The Marco Island Yacht Club held its 2 nd Annual “Hats and Horses” Kentucky Derby Day Celebration on Saturday May 6th. This year’s theme was “Run for the Roses” and participants enjoyed Derby Day Mint Juleps and hors d’oeuvres as they handicapped the race and made their bets. Prizes were awarded for the best hats. Following the race, everyone enjoyed an Old Kentucky Home dinner topped off with a slice of Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie.

A Special Thanks goes to Jillian Hamer and Daniel McElaney, as well as Nancy Traiser, Ellie Everitt and the Member Events Committee for for all their hard work on the event. They set the bar very high with this one!

MIYC Members celebrated Cinco de Mayo in fine style with Margaritas and a Piñata. Happy Hour was lively as usual. Then, Members enjoyed another fine meal prepared by Chef Bob and his Staff. It was also Frank Rinker's and Grace Pantano's Birthdays!

Beautification Help Beautify and Update our Club! - Burgee Bar Fund Raising Update We had a great response as Members rose to meet Chairman Dave’s “$30,000 Challenge.” As you recall, Dave Everitt pledged to match the first $30,000 donated for our Summer Renovation, and thanks to some very giving Members, we will be receiving all of the matching funds from our generous Chairman. But there is more to do and if you have not yet participated, we still need your support. Like any remodeling project, what first appears to be required soon expands into much more. For example, as we looked into restoration of our marble floors, we discovered that the stairs need to be replaced as well. So the need for donations continues. Only 10% of our entire membership has donated thus far. So I am calling on the rest of you to pitch in to help restore our Club. Let’s make it truly a team effort. Not everyone is in a position to donate in the thousands or in the hundreds. But if you could just do what makes sense for you—even if it is just $20 or $50, I’d love to see everyone get some skin in the game. When you donate, you can take pride when you see the beautiful improvements and upgrades next Fall, knowing that you were a part of making that happen! We are actively getting proposals and pricing for the upgrades and repairs, and will share more about specifics as the plans are agreed to. We have been listening to suggestions from Members, and of course your suggestion will carry more weight if you actually put something in the Fund to help make it happen! Your donation can take many forms. A simple check, a credit card or have an amount put on your club bill one time or each month. With the slower season coming, this would be an excellent time to add a monthly stipend to your bill and not even miss it. Here is a link to the Form that is needed for your donations. Summer is here and it’s getting quiet on the Island as well as at Marco Island Yacht Club, or so I’m getting reports. I’m home with family and friends like many of you and I realize how much I miss seeing each of you either at Happy Hour on Friday nights or at some of our great functions that are on the Calendar. In fact, I

continually working towards making MIYC the best place to be on the Island. Speaking of a great event, I’d like to bring to your attention something that you won’t want to miss. Our Boater’s Nights will be less formal but still very interesting. On Wednesday, June 7, our own Chairman of the Board, Dave Everitt, will be guest speaker updating you all on how we are doing at MIYC, what progress is being made during the summer and what’s in store for our short and long term goals. You won’t want to miss this very important evening and, of course, another wonderful dinner prepared by Chef Bob and his team. Watch for the eblasts with updated details on this program and please make your reservations early. I especially want to thank Vice Commodore Bob Winterhalter and Rear Commodore Jeff Comeaux as well as all who are filling in for me while I’m away. These guys are great to pick up the slack and I really appreciate having them on my team. miss you all a lot. Usually my summers are quite busy but since my only job is being Commodore, Wife and Mother, I’m finding out that I’m always thinking of MIYC. They are good thoughts and it is time to step back to see how we can make the rest of this year better than ever. There are still some good things happening at MIYC without us Snowbirds. The Bridge is in the process of planning some more boating activities for the Fall and we are engaging in some summer projects. At the top of the list is working with our new FCYC Representative Ray Rosenberg and the Marketing and Communications Committee to upgrade the boating section of our website to model best practices by other FCYC Clubs. Chairman’s Report

A second item noted in the House Rules describes the expected process our Members use to make advance reservations for meals, banquets, and parties. We have also added language to describe our ‘Pineapple’ table which helps to welcome new Members to the Club. And, as in past versions of the House Rules, we indicate the Club may charge ‘no show’ fees when reservations are made and not honored. We also indicate Members who cancel reservations within 48 hours of an RSVP Special Event may be charged for the event. The reason is that we incur significant costs to prepare and staff for meals, banquets and parties based on the number of individuals indicating they will participate. When we have late cancellations and ‘no shows’, we are not always able to sufficiently cover our costs. I have asked the Operations and HR Committee and the Staff to assure we are appropriately following this rule. That means for Special Events, when RSVP’s are required, the Members will be advised a ‘no show’ or ‘late cancellation’ will result in being billed the cost for the event. Likewise, I have asked that they also develop a ‘no show’ fee to be applied when reservations are not honored. The House Rules , as posted on our website, provide a number of other important points on how we expect the Club to operate and how we expect Members to conduct themselves when using the Club. I encourage you to take a look at the House Rules recently updated and posted on the MIYC website.

