As we enter this Spring season, we all carry high hopes for reuniting with family and friends, planning travel and returning to a more normal state. Despite everyone’s sights on the future, our new reality places increased importance on the spaces in which we live and work. For many, those have been one in the same for the last 12 months. The remodeling scene in New Jersey has been fast paced since Summer 2020—with home purchases and remodeling projects fueling huge interest in building materials in general, but specifically decorative plumbing, cabinetry and lighting. Previously neglected kitchens and baths became focal points of homes with increased hours of occupancy. Homeowners are looking to add value, function and design to their everyday spaces. Our GPS Showrooms and Kohler Signature Stores in New Jersey have been open and operating throughout the entirety of the last year in order to serve our trade and consumer customers with everything needed to meet their projects’ needs. We have continued to see an industry focusing on measured smart technology and filtration/ purification. The bathroom and kitchen spaces have been somewhat slower to adopt tech than other areas of the home, but these advancements are now arriving on the scene quickly. More people are focusing on whole home air/water purification and filtration with more mindfulness about what our families breathe and drink. Elkay Liv (seen on page 22) is a beautiful water filtration system, integrated into your living space as you would have previously expected in a traditional commercial application— now set to meet the form and style of the home. Each of the showroom consultants featured in this issue (highlighted on page 26 and page 7 of the Kohler side of the magazine) understand the current needs of our customers with eyes on the newest products to hit the market. Flip over to the Kohler side and readers will see a project showcase featuring Kallista’s Central Park West collection, inspired by New York City (page 8) as well as the Kips Bay Dallas Showhouse featuring a wide range of Kohler products (page 14). Inspiration is provided by the new Ann Sacks Pambiche, featured here and showcased in our Kohler Signature Stores in Paramus and Eatontown. Robern’s line of mirrored storage (page 12) is a great source of style and organizational function for any master bath design. Lastly, one of the features in this issue highlights Restaurant Serenade in Chatham, NJ (page 26), a favorite of my wife and I, and the place where we had a great outdoor dining experience to celebrate our anniversary last year. This is just a reminder to all of us to support our local businesses, especially our restaurants. This past year has not been easy for any of us, but your local businesses appreciate your business—I know that we do. Hope that you and your families are safe, and here’s to the brighter days to come.

For pots, pans, and prized possessions. That’s

Even as it adapts to recent restrictions, Restaurant Serenade keeps its seasonal cuisine flourishing. Tastes of the Season T he town of Chatham, New Jersey boasts an attractive downtown area with tree-lined streets and, nestled among a group of historic shops, Restaurant Serenade. It was about 30 miles away, in the kitchen of The Ryland Inn, that Serenade’s Chef James Laird—whom the New York Times called “one of the best classically trained chefs in New Jersey”—met future wife Nancy. “My husband and I wanted to create our own restaurant,” Nancy says, explaining that James felt it was “time to run his own show and be able to cook his own food.” “We wanted to create a restaurant with service that was correct-but-comfortable and served food made with the finest ingredients possible,” Nancy continues, noting that her husband was influenced by chefs with whom he’d worked in France (Alan Pic, Georges Blanc) and the United States (David Burke, Charlie Palmer). Meanwhile, Nancy’s aim was to create an atmosphere reminiscent of NYC restaurants such as Aureole or Gotham Bar and Grill. The result is Restaurant Serenade, where guests enter into an area with a large ma- hogany bar and a fireplace that crackles in cooler months. This room would usually be lively with patrons perched at high-tops and on blue leather bar stools, though this set-up was streamlined during COVID restrictions. The restaurant’s four distinct dining areas are decorated with handcrafted walnut tables and vibrant mid-century chairs. Light enters through large Palladian windows and twinkles T E X T PAUL HAGEN

