Shake, Rattle and stRoll Back to Marco! November 2018 Volume 18:11
Marco Island Yacht Club
" 2
Marco Island Yacht Club hosted their Welcome Back event on Saturday evening, October 27. Shake, Rattle and Stroll Back to Marco featured the era of the mid-1950s to mid-60s when American Bandstand was all the rage. A vintage red Cadillac convertible belonging to Members, Deb DeVries and Nizar Abuzeni, was parked at the entrance to the Club while Alice Jobe, Deb DeVries and Linda Marr sat in the oldster and waved in the crowds. Angela Holt, Chair of Member Events, welcomed the Members along with Commodore Robert Winterhalter, and set the stage with a black and white sign and list of top ten hits depicted the original Bandstand set. Dick Clark , played by Jon Holt, welcomed "The Kids" as they led the event with The Stroll. " Everyone was 15 years old that night, but only for that night", he said. There was a jitterbug or fast dance contest, as they called it at WFIL in Philadelphia. Winners were Dalia and Tom Krepelka, Alan and Linda Sandlin, Bob and Dale DeFeo. They danced to "The Hop". Next came a twist contest to Chubby Checkers big hit. Winners were Lauri Kalanges and Dean Heard and Kerry and Jim Heckenlaible. Prizes were given for the best hula hoopers, too. Winners were Lauri Kalanges and Alice Jobe. Member, Gillian Hamer donated 17 exquisite and ' delicious' prizes for dance contests, hula hoop, and best dressed. Members were adorned in costumes ranging from poodle skirts, to letter sweaters, Grease outfits and even a cheerleader. Best dressed were Laurie Harris, David Caruso, Karena DeWitt, Dale DeFeo, Alice Jobe, Deb DeVries and Nizar Abuzeni. An outstanding buffet was prepared by Chef Robert Aylwin, and the entertainer for the night was the fabulous Wendy Renee. Angela Holt - Chair, Member Events Committee

made the first two weeks of the month a portend of things to come. We will have a jam-packed season of events. The Chili Cook-off on Saturday, October 20 was a proud moment for MIYC at the Esplanade. Our booth was outstanding, but the pumpkin chili could not be outdone. Chef did his magic with carved pumpkins and gourds, and 20 Members showed up in support. The Welcome Back Party, a Signature Event called "Shake, Rattle and Stroll Back to Marco" was sooo much fun! Dick Clark, who was played by Jon Holt welcomed "The Kids" to dance and rate the songs. There were dance contests and skits. Best of all, everyone was '15 years old' that night ( and only that night). Winners were Lauri Kalanges and Dean Heard and Kerry and Jim Heckenlaible. Prizes were given for the best hula hoopers, too. Winners were Lauri Kalanges and Alice Jobe. A Very Special MIYC Evening Colors
Friday, November 9 th 5:30pm
Our wonderful server, Jimy Fernandez, earned his U.S. Citizenship two years ago and has been working hard since then to save up and do the piles of paperwork necessary to bring family here from Colombia. We are happy to report that his hard work has paid off and now his wife, Paula, and three year old daughter, Sarah, are here with him in Florida. Friday, November 9, is our monthly Colors flag
ceremony--and we thought that was a fitting occasion to celebrate Jimy's achievement and welcome his family to Marco Island! If you're here on the Island, you may want to bring a card for Jimy to commemorate the event. He has also experienced significant relocation costs, so you might want to include a small gift in your card. If you will not be here November 9, you may send your card to Pam Dorr, Marco Island Yacht Club, 1400 N. Collier Blvd., Marco Island, 34145, and Pam will hold them for presentation to Jimy on the 9th. Any checks should be made out directly to Jimy Fernandez . All of us at Marco Island Yacht Club are happy for Jimy and his family! Plan on staying for dinner. 239-394-0199