We have all heard of this situation: An individual has too much to drink at an establishment, leaves the premises and has an accident. “Dram shop laws” in most states (including Florida) hold the establishment strictly liable to anyone injured by the individual who had too much to drink; the argument being the establishment should have stopped serving the patron when it was obvious he or she had too much to drink. We have been fortunate to never have an incident where one of our Members or guests leaves the Club and has an accident that causes the Club to be held liable because we did not stop serving the Member or guest. Our new House Rules , posted on the ‘KEY DOCUMENT’ Section of the Member Central Site within the MIYC website clearly states the responsibility of the Club and our Staff: “Any Member or guest who, in the opinion of the management or staff, has had a sufficient quantity of alcoholic beverages shall be refused further service. A car service will be called to transport the member to the place of residence at the member’s expense.” I have spoken to our Staff, and indicated I expect them to adhere to the language in this paragraph. We cannot put the Club or one of our Members in the position of potentially having a life threatening accident because we did not act accordingly. Ahoy Members of MIYC! The uptick in reciprocal business here at the Club can mean only one thing- Summer has officially begun. I often spend time in these Anchorlines’ columns soliciting essential Member input. I believe that the very first step in successful facility management is reaching out to Membership and asking for their valuable opinions. I want your opinions on things like overall satisfaction with food and beverage, ideas for Club improvement and shared thoughts on new and exciting culinary ideas are equally high in importance when setting sail for our ultimate goal of a satisfying “Member Experience”. With that in mind, I want to remind everyone that as the summer sets in and we find ourselves with a little more time on our hands, it becomes the perfect time for my Staff and I to create special experiences for you and your guests. By now, most of you are well aware that it is my pleasure to prepare special items (food or drink) on any given day or evening. We want you to feel special and appreciated at your Club. Do you have a hankering for sweetbreads? Tuscany Stuffed Pork Chops? Baby Back Ribs? Or maybe you have a family recipe you would like to share with your family and friends one evening. Just let me know. It will be our culinary pleasure to accommodate. Just drop me a line via email or stop by your Clubhouse and let us know! Our May “International Wine and Dine Evening” on May 20th was a smashing success. Each Member was given a “wine and dine” passport and leisurely traveled around the Harbour Room sampling wines and cuisines from around the world. Not only that, but stops in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa found

Members enjoying meeting Staff members from our culinary team as well as sharing conversation with other Members, old and new. It was such a wonderful evening! Keep an eye on future e-blasts starting in Sep t embe r because we cannot wait to do this evening again somewhere in October.

Our new “Book Club” luncheon was also well received as several Members took part in reading “Hillbilly Elegy – A Memoir of a Family in Crisis”. Members came together to discuss the book and enjoy a luncheon based around the cuisine found throughout the story. An Appalachian Blackberry Moonshine Cocktail was served to start the discussion/ luncheon and everyone had a great time after that. Hmmmm. Blackberry Moonshine? Great Food? Great time? Sign me up for the new Book Club ASAP. Here at the Club we continue to find ways to enhance your Membership experience. We love sharing ideas and even bringing some of them to life. Thanks to everyone who contributes to this most worthwhile goal. Please remember to make your reservations early during the summer months. It really helps with staffing and restaurant planning. Member Bernie Sergesketter loves Trivia. He sent these for the Anchorlines. They are a lot of fun!

