HAVING COURAGE BY MY SIDE

MAKES ALL MY GOALS SEEM POSSIBLE

I never had any pets growing up. I was allergic to animal fur when I was younger, and even though I outgrew those allergies as I got older, I still didn’t really have an interest in getting a dog. My wife, however, really wanted a dog. So, of course, we got a dog. His name is Courage. We got him from a breeder down in Missouri called Patriot Pomskies, and all the puppies had very patriotic names. That’s why our dog’s name is Courage — he came with the name. As the name of the breeder suggests, Courage is a Pomsky (Pomeranian-husky mix), and he’s about 30 pounds. If you saw the way he carried himself though, you’d think he believed he was a lot bigger. Just like his name suggests, Courage is fearless. May 2–8 is National Pet Week, so what better time to talk about Courage the Dog? He’s the first dog I’ve ever had, and he’s basically my best friend. He loves playing tug of war with his rope chain toy, and eating scrambled eggs with cheese on Saturday mornings. Anytime I come home from work, whether it’s been a long day, a short day, or something in between, Courage is always excited to see me. His unabashed eagerness at my return home from work is a constant reminder to me to be kind to others. You never know what someone is going through, or what kind of day they’ve had, so you should always be kind.

Really though, the biggest lesson I’ve learned from Courage is in his name. When we first got him from the breeder, they told us that we would need to take Courage out and get him used to a variety of different environments. Huskies have a reputation for being kind of fearful in new places, but not our Courage. He’s as brave and bold as they come. In a lot of ways, I can only aspire to live like that. It takes a lot of courage to live life to the fullest, really chase after your dreams, stand up for what you believe in, and do what’s right even when everyone else is against you. It takes courage to develop a routine and stick with it, even when all your friends pressure you to abandon it in favor of wasting your productive hours. All in all, it takes courage to become the person that I want to be. Personal growth precedes professional growth. With courage comes success. There are days where I just don’t feel like being courageous, when I feel like just giving up on whatever it is I’m trying to accomplish that day, week, or month. Then, however, I go home, see Courage waiting excitedly for me at the door, and everything gets a little easier. My dog is more than just a good companion to me — although he definitely is one! No, Courage is more than that. He’s a reminder of how I want to live my life. When I have Courage by my side, nothing seems impossible.

2 THINGS YOU CAN DO

TO KEEP YOUR LAWSUIT FROM STRESSING YOU OUT

If you find yourself on either side of a lawsuit (and you’re not an attorney like me), it might be one of the most stressful situations of your life so far. However, as understandable as that stress is, believe me when I say you have no reason to worry. The main reason you should remain calm when you’re in the midst of a lawsuit is because the litigation process can take a long time — at least a year, or maybe longer. That means you’re going to be waiting a while for a verdict, and for your peace of mind. You can’t depend on that verdict to relieve your stress, because in the end, you’ll have let yourself be controlled by anxiety for several months. That’s just not healthy. That said, however, I believe there are two ways you can mitigate your stress, if not eliminate it, in the meantime. The first way is to understand the basic components of the litigation process . Typically, the litigation process will include the following steps:

The second way that you can mitigate your stress throughout the litigation process is by trusting your legal team . It might be your first lawsuit, but it’s certainly not ours. We know the process and the steps, and we’ve helped clients through them countless times. If you’re looking for representation in your real estate or estate planning case, give us a call at (740) 346-2899.

1.

Initial Strategy Phase (30–45 days)

2.

Litigation Phase (30–60 days)

3.

Discovery Phase (6–8 months)

4.

Dispositive Phase (3–4 months)

5.

Trial Prep and Trial Phase (90 days)

You also have 28 days to answer a lawsuit, 28 days to respond to discovery requests, and 14 days to respond to motions. All this is to say, you have time to get your case together. For a more comprehensive understanding of what each of these phases entails, feel free to contact us through our website at LittlejohnLawLLC.com.

THAI MINCED PORK SALAD

Inspired by EatingThaiFood.com

INGREDIENTS

• 5 tbsp uncooked Thai sticky rice • 1 lb ground pork • 1/2 tbsp chili flakes • 1/8 tsp sugar • 1/2 tbsp fish sauce • Juice of 1–2 limes, to taste

• 4 small shallots, thinly sliced • 4 green onions, thinly sliced • Cilantro leaves, to taste • Mint leaves, to taste

Edward and Kyzlee build a tower out of blocks.

DIRECTIONS

1. First, make toasted rice powder: In a frying pan over low heat, dry-roast the rice, stirring continuously until it turns golden brown and smells fragrant, about 15 minutes. 2. Let toasted rice cool, then grind into a coarse powder using a mortar and pestle, blender, or food processor. Set aside. 3. In a medium frying pan over medium-high heat, fry pork, breaking it into small pieces as you go, until fully cooked. 4. Remove from heat and add 1 heaping tbsp of toasted rice powder along with all other ingredients. Stir to combine. 5. Taste and adjust, adding more lime juice and herbs to suit your palate. Serve with rice.

TURN THE PAGE ON BORING BOOKS

TURN THE PAGE ON BORING BOOKS

It’s almost beach-read season! But any time is a great time to read when you’re immersed in a page-turner. While there is no shortage of books on the market — or ways to read them! — sometimes it’s hard to know how to find your next favorite novel or series. Here are three great ways to get a customized recommendation. 1. Use the web. Sometimes you’ve gotta go digital to go analog. There are several great websites that will provide recommendations for readers based on their past favorites. Email the staff of Literary Hub at BookRecs@LitHub. com a list of three books you love, and they’ll email you a personalized recommendation. Or you can check out NPR’s Book Concierge online, which lets you filter by the type of book (e.g., memoir, historical fiction, etc.) you’re looking for, as well as different categories (e.g., funny stuff, for sports lovers, etc.). WhichBook.net is similar

to the NPR Book Concierge but is even more user-friendly.

2. Ask the pros. The internet is great, but there’s no substitute for an old- fashioned conversation with a fellow word nerd. Librarians may be one of the world’s most underutilized resources. They are often prolific readers and also have a keen sense of what’s popular right now. If you’re not a patron at your local library, support a local bookstore and check out the staff recommendations or ask for help in finding a book in your favorite genre. 3. Join a book club. This is a great way to introduce new authors and subjects into your literary world. Book clubs are usually free to join and come with the added benefit of getting to socialize with fellow readers. Search online for a local or virtual book club or follow along with celebrity book

clubs online. If you like fun fiction, follow Reese Witherspoon’s book club, Hello Sunshine, on Instagram. com/hellosunshine. Oprah’s book club remains as popular as ever as well. Her monthly picks range from fiction that will entertain you while making you think to self-improvement books that could change your life. If you want to go deep on current issues and support authors of color, check out rapper Noname’s book club at NonameBooks. com. Noname also sends her monthly book picks to incarcerated individuals through the Prison Program.
