CLIPPINGS &MUSINGS

A Greener Christmas For Everyone

Carbon neutral products and manufacturing methods are a real focus for this sector, with eco-friendly products being a key area of development, and we thought we would look at ways that this philosophy can be incorporated into Christmas planning. For those who tend to leave things to the last minute, there may be a few useful tips that will help to make life a little easier and greener over the festive season. Christmas trees One of the biggest choices to be made at Christmas revolves around the type of tree to buy. Some people get feverishly excited about putting up the ‘family’ Christmas Tree that has been around for generations, while others prefer to have a ‘real’ Christmas tree in their home. This presents a dilemma for some, for while choosing the tree is always exciting, particularly for those with younger families or grandchildren, the idea of getting it back to the house is another matter. Here is where the ChristmasTreeMan.co.uk or www.superplants.co.uk/live-christmas-trees can help! The perfect tree delivered right to your door….all you then have to do is decorate it! For those where maintaining it and then coping with needles dropping from it presents a real bone of contention then again this company can help, by renting you a tree which can be delivered, in a pot, to your home! Buying a live tree that can be replanted is also an excellent way to show any children in the family that recycling is important. If replanting isn’t an option and you buy a cut tree then don’t throw it out with the rubbish. Visit www.letsrecycle.com which details when and how your local council works regarding tree recycling.

Festive Feasts If the supermarket dash fills you with utter dread then it may be an idea to try out the local farmer’s market or associated farm shop. You can place your meat and vegetable orders early and then you can either collect, or if they run a delivery service, that’s even better! The vegetables tend to be slightly larger than those found neatly packaged on the supermarket shelves anyway and although they may not be scrubbed quite so cleanly, they give more value for your £s spent. To keep your food really healthy, it is probably better to buy free range and organic turkeys or chickens, but remember to head down to the local butcher or farm shop early to place your Christmas order. Tipple Time Whilst we all have our favourite, beer, cider, lager or bottle of fizz, there are some great organic options available that may make any potential hangovers a little easier to bear. For those wanting to learn a little more about the benefits of organic wine visit this website and the great news is they deliver straight to your door! www.theorganicwinecompany.com/ For anyone thinking of beginning a detox after Christmas as they head towards a healthier new year, then there are some excellent homoeopathic solutions that can help with curing hangovers. Milk thistle is recognised to enhance liver function and is available from most health food stores.

FROM HELEN DUVAL 2021

the UK in a bid to protect ancient woods under threat. It also creates new woodland and to date has planted more than 38 million trees over the last 10 years. By becoming a member a number of trees can be dedicated to someone or virtual gifts can be given to reinforce that green ethic. Visit www.woodlandtrust.org.uk for more details. With so many businesses now focussing on clean manufacturing and producing eco-friendly products, an excellent gift could be membership to groups who are looking to help the planet regarding climate change and biodiversity …all big issues that manufacturers are looking at today. Friends of the Earth and the Rainforest Action Network could be just the thing for someone who holds these is-sues close to their heart. Waste Management Recycling is a massive issue at Christmas and reducing the Festive Footprint by recycling seasonal waste is always a recurring problem. Whilst wrapping paper and plastic recycling is now a priority for most people, knowing what to do with old computers, iPhones, or electrical goods that have been re-placed at Christmas can sometimes be a real nuisance to resolve. Electrical waste tends to be worse at Christmas, with landfill sites being inundated with this type of refuse. The easiest thing to do is take unwanted or broken electronics to your local recycling centre, which can be found by visiting the site : www.recyclenow.com. Generally, most manufacturers now offer recycling advice on their websites …alternatively, if the product is still in good working order, then this could make a great present for someone less fortunate.

Original Gift Ideas We are probably all familiar with that conundrum of what to buy particular people in our family and Red Letter days aren’t always the gifts for everyone. For some people learning a new life skill that is associated with healthier living may be just the answer. Keen gardeners could enjoy the benefits of membership to Garden Organic which is the UK’s leading organic growing charity, and runs courses, talks and workshops. Discover more here: www.gardenorganic.co.uk If energy and technology would be more suitable as a gift, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) also runs courses and produces really useful books and publications on energy, gardening, building and all things sustainable. They can be found at www.cat.org.uk. We all know one - the petrol heads who just love the speed and feel of the open road. With car manufacturers swiftly moving towards cleaner driving ethics, then it may well be opportune to look at some of the tips and products available on the www. idrivesafely.com website. Also for those, about to launch their children into driving lessons there are a number of driving schools which run courses on eco driving and safer travel. www.drivinglesson.com and www.ecodrivinglesson. co.uk offer great advice. Make A Difference If you know that someone has strong views on environmental issues then membership to a club or or trust could be just the type of present that they would really appreciate. HIGH FIVE FOR NFA AWARDWINNING MORLEY GLASS

Uni-Blinds® integral blind manufacturer Morley Glass has triumphed at the 2021 National Fenestration Awards (NFAs) by picking up awards in five categories.

