It’s Time To Change...

‘To Do’s are a huge part of most of our days and ensuring things don’t keep getting pushed to the bottom of that list can be hard. Nowadays the world of ‘must have right now’ takes over and it can be easy to lose sight of the things that are most valuable to us. Yet good old hard work pays off, along with the idea that mental well-being is important and getting that balance right is now a priority for everyone from production floor to CEO offices. Making changes for the better does require attention and energy, so refreshing that ‘to do’ list is important. While the past cannot be changed, things do get better with time and patience they say. We have seen change in the making a lot this month. Despite a slightly difficult birth there have been some very positive results from the digital expo that was FENEX, new incentives, NFA nominations and voting now underway are all giving the industry a much needed boost. Carrying on with the theme of change, it is interesting to see a new Cabinet now in place after Boris Johnson walked into No.10 with a scythe.

That was quite a shake-up to his front bench since he took office and how it will affect voters and our lives in general remains to be seen but it certainly caused waves as it was far more extensive than anyone could have predicted. Clearly Mr Johnson’s revamp across the seats at the top table of his government benches demonstrates a major To Do list, with a focus it would seem on bringing in domestic changes before another general election. I doubt it came as any surprise that Andrew Neil left hist position as chairman and anchor of GB News after it launched three months ago. Will this news avenue be able to survive now? - again a fo-cus on change will be inevitable. Will Christmas Be Cancelled Again? Fuel companies in crisis and the threat of extortionate rising costs don’t bode well for a happy Christmas season this year. Whilst everyone was accepting, albeit glumly, of families having to be separated due to Covid, it doesn’t look hopeful this year for anything that much better. The threat of food shortages combined with worries on deliveries in just about

every sector along with a lack of drivers, seems to infer that we should all get planning now. Covid-19 is still wreaking havoc although things do appear to be looking brighter thanks to the vaccine programme that has been rolled out. Although the story of the global pandemic is still a work-in-progress, its effect has caused us all to take stock and evaluate the important issues such as, sustainability, mental health, climate change and business adaptability. As people in communities we are extremely fragile and need to evaluate environmental goals at every level. These considerations and the resulting changes will have dramatic effects on business moving forward into next year. Booming demand for builders and installers continues to force prices up. This alongside the shortage on essential products across construction continue to make companies evaluate how to cope. The UK’s construction sector is wonderfully busy but it desperately needs answers to stay healthy and make changes for the better for everyone. The UK government has greatly supported the construction sector in theory, with the

resounding cry of“build back better” to help drive business forward and create growth. These ambitions are wonderful news in a bid to build more homes that are safer and to develop new transport initiatives all of which will bode well for commercial and retail projects….if deliveries and shortages improve. This all sounds wonderful, but as commendable as it seems, the impact of Brexit together with fuel cost implications for business and homeowners will need to see changes for the better and quickly.

MORLEY GLASS SIGN UP TO FENEX 2022 AND FENEX 2023 ATTELFORD

Britain’s biggest and leading integral blinds manufacturer, Morley Glass, has become one of the first companies to sign up to the FENEX 2022 virtual expos and the first at the FENEX in-person exhibition in Telford in 2023.

The rise of Morley Glass over the past two decades has been one of the best success stories in UK fenestration. Operating out of Leeds, they grew quickly to become a major supplier of Pellini integral blinds to installers and fabricators. In 2016 they moved to a dedicated 50,000 square foot factory to help with their rapid expansion. They have not looked back since and have grown rapidly to become the UK’s largest integral blinds supplier. To help aid that growth further, and to cement the Morley Glass brand as one of the entire sector’s best, Morley Glass will be exhibiting at the 2022 virtual FENEX shows as well as the first FENEX in-person exhibition which will be held at the incredibly popular Telford International Centre. Speaking about Morley’s commitment to FENEX, co-founder Lee Clarke said: “To have a company of the calibre of Morley Glass join the growing FENEX platform is fantastic news. The Morley brand has become one of the most successful not just in the IGU and blinds part of the market, but in the whole of UK fenestration. We look forward to working with them in the years to come and to building a successful partnership that will most certainly be of benefit to everyone.”