Happy to see so many Members returning to Marco Island as we prepare for a very busy season with some great events, special menus and lots of fun. Chef Bob and Pam continue to hire additional help to provide you with the best service possible. As I mentioned in my last article, we have completed a multitude of projects during the summer and will continue to work on finishing some outstanding tasks. Our current plan is to start working on the courtyard and landscaping in November. Zachary has finished the preparation for installing the isinglass on the second-floor lanai. Zachary and Maritza are working on prepping and painting the railings prior to the installation. Marco Canvas will be installing the isinglass during the next two months, just in time before our cooler weather starts. This means, we will be able to use the upstairs lanai during the winter months. All we need are some additional heaters. Zachary and Pam are also reorganizing and repainting her outer office in preparation for the new employee lockers. We ordered a new refrigerator and new server refrigerator for the downstairs kitchen. Both units were 18 years old and were not repairable. We also ordered a new freezer for the upstairs kitchen, so Chef could get his borrowed freezer back. Thank you, Chef for the use of your freezer during the past several months. The Operations and Human Resource Committee have made some significant progress in Human Resources this past fiscal year. Our permanent part-time employees received vacation, holiday and sick pay benefits this year for the first time. The new updated employee handbook was completed in June. The new exempt and non- exempt employee performance review forms were Operations &HR
created. Completed most of t h e e m p l o y e e j o b descriptions which should be finished by the end of this c a l e n d a r y e a r . K e y Management Bonus system was put in place. Wage scale was developed for all positions and for the first time our employees received an annual wage increase. The committee spend
Bob DeFeo Operations and HR
several months researching and interviewing local valet services to determine if we could reduce our cost and provide improved professional service. There were two companies that stood out among all the others. We presented our recommendation to the finance committee and the board. The Club hours of operation for November will be Thursday and Friday for lunch and Thursday, Friday, Saturday for dinner and Sunday brunch. Mark your calendar for our first Grand Sunday Brunch scheduled for November 18 th . November and December are normally the best times to sit outside and enjoy the scenery while having a great meal at the Club. Remember, when lunch or dinner is being served in the Dockside Lounge the Burgee Bar is always available for drinks or dining. The Burgee Bar will officially open in January, Wednesday through Saturday with extended hours and menu. Looking forward to another exciting and profitable year. See you at the Club, Robert J DeFeo Operations and HR Chairman Past Commodore

MIYC Fishing Club Next Meeting Thursday, November 15 th 11:30am
The MIYC Fishing Club met for lunch in the Burgee Bar on October 25 and shared fishing stories over the past year. Our last fishing trip was in Stuart, Florida where we fished the St. Lucie River for Snook, Tarpon and Jack Crevalles. Everyone caught fish and we had a great time. The MIYC Fishing Club has researched two international trips for 2019. In January 2019, we have an opportunity to travel to Guatemala and fish out of the Casa Vieja Lodge . Geoff Walker has fished their several times and boasts about great catches of monster Mahi Mahi, Tuna, Sailfish and Marlin. Google “Casa Vieja Lodge Guatemala” to see what the fishing is like…Fantastic!! Our second opportunity is at Langara Fishing Lodge in British Columbia . The best time to fish there is in early August for Chinook Salmon, Steelhead, Flounder and Halibut. Don Peart has been fishing at the lodge over the past 20 years. Men and women who travel to this elegant destination do so to fish and to take in some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. If you are interested in either trip, please contact me at [email protected] or call me at 847-951-3400.
Thanks, Jeff Comeaux - MIYC Vice Commodore [email protected]

KeyWest Extended Cruise Teaser MIYC’s Extended Cruise had a bumpy start. Bigger seas than expected. The trip normally takes about 5 hours. The Captains had to back way down and hug the coast. The waves calmed down in the Bay of Florida, but by then, the riders were pretty tired. Angela and Jon Holt took a bit of a nap! The trip took more like 7 hours, but they made it! Members are having fun in Key West as we go to press. Watch for photos in the December Anchor Lines.

