Marco Island Yacht Club

June/July 2018 Volume 18:6/7

Hats Off to a Great MIYC Kentucky Derby Party! The Marco Island Yacht Club held its 3rd Annual “Hats and

Horses” Kentucky Derby Day Celebration on Saturday May 5th. This year’s “Run for the Roses” participants enjoyed Derby Day Mint Juleps and hors d’oeuvres as they handicapped the race and cheered on their favorites during the race. Everyone wore their best Derby Attire and trophies were awarded by event sponsor Gillian Hamer. Following the race, everyone enjoyed an Old Kentucky Home dinner buffet topped off with a slice of Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie. If you missed the party, see your friends and enjoy the Derby experience vicariously! (Be sure to have sound turned on!) Link to Video

The Ready - Set - Wear It! The Ready, Set, Wear It Life Jacket Event to promote safe boating practices and life jacket wearing was held at Marco Island Yacht Club. Boaters throughout the country are participating. Thanks to the Marco Island Commanders Group for coordinating the event. The Civil Air Patrol flew overhead, the Fish and Wildlife Commission, and the Marco Island fire department and police boats participated.

Cinco de Mayo Celebration Was Muy Bueno! MIYC celebrated Cinco de Mayo on cuatro de Mayo (May 4th) since the Kentucky Derby fell on the 5th. Members made short order of a piñata (the second or third hitter felled it) and enjoyed yummy margaritas at a very festive Happy Hour!

Naples Yacht Club Welcomed MIYC at May Day Cruise It was a great day on the water for MIYC’s Day Cruise to the Naples Yacht Club for lunch. Besides enjoying a tasty meal, Members were treated to a very informative talk by the NYC Club manager, sharing info about their Clubhouse renovation and their membership.

Mother’s Day Brunch a Crowd Pleaser Nearly a hundred Members and their guests enjoyed Chef Bob’s delicious Mother’s Day spread!

Captain Ray Adds to Memorial Day Celebration MIYC celebrated Memorial Day early, this year and the beautiful Colors ceremony was capped my a moving recitation of “In Flanders Field” by Korean War veteran Ray Yerich.

Extended Cruises

Pete Frazier Power Fleet Captain

Join Us For the Extended Cruises Being Planned for the 2018-2019 Season!

All full Members are invited to join the fun and put new life and laughter into your time on the water! If you have not cruised an area before you will be able to learn from experienced cruisers and have a relaxing trip plus it is just more fun! Trip Captains organize the dinners and events and you can participate in part or all of the itinerary. Land Cruisers are invited to join us by car or ride on a boat to the destination where we arrange for hotel accommodations either at the marina or nearby. Some boaters with smaller boats also prefer to stay on shore. Signing up with the Extended Cruise team costs nothing and assures that you will be kept advised of plans as they are finalized. Plans are currently underway for a cruise up the West coast in May, a trip to the St. Charles Yacht Club in June, and a July 4th Legacy Harbor trip Captained by Ray Rosenberg. Please sign up to keep informed and let us know if you are interested in being a Cruise Captain: Questions or to Sign up: Pete and Peggy Frazier [email protected] 906 227 7625 Trips like this one epitomize what the MIYC is all about...great camaraderie, new friends, fabulous food, and the opportunity to share our love of boating....join the adventures! As we are working to plan our cruising schedule for next season we hope you will give us a click or call if there is a destination that you want to set sail for! We had such fun on our Staycation that it is being formally scheduled for December next year to allow everyone to experience an Extended Cruise close to home. We hope that the 50% of the Members who responded to the survey reporting that they have never participated in an Extended Cruise will join us for the Staycation. Also planned are trips to new places like Useppa and old favorites as well as cruises that combine Day and Extended Cruises. One request was that we plan a trip across Okeechobee and either to circumnavigate Florida or travel up the East Coast- let us know what floats your boat!.