Ian Short, Morley Glass Managing Director also said: “We’re very excited to be joining the FENEX platform for 2022 and 2023. The new avenues and opportunities this is going to present to us, bringing together the best of both virtual and in-person, is tantalising and we cannot wait to get started and bring our fantastic range of integral blinds to even more of the UK fenestration industry!” FENEX is holding a full virtual expo calendar during the course of 2022, with hundreds of thousands of pounds of investment in market-leading virtual software and marketing campaigns that are going to create a huge impact during 2022. In 2023, FENEX will then return the UK fenestration sector to the very popular Telford International Centre for their first in-person event which has already garnered a hugely positive response from the industry. To enquire about booking a stand please call Lee on 01924 911234 or 07427 854225 or email [email protected]. NEWADDITIONS TO GREENTEQ LIFESTYLE RANGE

Hardware specialist VBH has added a number of new products to its Lifestyle range of products, their umbrella term for hardware solutions for patio doors. Having introduced the greenteQ Clearspan for bi-fold doors 8 years ago, VBH reports that it has enjoyed great success with the product and it is now one of the company’s most popular ranges. Until recently Clearspan has been available for two aluminium profile systems but a flurry of new product development has seen the introduction this year of solutions to suit five more leading systems, including Exlabesa and Reynaers. VBH Marketing Manager Gary Gleeson says “We get nothing but great feedback from customers who already use Clearspan and we’re very excited about making the product available to many more fabricators with the introduction of solutions for more aluminium profile systems.”

Although the Lifestyle range also encompasses Clearlift hardware for aluminium lift/slide doors, and Aspire handles to suit, VBH point out that PVCu fabricators will also find products under the Lifestyle umbrella. As an example, VBH have recently launched the greenteQ Clearslide stainless steel hook lock for PVCu inline sliding doors. Gary adds “Because of the success we’ve had with bi-fold and lift/slide hardware, we’re seen by many as the industry’s patio door hardware specialist. “Clearslide has come about in response to requests from fabricators for VBH to develop an 8 hook locking system within the greenteQ brand. It suits the leading PVCu sliding door systems and our customers can now fit a Clearslide lock, Orion 3 star cylinder and their choice of standard Alpha or Coastline stainless steel handles for a true greenteQ sliding door solution.” To find out more about VBH’s range, visit www.vbhgb.com, email [email protected], or call 01634 263263.

CLEANBILLOFHEALTH FORMASTERFRAME WINDOWSWITH RECENT ISOAUDIT

Recently an audit was carried out by URS on Masterframe’s ISO 9001 quality management system and on their OHSAS 18001 Health and Safety system, enabling transition to ISO 45001. This three day, in-depth audit took place via Zoom and was facilitated by Masterframe’s Technical & Compliance Director, Ray Rabett with all relevant documentation and proof of compliance being supplied by screen share on demand. Commenting on the audit, Ray says “I am delighted that we have been successful in having our certification continued with a successful audit, only receiving minor observations. ISO accreditations ensure that our business is run according to internationally recognised standards and guarantees consistency of production. By subjecting company practices to intense outside scrutiny, our customers are once again assured that not only are we working to our agreed processes, but also striving for continuous improvement.” Ray concludes “The standards for achieving and keeping these certifications are very high. It is the team effort made by all at Masterframe to comply with the terms of our policy documents that has enabled us to achieve a positive result in spite of the challenging times.”

There are several other accreditations that Masterframe have achieved for their products such as the prestigious British Board of Agrément certification of performance; PAS 24/Secured by design for security and BFRC ‘A’ rated certificates for all their products. KOLORING KORNER

The company has developed a process which provides maximum adhesion to the surface of a window, door or composite, where the colour becomes a part of the product. While any colours can be matched the main thing to remember is that RAL colours and Foil colours are different. Debbie Hendry, Managing Director comments, “It is important for both fabricators and installers to understand that Foils are not RAL colours. Anthracite Grey 9016 for example, is very different in a Foil than in a RAL colour. There are many other colours where this would be the case. It is important to understand that if you want something to match a foil colour then you must use the foil code or name when ordering and not a near RAL colour.” Outsourcing the paint spraying process to Kolorseal saves so much time, with a simple and quick 5 day turnaround. Kolorseal is attending FENEX, so Debbie and the team will be available online during the exhibition if you want to discuss anything. Anyone wishing to learn more about Kolorseal and the colour spraying process then do call: 01924 454856 or visit the website for more details: www.kolorseal.co.uk.

