OUR FIRM IS TURNING 5! LOOK HOWFARWE’VE COME

FINDING GRATITUDE IN UNEXPECTED PLA

I can’t believe it: On May 1, Emery Law Office will turn 5 years old!

I couldn't wait that long — I was giving my notice on Saturday morning.

during the day, study late at night, and drive up to Michigan every weekend for school. It was an exhausting, exciting time in my life — and good preparation for being a business owner. I opened my own firm because I wanted to create a place with absolutely fantastic office culture. Now I get to find and hire amazing people, and put my managing and marketing skills to work. It’s pretty cool to pick who I hang out with all day! My original staff has moved on now, but sometimes the people who get you to where you are aren’t the same ones who will take you on the next leg of your journey. The team I have in place right now is the strongest, smartest group I’ve ever had. Every day, I wake up excited to come to work and be with them all day long. Hard work and passion helped me get out of my hidey-hole on Outer Loop and into the beautiful office we have today in Kaden Tower. But I never could have made it five years without my team, clients, and referral partners. We have big goals for the future (including adding immigration law to our practice), and your referrals help make them happen. To keep us growing, send your referrals to Info@ emerylawoffice.com or call 502-771-1529 .

It feels like I was just haggling over our first office space yesterday. It was a little house on Outer Loop occupied by another business. I didn’t know anything about leasing an office, so I asked Dave to meet me there on a Wednesday afternoon. We did one walk-through and I told the landlord, “Great, I’ll take it! I’d like to move in on Saturday.” He looked at me like I was a crazy person. “We can’t have this ready by Saturday!” he said. “We need at least two weeks!”

“How about Monday?” I asked. “I can work from home over the weekend, and if you can give me one little office, just a little hidey-hole, that’s all the space I need.” Somehowmy last-minute decision worked out. They gave me one office, and I paid prorated rent for the first fewmonths while the other business moved out. I used the pennies I saved to slowly buy all of the furniture, from the desks to the wall hangings. There was plenty of space for a one woman show. A few years later, our team was so big that we were practically working on top of each other. Now, we’re celebrating our five-year anniversary in our big, beautiful office in Kaden Tower! The truth is I’ve always been a little entrepreneurial. Even when I was working in real estate in St. Louis, a big part of the job was pounding the pavement and developing relationships on my own. But the pens, pencils, and coffee mugs I handed out back then didn’t have my name on them. Emery Law Office was the first business I could really call mine. It feels right that our five-year anniversary is the first day of National Small Business Week (for more on that, turn to Pg. 2). At 5, Emery Law Office is the same age my oldest daughter was when I started commuting three states away for law school on the weekends. I can still remember how it felt to watch the babies

With your help, we’ll be able to keep fighting for the little guy for another five years!

MAKE A WREATH FOR ANY OCCASION With These 3 Materials

Since the 16th century, wreaths have been a staple holiday decor item that people once made from the fallen branches of a Christmas tree. In more recent history, folks travel to the local hardware/home decor store to pick up a wreath for their door during the holiday season. However, it seems as though wreaths are gaining popularity beyond just the winter holidays. Whether it’s to celebrate your favorite sports organization or the changing of the seasons, you can make a wreath to recognize the occasion. From Facebook Marketplace to specialty boutique shops, there are plenty of places to purchase a customizable wreath, but what if you want to make your own? With a certain level of flair and creativity, anyone can create their own wreath. You just need to figure out which material works best as your base. Wire If you’re looking to make a wreath that’s long-lasting and durable enough to handle any type of weather, look no further than a wire-base wreath. Wire bases are available in various sizes and levels of thickness, so you can make almost any design. If you want your wreath to look dainty, you should use a

single-wire frame, but if you want your wreath to look full and bountiful, use a double-wire instead.

