LOVE AT THE NATURAL SUPPLEMENTS TABLE HOW I MET MY WIFE, DARLENE

On the last night of the show, there was a huge, glitzy party at the Hilton Convention Center. A band was playing, and I was hanging out at the bar when I saw her. We made eye contact, but I didn’t go over. Why? Well, in hindsight I was probably a bit bigger in my britches than I should have been. I was a cool guy, I was in a band … I was used to girls coming up to me! Eventually, though, I broke down and went.

Hey there, friends! Today, I want to interrupt the Oh!mino articles you’ve been getting for the last few months to tell you a love story. Specifically, the story of how I met my incredible wife, Darlene. The year is 1995, and the place is Newport Beach, California. It’s summer, I’m single, and I’m living in an upstairs condo with an ocean view. It’s the prime of my life, and since I’m living in Orange County in the '90s, no one even minds that I have a ponytail. Life was good back then until one day in June when I found out that I had to give up my weekend to go work at a tabletop show in Bloomington, Indiana. I worked for a supplement company called Alacer Corp. at the time, and we had a distributor in Bloomington. So, I went to the show, and there I met a cute girl working over at the 4D Marketing table. I flirted with her a bit and she flirted back. Then, in my cab on the way back to the airport, I realized I never got her number. I could have kicked myself in the head! Luckily, life gave me a second chance. That July, Alacer had a booth at the National Products Association Trade Show in Las Vegas, and while I was walking around the show, I saw the girl again! I went over to talk to her and, thinking I was cool, pulled out the old line, “Hey, do I know you?” She caught on to my BS pretty quickly and said, “Yes, Michael, we just met last month. I’m Darlene.” All weekend, I walked by the table just to flirt with her.

“Don’t you think it’s time we danced?” I asked.

knew she was the one and by 1997, we were married.

“Absolutely,” she said.

We closed the place down, and I walked her back to her room. She gave me a kiss and then sent me away. At least I picked up her phone number this time! Believe it or not, what happened next was actually the most complicated part. Darlene lived in Arizona and I lived in California, so we had a long- distance relationship of intense phone conversations. Then she made it clear that while she’d consider leaving Arizona someday, it wouldn’t be as a girlfriend — it would be as a fiancée or a wife. Little did we know that one year later, she’d do just that. I think our falling in love must have been God’s plan. How else can you explain the fluke of America West airlines offering $37 airfare from California to Phoenix for six months, then $39 airfare for another six? Or the fact that we found each other twice in two random states? A year into our relationship, I

Darlene has been my wife (and my hero) for 23 years now. When I started Oh!Nutrition and then Oh!mino, her support made the whole journey a lot easier. She’s a truly selfless person who always puts other people first, including me and the kids, and I love how funny and goofy she is. She is truly a lifetime of entertainment, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. If you’re not sick of my cheesiness yet, in the next newsletter, I’ll fill you in on what happens next. If you can believe it, things got even more Romeo and Juliet after we got married! We started working for rival natural products companies and, in any other world, would have been at each other’s throats. It’s a story you won’t want to miss.

Stay fit my friends!

–Michael

CROSSFIT TRAINER SONNY MCCLAMROCK SAYS NO IS THE OH!MINO BOOST JUST A PLACEBO EFFECT?

surgery. It took more than a year for him to return to the gym — and that’s when he discovered Oh!mino. Our product’s scientific basis and clean ingredients impressed Sonny, so he decided to give it a try. To boost his recovery, Michael suggested he take five Oh!mino capsules before each workout and five after. “About 30 minutes into a very difficult, competitive CrossFit WOD, I felt just more drive to go harder and faster. It wasn’t like this burst of energy came over me; I just remember halfway through thinking, ‘I can lift a little heavier and do a little bit more,’” Sonny says. At first, Sonny thought this was a placebo effect — then he repeated it over and over with different types of workouts. His results three months in speak for themselves.

