AUGUST 2021 EMPLOYEE MAGAZINE NEWS IN GENERAL
Efforts to maintain a safe hospital environment have been implemented throughout the facility due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations throughout Louisiana, St. Landry Parish, and OGHS. Our visitor policy has been updated, and some of our hospital procedures have been changed to keep staff and patients safe. Please make yourself aware of the new changes to better accommodate our patients and guests. As I have expressed before, over 90% of the new COVID cases that we are seeing are of unvaccinated patients. If you have not been vaccinated, please get advice from your medical provider and A WORD FROM OUR CEO Kenneth Cochran, DSc, FACHE President & CEO
encourage others to do so. Getting vaccinated is even more important now and would result in fewer chances for spread. Please use all safety precautions to stay safe both at work and outside of our health system. Please also continue to be mindful of the preparations of our Joint Commission Survey, which we can expect any time now. Remove clutter, maintain performance improvement project initiatives, and keep patient safety and quality of care at the forefront of your objectives.

PHYSICIAN SPOTLIGHT AUGUST 2021 Dr. Carmen Johnson Pediatrician
Where are you originally from? I was born in Savannah, Georgia, but grew up in Plaisance, Louisiana. Why did you choose OGHS? I chose OGHS because I wanted to provide the highest level of quality care to the children and families in my hometown. What is your favorite thing about working at OGHS? My favorite thing about working at OGHS is meeting new families and providing care to the families when they need it the most. I get to take care of my patients from the moment that they are born and if they get sick, I can also take care of them right here in our community. I am able to provide comprehensive pediatric care. What do you enjoy most about being a physician? I love to see the smiling faces of my pediatric patients. Even though they may be afraid in the beginning of their visits, they almost always leave with a smile. And the hugs that they give are the best in the world. What would you like everyone to know about you? I love my community and I am committed to giving my best at all times. What do you like to do in your free time? I love to read fiction and nonfiction novels, try new dessert and entrée recipes, and listen to all genres of music: Jazz, R&B, Country, Zydeco, Reggae, and Soft Rock and Roll.

Diversity Equity Inclusion
This is for you, Lefthanders August 13th is International Lefthander’s Day. Yes, that’s right…a day for those that represent 12% of the population. And while this diversity and inclusion contribution is a little different than others before, we hope you will enjoy being more aware, celebrating your “southpaw” friends and understanding howwe all operate in this this right-handed world. • In the Middle Ages, those that were lefthanded were a bit nervous to be found out as they were linked to being a witch or engaging in witchcraft. • Being dominant is actually hardwired in the womb. But parents typically won’t be able to determine which hand is dominant until around 2 or 3 years of age. • According to a 2008 study, a left-handed person is 23% more likely to be male than female. • Your brain’s right side controls muscles on the left side of your body and largely drives musical and spatial abilities. That may be why left-handers often hold more than their share of slots in creative professions. • Lefthanders are more inclined to choose a left sided choice and associate that with being good or right and the things on the right as being bad or wrong, although everything in the world as we know it is laid out for righthanded thinking. • A study at Northwestern University found that lefthanders are more competitive than their right-handed counterparts—sorry, golfers--less than 4% of you are successful in the PGA. BUT you do make especially good baseball players, tennis players, swimmers, boxers, and fencers. • Anything Lefthanded, a store selling lefthanded items, was invented by William Gruby. One night at dinner, his four lefthanded friends were having a time, bumping elbows while eating as they sat next to their righthanded friends. Anything Lefthanded was sold in the 1980s and it continues to be one of the biggest lefthanded retailers. • Scissors, can openers, zippers on pants, spiral notebooks, binders, buttons on shirts, and credit card machine swipes are all made for right handers. Lefthanders usually have to bring their left hand around and operate the tool. • Famous lefthanders: Albert Einstein, Helen Keller, Oprah Winfrey, Julius Caesar, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jimi Hendrix, Oscar de la Hoya and Leonardo da Vinci…perhaps that is why you have a creative side.
