Disabled Employees Awareness Month The month of October is recognized as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). The Office of Disability Employment Policy announced that the theme for this year’s NDEAM’s theme is ‘America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion’. NDEAM is held each year to recognize the contributions that people with disabilities have on America and to reemphasize the notion that people with disabilities must have full access to employment and community involvement, especially while the nation recovers from COVID-19. The Office of Disability Employment has many resources in which individuals can educate themselves about how to be more inclusive, in and out of the workplace. It can be found here.

Meet the CIO Please give a warm welcome to Doug Torre, our new VP, Chief Information Officer! Before joining CSHL, Mr. Torre was head of technology for the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. His work focused on the modernization of the solution architectures, adopting “cloud first” platforms and initiating a cyber security program. Prior to Mellon, Mr. Torre was Chief Technology Officer for Northwell Health. At Northwell he led technology innovation, architecture, security, and operations. He also pioneered the use of service- oriented architectures to improve population health. We are glad to have Doug at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. He said he was drawn to CSHL because of its powerful research mission and knew it was a very special place. He is very excited to be here. Outside of work, Doug is a husband and a father to 4 boys in lower Westchester. Mr. Torre is an active mentor, supporting the Columbia University’s Master of Science in Technology Management program. Originally from Buffalo, Mr. Torre founded a charity focused on improving technology access for disadvantaged youth. Since its inception, the Ed Tech Foundation of Western New York has supported more than 150 schools, organizations, and community centers.

Immigration

Location-Based Travel Bans will be Rescinded in Early November 2021 for Fully Vaccinated Foreign Travelers Arriving by Air

Effective early November 2021, the travel bans on entry of foreign nationals arriving from the Schengen Area countries in Europe and from the United Kingdom, Ireland, China, Iran, Brazil, South Africa, and India will be lifted for those foreign travelers who are fully vaccinated and submit proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken within three days of their travel to the United States. As a result, travelers who were physically present in these countries will no longer be required to obtain a national interest exception (NIE) before entering the United States. Adult foreign nationals arriving by air will be required to provide proof they are fully vaccinated prior to boarding a plane (with very limited exceptions for children, clinical trial participants, and compelling humanitarian reasons). The Biden administration has not yet provided precise details, such as the exact effective date on which vaccines are acceptable or a list of permissible forms of proof of vaccination. This change does not affect current restrictions at land borders, which will remain in place until at least October 21, 2021. The requirement to produce proof of a negative COVID-19 test for all passengers arriving in the United States from international flights (including U.S. citizens and residents) remains in force. The CDC will also be issuing additional prevention measures, including pre-departure and post-arrival testing, as well as a Contact Tracing Order implementing a number of precautionary measures, such as requiring arriving travelers to provide their email addresses and cell phone numbers.

Vaccination Requirement for Green Card Applicants

Effective October 1, 2021, green card applicants will be required to obtain full COVID-19 vaccination in order to clear their immigration medical exam and obtain permanent residence, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) order. For more information regarding vaccine requirements, please visit the CDC site.

Address Updates

International students (F-1) and Postdoctoral Fellows (J-1) should report their physical address and mailing address (if different from physical address) change within 10 days of moving. Students and employees are encouraged to change their address in Employee Self Service (ESS), and send a follow-up email to Victoria Panebianco. She will then update the Student & Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) with the new information. H, TN, O-1, and U.S. green card holders are required to report their new physical address within 10 days of moving to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) by completing form AR-11 Alien’s Change of Address Card online.

Ukulele Night Join us for a Ukulele Night on November 12th at 7:00 pm. Supplies will be delivered to your house. The host will teach you how to tune your ukulele and to play a song. To register, visit Eventbrite - CSHL Create a Ukulele. A Zoom link to the virtual event will be sent to you. CSHL will cover the cost for employees. Family members will be charged a $79.99 fee. Please bring a check to Human Resources (Luke Building) payable to CSHL. Advanced registration is required.

Halloween Events Join us on October 29 th on Blackford Lawn at 4:00 pm for a pumpkin painting, pumpkin carving, and costume contest. The pumpkin contest will have a best carved and best painted category, with adults and children being judged separately. Please drop your pumpkin off in the Blackford Bar on 10/28 and take it home with you by the end of the day on 10/29.

All are encouraged to participate in the costume contest at the same place and time.

If there is inclement weather, all activities will be moved inside Grace Auditorium.

WiSE Events

Professional development Workshop hosted by COACh WiSE is hosting a professional development workshop in partnership with COACh called “Career Launch & Acceleration” on Zoom on Thursday Oct. 14, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am. Workshop description: This workshop provides techniques necessary for an effective career launch into the job that best fits your skills and interests. This will help position you to be most effective in finding and applying for a variety of job positions, developing a tailored CV for the position and being an effective communicator in the interview. Additional topics include effective communication methods for teaching and research presentations, importance of network building and finding a mentor, building a strong CV and developing an professional internet presence. During this day-long meeting, WiSE welcomes scientists-in- training at CSHL and from neighboring NY-based institutes to attend lectures given by WiSE board members and invited guest speakers on gender disparity. At these “lunch and learn” events, WiSE members speak about their research, their path to CSHL, and what life is like as a scientist. The goal of these meetings is to promote the application of scientific scrutiny to peer-reviewed literature on gender disparities.

Long Term-Employment Luncheon and Dinner Over the past month, we have had the opportunity to honor the anniversaries of our long-term employees with a luncheon and dinner. We were unable to do this in 2020, due to COVID-19. We truly appreciate each and every one of them for their continuous hard work, and we cannot wait to see what they do in the future. 2022 Holiday Schedule New Year’s Holiday

2022 Annual Benefits Open Enrollment The 2022 Annual Benefits Open Enrollment period will take place from November 1 through November 19, 2021. Open enrollment is your opportunity to make changes to your benefit coverage for 2022. If you are enrolled in the Flexible Spending Plan(s), you must re-enroll for 2022. For all other benefit plans your current coverage will remain the same in 2022 unless you make a change during open enrollment. The open enrollment memo will be sent to you via interoffice mail. A Labwide will be sent outlining the dates and times available to schedule open enrollment assistance with a member of the Benefits office.

DEI Corner Would you like to understand more about implicit and unconscious bias?

If you went through the SHIFTHR training about unconscious bias this year, you may have questions about recognizing, interrupting, and mitigating biases in real-world scenarios. Since 2003, The Kirwan Institute at The Ohio State University has worked with communities to do just that. The Institute has a short series of online modules that feature case studies taken from education settings in U.S. schools. The modules and case studies are designed to give you space to think through when unconscious biases might arise, what their effects might be, and how they might be interrupted to produce different outcomes. You can access the series here. CSHL’s Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) works with divisions and departments throughout campus to ensure CSHL is a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for all.