Know Your RAL Colours From Your Foils, Kolorseal Advises. When it comes to coloured frames, knowing how to colour match these with roofline and composite doors can be a minefield. Spray-coated colour finishes and foils are two very different processes and come in two very different colour ranges. While Kolorseal can produce window frames, composite doors and roofline products in virtually any colour, when it comes to matching foils it is important to note the differences in colour code numbers. Foil finishes are a type of laminate which can replicate timber and they imitate the traditional grainy look of wooden windows. The different foil colours are heat bonded to the surface of uPVC and provide consumers with attractive coloured alternatives to white. When colour matching these with roofline products, such as soffits and guttering, it is important not to get confused between the different colour chart, as once coloured they can appear very different when placed alongside each other. This can also be a costly lesson to learn. Colour Coating At It’s Best Colour coating windows and doors is a completely different process in which Kolorseal excels. Using any colour chart, the team can colour-match uPVC, aluminium or glass products that have been chosen or specified.

DECEUNINCKALUMINIUM EXPANDS CUSTOMER SUPPORTTEAM

“As Customer Services Coordinator it’s my job to make sure that that offer is underpinned with the right levels of service and support. “Even in the short time that I’ve been here, we’ve brought on a number of new customers and it’s great to be part of a rapidly growing and very dynamic business.” Decalu by Deceuninck Aluminium’s aluminium was launched in the UK in January 2020, gaining traction on the strength of manufacturing efficiencies of up to 40%, plus major installation gains, including the use of a pre- inserted co-extruded gasket and knock-in glazing bead.

Deceuninck Aluminium has expanded is customer support function with the appointment of Klare Dean as Customer Service Coordinator. Starting out in the banking industry, Klare took a career break to raise her family, returning to work in an order processing role in the printing industry in 2016. She joined Deceuninck in 2018 as a Customer Service Administrator, within the PVC-U side of the business, later training as an internal auditor. Klare joined the Deceuninck Aluminium team in July, becoming a key point of contact for its rapidly expanding customer base. She said: “The enthusiasm here is infectious, the team, the customers. Everyone is behind this product. Whenever I’ve spoken to anyone about Decalu, it’s been a positive.

The range includes the ultra-energy efficient Decalu88 Bi-folding Door, the Decalu163 Lift-and Slide; aluminium entrance doors; casement windows; turn-and-tilt; and reversible windows. Nigel Headford, Director, Deceuninck Aluminium, said: “Klare is passionate about service and that’s absolutely key for us because from day one we’ve always said that if our service levels are the same as everyone else’s then we’ve failed. We want to be the best. “Klare’s appointment is a key part of the jigsaw and she’s going to be instrumental in taking us to where we want to go. We’re delighted to bring her on board.” For more information call 01249 816 969, email [email protected] or visit www.deceuninck.co.uk

DO WE NEED TO STOP SELLING?

That sounds an odd question. In the world of business, you never stop selling. It’s literally what you exist to do.

But as we all know, we are operating in extraordinary circumstances. And in the various conversations, I have every week with you find industry folk, the idea that we need to put a brake on the selling of windows and doors for a bit is one I am starting to hear a bit more often. Given the extreme environment within UK fenestration, would a pause in sales be helpful right now? Emergency brake Here’s another thing I am hearing more of, and that is how navigating lockdowns was easier than this period we’re in right now. That sounds bizarre but I can see the point people make when they say this. During lockdown, no one was buying. Everyone was at home and we were all in the same boat. No one buying, no one making. Everyone planning. Now, we’re trading knowing full well that deliveries promised on a certain date probably won’t arrive, there are product shortages in every direction and communication is grinding to a halt. This makes for an incredibly high-pressure trading environment, which is causing huge amounts of stress and tension between clients and colleagues alike. The fact is though, the supply chain is struggling, and it’s getting worse. Glass supplies are seriously crippled, especially toughened and laminated products, as well as tinted and decorative glass. We’re being warned about coloured profile shortages, hardware and polymer. Add to that transport costs going through the roof, international shipping has just gone insane, there’s an acute lack of labour and I have seen reports of one systems company slapping very high double-digit price increases on steel. All that combined makes for a supply chain that is close to being on its knees. No one is operating smoothly. Nothing is guaranteed and by all accounts, it’s going to get worse towards the end of the year. Yet, knowing all of the above, we’re all continuing