1... WHY Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left? BECAUSE When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since. 2 ... WHY? Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help? BECAUSE This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced, approximately, 'mayday.' 3 ... WHY? Why are zero scores in tennis called 'love'? BECAUSE In France , where tennis became popular, the round zero on the scoreboard looked like an egg and was called 'l'oeuf,' which is French for 'the egg.' When tennis was introduced in the US , Americans (naturally), mispronounced it 'love.' 4 ... WHY? Why do X's at the end of a letter signify kisses? BECAUSE In the Middle Ages, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often signed using an X. Kissing the X represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The X and the kiss eventually became synonymous. 5 ... WHY? Why is shifting responsibility to someone else called ‘passing the buck'? BECAUSE In card games, it was once customary to pass an item, called a buck, from player to player to indicate whose turn it was to deal. If a player did not wish to assume the responsibility of dealing, he would 'pass the buck' to the next player. 6 ... WHY? Why do people clink their glasses before drinking a toast? BECAUSE In earlier times it used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisoned drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was safe, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the host. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a guest trusted his host, he would only touch or clink the host's glass with his own. 7... WHY? Why are people in the public eye said to be 'in the limelight'? BECAUSE Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer 'in the limelight' was the Centre of attention. 8 ... WHY? Why is someone who is feeling great 'on cloud nine'? BECAUSE Types of clouds are numbered according to the altitudes they attain, with nine being the highest cloud. More Trivia - 9 ... WHY? In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from? BECAUSE

When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf.' He had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her. Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into caddie. 10 ... WHY? Why are many coin collection jar banks shaped like pigs? BECAUSE Long ago, dishes and cookware in Europe were made of dense orange clay called 'pygg'. When people saved coins in jars made of this clay, the jars became known as 'pygg banks.' When an English potter misunderstood the word, he made a container that resembled a pig. And it caught on. BIG CHEEKS Bet you don't know "Big cheeks" Big cheeks. A grandson of slaves, a boy was born in a poor neighborhood of New Orleans known as the "Back of Town." His father abandoned the family when the child was an infant. His mother became a prostitute and the boy and his sister had to live with their grandmother. Early in life he proved to be gifted for music and with three other kids he sang in the streets of New Orleans . His first gains were coins that were thrown to them. A Jewish family, Karnofsky, who had emigrated from Lithuania to the USA , had pity for the 7-year-old boy and brought him into their home. Initially giving 'work' in the house, to feed this hungry child. There he remained and slept in this Jewish family's home where, for the first time in his life, he was treated with kindness and tenderness. When he went to bed, Mrs. Karnovsky sang him a Russian lullaby that he would sing with her. Later, he learned to sing and play several Russian and Jewish songs. Over time, this boy became the adopted son of this family. The Karnofskys gave him money to buy his first musical instrument, as was the custom in the Jewish families. They sincerely admired his musical talent. Later, when he became a professional musician and composer, he used these Jewish melodies in compositions, such as St. James Infirmary and Go Down Moses. The little black boy grew up and wrote a book about this Jewish family who had adopted him in 1907. In memory of this family and until the end of his life, he wore a Star of David and said that in this family, he had learned "how to live real life and determination"

You might recognize his name. This little boy was called: Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. Louis Armstrong proudly spoke fluent Yiddish! And "Satchmo" is Yiddish for "Big Cheeks"!!! And I'll bet you did not know any of this.

Mariner’s Society

MIYC Board of Directors announces the Mariner Society. The Mariner Society was established for the enhancement of our Club experience through refurbishment and development of our Club’s facilities. A Board Committee has been established called the Mariner Development Fund to identify the specific projects or areas needing contributions from members. These projects will be on display for your perusal. Donations should be directed to support capital projects, ongoing maintenance, and/or general sustainability of the Marco Island Yacht Club. Donations can be made by check, credit card, or billing on your Club account. Forms are available to fill out to identify where you wish your contribution to be used. A recognition plaque identifying the program, levels of recognition and individual members’ names reflecting their accumulation of contributions will be on display in a public area of the clubhouse. If you are like me, you remember learning to play bridge in college and then there was the “social” bridge at night or on a lucky day when you could get time off from your busy schedule. Then came an even busier time in my life with work, so many kid’s activities, and bridge went by the wayside. Well, it is time to get back in the swing of it. If you play bridge, have ever played bridge, or even want to learn how to play bridge, MIYC is the place to do it. We have a very lively group of “social” bridge players. New Members are most welcome! There is no pressure to remember everything about the game and there are willing teachers to help you remember and learn. We play every Wednesday at noon if there are at least four of us available to play. Chef Bob serves us an amazing “surprise” lunch before we begin play. Marco Island Yacht Club Friday Golf Group Marco Island Yacht Club has a lot of members who enjoy getting out on the links. In recognition of this, we have a golf club within the yacht club! Every Friday morning a MIYC men’s golf group gets together at one of the local courses to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather and golf. This golfing opportunity has been going strong for many years, probably as long as MIYC has been a private, non-profit yacht club. In the winter and spring when we play at Hibiscus, the weekly participants swell to around 50 players on any given Friday. In the summer, when many in the group head north, some weeks we only have between 12 and 20 for play at The Glades. This weekly activity is open to all Members. For those of you who have no knowledge about our Friday golf, let me tell you that it is right for everyone of us who can still swing a golf club and bend down to pick up a golf ball! It is purely for the fun of being out