The company was once again crowned the industry’s best ‘Integral Blind Company’ and named the winner in the ‘New Product’ category for its latest exclusive integrated blind innovations, the symmetrical SV+ sliding venetian blind system and the pleated blackout blind. Like all Uni-Blinds, these new products are manufactured using only ScreenLine® blind systems to offer high quality, great visual appeal and reliable long term performance in carefully tailored shading and privacy solutions. Morley Glass was also recognised by the industry for the way it has used video over the last 12 months, both in its own marketing and to support window and door installers large and small by helping them create virtual showroom tours. These videos proved invaluable during the pandemic lockdown periods, and they continue to be an incredibly useful asset to installers as homeowners and developers research new products and services online at the early stage of their search. In addition to these three corporate awards, one member of the Morley Glass team was a double award winner too, reflecting the outstanding contribution she has made to the company’s success. Sales adviser and marketing coordinator Charlotte Gilbert, who has become an integral part of the team since joining just 15 months ago, was presented with awards for ‘Social Networker’ and ‘Young Person’.

Ian Short, MD of Morley Glass said: “I’m absolutely thrilled that we’ve won three 2021 NFA awards for the company, and over the moon for Charlotte for her well-deserved individual awards. A big thank you to everyone who voted for Morley Glass and who took time to get involved with the NFAs in whatever capacity they chose to – as a sponsor, nominee, voter or attendee. “In what has been another pandemic-affected year, Lee Clarke and the NFA team deserve a lot of credit for successfully delivering the NFA awards programme. It is really important for the industry to get the chance to get together in person to celebrate the very best in our sector and we are already looking forward to the 2022 programme!” Morley Glass is the leading manufacturer of integral blinds in the UK door and window industry through its Uni-Blinds branded range. Its 50,000 sq. ft state-of-the-art factory in Leeds is the world’s largest production facility of its kind for Screenline blind systems, from which it serves installers across the UK with the most competitive lead times and complimentary delivery. KOLORSEAL IS CELEBRATINGANOTHER VICTORYASNFACOLOUR SPECIALIST2021!

The company was awarded the accolade in recognition of its colour coating services to the fenestration sector in the NFA20 and NFA21 Independent Industry Awards. The gala event held at Doncaster races on Saturday 6th November, was the first of its kind this year, with trophy presentations for last year’s winners as well the announcement and presentation of the NFA 21 awards. Deborah Hendry, Managing Director, takes great pride in celebrating this achievement which she considers is very much a team effort. With the awards requiring both nomination and voting for by peers in the industry, she believes that there is evidently great belief in the services, products and the customer support. With the National Fenestration Awards being industry led, this win reflects the high standards and the reputation of Kolorseal, in a fair and open way. Deborah comments, “As awards go, for us, this is the best - we are nominated by our customers and suppliers for the dedication given by everyone at Kolorseal. This award makes us all very proud and grateful indeed. We really appreciate every single vote that has been given to us, particularly in such a tough year.” The company is recognised by customers for helping to support their business with quality colour coated

products. Advice is offered on the Kolorseal website to give ideas and colour trends that can help fabricators and installers to grow their businesses. Equally, for commercial contracts where architects and specifiers look to create a striking appearance to both contemporary and traditional building projects, the Kolorseal colour palettes offer a complete choice in both UPVC and aluminium products. For Deborah Hendry, the NFA Colour Specialist of the Year Award has been a morale booster for the whole team. She comments, “In a tough market this is a wonderful achievement. No doubt our success story can be attributed not just to the quality standards we provide but also the drive and commitment of the whole team. It is a great reflection on everyone at Kolorseal and a job very well done!” For more information on Kolorseal Ltd please visit www.kolorseal.co.uk or to discuss a project, please call 01924 454826

THERMOSEAL GROUP – SPACERBARMANUFACTURER OFTHE YEAR FORTHE 2ND YEAR INAROW!

