AUGUST 2020

THE COOL CATS OF COOL RENEW MED SPA Have You Met Our Clinic’s Unofficial Mascots?

E ven though August might be known as the dog days of summer, Aug. 8 is still International Cat Day, and we have more reason to celebrate cats than dogs at Cool Renew Med Spa. In fact, we have three reasons to celebrate International Cat Day to be exact, and their names are Junior, Rocky, and Rascal. Junior, Rocky, and Rascal are our spa’s pet cats. We found them wandering around the Med Spa at different times over the course of a few years, and after setting out some food and water for them, they never left. You might have seen them before when you’ve come in for an appointment. Some of our patients have even requested they be present when they come into the Med Spa. Over the years they’ve lived here, the cats have grown to be our unofficial mascots and members of the Cool Renew Med Spa family. Sometimes, it feels like they basically run the place. Junior was the first cat we took in back in 2009. We noticed him hanging out nearby, and after we gave him some food and water, he just walked right into our clinic and never left.

around the office, maybe decides he wants to nibble on a plant, and then perhaps gives you the time of day. Their different personalities notwithstanding, we love having our feline friends around, and so do many of our patients. Over the years, they’ve kind of evolved into therapy animals. There’s just something about having a kitty cat purring in your lap that relaxes you before undergoing treatment. That said, I do want to make sure everyone knows that our cats don’t have to be in the lobby if you don’t want them to be there. We know some of our patients are allergic to cats, and others just don’t like them, so they’ll only be in the lobby if you request they be there when you come in for an appointment. So, if you didn’t know about the Med Spa’s cats until now and you want to make sure they’re present the next time you’re here, just let us know. Junior, Rocky, and Rascal would all love the attention.

Out of our three cats, Junior is the most uncatlike. While most cats are aloof and don’t seem to care too much about human contact, Junior loves people and attention. He’s basically like a dog, which means that even people who don’t really like cats usually like Junior. Among our three cats, he is the king of the Med Spa. Rocky, who joined us off the street in 2010, is pretty friendly as well but a little bit more hesitant to jump into people’s laps. Once he warms up to you, he’s really sweet. Rascal, on the other hand, has always been a bit of a free spirit since he came into the office in 2011. He just kind of runs “Over the years, they’ve kind of evolved into therapy animals. There’s just something about having a kitty cat purring in your lap that relaxes you before undergoing treatment.”

Deal With Your Emotions in a Healthier Way COPING STRATEGIES VS. COPING MECHANISMS

COPING STRATEGIES VS. MECHANISMS Turning to coping mechanisms is a habit you may have learned as a kid. It’s understandable, and it’s okay. But instead, you want to focus on coping strategies that help you work through challenging emotions and find calm again.

What do you do when you feel anxious, sad, or stressed? Do you reach for your phone to scroll through Instagram? Do you turn to a Snickers bar for comfort? Maybe an episode of “Parks and Recreation” is your go-to form of relief. If you use any of these methods, you’re not alone. When humans face difficult situations, they often turn to coping mechanisms to numb emotions and help themselves feel better in the moment. Emotional development expert Alyssa Blask Campbell identifies many common coping mechanisms, including engaging in screen time, making to-do lists, seeking information, indulging in alcohol or cigarettes, and asserting control where possible. Coping mechanisms make you feel better in the moment, but they don’t always help process and deal with emotions in the long run.

Because the way you react when your emotions overwhelm you has an impact on the way you feel during and after that experience, it’s all the more important to understand the different coping tools at your disposal.

As you learn to incorporate coping strategies into your life and call on them when you’re dealing

Coping strategies are things like breathing exercises, talk therapy, journaling, reading, and physical movement like dancing. While these may take more time to yield results than a TV program or candy bar, tapping into these strategies helps you feel better and process what you’re going through, which allows you to release whatever is causing you strife.

with hard emotions, give yourself grace. You can still turn to healthy coping mechanisms when you need them. The key is to also incorporate some of these strategies to

help you better process whatever comes your way.

