Manager's Message

by Enrique Contreras, CCM, General Manager/COO

On an administrative note, we have finished upgrading our computer systems. We apologi- ze for the inconvenience this may have caused, but it needed to be completed. The next pro- ject will be a telephone system upgrade - this is expected to be finished by month’s end. I would like to thank Thomas Lipscomb and his team; Joe Haggerty and the Pro-Shop employees; Cory Dye and the culinary team and Josh Cardwell and the service staff for the excellent job they all did on the recent Member Guest Tournament! The comments and feedback heard thus far have been great, which provided for a very successful event. We have a painting for sale. It was formerly located in the Ballroom. If anyone is interested in viewing or purchasing it, please contact me via email or phone.

Dear Members, It’s hard to believe that it is already the month of May! Here at the Club, we are getting back to normal - the renovation of the ballroom is almost complete and we will be opening the Mixed Grille Kitchen as soon as we are able. May also brings traditional member events...don’t forget to make your reservations for Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day Brunch. We will continue to have our Friday Night Live entertainment, summer BBQ’s by the pool and Sunday Night Basque Dinner. We will be bringing back Thursday Night Candlelight Dinner, beginning in June. We are gearing up for additional exercise and aquatic classes starting later in May and Eryn has her creativity working for Kids Camp. We are collaborating with the social committee on exciting new Member Events for the summer.

Thank you for your continued support.

Welcome Our Newest Members Olivia Bantz, Harold & Candice Chilton Tom & Carla Franconi, Bradley & Bryelle Malone Alan & Misty Mortezaie, Rasham & Amandeep Sandhu

Seven Oaks Book Club The Seven Oaks Book Club meets each month to discuss books on a reading list which is selected by mutual consent of the Book Club members. All members of SOCC are invited to attend.

Our selection for May is…

The Gown by Jennifer Robson From the internationally bestselling author of Somewhere in France comes an enthralling historical novel about one of the most famous wedding dresses of the twentieth century—Queen Elizabeth’s wedding gown—and the fascinating women who made it.

Balancing behind-the-scenes details with a sweeping portrait of a society left reeling by the calamitous costs of victory, she introduces readers to three unforgettable heroines, their points of view alternating and intersecting throughout its pages, whose lives are woven together by the pain of survival, the bonds of friendship, and the redemptive power of love. Our next meeting is May27 th at 5pm at the Club Please email Bee Barmann @ [email protected] to receive information on joining the meeting.

Message from the President by Mike Burton, President, Board of Governors Hello from the Board of Governors!

I hope this note finds you all happy and healthy. It is with great pleasure that we share with you and we are equally pleased to provide you a status report of our ongoing work at hand. Financially, things are strong. Our first quarter 2021 provided exceptional results and we are well ahead of our budget as we move into the second quarter of the year. This will allow us to pay off our line of credit over the next few months and continue with our short and long term planning. Our Strategic planning committee continues with their work at hand and we will have a report this month on their progress. As was previously discussed, the banquet room is a work in progress with new paint, wall coverings and new carpet and chairs on their way. It is our goal to have things ready for our upcoming events already on the calendar for May and June. Our solar planning continues with the prequalification process under review and formal bids on their way to selected suppliers. Pickleball court bids are slowly being forwarded for review and it is our intent to start construction immediately after award of contract. Our 2021 Men’s and Women’s Member/Guest golf tournaments were just completed. I am pleased to announce that our Board of Directors have approved an appreciation golf tournament for our Medical workers in Bakersfield on Monday, May 17th, 2021 starting at 11 am. It has been a long and very trying year for our Health Care Heroes, so we decided that we should do something for

them. As is always the case at our club, many have already pitched in and volunteered to assist with this very special event. If you would like to donateraffle items for this event, please contact Tonya Bower at tbower@sevenoakscountryclub. com. Thank you all for your support. So, here we are in May and only a month away from construction of our new West Nine - a very exciting time for our club starting June 1. There will be challenges along the way with over 600 golfers and only 18 holes to play during the summer months. I am sure we are all excited to see what the storylines will be at the completion of this project. Golf continues to afford the development of so many invaluable friendships, professional relationships and skills. It is our hope to continue to enhance the quality of our golf course along with tennis, fitness, social activities and your dining experience. All of us on the Board of Governors would like to thank all of you for being a part of our club. You are truly the reason that we dedicate our time. We remain committed and inspired to keep improving every month with the intention of delivering to you the best quality services possible.

Enjoy your time at the club!

What's Cookin' by Corey Dye, Executive Chef

This month I wanted to share with you a recipe for a spicy roasted salsa, just in time for the hot days and fun times with family and friends. This is the salsa I use for my family - we like to eat food as spicy as we can get it! You can adjust the number of chiles to suit your preferred spice level.

1 16oz can diced tomatoes 6 ea fresh Jalapeno 4 ea fresh Serrano 2 med size yellow onions

1 bunch cilantro 2 lemons juiced 2 limes juiced

To start, slice the stems off of the peppers and cut them long ways down the middle of the peppers and roughly chop them. Do the same to the yellow onions.

In a large saute pan on medium heat, add the peppers and onions to the pan; do not put oil in the pan, let the peppers and onions roast and cook. Once the onions and peppers have roasted, add the diced tomato and one full can of water and season with salt. Let the mixture simmer for 20 minutes on low heat. Add the mixture to a blender with the cilantro and juice from the lemons and limes and puree until smooth.

Season with salt, to taste, and enjoy with chips or add it to some homemade tacos.

Links News

by Tom Lipscomb, Director of Agronomy

Steve Heiter April 3rd Lakes 3

Here is an update of some of the items we have been working on:

Sod. We have done a lot of sod work the last couple weeks and these areas look much, much better. Please pay attention to ropes and stakes so you don’t drive your cart through these areas and destroy the hard work done by our Maintenance team. Aeration. We will be doing another Solid-Tine aeration to the rough and fairways the week of May 3rd. This will be of limited disturbance and will be done several more times during the season. Aeration is critical to the survival and improvement of our golf course, especially with all the extra cart traffic over the last year. Compaction from cart traffic is at an all-time high and must be addressed if we are to continue to make steady improvements to the course. Bunker Rakes. The bunker rakes have been returned to the bunkers and we ask that you take the time to hand rake your area of disturbance when exiting the bunker. Once you have finished raking the bunker, please return the rake to its proper location by placing the rake inside the bunker at the lowest point and perpendicular (NOT PARALLEL !!) to the bunker edge. Please remember to always enter and exit the bunkers at its low side, never the high side, and knock the sand off your shoes before entering the green. The course has come through the winter months very nicely, and I have a good feeling about course conditions moving forward. We will be making our second wall-to-wall application of Pre-Emergent Crabgrass control the week of May 10th. As always, we will continue to battle our severe weed issues in the rough. I do see some good results from our constant weed reduction programs, but as mention before, it will take a couple years to get this issue under control.