Thermoseal Group, the UK’s leading manufacturer of warm edge spacer systems and distributor of over 2,500 insulated glass (IG) components, has been named ‘Spacer Bar Manufacturer of the Year’ in the 2021 National Fenestration Awards for the second year in a row. The Group also won the award in 2020 and back in 2017. The National Fenestration Awards are the industry’s fastest-growing independent awards which are run and decided completely by the participation of the industry. At the start of each year, there is a nominations phase where anyone can put forward the names of people and companies in over two dozen categories who they believe deserve to be recognised. The industry then votes on a short-list in each category based on the nominations submitted. Thermoseal Group won the award with the highest percentage of the open-platform votes and were announced winners at the NFA Awards event on 6th November 2021. Head of Marketing and Communications at Thermoseal Group, Samantha Hill, tells us: “We are delighted and extremely grateful to win an award which is voted for by those directly related to Thermoseal Group’s business – our customers, suppliers and industry contacts. It’s good to see that our UK-manufactured Thermobar and Thermoflex Warm Edge Spacers, as well as our service promises, are meeting expectations to the point that people take the steps to vote. “I’d like to thank all those who took the time to vote for Thermoseal Group. Your votes are much appreciated, and our teams will all continue to strive to offer top quality UK-manufactured products whilst aiming to always achieve an excellent service. “With this in mind, thanks must go to all of the

Thermoseal Group team who have worked extremely hard throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and in the face of all the issues caused by BREXIT. “Also, a big thank you to Jason and Lee for running the awards, which are now in their 9th year. It’s been an unparalleled couple of years for us all in which good news has been sparse, so recognition such as this carries extra mileage with our teams.” For further information about the National Fenestration Awards, visit www.fenestrationawards.co.uk. KARMADESIGN GAINS GREATERRECOGNITION AFTER NFAWIN

Karma Design, winner of the NFA 2021 Best Digital Specialist, has gained greater recognition since receiving the award in November 2021. Thanks to exceptional digital design campaigns for market leaders in the fenestration industry, the company has gained a far wider audience. For Karma, this higher profile and the ‘icing on the cake’ Award, has already reaped more business contacts and some new customers. Since launching in 2013, bespoke solutions for every customer at realistic costs, has been the focus. Karma provides creative graphic design that meets, matches and exceeds that of larger graphic design houses, with attention to detail pivotal to any project. The NFA win has further established this across the UK for Karma Design. ‘Exceptional design for exceptional value’ is the corporate ethos, which Karma believes proves her diverse skillset and demonstrates that her services are equal to those provided by larger agencies. She comments, “I was so thrilled to be nominated for Best Digital Specialist at this year’s NFAs; to then go on to win against such other high calibre nominees, has reinforced my belief that you don’t have to be the biggest company to be the best.” Karma continues, “I had no idea that I had been nominated until I read my Twitter feed, and had to ask my husband to double check that I was reading it correctly. I am still living on the thrill of the win.” Being familiar with the sector, having worked in-house for a large manufacturer back in 2007, helped her to align her quality standards with those she knew the industry expected. “Working on a new project, means that I understand schedules and will handle the job myself at director level. I can minimise communication delays that might occur with other marketing companies.”

The #bedifferent Karma Design hashtag has proved popular with Twitter followers and was devised to demonstrate to the sector that standing out from the crowd, through different digital mediums, will make a real difference. Karma concludes, “I was tired of seeing the same generic designs being recycled across the window industry. I truly believe that the secret to my success is giving the window industry something entirely different.” That personal service simply cannot be offered by alternative, larger agencies and I believe that this is also demonstrated by my NFA win - customers know they can trust me.” Anyone wishing to contact Karma Design regarding their graphic design projects please visit: www.karmadesignuk.com or email [email protected]

