HE’S SO FINED GEORGE HARRISON’S PLAGIARISM SAGA

In November 1970, George Harrison released his first solo single and biggest hit, “My Sweet Lord.” The song shot to No. 1 internationally and achieved the rare feat of bringing religious devotion to the pop charts. Only one problem arose — despite what the record label said, George Harrison didn’t write it. “He’s So Fine” was written by Ronnie Mack and recorded by The Chiffons only seven years earlier. It became a hit in its own right, with Billboard ranking it as the fifth-biggest single of 1963. Though Harrison had dramatically rearranged the song and written new lyrics, the similarities between “He’s So Fine” and “My Sweet Lord” were undeniable to even the casual listener. Despite Harrison’s lyric that “it takes so long,” the song’s owner, Bright Tunes, wasted no time filing a plagiarism lawsuit in February 1971. It also didn’t take Harrison long to realize his mistake. In fact, the “quiet Beatle” later confessed to the similarities in his book “I Me Mine,” asking, “Why didn’t I realize?” Harrison’s manager, Allen Klein, thought he could make the matter go away by throwing money at it. He suggested that the wealthy Harrison buy Bright Tunes so that he would own the rights to both songs. Bright Tunes rejected the offer, and the case went to court. The judge found Harrison guilty I Received a Dementia Diagnosis WHAT LEGAL DOCUMENTS DO I NEED? When you or a loved one receives a dementia diagnosis, it can be difficult to know what to do next. However, creating a plan while in the early stages of a diagnosis will help ensure your future runs as smoothly as possible. Here are important legal documents you need to consider while planning for the future. HEALTH CARE PLANNING This type of planning helps communicate someone’s wishes ahead of time with doctors and health care providers regarding medical treatment. You need to consider two primary documents when you’re health care planning. 1. A living will: If you cannot speak on your own behalf, this document will let doctors know how you want to be treated if you become severely ill, incomprehensible, or permanently unconscious. 2. A medical power of attorney: The individual named will be able to make medical decisions on your behalf if you’re unable to do so.

of “subconscious plagiarism” in 1976 and ordered him to pay lost royalties. But Klein had a ruthless reputation and made an unexpected move. Having been fired

by Harrison in 1973, Klein began pursuing a purchase of Bright Tunes on his own starting around 1975. By 1978, Klein owned the catalog and had effectively switched sides in the case, leaving Harrison stunned. It took several more years of legal wrangling (the case was finally resolved in 1998!), but in 1981, Klein sold Harrison “He’s So Fine” for $587,000. Many experts declared that price to be a steal. Despite the public spectacle, Harrison had few regrets about his copycat hit. “I don’t feel bad or guilty about it,” he wrote in his autobiography. “It saved many a heroin addict’s life. I know the motive behind writing the song in the first place far exceeds the legal hassle.” In fact, the ordeal served as inspiration for his tongue-in-cheek single, “This Song,” released in 1976 — proving that a good artist can find inspiration anywhere.

FINANCIAL PLANNING These documents will communicate your financial wishes. There are three documents that are suggested to be included in your planning.

1.

Will: This document will specify your estate — property, money, other financial assets, care for minors and animals, and end-of-life arrangements.

2. Financial power of attorney: If you cannot make financial decisions yourself, this document will allow you to name someone to make these decisions for you. 3. Living trust: This document will allow you to assign a trustee to hold and distribute your property and funds on your behalf when you can no longer do so.

Long-term care may be needed if symptoms progress. You can also establish whether you want in-home or facility care within these documents.

It can be stressful to create these documents on your own. Luckily, you don’t have to. Allow your friends at Absolute Law Group to assist you. We can help you prepare these documents and add your wishes and preferences. If you’ve already taken steps to prepare legal documents, we can also help you update those documents if needed. This is a stressful period for you and your loved ones. We want to help you in any way we can. We will be with you every step of the way.

WHAT CAUSES STRESS FOR CAREGIVERS? There are several factors at play when it comes to caregiver stress.

• When you’re tending to a loved one who is suffering after an Alzheimer’s or dementia diagnosis, you may feel grief from losing the loved one you once knew. They may forget things like their hobbies, family, and daily tasks. It’s heartbreaking to see someone you love go through these changes. • Extreme mental and physical exhaustion may cause stress because you are tending to someone who may be dealing with behavioral issues like aggression, wandering, and sleep-related problems. • Because you spend the majority of your time caring for your loved one, stress may arise due to isolation and loneliness because you cannot socially interact with others.

TIME FOR A GUT CHECK 5 Ways to Naturally Improve the Health of Your Stomach

If you’ve ever attended an event with older adults, digestion is bound to come up at some point! As we age, our guts sometimes have a difficult time keeping up, causing stomach issues and complications. When people talk about having a “healthy gut,” they are talking about having a good balance of beneficial bacteria and microbes within their digestive tract. Here are some natural ways to keep things healthy and moving along properly: EAT FOODS RICH IN FIBER. Fiber, found naturally in many foods, including sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, fennel, beans, broccoli, berries, and whole grains, stimulates the growth of the good bacteria that keeps your gut performing in a healthy way. Fiber is also a great way to relieve or prevent constipation! GET MOVING. Exercising regularly helps to ensure that everything else in your digestive system moves along regularly too! Research shows that regular exercise promotes the growth of different types of beneficial bacteria within both animal and human digestive systems. REDUCE STRESS LEVELS. Did you know that when you’re stressed out, your mental state is affected as well as your stomach and gut, as they are intimately connected? By keeping your cortisol levels low, you can eliminate and prevent some uncomfortable

gastrointestinal complications. Stress,

research suggests, increases the risk of irritable bowel syndrome, so managing stress can lead to better intestinal health.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

Hydration plays a key role in both softening and bulking up stools, making them easier to pass through the digestive system. It should be noted that liquids that contain caffeine, such as coffee or tea, can actually have the opposite effect on your body. TAKE YOUR PROBIOTICS. Probiotics occur naturally in your gut. They help to reduce adverse symptoms of digestion, such as pain, discomfort, bloating, and gas. Ask your doctor to recommend a beneficial probiotic to incorporate into your daily lifestyle. A healthy gut yields a stronger immune system, comfortable and effective digestion, and an overall better mood! With these tips, you’ll be on your way to a healthier digestive system!