MIYC Book Club Thursday, November 29 th Please join us for an entertaining book discussion and theme-based luncheon. October Book Club
The October Book Club meeting enjoyed a delicious Cambodian-themed lunch—the perfect pairing with October’s Book, The Rent Collector, a story about a poor family in Cambodia who found hope and redemption amidst life at the edge of a garbage dump. Members enjoyed a lively discussion about the book and what is important in life, as well as about women’s role in societies, and the transformational power of education. M.A. Harlacker gave the presentation, including many photos of the actual plight of Cambodia’s “garbage pickers” and the conditions in the dumps.
All Members are welcome at the Book Club luncheons. Even if you did not have a chance to read the book, you can learn a lot and enjoy intriguing conversation and observations about life. Men are welcome, too! The next meeting will be November 29. Reservations - 239-394-0199
Aqu a f i t a t MI YC Aquafit classes will resume at the MIMA pool October 3 at 10am on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy water aerobics - a low-impact activity that takes the pressure off your bones, joints and
muscles. Water also offers natural resistance, which can help strengthen your muscles and you can add resistance devices to burn more calories! Exercising in the pool provides the toning and cardiovascular benefits of exercise on dry land with less strain and stress plus it allows for a greater range of motion helping with flexibility and balance. And most importantly, it is enjoyable, fun! As with any other exercise routine, just be certain you get medical clearance from your health care provider before taking the plunge. As you read this month’s Anchor Lines, many of us will be partying in Key West on this season’s 1 st Extended Cruise led by Jim & Linda Marr & Pete & Peggy Frazer. Please see the full list of extended cruises in this month’s issue. I invite those of you with boats to participate in future cruises. You may want to invite crew members who can bed at area hotels. November is a busy month of the year at MIYC. The most important event is the Annual Meeting on November 13. This year, Member Event’s Chair Angela Holt has made it a must attend event; transitioning from a business meeting, to a happy hour, followed by dinner and “Dancing under the Stars.”
Bob For those of you who have been Members for 10+ years like Diana and me, the election of 2 Board of Directors has been a formality, as there were only 2 candidates. Often overlooked, was the confirmation of the incoming Rear Commodore replacing the Commodore on the Bridge. This year, Geoff Walker is the Bridge endorsed Safety & Training Officer, being promoted to Rear Commodore and replacing me on the Board of Directors. Finally, when Diana and I voted early today at Rose Hall and voted for city council, I noted only 5 candidates vying for 3 positions. At MIYC we have 6 candidates vying for 2 positions. I feel this is a very positive sign for the future of MIYC. I know the other 5 candidates very well, and there is no bad choice. I encourage you to attend the annual meeting, Listen to all 6 candidates state their platform, before voting. If you are unable to attend; review the candidate summaries, call other members for their input, pick two and mail in your ballot. Bob Winterhalter - Commodore

Chairman’s Report
Things are hopping at the Club. We have had some great events already, and if you have looked at the Calendar, there are many more to come! Make sure you get signed up! We are one month into our new Fiscal year. While you will hear a report at the Annual Membership Meeting on the 13 th , let me steal a little thunder. The Club finished the year in the black for 2018! That is, we ended up with a positive result for our Operational Income. And our budget forecast for 2019 indicates we have a really good chance to repeat this outcome in the coming year. There are lots of reasons why we have been able to do so. One is the attention to financial results in our Food & Beverage area. Operations and HR Chair Bob DeFeo, working closely with Chef Bob and Pam, have created a significant improvement in our fiscal discipline in this area. We closely monitor food costs, labor costs, and are charging a fair price for food. In addition, when we host outside groups, we now do so at a reasonable return. We still do not cover all our costs in food and beverage, but we are much closer to break even than ever. In other areas, we have committees looking to improve our cost of operation. The Building & Grounds Committee and the Operations and HR Committee have been very effective leveraging the capabilities of Zak, our Club’s on staff maintenance man. Other areas that have been reviewed include supplier contracts. We have found some areas to save money, such as the recently announced change to our Valet service. And the successful restructure of our Club debt, led by Bill Wallen, has helped consolidate our debt and develop a sustainable repayment plan. But, the biggest change has been in the area of membership. As you know, annual membership dues provide for the bulk of our operating costs, and help make up any shortfall on the food and beverage operations. Having a sufficient number of dues paying members is critical to our long-term financial health. We have been working hard to improve our membership levels over the past 3 years. And we
have a good degree of success. We always see some drop off in membership at the end of a fiscal year. And this year was no different. However, our starting point for 2019 is about 15 dues paying Members higher than we began 2018! And it
Dave Everitt Chairman
is about 30 dues paying members higher than we began 2017. The biggest change however is the Membership mix. We are starting with a much higher percentage of Full or Equity Members, increasing our dues revenue per member. It has been particularly exciting for the past month or so. For the past several weeks, new member inquiries – especially from places like HubSpot and individuals literally walking in the door – have keeping our membership crew busy. Since the first of October, including our ‘Early Bird’ members that signed up in the late spring for 2018 membership, we have added 15 dues paying members. This effectively offset the revenue loss from those who chose to resign. The common comments I get when I talk to new Members is that the Club is a ‘fun’ place where everybody is friendly and welcoming. If you have been reading my column or my emails, you will know this is a constant theme for me. People will join and participate in a Club where they feel welcome. It is the best brand image we could have for our Club! We are not where we would like to be yet. We still need more members to reach our overall goals for financial sustainability. However, we are making very good progress. Thank you to all the members who take the time and effort to make sure our new members feel welcome!

