day was when a school teacher, BJ Cigrand, had his students celebrate June 14 as the flag’s birthday around the 1880s. This day was chosen because it’s the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777. From there, the celebration grew more and more popular within schools, as teachers encouraged their students to observe Flag Day as the “birth” of the flag. Then, around 1893, the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America sent a request to their mayor, many different authoritative figures, and everyone in the city to hang the flag on their homes, business, and any important buildings. Later, New York’s governor directed that the flag be hung from all public buildings on June 14. Then, Woodrow Wilson gave a Proclamation about Flag day around 1916, right before it became a national holiday. When it comes to celebrating patriotic holidays, there’s nothing I enjoy more than grilling for friends and family. I’ve been grilling for a long time and really love it — I’ve been known to dig a path through the snow to get to my grill. Celebrate Flag Day this year by heading to the parade and enjoying some good old-time Americana. Wave the flag and meet other people celebrating like you are. And if you haven’t already, it’s a great time to bring out the grill. –Neil Crowley

Most people don’t give Flag Day a second glance when it comes around. The Fourth of July usually takes all the attention when anyone thinks of a patriotic holiday. But in Dedham, Flag Day is a big deal. Dedham has an old-time parade on Flag Day and it’ll bring you back to your youth. The poles in Dedham Square and the parade route are adorned with flags. The parade starts at 6 p.m. on June 14 and winds from the Middle School to Memorial Park. This year will be the 51st edition of the parade, and they’ve got it down. There are loads of floats, drum corps, unicycles, antique cars, and music along the parade route. The WROR Street Team will join the fun and

One tradition of the Dedham Flag Day Parade that kids love is that the participants give out candy to the kids along the parade route — lots of candy. It gets handed out and thrown to the crowd. One year, my girls volunteered for the parade, and they made sure all of the kids got plenty of treats. Flag Day became an official holiday on August 3, 1949 by President Truman, who signed an act of Congress that designated June 14 be National Flag Day. The first recorded celebration of Flag

This Father’s Day, thousands of dads will receive a “No. 1 Dad” mug to sip coffee out of at the office. But the following dads took that “No. 1” to a new level. Brian Munn gave his son a liver transplant. When doctors discovered that baby Caleb Munn had a rare disease called biliary atresia, they told his parents that he was unlikely to survive past age 2 without a liver transplant. Luckily, his father was a perfect match, and he eagerly donated part of his liver in March of 2015 to save his son’s life. Greg Alexander battled a bear for his son’s life. While camping in the backcountry of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Greg Alexander was

startled awake at dawn by the screams of his 16-year-old son, Gabriel. He rushed out of his hammock to see a black bear dragging his son away by the head. Without hesitation, he kicked the beast in the side, and when that didn’t work, he leapt onto its back and started punching it in the face. When the bear finally released Gabriel, Greg threw rocks until it fled. His son was hurt, but made a full recovery in the hospital over the coming weeks. Artur Magomedov saved his daughters from ISIS. Artur Magomedov was devastated to discover that his wife had taken his 3- and 10-year-old daughters from their home in Dagestan under the

cover of night, flown to Turkey, and crossed into Syria to join ISIS. But he resolved to get his kids back. After a long, hazardous journey, he arrived in Tabqa to embrace his two daughters. To leave the caliphate — under penalty of death — they hitched a ride to the border one night and crawled along a railway line until they were within 70 meters of the border. Then they ran under fire from Turkish border guards until they could scramble into tall grasses. After some help from the Russian consulate in Istanbul, they made it back home, together again and safe.
