Saica To Enter U.S. Market In New $72M Facility In OH Zaragoza, Spain based Saica Group (pro- nounced SAY-ka), a major European manufac- turer of recycled paper for corrugated pack- aging, announced that it is establishing its first North American facility in the city of Hamilton, Ohio, near Cincinnati. The company will con- struct a new corrugated manufacturing plant in the City of Hamilton’s Enterprise Park. The announcement was made after the final ap- proval from the Board of Directors that took place two weeks ago. Saica plans to build a state-of-the-art fac- tory and expects to invest nearly $72 million once construction of the corrugated plant is complete. The construction is expected to start in September 2020 and take 18 months to complete. According to Saica Group, the project will create 64 new jobs in Ohio. “Saica Group’s know-how and experience in the production of lighter weight container- board and corrugated packaging will bring high performance packaging and reduced materials use to the U.S. market,” said Ramon Alejandro, Chairman of Saica Group. “Since the beginning, we have been looking at differ- ent locations in the Midwest. offer from the State of Ohio combined with the appealing proposal from the City of Hamilton motivated our decision. JobsOhio, REDI Cincinnati and the City of Hamilton have been key supporting players during this process. We are very excited with this new project and we look forward to the next steps”. As part of its investment, Saica Group plans to build a 350,000 square-foot facility that will eventually house 64 new employees. The site is in the Hamilton Enterprise Park, owned by the City of Hamilton and dedicated to at- tracting new manufacturing operations to the city. The jobs created at the site will consist of 27 skilled operators, 15 manufacturing, engineering and supply chain profession- als, 13 sales staff and nine office and management jobs. “Saica is well known throughout Europe as a company with an environmentally conscious approach to business, something that the City of Hamilton also prides itself on. This company will pay homage to Hamilton’s rich history of paper manufacturing while also diversifying our business community,” said Jody Gunderson, Director of Economic Development for the City of Hamilton. When Saica Group started planning its entry into North America, it immediately began considering sites in the Midwest due to the experience and talent of the work- force, the concentration of manufacturing and proximity to potential clients.

McKinley Paper Acquires U.S. Corrugated Inc.

McKinley Paper Co., a subsidiary of Mexico based Bio Pappel, has acquired Washington, Pennsylvania based U.S. Corrugated Inc. McKinley also acquired U.S. Corru- gated’s subsidiaries and affiliated companies. U.S. Corrugated, an independent corrugated packag- ing producer, will join forces with McKinley Paper’s busi- ness to create a fully integrated paper and packaging company with a vertically aligned network of paper mills, box plants, sheet plants and a distribution network in the United States and maquiladora region in Mexico. McKinley Paper operates two paper mills, one in Pre- witt, New Mexico, and one in the state of Washington. U.S. Corrugated is part of a fully integrated packaging company that operates a network of corrugated plants in Southern California, Georgia, Indiana and a planned northeastern expansion. The organization also includes an Alpha-Box Plant in Mexicali and a full-service sheet plant in Tijuana, Mexico, near the U.S.-Mexican border. “The personal and professional relationship I have enjoyed over the past 25 years with Bio Pappel’s CEO Miguel Rincon and his family served as the impetus for this strategic alliance, which will allow U.S. Corrugated to become a fully integrated paper and packaging compa- ny,” said Dennis Mehiel, U.S. Corrugated founder.

40 ft of paper travel from preheater to hot plates 3 seconds of heat, glue and bonding 1 chance to get it right! the ZONE

Design & Production

Chicago Electric offers 10 technology solutions to control ‘the Zone’ CORRUGATOR Sectoral preheating plate

Our sectoral preheating plates provide direct heat by means of a double steam circuit, allowing for efficient heating in hard-to-access locations, as well as to act as a steam shower to open the paper’s fibre, making it receptive to absorbing the heat and the glue.

This translates into increased speed and improved quality of the cardboard sheet finish.

The system’s main advantages are as follows:

• The plate may only be used to heat, only to humidify, or both options at the same time. • The plate is sectored, which allows for applying humidity to the sections. • It provides temperature in previously inaccessible locations and near the location needed. • It compensates the loss of temperature dissipated due to distance, speed or limitations of the exiting preheaters. • Quick transferring of heat to the paper. • The combination of the hot plate and steam shower allows for providing heat even to the hardest papers to heat. • Does not dry out the paper. • Possibility of operating as a humidifier and pre-conditioner. • Maintains and improves the fibre’s elasticity. • Acts according to the operator’s needs. • Facilitates the paper’s hygroscopy to absorb the glue and improve rubberising.

calibrations and settings. Bar systems avoid this, but compensate this with the risk of exces- sive glue application. The system contains many wearing parts. Solution The contact roll combines the ad antage of both systems and ensures minimum contact between board and applicator roll. The system uses small pneumatic cylinders in order to achieve a “soft touch.”

