Converters Weigh Benefits: Litho Labeling Versus Digital BY REBECCA RENDON

Welch Packaging Acquires Excel Display & Packaging Elkhart, Indiana based Welch Packaging, a multi-site family-owned business concen- trated in the Midwest, has acquired Aurora, Illinois based Excel Display and Packaging, a supplier of retail packaging, displays, and food packaging, along with digital print ca- pabilities. Excel was formerly a unit of Geor- gia-Pacific. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Excel’s product offerings include corrugat- ed boxes, displays and design services, as well as digital print expertise. Acquiring Excel expands Welch Packaging’s capacity and ca- pabilities in the greater Chicago area. Welch has had operations in the Chicago area since 1994. With operations already located in six Midwestern states, this acquisition reinforces Welch’s commitment to serve new customers and expand its cause with new associates. “Excel has a solid reputation with custom- ers as a provider of retail packaging, displays and food packaging to some of the most icon- ic brands in their respective categories,” said Scott Welch, CEO of Welch Packaging. “In ad- dition, Excel brings digital print capability and expertise to the Welch family of businesses.

When digital printing innovation was introduced to the corrugated in- dustry, many admitted to thinking that it would replace litho labeling altogether. As time goes on, however, converters are finding that dig- ital print isn’t the slam dunk replacement for litho printing that many

thought it would be. Instead, they are proving to be complementary processes that expand capabilities for box plants. Jerry Frisch, owner of Wasatch Container, explains that he was one of those who, at one point, thought digital printing would eliminate the need for labelers. “I went to the AICC digital packaging seminar last year and so many of us came away from that thinking digital printing would take label business off the map, but what I learned was that digital printing is just another method of printing. It’s not an ‘either or.’ Labels will always be the ‘go-to’ for those high-quality graphics, but digital is enhanc- ing the ability to graphically print quickly. Digital printing is helping to grow our e-commerce busi- ness and produce a box that someone is excited to open.” Frisch went on to say that using the two solutions helps to diversify his product offering to customers. “Digital printing brings a lot of versatility to the market. It allows Jerry Frisch Litho labeling has not been replaced by digital printing and according to converters, continues to be a profitable and efficient revenue producer.

To Test Or Not To Test: Taking Temps And Antibody Testing For COVID-19 BY JOEL GREENWALD As many businesses are preparing to reopen their doors, employers are increasingly considering COVID-19 test-

ing as a strategy to try to keep their employees safe from exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace. Employee testing promises the alluring notion that with the right tests, employers can correctly identi- fy individuals “safe” enough to allow back to work and exclude those who

pose a health risk to themselves and to others. Also ap- pealing is the new notion of issuing “immunity passports” to employees who test positive for COVID-19 antibodies. For public-facing companies especially, the ability to ad- vertise that one’s workforce is “immune” could be a selling point. The unfortunate reality is that employee testing may be logistically and legally complicated, and can come with numerous risks to employers. Because serious questions surround COVID-19 tests’ current efficacy, accuracy and re- liability, important personnel decisions could be made on flawed or incomplete information. Also, requiring employ- CONTINUED ON PAGE 32
