The Retirement Hobby You Need to Try WES AND AUSTIN ENJOY A CLASSIC SPORT

We have the perfect activity for retirees, families, children, and young adults. Can you guess what it is? It’s an active sport, and you can find places to play it in nearly every city in the U.S. It has even undergone a renaissance of sorts in the last few years, adapting from a seedy, smoky environment to a great place for families, birthday parties, and casual gatherings. It’s also a hobby we have dived completely into in the past few months.

in the past, they are still pretty impressive. You can tell some of them have been bowling for ages; others just picked it up! Either way, they’re having a lot of fun. Before he was born, Austin’s parents were avid bowlers. They owned their own bowling balls and played in a weekly league. Prior to that, Austin’s grandfather was a bowler, too! However, as is common when you have children, Austin’s parents gave up their hobby to raise their family, and until recently, they hadn’t started again. Inspired by Austin’s experience, they are now! They started buying gear in late January, and at the time of writing this, they are in the market for a new ball. Throughout this entire experience, we’ve learned that bowling is an ageless hobby that encourages players of all types. We found a lot of support from Taylor’s Mark Pro Shop at Buffaloe Lanes. Matt Taylor is a professional bowler, but he doesn’t pass judgment or criticism. He does a great job of outfitting new and experienced bowlers with the right equipment to ensure they can enjoy the sport. He’s a helpful local resource for those who want to learn more. And we encourage you to learn more! You don’t have to make bowling a competition, nor do you have to bowl every week. But if you’re looking for a hobby to start in retirement, an event the whole family can enjoy, or a simple, fun way to stay active, bowling can offer that.

Give up? That hobby is bowling!

We know — to some it harkens back to a distant memory of bowling leagues, pints of beer, and healthier wrist joints. For others, it may seem like a quirky hobby reserved for children’s birthday parties and leagues. However, both of these assumptions are wrong! In the months we have immersed ourselves in the bowling world, perfected our craft, and invited our families to join us, we have learned that bowling is for everyone. As mentioned, we began bowling regularly two months ago. We’re both competitive by nature, so any sport that challenges us is going to capture our attention. But as we became more involved, we noticed bowling shared many similarities to another sport we enjoy, golf. Much like in golf, you have a technique you have to master. It’s another way to fuel our competitive spirit when we’re rained out at the golf course or want to bring our families with us.