together and enjoying each other’s company on a beautiful 18 holes. Additionally, every 4 -6 weeks, we have a $5.00 tournament that usually has three flights. Everyone has a good chance to win. So, please, if you are looking for some friendly golf on a Friday morning, consider joining our group. I’d like to thank Captain Everitt and 1 st Mate Ellie for hosting May’s Pre-Sunset Cruise Dock Party. While the weather was “Iffy”, the company was Grand and Chef John’s creations were rewarded with a standing ovation. That was our last Sunset Cruise until October 25, 2017. Rear Commodore Comeaux will be hosting some Afternoon Cruises periodically thru the Summer. Peggy Frazier has accepted the Extended Cruise Captain position for next FY and the monthly list that was approved by the Bridge --at its last meeting --is posted in this Anchor Line. Most of the boats that come to Marco island Marina come to enjoy our island, but the last couple of weeks in May we became more of a safe haven for boats trying to go to Key West. This year the winds seem to have been much stronger and have lasted for a longer period.

As we all know, change is inevitable. Over the past few weeks we in the Southwest Florida Sailing Communities have been putting our heads together in plotting out the next few years of competitive sailing in our area. Ft. Myers has asked if they could possibly join with Naples and Marco Island with the hopes that each regatta would then be able to a t t r a c t mo r e r a c e r s . Center's summer youth sailing program provides great opportunity for Marco Island children. The first adult Wednesday evening small-boat sailing was a great success this Spring. We averaged about ten sailors each week. The program ran for six weeks (actually seven due to a weather cancellation) with participants asking for more. We coordinated this with the Sailing Center, Gulf Coast Sailing Club, and Sailing Association of Marco Island. We'll be talking about how we can perhaps expand the program next year. America's Cup 2017 By the time you read this, the 2017 America's Cup qualifying events will be underway in Bermuda. Qualifying and Challenge races will be May 27-June 12. Finals will be June 17-18 and June 24-27. Qualifying and challenge races will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Channel. Finals will be on NBC. Check your local listings for specific times. Nautical Trivia The expression "taking the wind out of one's sails" comes from sailing racing. It comes from the racing tactic of sailing in such a way as to steal the wind from another boat. It will be interesting to see if the tactic is used at all in the America's Cup races - - - especially with the new, space-age boats. Have a summer of smooth sailing! Winterhalter, we have been in discussions with the other sailing organizations and yacht clubs in planning for the future. There is general agreement that we need to include Ft. Myers. In doing this, we would most likely have to move the racing venue farther north - - - perhaps off of Bonita Beach. Thoughts are that all regattas would be run by the Gulf Coast Sailing Club with volunteer assistance from each of the sailing organizations. Having a common venue would enable a common set of Notices of Race and Sailing Instructions which would simplify regatta preparation. That's the thinking to this point. We're still in the talking stage. I'll keep you posted as things progress. We presented a $500 check to the Youth Sailing Program at the Marco Island Community Sailing Center. The money represented the proceeds of this season's two sailing regattas after all expenses. Thanks to the sailors, volunteers and contributors who made this gift possible. The Sailing Ahoy MIYC Members! Our Bridge Crew is hard at work planning the Extended Cruise schedule for the 2017-18 season (get your input in!). Vice Commodore Bob Winterhalter has posted the proposed Extended Cruise schedule in last month’s Anchor Lines. This season’s cruising/sailing schedule is from October 2017 through April 2018. Along with the Extended Cruise schedule I would like to hear ideas/input for the Day Cruise destinations. Our first Day Cruise of the season is likely to be at the Naples Sailing and Yacht Club in October. The traditional Day Cruise boundaries have been from Everglades City to North Naples and typically happen on a Tuesday (of course, exceptions to this are always entertained). It is important to note that some destinations will have a cancellation policy. We will make every effort to ensure you are aware of this policy at time of booking. I would like to add more kayak tours and beach parties to the cruising schedule for the season. This is highly Cruise Fleet

dependent on participation so I am very interested in hearing your thoughts on these events as soon as possible so we can get them on the calendar.

There is an ongoing effort to identify our fleet of participating vessels and captains.
