Dear Friends, The past year has seen moments of fear, trauma and loss that will stay with all of us. And yet, we also have seen our members rise to unparalleled challenges, serving America’s older adults in new, dynamic and untested ways, with unchartered but life-changing results. ASA is so grateful for this work. We’ve been hearing about how we’re entering the new normal; and we’re glad because the old normal was filled with unconfronted inequities and ignored ageism. A new normal means all of us acknowledging and confronting these challenges and instating a new way of working, caring for each other and aging. As we built the agenda for On Aging 2021—America’s largest multidisciplinary conference in aging—we knew that paramount in this moment in our history had to be the theme of equity. After all, how we recover from this global pandemic will define us for generations to come. This is our moment to rise to the occasion and build stronger, more equitable, more empowering solutions for all of us as we age. We have seen the results of closing our eyes to the systemic racism and inequities that were built into our economic, health, social service and tech systems. And, now, ASA and On Aging 2021 is calling on our members to come together to learn, share resources and develop a new way of working, caring and aging that will take us beyond this moment and into an America in which we all deserve to live. ASA members have long been leaders, and our annual conference has always been a fun, important and special place, where each year, we learned and grew together. This year, that holds particular importance. But please know, as vital as this work is, we also have built in quite a bit of fun. Be on the lookout for cooking classes, workout classes and movie nights. This year’s annual conference is unlike any ASA has ever hosted, but then these historic times call for unprecedented thinking around increasing equity and equalizing justice, ensuring economic security, developing innovations, improving health and well-being and confronting ageism. As always, we turned to our members for their solutions and we can’t wait to convene On Aging 2021, when we will all share these incredible resources as we work toward creating a stronger and better future for all ages. Thank you,
Michael Adams Board Chair

Preparing for On Aging 2021
On Aging 2021 is just around the corner and we know you want to plan how to get the most out of our very full agenda. Because of its virtual setting, we have spread Conference programming across two weeks, with each day offering inspiring plenary events, compelling and practical workshops, and interactive breaks. Here are some tips to begin planning.
1. Block your calendar for the daily keynotes. 2. Select the Summits that are right for you. 3. Select the workshops you plan to attend—there will be more than 175 over the course of two weeks, so have fun and enjoy! 4. Get ready to network and meet people from all across America. 5. Recognize ASA’s constituent group council members on Wednesday, April 7, and congratulate award winners on Friday, April 9. 6. Submit photos and videos to ASA’s Member Recognition Project :
Tip: We are kicking off with our Diversity Summit, which you won’t want to miss, as the theme of On Aging 2021 is Equity. You’ll notice that no other sessions conflict with this program, as we hope all attendees will make time to attend this summit.
The year 2020 was exceptional, and each one of you stepped up to do extraordinary work. We would like to recognize all of our members’ incredibly hard work. Please submit photos and a brief story or description so we can include you, your staff and your amazing experiences in a special presentation!

Positive Self-Functioning in Older Adulthood” highlights how resilience can be fostered in older adulthood and investigates factors that promote resilience. One internal resource for older adult resilience featured in the paper is perceived personality continuity, or how narrating life with a sense of purpose can be adaptive for older adults contending with life challenges.

Award for Excellence in Multicultural Aging Age Friendly Seattle Coffee Hour
For the past 13 years, program coordinator Lenny Orlov has led Age Friendly Seattle Coffee Hours in Seattle neighborhoods to bring community el- ders and city officials together to explore topics such as healthy aging, legal and planning issues. Participants learn about city programming and services and officials hear from older constituents. Attendance has grown in the past year, when the program rebranded from Senior Coffee Hour to

Age-Friendly Seattle Coffee Hour. Orlov intentionally sought out immigrant and refugee older adults via outreach to Russian- and Amharic-speaking (from Ethiopia) communities, as well as offering language interpretation in Khmer, Russian, Vietnamese and Amharic. To accommo- date the new crowd, Orlov live streams the presentation on Facebook, projects it into a nearby room with overflow attendees and distributes via email, YouTube and social media.

Fun, Friends and Fundraising
We know one of the best parts of ASA’s annual in-person Conference was the chance to see and catch up with colleagues and friends from across the country. We have built in a ton of fun networking programs meant to help you do that. At the same time, we’ll be supporting employees of the tourism sector in San Diego. Networking Breaks On April 13–15, we will be holding a daily Networking Break, during which you will be randomly grouped with others at the conference. We all have a story of our dear friend we met in an elevator or hallway at a conference. While we wish we could be in person for that happenstance meeting, we are setting up such networking virtually, to give attendees a chance to meet new people. We can’t wait to hear stories about that dear friend made over a Zoom networking event! Movie Night Join us on Thursday, April 8, at the end of the day for a special viewing of a movie presented by PBS. After the program, stick around for a chance to discuss it with special guests to be announced. Afternoon/Evening Networking Programs Join us at the end of the day for one of two fun networking opportunities built around our new easy access points for connecting with one another throughout the year. Tuesday, April 13: Regionals Networking —get to know fellow members who live and work near you. Wednesday, April 14: CGs, Collaboratives and Peer Group Networking Events —spend some time talking about an area of shared special interest.

We Miss You, San Diego! Cancelling the live event and switching our program to the virtual realm was not an easy decision, as we understand the impact the loss of business has on employees who work in tourism and hospitality. As of September 2020, 50,000 hospitality sector workers in San Diego were either furloughed or had lost their jobs. Join us on Monday, April 12, for a fun night with prizes like three weekends in San Diego including an overnight stay at the Manchester Grand Hyatt San Diego and tickets to sites around the city. Tickets are just $10, and all proceeds will go toward the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank that is serving furloughed hospitality workers. Sign up and learn more . *Note that tickets are not included in your On Aging 2021 registration, as this is a fundraiser for the food pantry. Breaks Remember when you used to get a break between sessions at a conference and you’d quickly send an email, run back to your hotel room or eat a muffin? That was so 2019! We know no one wants to sit in front of a computer all day, so we have built in some engaging, healthy breaks. Silver Sneakers Shorts: Thanks to Silver Sneakers, you can take a 9-minute yoga class, participate in guided meditation, do a quick cardio workout or do some Tai Chi. A dozen different classes will be offered over the two weeks, during most break times. Make Dinner for Your Family or Date Night: There is nothing worse than trying to figure out what to make for dinner after a full day of conferencing. Keep an eye out for our cooking classes that will be available during some breaks on specific days of the conference. By the end of each of these days, dinner will be ready. We’ll email you an ingredient list ahead of time, so you can prepare.