HAFFNER WINS MACHINERY COMPANYAT THE NFA AWARDS 2021

Leading machinery experts Haffner are celebrating a back-to-back win at the NFA Awards 2021. The company, which took the title in the Machinery Company category at the 2020 awards, was again confirmed the winner of the 2021 award. The Haffner team collected their awards at the gala event held at Doncaster racecourse on Saturday 6th November. The event was the first of its kind, with award presentations being made to the 2020 winners and live announcements and presentations of the NFA 2021 awards. Dave Thomas, Managing Director of Haffner, said: “We are delighted to win this award for the second year, particularly as it’s voted for by our industry peers, so it’s a real vote of confidence. I’d like to thank everyone who voted for Haffner as it means so much to the whole team.” The win rounds off another successful year for the Staffordshire-based business. Dave says: “2021 has been an extremely busy and somewhat challenging year for the industry but we have continued to invest in our business to keep pace with the demand for our automated machines. This has included several large- scale investments being made across the business and an increase in staff to support our growth. The investments have kept us ahead of the curve and allowed us to deliver the much-needed automated machines to our customers as quickly as possible.” The National Fenestration Awards recognises all areas of the UK fenestration industry. As Dave says, there is no judging panel and voting is purely down to individuals across the industry to vote and decide their overall winner. This year saw the highest number of votes across all categories, reflecting the growing popularity of the awards. Haffner is a team of industry and technical machine experts who really understand the fabrication industry and the company offers the largest and most comprehensive PVC-U and aluminium fabrication machinery portfolio in the industry. It has an exclusive supply partnership with Italian-machine innovators, Graf Synergy, which is well-

known for its world class seamless welding technology and patented welding techniques. Haffner is also the sole UK agent of Haffner Machinery, which designs innovative and high-quality engineered products at competitive industry prices and supplies a range of aluminium fabrication machines from worldwide machine-giants, Fom Industries. Italy’s Fom Industrie is part of the worldwide FomGroup and has an outstanding product range offering the widest choice of quality machines with competitive lead times. The company works closely with fabricators of all sizes to offer the best in machinery quality and reliability – something that’s just been proved with this second industry award win.

THEWINNING FORMULA

The Selecta success story continues to go from strength-to-strength with record numbers across all areas of the business. Sales Director, Andy Green, talks about the ‘winning formula’ at Selecta and the huge opportunities of being part of the UK’s only independent, family owned and award winning PVCu systems company. As newly crowned winners of PVC Company 2021 at the National Fenestration Awards, we are extremely proud to be recognised by our industry peers for our achievements, especially after what has been a demanding 18 months for everyone in the industry. It’s our third win at the much-coveted awards ceremony, after picking up Systems Company in 2017 and PVC Company in 2018. This is even more gratifying when you consider it has been a year fraught by supply chain issues and rising costs with 2021 certainly being a challenging, yet prosperous year for many involved in our industry. With consumer demand at levels not seen for many years, it has pushed many of a business to their limits and beyond. Indeed, Selecta have been caught up in the torment of supply chain issues. However, I believe we have come out of this far more quickly and respectfully than the majority in the industry, in-turn making us stronger, more focused and determined to continue to provide not just a quality range of products, but also a first-class service and personal support package to our customers. Quality, reliability and trustworthiness have and continue to be of paramount importance to ourselves, just as they are to our customers, when we talk about the products, services and support of which we provide. It’s definitely a winning formula and one we have honed and personally developed with our customers over a number of years. It is often said we go above and beyond on what other systems companies do, but it is what we do and again that is

down to the flexibility, knowledge and long-standing experience within the business. During our record-breaking year, we have grasped the opportunity with both hands to bring forward our expansion and growth plans with new silo’s, extrusion machines, lamination machine and delivery vehicles, coupled with a staff recruitment drive. These investments demonstrate our ongoing commitment to our customers and employees, or Selecta family as they are fondly referred to. These kind of expansion and growth plans are a big statement to the industry as a whole and clearly shows our intent to support and grow with our customers. From a marketing support perspective, 2021 has seen Selecta broaden our focus on furthering our personal customer and marketing support package. Our flexible and engaging approach to providing a personalised marketing support package has been greeted with great positivity, with more customers than ever taking advantage of our free graphic design service for re- branding, logos, flyers and vehicle graphics. To support this even further, we have some very exciting plans well underway to stay ‘connected’ with our customers in 2022 and we are confident of taking our service and support package to a completely new level. For us, winning PVC Company 2021 at the National Fenestration Awards has certainly put the icing on the cake, as we look back on a record year at Selecta. We’re certainly looking forward to a positive 2022, where we will be celebrating 40 years of helping fabricators build and grow their businesses!

CNC Recycling are absolutely thrilled to have been announced as joint winners of the Recycling Company 2021 award at the National Fenestration Awards. Speaking of the win, Managing Director of CNC Recycling Melanie Reid, said: “ As a team we are so proud to have won this award and we can only thank our customers who took the time to vote for us. It is particularly relevant as it is voted for solely by the Industry and is clear recognition of the hard work and commitment that we put into recycling Our primary focus has always been customer service, we don’t have the backing of other recyclers in the Fenestration Industry but what we have is the determination, passion and a love for what we do. A big thank you to the National Fenestration Awards for a wonderful and well organised event.” The award concludes a very successful year for Middlesbrough based CNC Recycling as witnessed by the huge upsurge in the number of new customers and various Recycling schemes launched during 2021.

