CLIPPINGS AND MUSINGS BY HELEN DUVAL - APRIL 2018

B usiness owners have been hard hit badly affected financially by severe weather and storms of the last three years, according to the FSB. Preparation for any business is paramount according to the Met Office, but likewise, companies need to consider the financial effects should weather cause business closures, so building an action plan would seem the most relevant first step. Risks that could impact a business, whatever its size should be identified with recovery plans put in place regarding buildings and staff, with the option to work remotely where possible if premises are cut off. Naturally, liaising with customers and suppliers to manage damage limitation to any weak links in a supply chain. As severe weather seems to be on the increase, with climate change appearing to create extreme conditions during winter months, for smaller businesses or landlords, it’s imperative to make sure that all the right insurance is in place, to during the cold weather with two thirds of the smallest companies in the UK

protect companies. Let’s hope, for the most part, that the future is starting to look a little brighter.

STAYING SMART With Smartbuildings a focus for many new developers Ecobuild once again proved an innovative show ground that lead the way this year in evaluating new disciplines and evolving ways to approach sustainability. The ecobuild conference once again took centre stage and placed focus on the important issues now and those that will potentially face us in the future. Launched as a platform to evoke fresh thinking, futurebuild highlighted innovative technologies and materials designed specifically for the built environment. The future-build districts enabled some of the best people, brands and companies to collaborate and develop profitable relationships with a view on tomorrow’s market.

GENERAL

It has now been announced that Futurebuild 2019 will continue to be the industry platform for those exploring fresh thinking about the sector. Martin Hurn, managing director of Futurebuild Event Ltd, explains: “From the very start we set out with a bold vision to take an entirely new approach for the event, as well as how we worked alongside our audiences across the built environment. “Futurebuild 2019 represents everything we set out to achieve. It will be an event for the industry, by the industry, and 100% committed to championing innovation and sustainability for the future of the built environment. After all, unless the future is sustainable, and unless we think beyond the status quo, we won't have a future at all.

Central to Futurebuild 2019 will be a new, dedicated 'ecobuild' conference. The ecobuild arena will see industry experts, academics, community leaders and politicians come together to debate and explore cutting-edge thinking around the most critical social and environmental issues.”

LOOKING AT THE FUTURE

Modernisation and developments are key phrases frequently used when taking a business forward, but today there is much more to it as a new dimension must now be considered. The Millennial . Business practices are changing rapidly as ‘Millennials’ change our perspective, influence our

direction and completely alter expectations in the way they handle business. Value in the marketplace has been dramatically altered by the next generation of entrepreneurs who do not understand a time when digital technology was not available. This type of business owner automatically assumes that research platforms, financial forecasts and interesting facts about their latest hobbies can always be found at the touch of a button. They can keep their whole world in their pocket and perhaps more importantly they expect to be able to do that - the must have right now brigade is shackled to devices and tablets as the power of digital technology increases daily. Referred to as lazy by some, this generation actually has taught older generations that efficiency of effort gives maximum impact and technology is the instrument of choice.

Face time is minimised and considered trivial unless it relates to matters of vital importance - technology makes so much possible because it sells results. Modern entrepreneurs are very prepared to research what they will need to learn in order to seal the deal. Knowledge and experience supersede qualifications and that these are in a constant state of flux. If they need some practical how-to advice this is easy to find in an online forum or YouTube video, so the learning process is a continual evolution. Garnering information from someone with experience in the area they are looking to explore is a natural pro-gression for the modern business leader, absorbing experience and stories from trail-blazers and industry experts as role models.

A SPECIAL FOCUS ON NFA17 IGU MANUFACTURER OF THE YEAR - MORLEY GLASS & GLAZING

THE STRENGTH BEHIND THE SUCCESS M orley Glass and Glazing has seen investment, over recent years, which has enabled the specialist IGU manufacturer to carve a niche in the glazing market that appears unmatched by rival companies. This year the company celebrates 20 successful years trading as one of the most distinguished brands in the home improvement and commercial sectors, reporting a 30% year-on-year growth in specialist IGU products. As manufacturers of the nationally recognisable Uni-Blind® sealed units with ScreenLine® integral blinds, last year saw Morley’s acknowledged by its peers as a market leader, with a number of prestigious accolades won, including the highly coveted NFA17 best IGU manufacturer in the fifth annual National Fenestration Awards. exceptional results on the back of hard work, team diligence and corporate