from Sputnik chandeliers. “We wanted the at- mosphere to be warm but with a modern and contemporary vibe,” explains Nancy. The cuisine has classical roots with a mod- ern sensibility. “During James’ time in France, he was struck by the natural relationship between the farm and the restaurant,” Nancy points out. James has prided himself on his relationships with the people who grow his ingredients ever since, a philosophy reflected on the plate. “Our food always mirrors the season,” Nancy says. “We source the freshest fish, best meat, and fresh vegetables.” These end up in dishes including sea bass with risot- to; long-roasted duck with honey glaze; and tender octopus with black olives and new po- tatoes. Beverages change seasonally, as well: cocktails showcase strawberries in springtime, go mojito for summer, and incorporate cider as autumn descends. Sweeter still is dessert. “Our warm chocolate tart with house made vanilla ice cream,” Nancy adds, “is an extraor- dinary expression of a molten chocolate cake.” Restaurant Serenade even thrived through COVID-19. “After the initial shock, we just got to work,” Nancy offers. “We didn’t close at all; we worked hard to meet the new challenges.” That included maximizing pick-up and take- out, welcoming customers to outdoor space under a tent, and offering indoor seating when restrictions eased. “We follow the rules and have much hope for the future,” she says. ■

their oversized corner tub with a deck to a freestanding bathtub, while incorporating a larger shower with multiple showering outlets. Is there a design upgrade you’d love to make in your own home? My current master bathroom only has a small shower; someday I would like to install a larger shower and inte- grate a steam unit with smart digital controls. Can you share a trend or something going on in the world of design that fascinates you? I think it is interesting how everything comes full circle; the old and new designs influence each other. Pol- ished brass finishes were replaced by brushed nickel. Now that gold is in fashion, they are including different shades and brush finishes— small twists to an old style. What snaps you out of a bad mood? Can never go wrong with watching Netflix while eating a bowl of mint chip ice cream.

Can you describe a favorite design project you’ve worked on? There have been many projects throughout the years that stand out: full home renovation, custom homes, and even a yacht. Is there a design-focused TV show or movie that you love? I spend a good amount of time watching the classic This Old House or other shows on HGTV like Fixer Upper with Chip and Joanna Gaines. They are great sources for ideas and learning what else is out there that may help me in the future. If you were a color, what color would you be, and why? Gray. It’s a neutral, subtle color that offers a great balance. It can be part of the core concept of any design or play a strong supporting role amplifying others. What type of design project do you find yourself working on most? Many clients are looking to update their master bathrooms. They want to create more space by replacing

How would you describe your per- sonal design style? I like to live between modern and tra- ditional, and pick out the best pieces from each. Who inspires you? My dad taught me so much growing up. He was a master plumber and showed me the fundamentals—how everything is integrated and related.

MEET THE DESIGNERS

What type of design project do you find yourself working on most? The most common design project is renovation of either master baths or family bath space. What historical figure would you most like to meet? Amelia Earhart Is there a design upgrade you’d love to make in your own home? I would love to put a steam shower in my home; it has so many health benefits. Can you share something going on in the world of design that fascinates you? I am excited to see clients using painted cabinetry, whether it be a navy vanity or a green kitchen island. It’s a welcome change to the standard whites and gray out there.

Describe a favorite design project you’ve worked on. My favorite project I worked on was a new construction, contemporary style home. The homeowner was not afraid to use textured surfaces for countertops or flooring. We incorporated some natural wood elements as well as industrial style faucets & fittings. Is there a design-focused TV show or movie that you love? Currently I am hooked on HGTV’S Rock The Block. Every challenge, the teams have to design a certain space, and it’s really interesting to see the unique perspective from each design team on the same space. If you were a color, what color would you be—and why? I would be purple. It’s the color of spirituality that embodies the fiery- ness of red and the calm of blue. Purple encourages the imagination and creativity—and it’s associated with luxury.

