THE IMPORTANCE OF PRODUCTIVITY For Us and Our Children

Over the last few decades, the way we think about work has dramatically changed. There’s a growing portion of our population that either doesn’t want to work at all or is simply working to one day reach retirement. This is not the greatest way to think about work. Being productive should not be thought of as a hindrance to the rest of our life. Work is a luxury where we can create

things and prove we are valuable members of society. The will to be productive truly starts at an early age.

“Being productive

I grew up in a country where it was common to have maids working inside of your home. I still made an effort to contribute to the household even when we had help. I vacuumed, made my own bed, and did whatever else it took to feel like I was contributing even if it wasn’t necessary. I wanted to help out around the house, and I was never prevented from helping, which was nice.

should not be thought of as a hindrance to the rest of our life.”

my work much more efficient. I’m making an effort to finish the things I start. I’ve found that if you start something and fail to finish it, you’ll be wasting time. If you don’t think you have time to finish the project, then it’s better to not start. Wait until you have the time and persistence so you can fully

I’ve actually taken these lessons and carried them over to my own children. My son was never given things simply because he wanted them. He had to find ways to be productive so he could be rewarded for his productivity. When these lessons are taught early, our kids can see greater success in school and their future work lives. One valuable lesson I have learned is to let our children do what they can to help out. We should make them feel like they are able to help us be more productive. You don’t necessarily have to correct them. If they feel like they tried to help and are told it wasn’t good enough, they’ll stop helping. It’s essential that our kids are allowed to make mistakes so they can learn and grow. Instead of correcting them or telling them they did poorly, provide tips to make the experience better and inform them of that next time; then they can try to do it even better. Learning these lessons early in my life helped me develop my work ethic. I wanted to contribute to society, so as soon as I could get a job, I got one. There was never a point where I didn’t want to work or believed work was unnecessary. I’m now focused on making

complete whatever you start working on.

The unfortunate truth about adopting the mentality of working to reach retirement is that many of us do not have the financial means to retire. Think about it this way: What percentage of each day are you spending at work or doing work? In most cases, more than 50% of our average day is spent working or being productive. So why would you want to look at work in a negative light? Work and productivity do not have to be viewed negatively. If you can flip your perspective and view them positively, you will notice an increase in your happiness before long.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

If you were to ask a group of people what they would want to change about their smile, what do you think the most common response would be? Some may say they wish their teeth were straighter or that they wish their teeth weren’t so sensitive, but the majority would say they wish they had a whiter smile, according to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Our teeth consist of a hollow chamber filled with nerves and blood vessels called the pulp. A hard yellow substance called dentin surrounds the pulp, and enamel (which is the part we see) covers the dentin. Over time, the surface of our teeth can become stained due to our diet. Nearly any dark food or drink can stain our teeth. Our enamel also can become thin and wear away, which is commonly due to drinking acidic beverages. As the enamel wears away, the dentin peeks through, giving our teeth a yellowish appearance. Additionally, our teeth naturally become more yellow over time.

This has led many people to try teeth whitening in an effort to improve their smiles. Most teeth whitening options include an ingredient called hydrogen peroxide, which contains volatile oxygen molecules. As these molecules touch the stains on your teeth,

they break apart the chemical bonds that hold the stains there. This gives them that bleached look so they appear as white as possible. I often have patients ask me when is the best time to whiten their teeth if they’re either beginning or are in the process of orthodontic treatment. I always recommend whitening after orthodontic treatment has been completed. Teeth tend to stain more while in treatment, so if you do a whitening procedure prior, it may not be as effective as you would like.

At our office, we offer take-home whitening using office-grade products. It’s the best option for whitening as it gives you control over how white you want your teeth to look. If you’re interested, ask us about it next time you’re at the office.

When Can My Child Start Orthodontic Treatment?

Parents often come to us wondering when the best time is for their children to start orthodontic treatment. Many people think that because they got braces or started orthodontic treatment as a teen or young adult that they should wait until their kids are that age to take them to an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontics actually recommends that children visit the orthodontist for their first orthodontic examination by age 7. Kids need braces for a variety of reasons. Their baby teeth may have come out too early or late, their teeth may be crowded or misplaced, their teeth could be causing a facial imbalance, and they may have trouble chewing or biting — those are just a few of the many reasons why someone may need braces. As kids’ adult teeth start to come in, many parents become worried they will definitely need braces to correct their appearance, but over time, these issues can disappear on their own. If they continue to remain crooked, or your child is experiencing any of the issues listed above, then it’s probably a good idea to visit an orthodontist. Earlier Than You Might Think

years old, we are able to evaluate their airway, bite, and oral habits. This can help us determine if the child will need braces and when they will potentially need them.

While kids can start getting braces at 7 years old, it really depends on their dental

behaviors. Braces are a big responsibility, and it can make taking care of their dental hygiene more difficult. They need to be ready for that responsibility so their orthodontic treatment can be successful. If you have questions about orthodontic treatment or are wondering if your child is ready to get braces, give our office a call. We’d be happy to schedule an evaluation to get the process started.

During that initial visit, early intervention and evaluation are important to prevent future issues from developing. When a child is around 7
