NET PROMOTER SCORE EXPLAINED The Net Promoter Score is an index
Net Promoter Score Calculation Customers are surveyed on one single question. They are asked to rate on an 11-point scale the likelihood of recommending the company or brand to a friend or colleague. “On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely are you to recommend this company’s product or service to a friend or a colleague?” Based on their rating, customers are then classified in 3 categories: detractors, passives and promoters.
The Net Promoter Score (NPS) is determined by subtracting the percentage of customers who are detractors from the percentage who are promoters. What is generated is a score between -100 and 100 called the Net Promoter Score. At one end of the spectrum, if when surveyed, all of the customers gave a score lower or equal to 6, this would lead to an NPS of -100. On the other end of the spectrum, if all of the customers were answering the question with a 9 or 10, then the total Net Promoter Score would be 100.

DETRACTORS ‘Detractors’ gave a score lower or equal to 6. They are not particularly thrilled by the product or the service. They, with all likelihood, won’t purchase again from the company, could potentially damage the company’s reputation through negative word of mouth.
PASSIVES ‘Passives’ gave a score of 7 or 8. They are somewhat satisfied but could easily switch to a competitor’s offering if given the opportunity. They probably wouldn’t spread any negative word-of- mouth, but are not enthusiastic enough about your products or services to actually promote them.

Yet, as an international student majoring in a non- electrical/CS/mechanical/chemical engineering focus, I find my professional opportunities very limited in NSBE. • “I think it is important for black engineers to network and to help each other with problems that may be unique to black engineers. I give an 8 because I think NSBE offers more for PCI and collegiate members.” • “Recommendation would mostly come from ability to network through the local chapter and attendance at conferences; I would also recommend NSBE to give others a chance to give back to current students. I know NSBE is a student run organization but once you enter into the Professional world, more focus should be on Professional activities. There are members of NSBE Professionals who are in the 40s. If all the events are geared towards the youth, how do you expect to keep the interest of someone who is older. This what separates some of the other engineering organizations from NSBE. Someone who is in the 40s or 50s has a wealth of knowledge that should be shared across NSBE professional.” • “The emphasis is more on collegiate and pre collegiate instead of professional/young professionals. • “I have been a NSBE member for almost 20 years and I am a NSBE Jr Chapter Advisor for the past 2 years. I am not proud to promote NSBE because of the unprofessional experiences NSBE gives to parents when it comes to participating in events. For example, the registration process for Annual Convention 2019 last year caused hundreds of families (already living in Detroit) not to attend. At the SEEK camp in Detroit in 2019, my kid was injured on the playground with a head wound that required stitches. I was not informed until my child told me when I picked her up. NSBE did not train their workers well. In my opinion, I think NSBE needs to be operated by NSBE Professionals, not students. Professionals have access to and experience with using professional services conference planning, website and social media management services, and most importantly, Professionals can easily provide enjoyable Parent experiences because we are Parents. I have seen a non-Parent miss something important every time they plan a event for Parents & children. This observation is universal, not just for NSBE.” • “I’ve never been impressed by NSBE. There’s just something that is very inefficient about this organization. The university chapters are not friendly or do not build community, the regional customer care lines are poorly constructed, getting a refund takes ages. Also, conference fees shouldn’t be this ridiculously expensive. If you claim that you are a family and want to help each other why would you charge such a large amount of money for conferences? Work on this!”

I reached out to the president and/or director of NSBE and was not offered any help. And because of this situation I had, I’m not 100% sure if I want to put my child in any other program.”