How would you describe your personal design style? I have an eclectic sense of design; I like to mix styles to create a unique, individual look—. usually by layering textures and making sure there is a good use of color. Who inspires you? STONE COLD THE MATERIALITY OF MARBLE, CLAY OR STONE

A countertop may do more to define the décor of a kitchen or bathroom than any other single element in a remodeling project. As the center of attention, surfaces, with all their variation in textures and finishes, create ambiance and establish an atmosphere of casual comfort or luxuri- ous sophistication. Just like with any other design decision, form and function go hand in hand, but nowhere is that more critical than in the kitchen and bath—high traffic rooms where water and heat are factors, and durability is key. Natural surfaces such as wood or granite might look terrific when installed, but will they stand the test of time? Fortunately, when it comes to materials, modern technology has made T E X T CHARLOTTE VALE

it possible to achieve an old-world, lived-in look without the maintenance that sometimes comes with materials such as marble or clay. Sinks and baths especially lend themselves to these new manufacturing technologies. A large farmhouse sink may seem perfect until you realize that enameled cast iron can chip or scratch, showing wear and tear. Stone sinks are a wonderful idea, but can retain stains and odors. Fireclay, a composite material, is formed when clay and glaze are fired at very high temperatures, creating a durable surface that can be made in custom colors and mimics enameled cast iron. With so many practical and beautiful options, it is now possible to achieve the look you love that lasts.

I n its storied history, the Ivy League town of Princeton, New Jersey has long been known for the best in education, the arts, and culture. It has also—since 1974—been known as a show- house town. But in recent years, that aspect of Princeton culture had ceased, until last year when ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME launched ASPIRE HOUSE Princeton in a contemporary home only a few minutes from the Gothic towers of Princeton University and its surrounding landmark mansions. A portion of the proceeds from the showhouse were set aside to benefit the education and careers of up-and-coming designers from underrepresented communities. Despite the challenges of producing a project of this nature—and then opening it to the public—during a global pandemic, the home was widely acclaimed for its diversity of design and innovation. So- phia Koutsiaftis, Associate Publisher of ASPIRE DESIGN AND HOME explains, “It was a great pleasure collaborating with the enormously talented team of designers, showhouse sponsors, product sponsors, craftspeople, vendors and volunteers that all contributed to bringing this incredible home to life.” ■ T E X T DEBORAH L. LIGHT BRIGHT T E X T PAUL HAGEN

The Sonneman Purolinear 360’s tubes rotate to make your lighting direct or indirect— depending on your needs.

LIGHTING STYLES FROM OLD-WORLD TO SPACE-AGE

Hudson Valley Lighting’s Orbit chandelier offers a soft glow from opal glass diffusers mixed with interlocking shapes in Aged Brass.

This MITZI Landis lamp stands about 18 inches— lending tabletop shine with a polished nickel base and interest with a perforated black shade.

J ust as there are near-infinite ways to shape a space, there are almost as many ways to light it. But whether you choose lighting that makes a state- ment all on its own, that strategically highlights certain aspects of a room, or that provides illumination while demurely vanishing into background can significantly alter how a space is perceived. Lovers of lighting that announces itself boldly will find themselves drawn to statement pieces, like the Orbit chandelier from Hudson Valley Light- ing. Or they may gravitate towards Kohler’s Aren- dela, which boasts distinctively textured surfaces inspired by briolette-cut gems. Fans of fixtures that wink back might prefer perforations, including the delicate Nyack line from Hudson Valley Lighting. Delight may also be

derived from dots that dance from Mitzi’s Landis or the scientific silhouette of the Troy Atticus. Good old-fashioned satisfaction may also be gleaned from lighting that hearkens back to an earlier time. Belfield by Moen, Duncan by Golden and Hauksbee by Kohler: each call to mind light fixtures one might find on the set of a meticulously researched period piece, yet the results are timeless. Depending on how it’s deployed, the Sonneman Purolinear 360 could be an eye-catching state- ment piece on its own. Each tube rotates so it can be used to create indirect light or strategically aimed to draw the eye. So, is the right light for your space a supremely sculptural chandelier or something more subtle and unobtrusive? Take a look at these options and see what sets off sparks.

Moen features Williamsburg-era details throughout its Belfield line, which means pieces like this One Globe Bath Light offer a traditional touch.