See Amazing Mini Reefs on Display at Happy Hour! Help Clean Our Canals
We all love our Island Paradise and the beautiful waters that we boat on. Doing what we can to keep our waters clean is a priority for MIYC. That’s why we are displaying Ocean Habitats’ “Mini Reefs” at Happy Hour this evening. We encourage Members to install one or two under your docks. We have installed three under our MIYC docks (with a thank you to Rich Granville) and Chef Bob says he has observed the increase in fish they have drawn.
Each reef establishes an ecosystem of aquatic life under existing docks which mimics the environment normally found in the prop root system of mangrove trees. Once established, one reef can clean almost 30,000 gallons of water a day. Be sure to come by the display at the Burgee Bar to see one, and consider getting a reef for your own dock--and one to donate to Goodland! (If you live in a condo, you can still get one to donate!) Sixty percent of the price is tax deductible , and together we can make a difference in keeping our Island Paradise beautiful!

First, remember that our Member Recruiting Member Program for 2020 is in full swing! If you bring us a member now in FY2019 and the new Member renews in FY2020 you, as the sponsoring Member, will receive $250 for a Social, Navigator or Non-Resident Member and $500 for a Full or Equity Member – a great reward for doing something for your Club! Each month we say, well, things will slow down, but not at MIYC and not for the Membership Committee! In late September we learned many Members had hidden vocal talents and now, at Shake, Rattle and Stroll, we learned of some great dance and hula-hoop moves! Thank you as we received many leads of possible new Members from many Members. We appreciate that you are proud of your Club and want to have your friends join you all here. Having Members Recruiting Members is the best way to get new Members! The best part of our column is welcoming our new Members!
Members in mid-October. Welcome Aboard to all!
Please remember to wear your name tags to the Club as we have 17 new Members between Early Birds, Trial Members and new Members this Fall! Kathy & Vicki

The MIYC Booth at the Marco Island Chili Cook-off was outstanding! Chef Bob’s Chili was amazing with a nice hint of pumpkin. Staff and Members help serve and hand MIYC brochures. All the hard work paid off. And it was a fun day for everyone!

What is Family Church Food Pantry? Family Church Food Pantry is a ministry run by the Family Church on Marco Island to serve those who live and work on Marco Island, Goodland, and Isles of Capri and East Naples. We are a non-profit and all volunteer ministry, supported by 10 of the local churches and several community organizations. We are the only Food Pantry between Everglades City and mid-town Naples, and opened in January 2016. Mission: Family Church Food Pantry exists to share the love of Christ by reducing hunger and building relationships in our community. Our goal is to offer nourishing food choices, encouragement, and hope. Why is a food pantry needed in the Greater Marco Island area? Locally we have 41% of our elementary children in a free or subsidized breakfast and lunch program and weekend food. But not everyone struggling with hunger qualifies for federal nutrition assistance. On Marco Island, when the "season" comes to a close many jobs go away or reduce their staff work hours so we have the working low income. Seniors, who are often struggling with health issues on a fixed income, are at risk. When school is out for the summer, children no longer receive subsidized food. Many of our families must choose between paying for rent, utilities, medicine, or groceries. These all contribute to the food-insecure — those who may not know where their next meal is coming from. Family Church offers a "hand up" while maintaining confidentiality and dignity. It is about meeting people in their need and walking alongside them. Additionally, on 9/10/17 the eye of Hurricane Irma hit Marco Island causing much destruction and loss of jobs, resulting in a need for even more Benevolence support. This need continues throughout 2018. When is the Food Pantry open or how can I get in touch? The Food Pantry is open on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month from10am to noon, or by appointment. Appointments can only be made when volunteers are present and will consist of pre-packaged bags of food instead of the choice shopping provided during normal hours. The Food Pantry is located at and managed by the Family Church, 1450 Winterberry Drive, Marco Island, Florida, 34145 in the small Annex Building between the ball park and the Family Church. Telephone: 239-394-1646, x225