CNC Recycling will recycle almost 900,000 old window frames this year and this award shows the support in the industry for recycling. It is also an indication of a shift of the narrative away from waste recycling to the management of a valuable and vital resource. As a result of the increase in demand CNC Recycling has made several significant investments throughout 2021 in plant and machinery as they move into the next phase of their growth strategy. Melanie concludes “ We are obviously delighted to have picked up this award. It means so much to the team. Cheshire-based, Alutech approved fabricator, VitrineAlu, was recently awarded Bifolding Door Manufacturer of the Year at the National Fenestration Awards in Doncaster. Considering the business has been trading for only 6 months, this impressive accolade is testament to the hard work of all involved in the set-up and running of the company. Director Duane Rogers, credits his business partners and family, as well as the support from his suppliers. The idea for VitrineAlu has been in the pipeline for nearly 15 years, since Duane and fellow director, Paul Fradley, met at a large independent fabricator in Altrincham where they both worked and soon became good friends, aged just 16. They worked their way up through the company until Duane was offered an opportunity elsewhere, helping to develop their aluminium fabrication process. Then lockdown hit. It gave both men time to think. “It was now or never,” explains Duane. “We knew we had to try it now, or regret it forever. We’d always thought we’d be good at it.” They began by making rooflights but soon realised customers were looking for the whole package rather than multiple suppliers for different products and contacted Holly Sedgwick at Alutech Systems. “We’d heard they had a modern way of working and were impressed by their BF73 system for bi-folding, French and single doors. Alutech seemed to be moving with the times and had a reputation of being good to deal with. In fact, they were one of only a few suppliers prepared to work with us as a new company to help us get going.” Alutech Systems sales director, Mike Moulds, said, “We immediately saw the potential in Duane and Paul, particularly with their years of experience and

expertise and their like-minded approach to social media and

marketing. We were more than confident in giving them the opportunity to become an Alutech approved fabricator.” Now, just 6 months on and VitrineAlu are producing 5 to 6 bi-folds a week, a figure that continues to rise each week. The business has already outgrown its premises twice, is recruiting more staff and investing in more machinery. It’s required some very long hours from Duane and Paul. Duane’s wife, Sarah, has also helped out along with Paul’s dad John, and brother, Geoff, whose support has been invaluable in getting to where they are today. VitrineAlu is now looking forward to settling into their new premises, adding more products to its offer and seeing the new slimline window and patio system from Alutech, due out early next year. www.alutechsystems.co.uk

Hardware expert VBH has teamed up with servicing specialist DG Supplyline Ltd to offer a nationwide installation and service package for the greenteQ Q-Smart electronic smart handle. Q-Smart enables users to access their homes via phone app, fingerprint recognition or proximity fob and has been a very popular addition to both companies’ product ranges since launching this year. VBH are actively selling Q-Smart to their door manufacturer customer base, while DG Supplyline have a long-standing reputation as a main supplier to installers and the after-care/locksmith market. DG Supplyline also have a servicing arm, which has been servicing and repairing windows and doors since 1983. GreenFenster powered by DGS boasts a diverse network of skilled engineers across the country. Dan Powell, Head of Sales at VBH comments “VBH has a great reputation for quality in our own field of hardware supply, so it was vital when seeking a service partner that we worked with a company of a similar standing within their area of competence. We have found that company in DG Supplyline.” Dan Rosewell MD of DG Supplyline says “We’ve been dealing with VBH for many years and we know that they supply only top quality products. When they introduced us to Q-Smart we immediately knew that it was a winning product. We also knew that we had the infrastructure to fill a gap in the market that would benefit everyone.” VBH&DG SUPPLYLINE GETSMART

As well as their installation service, a major part of DG Supplyline’s offering is to provide an after-care service, including planned maintenance programs for Q-Smart doors. Dan Powell concludes “As with all hardware, smart tech needs to be properly maintained to ensure that performance levels stay at their optimum, and DG Suppyline’s experienced engineer network is perfectly placed to provide that crucial maintenance role.” To find out more about Q-Smart, visit www.vbhgb.com, email [email protected], or call 01634 263263.