to sell our products across the supply chain, knowing full well that orders places may well not be fulfilled. Is it time to pull an emergency brake? Fabricators I speak to are running on empty. Struggling to get product, deliveries in chaos, irate installers giving abuse down the phone. Do we need to start taking stock of where we are and stop selling for a period? Perhaps one month. Maybe two? Steady, but visible car crash Here is the thing I am worried about. And I am speaking in my capacity as an industry person as well as someone who operates an installations business. Installers keep selling in huge numbers, taking orders and then placing orders with their suppliers. Installers also know full well that the chances of getting what they ask for right now are nowhere near what they should be. We’re all going around continuing to sell our goods in the knowledge that they might never arrive, in the worst case. This is only going to lead to further frustrations on the B2B side of this sector, as well as awkward and angry conversations with homeowners when they get told they’re going to be delayed time after time. As we know, demand is way higher than supply can keep up with. The supply chain is being hit from all angles with a multitude of problems. Companies are unable to build up any kind of stock levels. As soon as something is made it is sold and straight out of the door. No reserves are being built up. This is a car crash waiting to happen, and we can all see it. The question is, are we prepared to try something else which might make our lives easier in the long run? It has been suggested to me recently that the sector really needs to close down for a month, maybe two, so that manufacturers can build up some level of stock and

resilience. At this current rate, the supply chain is likely to continue breaking down. So, let’s ponder on that idea for a moment. Christmas is coming up soon. We’re already in September. We close for a fortnight as an industry. Is there room to close a couple of weeks earlier? Can installers for this year only press pause and stop? Fitting doesn’t have to stop. Most should have plenty in stock. But sales could be held off for a few more weeks. This would give fabricators a bit more breathing room. Time to get deliveries of orders placed out of the door, and more time to build up stock levels in the background.

It was suggested to me that the industry could actually do with two solid months off. Whilst I understand the yearning for such a thing, the reality is that we won’t stop selling, even if it’s not the best thing for us right now. Companies will always say yes to new sales, it’s in the blood of people. But whilst we do, we must be honest with our clients and explain that things are likely to be delayed, parts are going to be missing and prices are going to keep going up for months to come. It’s less than 100 days to Christmas by the way!

Decalu88, the next generation bifold from Deceuninck Aluminium, has successfully completed PAS24 testing on a 3m tall door. Put through their paces by leading testing house Elements and accredited by BM Trada, testing was completed in June, with two configurations of the Decalu88 passing at the first attempt. Nigel Headford, Director, Deceuninck Aluminium, said the accreditation was an important addition to the Decalu offer. “The Decalu88 Bifold is a proven system. PAS24 gives us the additional approval in new build applications. “What for me is the really exciting achievement is how we went through testing, with first time passes on two 3m high doors representing a very real achievement and evidence of how highly engineered this product is.” Launched at the beginning of 2020, the Decalu88 Bi-fold has gained a significant following among installers based on ease of installation. This includes glazing of each sash in as little as 5-minutes through the use of a co-extruded pre-inserted gasket, and two fully adjustable jambs, each offering up to 7mm tolerance, simplifying door squaring and setting. U-values are as low as 0.68W/m2, with each sash able to accommodate weights of 200kg and up to 3m

in height, it also offers impressive design flexibility, while guaranteeing ultra-smooth running. Deceuninck Aluminium put two door configurations through testing – a three pane 3800m wide open in door in a 3-3-0 configuration, manufactured to a height of 2745mm. Sashes were 1210mm, with a reduced handle height on the opening door to emulate a 3m high product. It also tested a four pane 4000mm wide open-out door in a 4-3-1 configuration. “These are big doors – each sash was roughly 10ft high by 4ft wide”, added Nigel, “What it also gives us is testing against a complete set of configurations, which means going forward, our customers can offer a PAS24 tested door, regardless of configuration. “We know we have a highly engineered product offer, we know it has incredible reach in home improvement and new build sectors, and we also have test >Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page 10 Page 11 Page 12 Page 13 Page 14 Page 15 Page 16 Page 17 Page 18 Page 19 Page 20 Page 21 Page 22 Page 23 Page 24 Page 25 Page 26 Page 27 Page 28 Page 29 Page 30 Page 31 Page 32 Page 33 Page 34 Page 35 Page 36 Page 37 Page 38 Page 39 Page 40 Page 41 Page 42 Page 43 Page 44 Page 45 Page 46 Page 47 Page 48 Page 49 Page 50 Page 51 Page 52 Page 53 Page 54 Page 55 Page 56 Page 57 Page 58 Page 59 Page 60 Page 61 Page 62 Page 63 Page 64 Page 65 Page 66 Page 67 Page 68
