Mad About Mangavé ®

+ = Agave

Manfreda

Mangavé

What is a Mangavé? An intergeneric hybrid, Mangave inherits the best of its parents. Agave lends durability and large, architectural form. Manfreda gives unique coloring and spotting, faster growth, as well as softer spines that make them easy to handle.

A succulent that doesn't fear the sun or heat is nothing new. In fact, after their low water requirement, this is what succulents are best known for. Not only will Mangave effortlessly handle sun and heat, but their spectacular colors are best brought out in bright, sunny areas. Without the requisite light, the brilliant spotting and colors will diminish. Returning a Mangave to a sun soaked area will see it soon return to its best form. Sun-sational Performers

Water Warriors

Ready, Set, Grow How fast do Mangave grow compared to other plants?

We think of succulents as drought tolerant, but really they are water

sensitive. Too much water and they rot away, too little and they don't grow. Enter Mangave. This super-sized succulent is much more water tolerant and grows much quicker because of it. Happy with your Mangave at the size it is? Water it sparingly like a normal succulent to slow it down.

A Work in Progress Mangave are a happy accident. The first Mangave was created by unintentional cross pollination and discovered in a batch of Manfreda seedlings. This plant was passed between friends as a unique curiosity, catching the eye of our breeder, Hans Hansen. While we did not invent Mangave and this first hybrid wasn't discovered in our greenhouses, Hans saw the potential of this plant and has devoted significant time and resources to its development. Hans and his team have been working not only with Mangave, but with Agave and Manfreda as well. Working with the parents has helped Hans to develop plants that will pass on favorable and unique characteristics to create the most interesting Mangave varieties. Hans has made thousands of unique crosses to date and has chosen only the most exotic to add to the collection. With each new generation of plants, Hans discovers more characteristics and curiosities to include in future introductions.

Yes, They have Flowers! Although they are thought of as a foliage plant, Mangave will flower. These plants are slow to bloom, but when they do the stalks can be impressive. Acheiving flowers requires long days with high light levels, and even then the temperature must be just right. On the more modest of varieties, the height of the flowers can reach 3-5'. On the larger varieties, they can surpass 10' tall. Pollinators will visit these plants as well. Watch for bees to stop by, and even a hummingbird or two!