We had such fun on our Staycation that it is being formally scheduled for December next year to allow everyone to experience an Extended Cruise close to home. We hope that the 50% of the Members who responded to the survey reporting that they have never participated in an Extended Cruise will join us for the Staycation. Also planned are trips to new places like Useppa and old favorites as well as cruises that combine Day and Extended Cruises. One request was that we plan a trip across Okeechobee and either to circumnavigate Florida or travel up the East Coast- let us know what floats your boat!. Last month I mentioned how active the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs boats had been over the summer. That trend seems to be continuing into the Fall; and as the weather is cooling down and people continue to return to Florida, it will certainly be picking up even more.
Bradenton YC, St Charles YC, and 2 from Marathon YC. Being a member of the Florida Council of Yacht Clubs is just one of many benefits of being a full Member of MIYC. If you visit any one of the 32 FCYC clubs all around the State of Florida, you not only get to dock 1 night for free, but you’re welcomed as a fellow boater, friend, and member of their Club. Just as in the other Yacht Clubs, whenever an FCYC member visits our Club Elaine puts their Yacht Club Burgee on the table and makes them feel right at home. It is really a great feeling to be welcomed as an old friend and member. When you are dining in our Club and see a table with another Yacht Club’s Burgee, take a moment to stop and welcome them to MIYC. Find out where they are from and where they are headed next. And when you’re planning your next boat trip, be sure to visit the other FCYC Clubs and

During October, of the 10 boats that visited our Marina, 6 were FCYC boats all from Isles YC. They weren’t traveling as a group but all came separately, stopping either on their way down to the Keys or returning. But not all our visitors are just passing through, some make Marco Island their destination and stay for a while. In November, several boats have reservations for 3 days and on Nov. 7 one yacht is coming in for 6 days. So far in November, 4 FCYC boats have made reservations. They are from
experience that feeling for yourself. Kathy Hershberger - Port Captain
Tennis, anyone? Let us know if you are interested! Do you like to play tennis? Would you like to enjoy a regular tennis game with other Yacht Club Members, playing at Hammock Bay? We are assessing potential interest from Members in starting such a group. Richard and Corinne Margulies have volunteered to coordinate the group and play. LINK
If you are interested in joining with other Members to form a tennis group, please click on this link to let us know! Once we identify that there is sufficient interest, the Margulies will reach out to you to organize the group.

MIYC Reciprocals To All Full and Associate Members: Through the entire month of October , you can still "change it up" and visit other clubs in the area for golf, tennis or to dine. We have reciprocal agreements with about two dozen area clubs, allowing our Members to enjoy their facilities--and their members to enjoy ours. Play 18 holes at The Rookery or Hammock Bay, or try tennis at Naples Heritage. What's on offer varies a bit by the club, so take a look at the complete listing for more details. Reciprocals are also listed on the following page. Most on the list offer golf, but a few, like the Island Club, offer dining only. These clubs also have different days that they are closed, so check and plan ahead. At most of the clubs , you pay by VISA or MasterCard, but at Naples Heritage they require a chargeback to your MIYC Club account. Make your reservation through MIYC at 239-394-0199 or contact the reciprocal club directly, and enjoy one more benefit of your membership at MIYC! MIYC Board of Directors announces the Mariner Society. The Mariner Society was established for the enhancement of our Club experience through refurbishment and development of our Club’s facilities. A Board Committee has been established called the Mariner Development Fund to identify the specific projects or areas needing contributions from members. These projects will be on display for your perusal. Donations should be directed to support capital projects, ongoing maintenance, and/or general sustainability of the Marco Island Yacht Club. Donations can be made by check, credit card, or billing on your Club account. Forms are available to fill out to identify where you wish your contribution to be used. A recognition plaque identifying the program, levels of recognition and individual members’ names reflecting their accumulation of contributions will be on display in a public area of the clubhouse. The Mariner Society recognizes five levels of contribution to the Club: Mariner Society Recognition Levels Platinum $20,000 Diamond $50,000 Sapphire $100,000 Contributions by an individual member will be accumulated, and as their contributions increase, they will move to higher levels of recognition. If you would like to make a contribution or have any questions, please contact Jim McKeown, Chairman, at [email protected] Bronze $500 Silver $2500 Gold $10,000 Mariner Society