I want to emphasize resources because NSBE provides no support to NSBE jr.chapters. Subsequently students who have talent and Drive if they are economically disadvantage they will most likely not get an opportunity!” • “1. I wish NSBE had better support for NSBE, Jr chapters and its’ young members. College is too late to really get students interested and on the right path academically to pursue degrees in engineering and STEM especially if the middle and HS aren’t preparing them in math. 11 At the national level, NSBE is unorganized • “I just think it can be more organized and respond to the vital virus a little better.” • “As much as I love the mission, the org send to be disorganized at times and disjointed. However many aspects of the organization such as conferences, conventions, chapter recognition etc. do not always represent/ fully fulfill the mission of NSBE. I feel that as you look higher in the organization on the regional and national level there seems to be a disconnect or convolution in communication and support.” • “I’ve been a professional member for the past 3 years or so and have yet to consistently receive relevant information from “Local Region II” representatives. I’m highly interested in participating in community based activities however, have no information regarding monthly, quarterly or annual chapter meetings has been received. I received one update from the previous President (Ernest) however, no one has contacted me since. Therefore, at this time, I am uncomfortable recommending any of my colleagues to join.”

They associate NSBE with college and will not join the professional chapter.” • “For kids in college, I totally would recommend it. For myself in the professional realm, I would recommend it to the younger professionals.” • “If i know students or recent Grads i think its a great organization, however as a more senior professional its harder to give reasons for joining if they arent tied to the cause through children or past experience or the need for a job” • “NSBE seems to be very conference focused - there need to be other avenues for members - especially Professionals - to be involved.” • “I see the PCI components as very valuable, however the professional benefits are not as consistent. I love this organization and wish that the consistency across chapters was stronger.”
Collegiate Chapter is the best. Some of the best STEM programs and opportunities for the students and parents are offered. The chapter shares a wealth of meaningful STEM information with both the students and parents. The chapter genuinely cares about the well-being of the students.” • “Our NSBE Richmond Nubian Village Pre- Collegiate Chapter is the best. Some of the best STEM programs and opportunities for the students and parents are offered. The chapter shares a wealth of meaningful STEM information with both the students and parents. It allows my family member and students to experience African Americans in a positive “light” as well as advocating the STEM philosophy. I would love to return to receiving the magazine through the year since my family member and students are not currently in the PCI of NSBE.”

1 Access to a community of Black Engineers for networking and support • Great for mentorship, career opportunities, building a community of people with similar professional goals, and can experience multiple leadership roles. • It really is a great way to connect with people from the African Diaspora while in college. It gives you a place to fit in on campus, provides you with hope and joy and also gives you great business opportunities. It gives you a chance to give back to the community while also helping your community. • NSBE is the type of organization that helps you in your career, even more than it does in college. The networking is amazing and it give you leadership experience with professionals that is hard to come by on the job, especially early in your career • NSBE provides so many resources necessary for student success as well as a supportive community. • I’ll let anyone know provided they are down for the cause. • So that they can benefit from the professional and social networking available through NSBE. • Great organization, opportunities to meet talented individuals, great for networking, opportunities to gain long lasting friends. • In a career where there are not very many people of color represented, having a community of fellow black engineers is so valuable. I’ve enjoyed my time with NSBE and I continue to network and recruit. Everyone who has joined is happy to have our NSBE chapter as an outlet for events, community, and as an avenue for professional networking. • This is a wonderful family of people striving to promote black engineers in all stages of their careers and interests.
• NSBE has been one of my biggest support system throughout my college journey. I have made lifelong connections and family from NSBE that will last me a lifetime. I would gladly and without hesitation recommend this organization and my chapter to any and everyone in need. • I would recommend NSBE because of the familial feeling each member gets. You can always find someone who truly understands your situation as a black engineer and opportunities to take your leadership to a whole new level. Because of NSBE I have been able to expand my understanding and application of strategic planning processes and parliamentarian procedures. • Amazing family-feel organization with national recognition, has given me opportunities to become a better student, professional, and person. • NSBE is a way to connect with other students in a way that’s productive socially and academically. It puts students in the position to communicate with recruiters and know what they’re looking for. • How likely am I? For years I’ve been recommending NSBE to every parent and age appropriate child of color! Although I am not a member of NSBE, I have college friends who are members. My daughter participated in NSBE’s SEEK program (grades 3-5), and she is currently a member of NSBE, Jr. Our family loves our DMV NSBE, Jr. chapter as it offers a wealth of events, classes and opportunities to its members. Additionally, our chapter advisors are amazing! I would love to see every child of color become a member. • “I believe that NSBE is a great organization as it served me well in my undergraduate years. I’ve recently rekindled that passion in my professional years.