Senior management consider a progressive approach and a focus on quality standards as well as market trends brought about the positive results, which ensure that customers can offer more choice to consumers and a high performance product range that is truly unique. A purpose built facility was opened in 2016 which now houses two, Turkish Best Makina production lines that were the first of their kind in the UK, and this has enabled Morley to further develop its portfolio. Consequently, the entire factory project has been built around rapid, integral blind manufacturing with quality at its core, and has resulted in new products being brought to the market including the new exclusive SL16 slimline option for vertical sliding sash windows and composite doors. Working in conjunction with Italian blind supplier ‘ScreenLine’, has broadened the horizons of both companies and seen a strong association develop, with a determination to bring a top quality range

to the market that will stand the test of time and reap benefits for investors.

Whilst the entire team are passionate about their business success story, Managing Director Ian Short, is equally committed to giving something back to the community, with notable charity works undertaken that have achieved record results for a number of worthy causes. These include sponsoring grass roots sports teams and providing much needed kit, to larger challenges such as raising a staggering £14,000 in a local Strictly Ballroom competition that helped towards the purchase of a new Variety Sunshine coach. Ian’s healthy approach to charitable industry causes does not stop there however, as he regularly works with European companies and their desire to create more efficient business models, which he considers an important part of raising the industry standards as a whole, across the board. Eco-friendly production is also a big consideration to the company, with clean manufacturing procedures a priority and the desire to minimise the company’s impact on the environment always a focus. Even small gestures help in this process, with Ian keen to create a healthier environment by supporting local traders who turn the Italian mdf delivery boxes into unique products such as bird boxes, time capsules and lego toys that all can be enjoyed by children and adults alike. It is evident that the Morley Glass and Glazing journey is heading towards new heights, as quality guarantees and product innovation are being richly rewarded by a discerning sector that recognises excellence, as demonstrated by accolades won, such as the NFA17 Awards.

Morley’s also launched SmartMotion in 2017, which has been appraised and welcomed by customers, as it allows installers to incorporate motorised integral blinds into home automation systems using a simple and efficient technique. The £1 million investment in a modern manufacturing facility has created new opportunities for the company and its customers by giving them greater opportunities to develop their own business potential. Website enhancements with concise, factual POS material supports installers in what can be a fiercely competitive market, with quality and cost competitive solutions all readily available for all sized projects. This progressive stance is reflected in the finished products which include a broad choice that can be installed in both domestic and commercial installations. With a 5 year guarantee, the beautiful Italian designed blinds provide a perfect light control solution for home or business use and can be delivered in a 10 day turnaround. The highest quality standards have resulted in further recognition this year with Morley Glass and Glazing having been shortlisted for Medium Sized Business of the Year, in the 2018 Yorkshire Business Masters Awards. These awards present a great opportunity to showcase a company’s achievements, being acknowledged for recognising innovation and upstanding professional services in the local business community.

#NFA17 WINNERS EVENT THIS FRIDAY!

A t long last we can welcome the winners of the epic 2017 NFA campaign to their winners event, which is held this coming Friday. This is our annual event where we reward the winners of the last National Fenestration Awards campaign. For this year’s event, as we have grown significantly over the past few years, we have had to make a venue change. In previous years, we have held our events at the superb Oulton Park Race Track and nearby MacDonald Portal Hotel. However, with more and more attendees each year, we have outgrown what is feasible at our previous venue. So we had to switch it up. We knew the industry liked it’s horse racing, so we have opted to hold our trophy ceremony and entertainment at the excellent Doncaster Racecourse on Friday April 27th. It all kicks off at 11am, with a drinks reception and of course the all important presentation of awards to all #NFA17 winners. With a packed racing schedule, a superb three course meal, free bar and some added extra entertainment we have organised, it’s set to be an enthralling day. Rain or shine!

Bystronic Glass/HEGLA have paid a huge part in making this event happen. Their support as main sponsors is vital to helping the awards grow and facilitate a winners event each year that provides the industry a chance to toast the very finest. Thanks should also be paid to our NFA Projects sponsors Prefix Systems and Clayton Glass. Also to our category sponsors Edgetech (UK) Ltd, Brisant Secure and GQA Qualifications. A special thanks to GQA also as they have been our longest supporter and have become ambassadors for the NFAs over the years.