Forget the Regular Facial

WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER OUR HYDRAFACIAL TREATMENT

At Cool Renew Med Spa, we know that periodic facials are a staple of many of our patients’ beauty care routines. And while we don’t offer traditional facials here at the Med Spa, we offer something even better: HydraFacial treatment. This treatment outperforms any regular facial you can get somewhere else for several reasons, so whether you’re in the market for a new facial treatment or not, you may want to read on. The HydraFacial treatment uses a unique vortex delivery system to give you clean, glowing skin in just three simple steps. First, it cleanses and uncovers a new layer of skin with gentle exfoliation. Then, it extracts debris from your pores and hydrates your skin with moisturizers. Finally, it saturates your skin with antioxidants and peptides to enhance your skin’s glow and protect it immediately after the procedure. All in all, this treatment takes around 30 minutes. This procedure is superior to a regular facial in a few key ways. First, while many facials include a dermabrasion process that can be somewhat uncomfortable, the hydradermabrasion process feels more like a gentle massage then getting blasted in the face by grit. Second, the experience and results are not as dependent on technician proficiency, which means

you can expect the same incredible glow every time. Finally, it works on all types of skin and at any age. Whether you’re a young person still struggling with acne or you’re trying to minimize increasingly prominent wrinkles, HydraFacial is the treatment for you. The next time you’re in need of a facial, we hope you’ll consider the HydraFacial treatment available at Cool Renew Med Spa. We want you to be the best version of yourself you can be, so give us a call today at 814- 347-8314 to learn more.

3 Ways to Recycle Clothing In a market dominated by fast fashion, many articles of clothing find their way to the landfill almost as quickly as they found their way to store shelves. Every year, Americans throw out 15 million tons of used textile waste, and only around 13% is recycled for other uses. Along with being wasteful, throwing out old clothes also contributes to global warming, as some materials emit methane and other harmful greenhouse gases, and some dyes can leach toxic chemicals into the soil.

Resell Them If you have designer-brand or otherwise nice clothes that you no longer want, sometimes you can sell them online or to a consignment store. Consignment stores often give you the option to take your cut in cash, a percentage of the sale price, or in-store credit. While eBay is one of the best-known sites for reselling clothes, a number of other websites, including Poshmark, thredUP, and Shopify, have also become more prominent in recent years. Reimagine Them This has the potential to be the most fun option for recycling clothes. Faded old shirts can become pajama tops, old skirts can become aprons, and ripped up shirts can become cleaning rags. At the same time, you can find DIY projects for reusing just about any article of clothing on YouTube, Pinterest, and other websites. None of these ideas are new or revolutionary, but they can be fun and making them habits can save the planet. What’s in your closet that you could donate, resell, or reimagine?

Fortunately, however, there are some fun, eco- friendly ways to reuse or recycle old clothes that you no longer want that don’t involve just throwing them in the trash. Here are a few ideas. Donate Them This is probably the most tried-and-true method of recycling old clothes. When you donate your clothes, they get a second life with a new owner who might have otherwise bought something new from a department store. Donating your clothes also keeps them out of the landfills, either for a little bit longer or for good.

The Historic Roots of Modern Hair Accessories

THE ROOTS OF MODERN HAIR ACCESSORIES Where Your Favorite Hair Adornments Came From

Chances are you’ve either reached for an elastic hair tie recently or have noticed someone else do so to pull their hair back and combat the summer heat. But you’ve probably never wondered about the history behind this small hair tool. Nearly every popular hair accessory today has a long, rich background that transcends continents, nations, and cultures. Here are the roots of four ways humans have kept their hair at bay for millennia. ELASTIC BANDS While elastic rubber hasn’t been around for long in the world of hair care, plenty of ancient precursors served the same purpose as modern-day hair ties and scrunchies. Bronze Age Europeans made hair rings out of precious

origins date back much further than that. Both men and women in ancient Mesopotamia, China, and Mexico wore headbands. The bands were initially made of metal like ancient hair ties, but eventually, people everywhere adopted cloth as it became available. HAIR BEADS Adorning hair with beads has been a cultural practice in West Africa for hundreds of years before it made its way all over the world. Typically, women — and sometimes men — use beads to accentuate their twists, braids, and cornrows, and placement of the accessories can take hours to get right. Beads may not keep hair secure in the same way as ties or bands, but their wide use is steeped in rich cultural significance that can’t be ignored. HAIR STICKS Native American tribes and East Asian cultures originated the use of hair forks and sticks long before the accessories entered mainstream culture. Native American hair sticks are made of many materials and often elaborately decorated. Well into the 20th century, Japanese women wore highly stylized kogai , part of a sword mounting, to symbolize their social status.

metals, and ancient Egyptians made them from other materials like alabaster and jasper. If you think these hair rings sound a little clunky, you’re right, but they did the trick thousands of years before the advent of rubber bands.

HEADBANDS You might guess that today’s headbands take some inspiration from the flapper girls of the 1920s, and while that might be true, their