I can thank nsbe for my first internship or connecting me with my dream company. My leadership skills have grown because of nsbe and i know I’m never alone because of the NSBE Family • Great opportunities to network, impact the community, and pursue personal development. • Exposure opportunitiles and relationships • As an engineer and STEM professional, NSBE has been an excellent vehicle to network and work with fellow STEM professionals but more importantly a fantastic mechanism to give back to my community and chosen profession. • NSBE has help me to network, find and receive internships. The chapter has helped me learn the networking skills and skills needed to build and continue gaining knowledge in the corporate world. • Meet mentors • Have seen the organization in this area doing amazing work in PCI and support of NSBE collegiates and professionals. • NSBE has been there for since the first week of my freshman year. The love, opportunities, and overwhelming support that I have always felt is something I truly value. Having a group of people with similar struggles who look like you means everything when you’ve always been the “outsider”. NSBE alleviates imposter syndrome for me and I owe a lot to this organization.
• From personal experience NSBE has done a lot for me in terms of allowing me to build on my professional and leadership experiences. I like the familiar bond that I have with my chapter members and I liked serving on the Region 1 board and I especially loved attending conferences. I go to a PWI and I have attended various conferences but when I go to NSBE conference I feel really empowered getting to be around more people like me. Additionally, I don’t feel like I’m in a cutthroat environment where I have to be constantly proving myself and further a lot of my mentors are products of NSBE. It is my hope that others could have similar experiences through NSBE and so I tend to recommend it often. • NSBE provides resources for students and professionals like no other organization. As early as elementary school to professionals NSBE had something for everyone. When I was in college I would not have graduated without the support of my NSBE chapter. There is power in community. I also received my full time job at NSBE annual convention. I know this true for many of my friends and mentees. • I think NSBE is a great way to connect with other black engineers. • NSBE’s investment in black engineers is important and why not share so that my peers are able to take advantage of a strong network of professionals who actually care about your success. • The opportunity to network, contribute to the community, and develop professionally amongst like minded individuals • NSBEs partnership, support, resources and guidance are invaluable. For me to see successful adults that look like ME is priceless!