Grapevine Grapevine bases are the best if you want your wreath to look traditional or natural. They’re usually made of entwined bundles of grapevines or twigs to look like they came straight from the earth. Grapevine bases are cost- efficient and are the perfect option for anyone looking to create a classic- looking wreath. Styrofoam A Styrofoam wreath may not have the elegance of a wire one or the traditional style of the grapevine wreath, but it is the perfect option for bold designs. You can get a Styrofoam base at any home decor store and spray- paint it in the color scheme of your final creation. You can then place yarn and other decorations to bring your wreath to life. Since Styrofoam is lightweight, the items you place on the wreath will also need to be lightweight or the wreath will fall apart.

knowledge from the employees at the big-box stores. So many of our hardware needs can be satisfied at this local hardware store. Also, I know the owner, and the fact that he worked there as a teen, and then later in life purchased the store and runs it with his family, makes him a treasure!

CLEAN UP YOUR PASSWORD MESS OUR TOP TIP FOR SECURE, UNFORGETTABLE PASSWORDS Be honest: How many passwords do you have, and how do you keep track of them? If you use the same password across multiple accounts and/or write them all down in a little black book, consider this article an intervention. Your password habits are putting your personal information in danger. According to a 2020 report from SecureAuth, more than 53% of people use the same password across multiple accounts. Most of them repeat the same password 3–7 times, but some people use the same password for as many as 10 accounts! This is totally understandable. It’s fatiguing to remember a dozen different passwords, and you lose time looking them up. But password repetition is also dangerous. Deep down, you already know why: If someone gets into one of your accounts, none of them are safe. Anybody who steals your little black book will be able to access everything from your bank accounts to your Netflix subscription. Fortunately, there’s one easy thing you can do to make sure you have unique, unforgettable passwords for all of your accounts: Invest in a password manager. A password manager is a piece of software that will help you create random, complex passwords. It will also store all of your passwords in one online “vault” protected by a master password. After you download your password manager, that master password is the only key you’ll need to remember! Most password managers are browser extensions, which means they work across multiple devices. If you use Google Chrome, for example, your password manager will remember your password for Facebook whether you’re logging in on your smartphone or your laptop. The best password managers — like Keeper, LastPass, and Password Boss — cost a few dollars a month for all of the key features, but there are also free options like Zoho. Either way, the peace of mind is worth the cost. You won’t have to worry about identity theft or your grumpy teenager stealing your password book and writing “I’m the worst mom ever” on your Facebook wall.

REMEMBERING THE SPACE RACE 4

AMERICA’S JOURNEY TO ORBIT EARTH THE FIRST AMERICAN IN SPACE

On May 5, 1961, Alan B. Shepard became the first American to enter space on a Mercury capsule named Freedom 7. It was an incredibly momentous event, but what all had to occur for it to even happen? Let’s take a look at what led up to Shepard’s launch into space. During the 1960s, the U.S. and the Soviet Union found themselves in a space race. The United States first began their space mission in 1958 with Project Mercury. Project Mercury had three goals in mind: orbiting a crewed spacecraft, investigating the ability to function in space, and safely recovering the spacecraft and the crew. Before the first American took flight, the U.S. conducted several test launches to see what they needed to adjust and modify to be safely launched into space. The first successful launch of Mercury without an astronaut occurred in December 1960.

But before they attempted to launch an American into space, NASA tested the Mercury capsule in January 1961 with a chimpanzee named Ham, who took a route that was similar to the one Shepard would eventually take. After going through numerous simulations, NASA decided that Shepard would be making the first flight. He began his mission on May 5 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, and over half a million Americans watched the launch on nearby beaches. Shepard took his orbit around the Earth and made a successful return. He then received NASA’s highest reward, the Distinguished Service Medal, from President John F. Kennedy on May 8, 1961.

Although the Soviet Union sent the first human into orbit in April 1961, this didn’t stop the U.S. from pushing forward. Instead, the bravery of these men inspired the U.S. to go to new heights and have the first man on the moon in 1969. There are still ongoing debates about whether the U.S. or the USSR won the space race. Either way, this race allowed the world to conduct more research on our galaxy. As a whole, this event led to tremendous efforts to push the limits of human capabilities, create new technology to explore outer space, and see what our universe holds.