Every once in a while, you meet someone who’s not only impressive but also inspiring. Sonny McClamrock is one of those people. As a kid, Sonny wasn’t allowed to play sports because he had a weak heart. The Marines turned him away, so he joined the police force instead. Then, a traumatic event on the job changed the course of his life. “I was chasing after a suspect and they found me rendered unconscious. They ended up resuscitating me and bringing me to the hospital, and that's actually what started my fitness journey. At the time, I was obese and had a sedentary job as a detective. So, I walked into a CrossFit gym and said, ‘I just died last week. I need some help.’” CrossFit was a revelation to Sonny, and thanks to the training, his heart murmur disappeared. He ended up creating a bootcamp for his fellow officers, then left the force to start his own program, T3 Cross Training. Things were going well until an injury last summer forced Sonny to have total knee reconstruction

confident that Oh!mino gave me that edge,” Sonny says.

Sonny started selling Oh!mino at his gym, the Missouri City, Texas, location of Snap Fitness USA. When he tells his clients about the product, this is his message: “It doesn’t matter what fitness level you’re at or what your fitness background is, a product like this that is safe and effective is going to help anybody on any fitness journey.”

“I dropped 8% body fat and had my first six-pack as a 40-year-old. I’m extremely

DOES VITAMIN D HELP OUR BONES AND OUR MUSCLES?

A PREVIOUSLY UNKNOWN BENEFIT OF VITAMIN D

As the weather cools and the days get shorter, we can’t rely as much on the sun for our daily dose of vitamin D. The primary function of vitamin D is regulating the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These nutrients are necessary for strengthening our bones and teeth, which becomes increasingly important as we age and our bones naturally become more brittle. While these benefits of vitamin D are well documented, did you know that getting your daily dose of vitamin D can also contribute to healthier muscles? A few years ago, researchers published a study that seemed to show that vitamin D could potentially help people gain muscle mass. While the research team said their results weren’t conclusive, their findings were certainly interesting. Vitamin D enters the body in an inactive form. It doesn’t become active until it comes in contact with the right enzymes in either the liver or the kidneys. To learn more about what factors affect this vitamin’s rate of absorption and activation in the body, researchers observed the levels of inactive vitamin D in 116 women ages 20–74. What they found was that women with higher muscle mass had lower levels of inactive vitamin D, while women with lower muscle mass had higher levels of inactive vitamin D.

The conclusion researchers drew was that active vitamin D might help optimize muscle strength. While that conclusion is not ironclad, vitamin D’s other well-known benefits still make it worth getting your daily dose. It can aid weight loss, enhance mood, support cardiovascular health, boost the immune system, and strengthen bones, among many other benefits. So, its potential muscle-boosting properties are just another reason to get more vitamin D. To get more of this important vitamin in your diet, try adding salmon, mushrooms, and even canned tuna to your menu. Also, as winter approaches, it might be time to start taking a vitamin D supplement. Whether you’re 20 or 74 years old, it’s never too late to find ways to strengthen your muscles.

HOW TO STOP PROCRASTINATING AT BEDTIME

AND GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP

reminders, so use your phone or journal as a scheduling assistant. However you decide to keep track, make sure to give yourself a set amount of time to accomplish your tasks, like letting yourself watch TV for just one hour or blocking out three hours to help your kids with their homework. It might even help to set alarms on your watch or on your phone to let you know when your time is up on any of your activities. Another big part is creating an environment that is conducive to a good night’s sleep, and that starts with turning your electronic devices off well before you get under the covers. Smartphone screens, computer screens, and even some energy-efficient lightbulbs emit blue light, which reduces the production of melatonin, the hormone that tells your body it’s time to go to bed. Instead of looking at your phone, try reading a book before going to sleep. If your screens prove to be too big of a draw for you when bedtime comes, it might be a good idea to move your devices to another room so they’re out of sight and out of mind. Finally, don’t get discouraged if you don’t start getting better sleep right away. Setting up good bedtime routines takes time. But if you stick with it — and maybe have someone else in your house hold you accountable to your commitments — you’ll start to get better sleep and have more energy to take on the day in no time. CLASSIC PUMPKIN SOUP

Though there are very real medical conditions, such as insomnia and sleep apnea, that deprive people of sleep, the reason most of us probably don’t get enough sleep is simply because we put off our bedtime. Instead of getting into bed, we opt to check off another item on our to-do list or watch another episode of our favorite show. This is sometimes called “bedtime procrastination.” We all know a good night’s sleep is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, so how can we stop putting it off?

A good place to start is by keeping track of your day. The human mind isn’t meant to internalize checklists and task