• Nsbe is an organization that I have Part of for over 305 years . I have been a member , chapter leader , regional and national leader as a student . I have been a professional leader and sponsor of the mission. And it’s programs . In that it is a organization that impact the community through education and mentor ship to youth and college students . It brings hope to the community through fellowship and family that we can grow as a community through NSBE . I constantly tell my peers if they have children and college students in and/or interested in STEM to connect with Nsbe either at the NSBE Jr , collegian and professional chapter . Everyone I refer as always said it has been beneficial ! • NSBE is such a great community to be a part of and it’s an inspiration to see so many PoC making strides in STEM. It serves as a foundation for aspiring STEM enthusiasts to excel in a variety of career fields and connects those same enthusiasts with a network of support at multiple levels throughout their lifespan. • I believe NSBE is a form of unity between the minorities within the engineering world. Knowing that you’re not the only one of your kind in this struggle helps a lot • NSBE is family but I would love for more people to be part of this! Also, the opportunities NSBE brings is something people shouldn’t be left out on. You can find a lot of good mentors in NSBE, another reason why I would bring someone in • The collaboration, exposure to new opportunities for our children and camaraderie with the peer groups that our children are engage with • I love the mentorship and community involvement that Nsbe has. I love the workshops and the professional tips provided at conferences. I’ve been offered a job at every conference I’ve attended.
• The community and family from NSBE has made being away from home another home. Also, our chapter (Univ. of Southern California) has so many opportunities and events to engage with not only each other but neighboring and partnering communities and professionals. • Opportunity to network and grow your career. • NSBE Jr exposes students the STEM careers, mentors and valuable communication and leadership skills. My daughter has been a member and served in leadership over 4 years. She starts LEAD in High School in August because of her participation in the competitions and interest in Science and Technology. She found students with similar interests in NSBE. • There are engaging events at the professional level locally that are not just for Engineers. • NSBE not only helps connect with people that are similar major but with people who have the same goal and a similar mindset as well. NSBE helps push African Americans to succeed not only professionally but as an individual as well. • There are good opportunities, scholarships, networking available • I would recommend a friend to NSBE because I love how not only my chapter, but also the region is a family and how we are connected to each other. • I would recommend NSBE to a friend or colleague because NSBE has been a great resource and family for me during my first year in university. I’ve made very close friends in my chapter, but I’ve also had the ability to connect with other NSBE students in Region 5. Additionally, NSBE has provided great networking opportunities such as workshops and conferences. I think very highly of NSBE. • The networking opportunities and career development community is unmatched for African Americans and other people of color. • My NSBE chapter has provided me with supportive mentors, lifelong friends, and ways in which I was able to challenge and grow. I would recommend every Black engineer to join. • NSBE was the 1st organization I joined in undergrad. It opened a whole new world for me and made me proud to be a black engineer. I got to travel to conferences all over the country and interact with many different members and companies. • Information, collaboration, inclusion, connection. • As an executive member at my chapter at the University of Central Oklahoma, I have been able to witness firsthand the effects and benefits that being a member of this organization can provide, from peer support and job opportunities to financial assistance and new relationships. • I was able to find a home away from home in college and develop relationships that will last past my undergrad years. also there are a lot of opportunities that would’ve never been available to me if I wasn’t apart of this society.
• NSBE has been vital to my matriculation through 3 engineering degree programs, all at predominately white institutions. Organizations like NSBE have provided safe counterspaces for African American women like me who do not always feel welcome, valued, or important in our current engineering environments. • I am a lifetime member so my view of NSBE is already at Max. I selected 9 based on the unique needs or concerns of whomever I meet and the potential to match them with active initiatives or programming. • NSBE is truly like a family. The support from this organization, far and wide, can be felt individually. • The network and resources are invaluable • NSBE has been my support circle for the past 2.5 years and I want someone else to reap the same benefits and opportunities as I have from being rewarded scholarships for tuition assistance and getting involved with workshops at conferences to improve my leadership skills. • NSBE is a great way to help each other as a community. Being a member of NSBE has helped me to connect to a lot of opportunities which I couldn’t obtain before. • They have helped me in my career, as far as the conference and financially, through scholarships. I have had multiple opportunities to serve as a leader and grow my leadership skills, but it wasn’t until I served in what I consider to be the highest honor (chapter president) that I really defined for myself servant leadership. • NSBE has meant a lot to me in my journey of becoming an engineering, and I feel that the more students we can get involved with NSBE, the more will make it through engineering. • The community is unmatched and the network is priceless. Love my NSBE family and the mission. • NSBE is a wonderful organisation that has helped so many students especially the minority in appreciating STEM. They prepare the students registered as NSBE Jr for standardized exams. These students receive college application information, how they get admitted and scholarships. They organize conferences for the students giving college student access to many companies where they get opportunities of good job offer. Lot of students get good mentor-ship. • i like that there area lot of programs / programs for young children to get involved with to understand STEM. • I would definitely recommend NSBE to a friend or colleague because of its’ prestigious standards it continues to maintain in and outside the company. This Organization is made up of the brightest and best engineers, scientist and professional within the United States and internationally. It connects the black community the most professional methods. • NSBE is an amazing organization that has done so much for me as an individual and black engineers all around the world. NSBE truly lives up to its mission statement which is, “To increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” • I believe in the organizations mission and goals. • I would say it came highly recommended by everyone would had been a part of it in time past. In fact, it was highlighted as the most important conference to be attended by any international student in USA as it is not only limited to blacks as the name portrays. It is rated 9 because I am yet to have a first hand experience. • Nsbe is the STEM Pipeline for African Americans who are passionate in STEM. I Have been a member since college. Truly it has been a part of life and allowed me to be connected as family to other like minded STEM students and Professionals. It is important that every one belong to NSBE . We are still young as a organization , but I feel we truly discern that NSBE is a member organization focused on its members and chapters ( community) . • The National Society of Black Engineers is my favorite organization. I learned about this group during my undergraduate career at GeorgiaTech. It is a shame that they did not have a NSBE Jr. chapter in my hometown, so I could have learned about this organization earlier. I have really benefited from my participation in the “Society!” I have networked with many individuals that have distinguished themselves in Corporate America. I am confident that my experience with NSBE, helped me in obtaining employment with some of the finest corporations in the nation, including General Electric and Northrop- Grumman Corporation. I strongly recommend this organization to those interested in engineering! • No reason not to, NSBE has helped many people of color and even those that aren’t. This is a great organization. • Strong connections with the industry, scholarships for students, and the sense of belonging as a black student on campus. • The fellowship of like professionals is crucial to avoid the potential loneliness inflicted by our culture. • NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community.” This is something that will have a positive impact on the lives of so many people. I want to be part of the success and also want my friends to be part of it. • Because through NSBE I have gained a lot of industry colleagues and through various workshops, career guidance and fairs I have become more confident and comfortable • NSBE has always been the premier organization supporting the recruitment and development of Black talent. From pre-college to collegiate to professional programming, it is a must for all lovers and supporters of STEM education and careers.
• I think NSBE is an essential connection to our community within corporate America. • NSBE has been a major foundation in my success as a student in engineering. It has provided a sense of family and belonging that can’t be found anywhere else for a student of color in the STEM fields. • There is SO much value in the comradery that NSBE provides. I also love the intentionality in which the chapter develops professionals. • Great program with networking opportunities and representation • Ingenious way to connect students with college and then the workforce. • Because NSBE is a family unit which is nice to have when you’re in a field as a minority. Black engineers often are alone in class, and have few people to relate to. Having a space to connect and support one another on our rigorous journeys is critical to our development, so I recommend it to every black engineer I see. Also, the opportunities at the conferences are invaluable. Companies, for whatever their own reasons, genuinely have opportunities to share. Therefore, these conferences are a real platform for members to express their value and be recognized.

