To the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai community

It is wonderful to see the redevelopment of Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital taking shape and beginning to look like a real building that will soon house our hard working clinicians and staff to deliver world-class care to the community. On behalf of the hospital, its staff and the entire Northern Sydney Local Health District, I would like to thank the local community for its ongoing support of the hospital, which has been located at this site since 1933. We are proud to be building a modern hospital designed to provide the best possible health care to our local community and that meets the needs of future generations. I recently took a tour of the new building with the redevelopment project team and was impressed by how large our new Medical Imaging department will be (picture with the project team on front cover). The $200 million redevelopment will deliver a new multi-storey clinical services building, which you can see being constructed, that will accommodate a medical assessment unit, combined intensive care and high dependency unit, combined cardio/respiratory ward and cardiac care unit, cardiac investigations unit, outpatient services, inpatient units, new retail outlets and education space. The community will also have a refurbished and expanded Emergency Department. This year, an additional $65 million was provided by the NSW Government towards the redevelopment to also include two rehabilitation inpatient units, refurbish and increase capacity of the Psychiatric Emergency Care Centre, expansion of outpatient services including chemotherapy, renal dialysis and oral health services, consolidation of community health services, rehabilitation inpatient units and a helipad.

Monthly construction snapshot – August 2019 BED SHOPPING FOR OUR NEW BUILDING As our new Clinical Services Building takes shape, we’ll need to top up our supply of inpatient beds. We hosted a ‘try before you buy’ opportunity on September 19 in the STAR foyer for staff, patients and carers to provide feedback on which beds we should procure. Different beds were on display for visitors who tested them out and provided feedback. The feedback received will be used to make a decision on which type of bed to buy to add to our existing fleet.

X-RAY GOES MOBILE The hospital now has a new mobile x-ray unit.

Chief radiographer Anna Abeska said:

I would like to thank you for your patience during the construction phase and I look forward to bringing you a newly developed hospital that our community truly deserves. “Mobile radiography is used when patients are too ill to come to the department, like ICU and in emergency cases.”

Thank you for your patience The redevelopment project team thanks you for your patience

Concrete pour: One of the last pours of the new Clinical Service Building

Construction update Over the past three months, the construction of the new Clinical Services Building has taken shape. Externally, the final concrete pours have started and the top levels of the building have been constructed. Brickwork to levels 1 and 2 of the southern component of the building is underway and windows are being installed. Meanwhile, internal walls are being erected in the Paediatrics department and painting has started.

Hospital street, the main linkway connecting STAR, the new building and the northern part of the campus (Lumby building) has also progressed and will be completed prior to the opening of the new Medical Imaging department, which is on track to open later this year. A major concrete pour (pictured above) took place on level 5 recently, with one more major pour remaining. Thank you for your patience while construction continues.
