Monthly LET’S CELEBRATE OCTOBER !

In case you haven’t heard, October is National Physical Therapy Month. It seems like there are a lot of these months, days, and weeks throughout the year that recognize various organizations and causes. The most notable for a lot of people is Breast Cancer Awareness Month that also happens to be in October. I really never gave it much thought, but as I reflected on it a month to celebrate our profession of Physical Therapy is a very cool thing. We as PTs get to do so much that impact the way people live on a daily basis. We have the opportunity to help people get out of pain and improve their ability to live their lives to their fullest potential. I got in to Physical Therapy because I was fascinated by the human body and this fascination continues to this day. When I first got interested in Physical Therapy, I wanted to help athletes get stronger and faster so they could compete at a high level. In PT school the thought of working with high level athletes seemed glamorous and exciting. As I startedmy career however I found myself getting bored with the recipe for their rehabilitation that I had to follow. It felt mind numbing to me and I knew that this path in my career had to change. As I developed in my career, I found Manual Therapy as a way of treating patients to get them out of pain and more functional. To this day that is what I, and all the PTs at our clinic, love to do. We treat regular people with problems and

pain issues that can often only be effectively treated with high endManual Therapy. All of us here at Manual Edge take great satisfaction in our patients’ healing and path to recovery. The best part of our job is definitely our patients. Our patients become friends. I have known some of my patients for over 25 years. In fact, several months ago I treated a patient that I first met in 1986. That is before some of our employees were even born! The thing that makes it all worth while are the relationships that we develop with our patients. Our patients keep us striving for better and better results as the degree of complexity of our patients sometimes increases over time. It is the “carrot” that keeps us striving for more. So, during National Physical Therapy in October, we would like to thank you and our profession for giving us the opportunity to help people liver better lives. We are very fortunate to have chosen this profession. I have always said that “9 times out of 10 I get a thank you when I am done treating a patient”. That makes all the difference. And remember, everyone’s an athlete! Tim Bonack

FINDING YOUR NECK PAIN RELIEF

Have you been experiencing discomfort and pain in your neck during the day when you’re running around, trying to keep up with your busy schedule? What about at night, when you’re in bed trying to get comfortable enough to fall asleep? You might be experiencing chronic headaches, weakness in your arms, or have a hard time sitting upright for long periods. Where is this pain coming from? Why is it so severe? And how are you going to get to the bottom of it? These are all questions that the skilled physical therapists at Manual Edge can help you to solve. You don’t have to continue searching the internet for quick fixes for

There are a large number of culprits that could be behind your experience of neck pain, including events such as a car accident or a slip-and-fall accident, as well as sporting injuries. The reason why neck pain frequently becomes so severe is that blood vessels have to pass through your neck to reach the head. A spasm in the neck muscles could lead to constricted blood circulation, and therefore migraine headaches. What’s worse, since the neck is connected to the spinal column and therefore connected to the nervous system, pain in the neck can quickly develop into tingling or numbness in the hands, arms, and fingers, which can be uncomfortable and frustrating when you are going about daily tasks. When neck pain develops as a result of a pinched nerve, the radiating neck pain can result in severe headaches, and in some cases, even migraine headaches. The pinched nerve can cause pain to radiate from the neck into the skull and can disrupt the typical nerve pattern. If you’re experiencing chronic pain in your neck, know that there are safer options than surgery and medication that are available to you to combat your discomfort! The answer lies at our clinic, with our physical therapy team. If you are interested in coming back to physical therapy, or have any questions about how direct access works, our physical therapists would be more than happy to meet with you for a consultation to discuss how they can help. What Is National Physical Therapy Month All About?

For almost 40 years, physical therapy has been celebrated by official proclamation. And since 1992, October is the month for honoring physical therapists and the important role they play in healing people in pain. In the modern era of social media, hashtags like #UsePhysicalTherapy and #ChoosePThave helped spread the word. Physical Therapy Month allows patients to share their stories about how PT has changed their lives for the better. It also gives physical therapists a forum for spreading the word about the different kinds of treatment patients can receive. Many members of the general public don’t realize that aside from specialized exercises that build strength and flexibility, PT also offers pain management through massage, heat and cold applications, and specialized electronic- pulse devices.

What Symptoms and Conditions Does PT Help?

Physical therapy tends to be associated with sports injuries, along with chronic problems such as back pain, surgery recovery, and balance issues. Yet, you may not realize the range of problems which physical therapy can help -- both for pain management and to help ease other symptoms. Do you have hand pain and stiffness? Physical therapists treat hand and wrist conditions ranging from carpal tunnel to “trigger finger.” Tennis elbow and rotator cuff injuries can also be aided through PT. Among other conditions the general public may not associate with physical therapy are pelvic floor dysfunction, TMJ, cardiopulmonary disease, Parkinson’s, and traumatic brain injuries. Does an official month really matter, given that physical therapists are out there making a difference every day? In many ways, yes! If you or a loved one has been on the fence about giving PT a chance, the many stories you’re likely to hear during this month of public awarenessmay help you to decide. If you have any questions about whether you should #UsePhysicalTherapy, call our office today to discuss your condition and to set up an evaluation.

Tim taught a Cranial Mobilization Class in September to a group of PTs that also included an Osteopathic Physician and a Dentist.

Kristina Koch DPT recently taught a class about Women’s and Men’s Pelvic Health to a group of third year medical students at the University of Colorado. Kristina has been instrumental in teaching physicians and PTs in Colorado about the importance of pelvic health for the last several years.
