased with this shade. I’ve never installed anything like this in my life! This is by far the coolest shade I’ve ever put up,” Slifer said.

For this park, the county hired a landscape architect and challenged him to design a shade unlike any other. Cipriano worked with Superior’s design and engineering department to make this unique shade a reality. Superior’s Halo Disc Shade met all of the requirements set forth. It combines eye-catching aesthetics with durable and long-lasting

entry road into the neighborhood and is a magnet to draw visitors into the park,” Miller said.

Each shade panel combines to create an overall large structure. It creates both shaded and open spaces that allows visitors to find a spot that’s most comfortable to them.

Juan Tabo Hills was a new park that was on a topographically-challenging site, so they chose five triangle sail shades to custom fit the space in the central plaza area.

The shade was an original concept created by Greg Miller of Morrow-Reardon-Wilkinson-Miller Architecture that was designed and engineered by Superior. This custom shade design was meant to represent the shutter of a camera when viewed from above and below. “We wanted to have a large area covered by the shade structure. The shade design provides comfort to park guests in both warm and cool seasons.

“The shade allows a lot of visitors a place to feel comfortable,” Miller said. “This allows the use of the park in the hot summer months. The central open part of the structure also allows sunlight to warm the space in winter months.”

President of PLAY! Gabriel Garcia successfully coordinated the design through multiple revisions to create a successful project.

“I am very pleased with the results and we have received great positive feedback from the City of Albuquerque parks staff and the architectural firm for the project,” Garcia said. “Both designers and sales consultants should embrace the opportunity to develop completely original designs that can make a project truly unique. In my experience, Superior has always been enthusiastic about assisting with new and challenging ideas for shade.”

As well as providing shade, the size and visual impact of this shade design provides a stunning visual focal point for the park.

“We knew we needed something large to balance the steep hill in the background. This structure is visible from the main

INDEPENDENCE PARK VIDEO

Independence Park Incorporates Inclusive Play to Unite Their Community Within the Park Renovation

After several decades of serving the community, Independence Park in Pearland, Texas needed to undergo renovations and update equipment. The goal for the play area was to make the playground accessible for children of all abilities and to incorporate a structure that can fit more children so that every child can utilize this playground structure and play together. This is when Talley Landscape Architects teamed together with Kraftsman Commercial Playgrounds and Waterparks to design and create this fully accessible recycled playground area at Independence Park. “The features that were important to incorporate into this design was wheelchair accessibility,” Kraftsman Design Manager Charles Jackson said. “You can access all the way up to the 96 inch deck to go down the highest slide that is on the structure.” An inclusive playground has components that all children can access and explore. This playground has an inclined bridge that leads to the top so that the entire structure is fully accessible. Therefore, interacting and exploring is not limited for any child that wants to be a part of this playground experience. Pearland is a suburb of Houston, Texas and has the highest amount of residents with disabilities than any other area in the state. That is another reason why making this renovated playground fully accessible was a must.

Another key feature that the city of Pearland had in mind was to make this structure a recycled playground. Kraftsman worked with manufacturer Superior Recreational Products to develop an inclusive recycled playground that has a child capacity of up to 200. The decks, posts, and barriers on the recycled play structure are made from 100% post-consumer plastic products. “We opted for the recycled playground structure in our design because we wanted to give more of a nature play feel to our park while maintaining the durability that the recycled structure offers,” Talley Landscape Architects Project Designer Elizabeth Pratt said. The goal was to create a fully accessible commercial playground that included natural themes and a large child capacity. This was successfully accomplished by including several natural looking components and inclusive play elements. “We have a play structure where a wheelchair can go all the way to the top, we have a sandbox where [someone who uses a] wheelchair can roll up to the front and play with the other children, and we have a swing set where people can transfer from their wheelchair onto the swings,” Pratt said. On the Fourth of July in 2019, Independence Park hosted their grand reopening of the newly renovated park for its 43rd birthday. The ribbon cutting ceremony put residents in high spirits and the renovation has been happily serving the community since.

“We are very pleased with how this playground turned out. All of the children love it and it is a great addition to the park,” said Pratt.