6. Gap Control 7. Curved Plate 8. Roller Shoe Press When it comes to a short-term increas of web tension, spring loaded systems with shoes or airpressure activated system have problems in compensating these. The system is lifted for a short time. This may result in de-lamination and in the ‘double kiss’ effect. Solution For a defined and exact bonding point of the web fiv weight rollers will be installed usually over the first flat hotplate of the heating section. The rolls are mounted into a frame, which is actuated by means of two pneumatic cylinders. P oductivity Issu —Double Kiss Bonding

Web is in contact to less flute tips compared to bar systems. • High precision glue application • Less moisture applied to web —No wear of shoes and springs —No adjustment of shoes or paper gap —Uniform glue application over entire working width for all flutes by use of pneumatic cylinders instead of springs — Less contamination by paper dust and glue remains —No jam of board because of web breaks caused by splice joints going through 630-784-0800 Benefits —Rollers secure exact defined first point of contact of liner and single-faced board - No double kiss —Frame design avoids unintended lifting of roller shoe (compared to spring or air loaded systems) - No double kiss —Pressure can be increased or released for special grades or products 490 Tower Blvd., Carol Stream, IL Contact Chicago Electric to GET IT RIGHT 630-784-0800 [email protected] chicagoelectric.com Solution The ProPress system ensures an optimum heat transfer to the board. It offers a wide range of set- tings. The loadi g pressure can be varied, the number of shoes can be lifted in accordance t the line speed. The outer shoes can be lifted in accordance to the paper width. The shoe bars will be delivered pre-assembled for a short installation time. —Liftable for easy paper infeed and for cleaning of the machine —Position adjustable in paper direction to avoid grooves in hotplate Press Productivity Issue—Poor Heat Transfer Rollers are usually limiting the heat transfer, since they often have contact mainly on the edges of the plates due to wear or bent plates. They also cause often loss of caliper and bearing need to be replaced frequently. Airpressure actuated systems can only supply a limited pressure and have com- pared to shoe systems a closed surface. Pressure Shoe

Plate vity Issue—Poor Heat Control l hotplates are slow to react to pressure due to high steam volume and massive y also have high heat radiation and heat profile. Worn plates can damage crease edge crush.

Southern Carton Joins Amazon Packaging Support Supplier Network Nashville, Tennessee based Southern Carton Company, a manufacturer of packaging materials and solutions, an- nounced that it is now a certified member of the Amazon Packaging Support and Supplier (APASS) network. “As a member of the APASS network, we will be able to help companies who sell through Amazon, design and develop e-commerce packaging that will reduce costs, minimize chargebacks and optimize their customers’ ex- perience,” said Scott Fray, Vice President of Sales. “Our team is focused on helping customers navigate the world of e-commerce packaging, including the Amazon channel, and our APASS membership reaffirms our commitment to their ongoing success.” Amazon launched the APASS program in 2018 to sup- port vendors, sellers, and manufacturers in certifying their products as Prep-Free Packaging (PFP), Ships-in-Own Container (SIOC) and Frustration-Free Packaging (FFP). These certification guidelines for packaging help reduce packing times, packaging waste, risk of damage, and diffi- cult unboxing experiences. “For more than 40 years, Southern Carton has evolved to meet customer demand at every stage of the supply chain by providing expert design and engineered busi- ness solutions,” said Connor Kennedy, third-generation

Manager at Southern Carton. “By aligning our approach with Amazon’s guidelines, we become a partner in the solutions that will advance and sustain our customers for years to come.” Fosber America, DPi Inc. Collaborate On Inline Digital Print Solution Bryan Bell, President of DPi Incorporated and Jeff Pallini, President of Fosber America, Inc. have announced their new collaboration. Fosber America manufacturers com- plete corrugators for the North American market and DPi offers inline digital printing solutions for corrugator lines. Fosber and DPi have been working together at a Mid- western box plant to perfect the inline, high-speed digital print solution. This led to a long-term distribution agree- ment, which now combines the DPi printing expertise with the Fosber corrugator and services experience. “We are very excited about working with DPi,” said Pal- lini. “The first time we met Bryan Bell and Stuart Brownell we hit it off. They have a history of successful inline digital printing. Their know-how in combination with our under- standing of the corrugator and ability to install and service the equipment long-term is a winning combination.” “We are very excited to team up with Fosber and bring digital printing to their corrugator,” said Bell. “We worked together very well to fine-tune the application.”
