As we welcome in the Summer of 2022 , early statistics have not been in our favor , as we continue our work in hopes of ending drunk / drugged driving . In fact , the rate of fatalities involving a drunk / drugged driver have increased month over month – even during the unprecedent times of Covid - 19 when there were less cars on our roadways . In 2020 , we saw a 14 % increase in the number of fatal crashes and early statistics for 2021 are showing an additional 7 % above the 2020 numbers . The number of men , women , and children who have lost their lives , as a result , of someone making the wrong decision to drive impaired exceeded 11 , 500 which is the highest number in a decade . The New England States rank high in the Top 10 of states with the highest percentage of crashes involving alcohol / drugs in the country . Maine , Connecticut , and Rhode Island lead the group with the highest percentages – well above the national average of 28 %. Something must be done , and it must be done soon so that no more innocent lives are lost . MADD ’ s Educational Programs are available for schools , parents , youth , and community groups and are designed to help with questions you may have regarding the dangers of underage drinking , empowering youth to make the right decision and providing resources to parents to help prevent tragedies , and much more . Victim Services Advocates are available 365 days a year / 24 hours a day in person or by calling our 877 - MADD - HELP ( 877 - 623 - 3435 ). Please feel free to reach out to any one of the state offices if you need assistance in anyway . We are here to work together in hopes of creating a future of No More Victims . The statistics are horrifying . The danger is real – and it can wreak life - changing devastation anytime , anywhere , in the blink of an eye . The destruction ripples out , impacting two out of three people in their lifetime . Only together can we end this 100 % preventable crime of drinking and driving . MADD currently has staff available ( Connecticut , Massachusetts , Rhode Island ) with a plan to provide in person support in Maine , Vermont , and New Hampshire in the future . In honor of Police Appreciation week, the MADD CT team stopped by the East Haven and Branford Police Departments with baskets of goodies to say thank you for all they do to stop impaired drivers and investigate impaired driving crashes. Since we can't make it to every department, we also sent out thank you cards to each department state wide as a small token of appreciation. To all Law Enforcement officers in the state of Connecticut, please know how much we appreciate your efforts day in and day out. We can't wait for next year when we can visit a few more departments to show our gratitude.

In April , MADD Massachusetts awarded Amherst Police Department for their outstanding work in OUI enforcement as an agency . In Amherst , with many college students in the area and a prevalence of recreational use of alcohol / drugs , these crimes are incredibly important to the department , in order to keep the roads safe for all . In 2021 , officers of the Amherst Police Department charged 117 total defendants with OUI . Of these 117 ; 16 were for OUI Liquor 2nd offense ; four for OUI Liquor 3rd offense ; one for OUI - liquor 5th and lastly 21 were for OUI drugs . POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS AWARENESS

Reliving unwanted memories of the trauma , sometimes while asleep ; Avoiding reminders of the trauma , which can lead to isolation ; Negative changes in a person ’ s thoughts , emotions , or beliefs ; and Heightened feelings of anxiety , such as being easily startled , feeling hypervigilant , or having trouble concentrating . unpleasant emotions can linger for months , years , or decades . If you or someone you know has symptoms that last more than six months , or interfere with everyday life , you should seek professional help to determine if PTSD is present and to receive care if necessary . Common PTSD symptoms can include : The United States Senate designated June 27 as National PTSD Awareness Day and The National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder has designated June as PTSD Awareness Month . It can be normal for people to have upsetting memories , stress reactions , or trouble sleeping after traumatic events . We often hear of PTSD as a disorder that can occur after someone is in combat , but it can also occur after a natural disaster , a car accident , a sexual assault , or some other event that an individual experiences traumatically , such as the death of a loved one . Most people start to feel better after a few weeks or months . However , for some , upsetting memories , distressing thoughts , and