• As a graduate of a HBCU, I had the experience of having professors that looked like me and supported me. My experience in the school of engineering at Prairie View A&M University was a very positive and rewarding college journey. As I mentor and support students from predominantly majority schools, I have found that their experience is not as rewarding. They do not have professors that look like them or come from similar backgrounds or share if they succeed. NSBE offers students from majority based colleges an opportunity to meet professors, students, professionals, etc. that look like them and can relate and encourage them. This is why I would recommend the organization to my friends and colleagues because they need the reinforcing experience that NSBE offers. I try not to miss a convention or conference because I get rejuvenated to back into Corporate America after attending a NSBE event. • They have many connections and network opportunities to get you connect to people who can get you research opportunities and internships • I love my NSBE chapter. I have found a small family within a big campus and i’ve made a lot of connections that I wouldn’t have if I wasn’t apart of this society. • I love the black comradery and connections made through NSBE. Only not a 10 because the organization is not perfect, sometimes it’s too Bureaucratic. But overall, it’s amazing. • Networking, working with like minded people in different fields. • With NSBE I have found more than just an organization, but a family. I am very confident that without NSBE, I wouldn’t have found the career opportunities I have, nor would I still be an engineering student. NSBE means so much to me and I recommend joining to friends and colleagues quite often to hopefully share the benefits that I have found within this organization.
