NEW FRIENDS & A NEWMISSION Mywife Zoe and I just came back from a trip to Cozumel, Mexico. We have now been there 4 times over the last fewyears. We love to scuba dive there as the reefs and sea life are second to none. A week of rest and rejuvenation is so important for the both of us since we try to take care of so many people in our respective professions. We have to get our batteries recharged. to do some type of medical mission for years, but I really didn’t know any groups that had PTs doing as part of their team. So I guess everything happens for a reason andwe just sort of decided to create our own “mini mission.”

Theywere pretty excited about this opportunity and so Iworkedwith themon securing some time at a very small, quaint clinic on our recent trip. We had it set up for me to treat onMonday and Wednesday mornings but I eventually treated patients on that Friday morning too. I had such awonderful time helping these people. They are so gentle and were so appreciative of anything that I could do for them. And every one of them asked for exercises that I could recommend too! I know I helped all of thesewonderful people but I really feel like I got more out of the experience than they did. It felt really good to give back to others that don’t have access to this type of medical care. It was powerful. We are planning another trip down this winter and I can’t wait to treat more patients and check up on some of the ones I treated on our recent trip. TimBonack

On our first trip toCozumel,we had an interesting thing happen. Zoewas out diving one afternoon so I was hanging out in the pool of the resort. I like to practice my Spanish so I started talking with a local woman. She spoke some English and I speak some Spanish so between the two of us we could have a basic conversation. I found out that she is an attorney. Soon her husband, who is an accountant, joined us andwe just seemed to hit it off. Eventually Zoe came back from diving and she fit right in. We decided to meet Ricardo and Elena for dinner in town later that week. We had such a great time. We have kept in contact via e mail and we now get together with them every time we are in Cozumel. We have created a nice international friendship over time. They are getting married in September but unfortunately I will be at a conference. On our trip last year, I approached Ricardo and Elena about doing some volunteer work and asked if they thought therewould be any interest inme treating patients on Cozumel. I hadwanted

Tips to Help Alleviate & Prevent Shoulder Pain

Do you notice your shoulder is waking you up at night? Are you having difficulty reaching or lifting overhead? You might have a rotator cuff injury or another shoulder disorder. At Manual Edge Physiotherapy, our physical therapist can help figure out what is causing your symptoms and how to resolve them so you can use your arm and get a good night’s rest! The most common cause of shoulder pain is due to injury or dysfunction of the rotator cuff. The shoulder joint is formed where the upper arm bone (i.e., humerus) fits into the shoulder blade (i.e., scapula). It is known as a ball and socket joint. The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons surrounding the shoulder joint. The job of these muscles is to help move the arm and stabilize the ball in the socket. Shoulder pain occurs if the shoulder tendons are pinched by the bones of the shoulder resulting in the tendons becoming inflamed or damaged. At Manual Edge Physiotherapy, our physical therapist can help identify the cause of your shoulder pain and the steps needed to resolve it. lifting, and throwing. The complexity of movement requires the upper back (i.e., spine), shoulder blade (i.e., scapula), and the arm bone (i.e., humerus), and all the muscles and nerves work together to achieve the mobility and function we are accustomed to. If any part of the system is not working correctly, we become more susceptible to injury. Repetitive stress or trauma can damage the shoulder complex and lead to pain. The most common shoulder problems fall into the following categories:

• Tendon inflammation • Bursitis • Tendon tear (i.e., partial, complete, or degenerative) • Instability (i.e., partial or total dislocation) • Degeneration and/or arthritis • Fractures

Our therapists will guide the most effective treatments, including manual therapy, exercise recommendation, and injury prevention strategies.

THREAD THE NEEDLE

Our team at Manual Edge Physiotherapy physical therapy clinic will identify the underlying causes of your shoulder pain and develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs. We emphasize targeted stretches/mobility work strengthening exercises to help your recovery and prevent future problems. If you are looking to get started with some safe stretches that are used to help improve your shoulder function, try the following exercises:

Start on your hands and knees. Lift your right hand toward the ceiling with your palm facing away from your body. Next, lower your right arm under your chest and reach across your body to the left side with your palm facing up. Hold this position for 20-30 seconds and do 3-5 reps. Repeat on the opposite side. Strengthening your shoulder muscles (i.e., rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles) can also help support and stabilize your shoulder joint. Strength training can potentially decrease muscle imbalances and reduce the risk for shoulder injuries and shoulder pain.

ACROSS-THE-CHEST STRETCH

This exercise helps increase flexibility and range of motion in your shoulder joint and the surrounding muscles. Remember to stop if you feel increasing pain in your shoulder. Start by bringing your right arm up and across your chest with your hand gently resting on your left shoulder, or use your left hand to support your arm by the elbow. Use your left hand to gently press the right arm towards your chest until you feel a stretch in the right shoulder. Hold this position for 20-30 seconds and do 3-5 reps. Repeat on the opposite side.

CHEST EXPANSION / POSTURE CORRECTIONS

This exercise promotes mobility of the upper back and range of motion in your shoulders. Slouching places the shoulder in a vulnerable position and makes you more susceptible to injury and pain. While standing, hold a strap or towel behind your back with both hands. With control, move your shoulder blades toward each other while lifting your chest/breast bone. Finish by lifting your chin slightly to the ceiling.

SHOULDER & ROTATOR CUFF

THREE REASONS TO DIVE INTO SPRING CLEANING!

Spring cleaning is one of the best ways to help us to feel fresh and new. Cleaning benefits your physical health, but it’s also been shown to improve your emotional and mental wellbeing. After the last several months we’ve had, there’s no doubt we could all use a morale boost! Looking for three good reasons you should get your broom and rags ready to dive into spring cleaning? Keep reading! 1. Cleanliness is linked to happiness. Having a clean home can improve your mood and reduce your risk of depression. If you’ve been struggling to stay positive during this time, tidying up your home orworkspace may improve your mood. Regularly dusting surfaces and making sure your home is free of allergens can also help to improve your health as well, especially as pollen starts to show up outside! 2. Decluttering can help someone in need. We naturally accumulate a lot of stuff over the course of a year or so, from clothes and shoes to books, magazines, or kitchenware. At some point, you’ll look around and realize howmuch you have that you don’t even use orwear! Have you been looking for an excuse to help others who have been financially impacted by the pandemic? Many people require clothing and household items that you may have lying around. 3. Giving to others is an act that is associated with greater self-esteem, lower stress levels, and overall happiness. An essential part of successful spring cleaning is getting rid of things you don’t want or need any longer. If you haven’t worn or made use of an item in the past year, place it in a box for donation.
